Belated Happy New Year to you all.

Well, my Aurora finally arrived and I'm now in the process of putting
 it all back together.
snip
There is a small thin black wire coming off the superHermes that has
what looks like a small screwdriver at the end
but is in fact a Hook of sorts. I assume i need to attach this hook
 onto something (the case? earth?).
I used to have one of these ( still do ) I think best NOT to connect the
hook to earth or case. think we need Tony to interrupt here, pretty sure it
is to do with SH and maybe the clock battery ( could be wrong it was a time
ago)
Did like Aurora though nice speedy display I thought.

All the best- Bill ( building another BSA A10 these days and keeping my GP
busy )

A happy new year to everyone on this list.

And a happy new year to my MinisQL. You'll remember a few weeks ago it
was giving me big problems with fast flashing cursor and shorter than
 usual PAUSEs and Qubide problems.

Today, I finally plucked up the courage to take it all apart, check
and clean all contacts I could get at and try to reassemble it if I
could! As usual when I take a computer apart, there were screws left
over and so on which caused some head scratching as I tried to
 remember where everything went.

Although I still don't know what caused the problems, it's now back to
normal. It does seem to have been bad contacts somewhere, although
goodness knows where because it wasn't done one step at a time.

It seems that cleaning out 2006 did the trick :-)

So, I hope yuo all have your QaLendar 2007 on your walls and looking
 forward to QooL 2007!

QPC print arrived today so I 'll see how it performs
managed to get output to the printer thanks to Per just in time to find the
ink runs out.
So as I was in Berwick today I thought I'd get a cartridge for the Epson
(stylus 740) only to find it's not supported any more by Curries or Argos
although I forgot about our branch of Red Shark, not sure about it as I
think they went belly up.
Anyway I came away with an HP printer from Argos for £19.99 ( spare black
cartridge at £14.99 ) has the world gone mad - yes I think so.
got it set up and printing and guess what - yep archive trips up again,
seems it is the USB port that it doesn't like as I had the Epson going
connected to both USB and Par ( LPT1).

So tonight I'll try QPC print - oh what fun

still struggling with this one guys.
to recap I'm using archive under QPC2, I've changed the port the printers
on from a USB ( virtual printer ) to LPT1 and pointed par to same in QPC.

My Archive prg is as below

proc label

lprint
lprint
lprint
lprint ' '+name$
lprint ' '+adda$
lprint ' '+addb$
lprint ' '+addc$
lprint
lprint
lprint ( I need chr$ for ff in here right )
spoolon '_par' : spooloff

looking at Windows printer queue it looks like nothing is getting sent to
the printer at all, I've been up in the loft for my manuals - can't find the
Ql one ( I must have at least three somewhere ) and what is the chr$ for FF
I've forgotten ( 36 )

FF = 12, but in Archive you need to precede non-printables with a chr(0).
 Thus form feed becomes

lprint chr(0)+chr(12)

Hmm, on checking wot I rote just now, it appears that nowadays just

lprint chr(12)

 will do the trick

 Thus:

proc label
spoolon '_par1'
lprint
lprint
lprint
lprint ' '+name$
lprint ' '+adda$
lprint ' '+addb$
lprint ' '+addc$
lprint
lprint
lprint chr(12)
spooloff
endproc

Ive also got the following post amble code in my printer driver (ESC/2):

 12,27,@

Which means that I dont explicitly have to send an FF, as Archive sends
 this
 as part of the spooloff.

Thank you Per - it works - at last, but just so I don't get carried away the

reprogrammed Archive, altered the printer_dat (the most troublesome

via SBasic. All no problem. QPCprint is used and first in the queue. So,
nevertheless, what kind of Windows printer is attached to QPCprint,
QPCprint is the first and leading part. If it does not give an output,

Maybe you should try fiddling with the Extended properties of the
printer, e.g. disable the spooler and send contents directly to the
printer.

I had to do this to connect an EPSON POS printer, program it via QPC
and get immediate reaction on every byte sent to the printer.

Jochen

I've tried that Jochen, in fact I think? I've covered about every
combination in there, I'm using an Epson colour 740, always worked before
with just a jiggle of the Par Ser _use commands.
Four things have changed since it worked

1. Upgraded PC
2. Upgraded ( relative term ) to Windows XP
3. Upgraded QPC2
4. previously used Xchange which I have lost somewhere, this time I used
Psion Archive and was wondering about Archives memory hogging traits but if
Ralf is having the same problem with Xchange this seems to negate that one.

no, confusion. Ralf asked about programming, not the Windows settings.

I referred to the Windows settings. Try right-clicking the printer,

Nothing to do with programming. I just MENTIONED that *I* had to

I know what you mean, but as QPCprint hast to come first, I am not sure,
 if
the printer settings in windows are the problem. As far as I have
 understand
it, QPCprint starts reacting, when the PAR port is closed, so it really
seems that XChange leaves the port open.

Seems to be like in Text87: As long as you are in the Print menu,
 nothing
happens, even if the program prints. When you ESC from the menu, then
QPCprint reacts, which means to me, that PAR is then closed.

2005-12-25 Thread Bill Waugh
Just off to put the Turkey in Per, so I'll take this opportunity to wish
you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.
And many thanks to our traders and software developers for their continued
efforts, although I have not been very active on my QL this year I can't
give it up and still very much enjoy the occasional tinker.
BTW I never cured the printing from QPC and wonder if when I upgraded the PC
and transferred the QPC files across to the new PC I somehow violated the
QPC copy protection, I tried to reinstall QPC and it came up install
aborted, need to get the disc upgraded maybe.

What are you sad, sad people sitting 'round watching this list for?!

Time to take a break and get some Christmas cheer!

Although when it comes to QL I find I always want more and more,

I know it'll now have to wait until next year.

Hardly possible, as there is no copy protection.

I tried to reinstall QPC and it came up install aborted, need to
 get the disc upgraded maybe.

Just copy the QPC2.EXE, SMSQE.BIN and REGISTER.KEY files to hard disc,
 installation is not really needed.

Happy holidays from me, too, Marcel

Oops another theory bites the dust.
Will do as you say Marcel and see what happens, I have another printer in a
shed I'll try it, if that fails well it looks like I need QPC print.

No, perfectly logical. As I wrote, printing only starts once the
channel is closed. In order to open it again, it has to be closed
first, that's why it prints on the second open. I.e.

 open#3,par
 print #3, ' Hi '
 close #3

 will work as well.

Are you sure FF doesnt work?

 open#3; 'par': bput#3; 12

should throw a page. On some printers you need to pass some data before an
 FF will work, such as:

 open#3; 'par': bput#3; 10, 12

Nope just does nothing until you close the channel

Experiment! If that works, the equivalent command from Archive would be
 something like:

 lprint chr(0)+chr(12)

(You need the leading chr(0) to bypass Archive's penchant for filtering
 out
 non-print characters)

Regarding another problem, mentioned by Dilwyn, about the printer not
starting to print a long document before the channel is closed, it just
 may
be down to a setting in the PC's printer configuration dialog. Check the
 following (PC side):

Start/Settings/Printers Right click the printer you want to configure and
select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Check the Start Printing
Immediately radio button, an' Bob's yer aunt's live-in lover.

Thats the setting already Per - looks like Bobs out of luck tonight then
tried 'Print direct to Printer' but that seemed to freeze QPC although that
might of course be Windows, sometmes programes do freeze on Windows believe
it or not.
Will try again after some food
Many thanks for your efforts

while all the above will not work the following does

open #3;par
print #3;' yet another test'
for n = 1 to 66: print #3:n: end for n

so the problem has been correctly identified ( many thanks all ) however I'm
damned if I can find what windows settings that could correct it.
I've tried setting print processor to raw, raw (FF) appended, raw(FF Auto)
default is raw.
Spooled and direct to printer
results are the same with printer on USB or LPT
only thing that's changed since I last did this is I upgraded (LOL) from

Can you print from QPC via the USB port,?, if so what settings in the set

AFAIK you should be able to print via any printer attached to your PC
provided it understands a language your QL-side printer driver speaks.

In the QPC configuation screen (or using Menuconfig) map par1 to Printer.
 If
your PC happens to be set up to print via the USB port then thats the path
your print data will take to reach the printer without any further input
 on
your part. Ie, it is not necessary to have both a par and a usb cable
 attached.

Merry Christmas all - I have been rather quiet of late, but could not miss
 this one !!

Bill - the problem below that the Epson inkjets only start printing when
you reach the bottom of the page - in this instance, although you only
printed one line (out of 66), as soon as you do OPEN #3,par again, it
closes the parallel port, which tells the printer that it has reached the
 end of the print job.

The answer is to send a Form Feed character at the bottom of each page if
you are not sending more than 66 lines to the printer...

 PRINT #3,CHR$(12)

 Rich
 Hi Rich
I see where your coming from, strange I have never had to do this before
with the same printer.
Just tried it - no Luck are you sure it's CHR$(12), I haven't got any QL
stuff at hand, this is the problem I upgraded the Pc in the summer and also
built a bookcase around the desk moving everything up into the loft until I
got it all together,
I usually use Exchange ( Archive ) for printing out Christmas address and it
works fine, so there is another variable but if it wont print in Basic then
there not much chance in Archive.

2005-03-28 Thread Bill Waugh
Hi
A couple of queries that some of you might can help out with
1. (I'm sure this has come up before) when running QPC when the cursor moves
over a basic window a letter A attaches itself to the cursor? system is
Sempron running windows XP.

2. I have tried three times to install QDT, it keeps logging no hotkey
available when there is indeed plenty left unused, and in #0 window no
signal extension.
Exec ing QDT direct does not bring up any Icon and nothing appears in Jobs

Can QDT exist alongside QPAC2, surely it must if it should have a hot_key.
I have minimised my boot file to eliminate any problems but still no luck

The A letter is my doing :-) It is the old letter K icon (waiting for

I think it needs HOT_GO.

For signal extension you need to lrespr sigext30_rext (Available from

Did you let QDT make a boot file... you may have instructed it to save the
required bootfile with another file name. try to use that one instead :-)

no it modifies the existing boot file

Bill,
Please forward me the following items by separate email and I will try to
figure out what is wrong with your install and running of QDT. Also,
please feel free to contact me through the following email on any QDT
related questions. Part of your QDT documentation gives you information
on getting 'quick' support.
Hi James
It's installed, I used the manual install, I think it may have been that I
have extentions in a seperate directory (Resex_) and also I think HOT_GO may
have been skipped/missed/not implimented I recall some instructions in the
past to PAUSE 100 before the HOTKEY commands.
Still have the the no Hotkey available to sort out, I'll give it one via
the boot file and see if it works.

Why do I need the signal extentions I do recall having these in the past
but can't remeber what they are for

First fleeting impression - wow looks promising -- very, I've been a QL
poser for some time now, you know fiddling a little now and then but not
doing anything useful, finally got around to upgade QPC and a few other
programes and obviously I'm a bit rusty but looks like I'm hooked again.

If any problems occur I'll comply with your instructions
All the best - Bill
1. send me a copy of:
  - if QDT installed properly:
from win1_QDT_, there should be an install_log or similar type file
else if QDT did not install properly
from win1_QDTINST_, the same install log or similar file
2. your boot file
  - original one that was backed up
  - boot file after QDT installed
3. your QDT_log file after you ran QDT (in win1_QDT_)
4. the DESKTOP_QDT file in win1_QDT_
Is your boot file a single file or does it call other basic boot files
conditionally during boot?

I have many messages that are included in these and should be able to
determine the issue if you can pass these files to me to review.

Close to a paradox there. If you agreed you were 110% honest you would

not if you could calculate variations,percentages.. like Freddie (;-)

OK, I know I'm asking for it with Lookout Excess, but anyone know why
the attachment indicator paperclip shows on emails with no attachment.
I go into properties and it says no attachment.

I generally delete such emails without reading them, so may well have
deleted some QLers emails needlessly.

I have also been getting these occasionally. They are always spam and I
assume it is one of the spammers new tricks.

Thus I don't think you have deleted QL related emails accidentally.
Occasionally I do do that or even structurally block a genuine QL
emailer, but I always do a double check by looking in my delete box.

It is a good practice when emailing another QL-er privately to always
include a keyword such as QL or Quanta in the subject title.

Best Wishes,
Geoff
I also get these, as they usually have an empty subject line I tried to
block them via OE's filters by rejecting an empty string in the subject
line, wouldn't work though, same thing in Thunderbird you can mark them
as junk but it wont work with the next one to arrive, it a dodgy
strategy anyway as sometimes genuine sender forget to fill the subject line.

Oh please no, it would only be a matter of time (pun) before someone

A question while were OT. my son has a new phone that can send video

Yep I've got them now, but it took me a while, got the extensions
downloaded ok and added to Thunderbird easy enough, took me some time to
realise you have to drop and drag them onto the toolbar from a selection

Has anybody ever seen the Real Time Clock Failure message on SuperGoldCard
 equipped QLs/Auroras?

Is it just the battery or maybe something else?

BTW: If it's just a dead battery... will leaving the system on will
recharge it? If not anybody knows where I can get a replacement?

Yes - it was the battery, this was a long time ago
IIRC I got the battery from Miracle, seem to recall it lived under one of
the chips or some other removable component.
not much help I guess

Thanks for these Tony, as a long time Qluser (1984) who has not attended too
many workshops ( maybe six in total ) it's nice to see some familiar faces,
I don't get to use the QL enough these days but try to keep up with
developments, hoping to get back to Sbasic one of these days.
Why is it we get busier as we get older - or is it me
