Update on the problem. When I try to bring any of the 3 options on View/Decorations: Copyright Label, North Arrow, Scale Bar, from the QGIS Plugin Manager, QGIS crashes. These decorations are not python plugins, so why do they appear in the plugin manager? The problem appears in local installation of 1.8 and master, but not in a system install (from ubuntugis-unstable). I noticed this when testing the packaging on OS X. So I added a note to the OS X readme to delete the previous QGIS.app if there are problems. The OS X installer should be removing this stuff automatically, but it's not, mayeb I need to hardwire cleanup of old files... and someone should do something similar for Linux.
