Dear François, thank you very much. Well, I have not really left the QL, nor have I been very active after I stopped QL Today. I still use SMSQ/E every day ... I am glad to have met so many nice QLers during many years of QLing, including you, of course, François. Let's be glad that we had a great time - maybe one of the best, most innovative and most interesting ever? Best regards Jochen Hi Jochen, Sad news indeed. Condolences for your wife's father. [Ql-Users] Sad news, sad news and more sad news
Hello to Everybody on the list, I don't know why, but it seems I dropped out of the list end of January. Which means, I missed some of the sad news (like Sjef's death) :-( My wife and I suffered from one of worst flu's we remember for about 2 months in total, so I did not notice that there were no news ... I had the chance to speak to Stuart Honeyball on the phone a few days before he died, thanks to his wife Karin, which has been a very sad call. What a great person he was! I hope I will find the time to go through my memories and write something ... EU-GDRP compliance ... made me stop all my QL activies and shutting down all the websites. I will display a "thank you for the great times we had" until 24th of May, then delete everything completely. The rules and information requiries forced by the EU are just too silly and the fines are too high. Even websites which show information only require detailed data protection rules. I have already spoken to Marcel ... I will forward him sources and manuals when I find the time. We have had bad news here either, the most recent being that last week my wife's father died suddenly and her mother cannot stay at home alone, actually cannot be left alone. I do not want to go into detail, but we're looking forward to many many problems. Anyway, I just wanted to report that my software will not be lost ... but I definitely need time to sort things. Just a quick info: I got more inquiries over the weekend for more re-prints. I am very glad to see there is so much interest in the QL, in QL Today and QPC etc. ... I guess we all can take this as a kind of compliment. I don't want to turn anybody down, but this time it will be the final re-print ... definitely. So please spread the word wherever you can: if there's interest in QL Today Volume 17 (all 4 issues) together with the Bonus DVD including FREE FULL QPC2 V4, then it is time to order NOW! As all the previous re-prints are gone, I will do a (really) final print-run. On a personal note, as the first editor of the magazine, it was so nice that the last words on the back cover of the very last issue were in Welsh, not sure of that was a subtle and personal note or not, but in case it was (and knowing Geoff it might well have been) thanks for that and for the number of times my name appears in this last issue. It was me actually and it was deliberate, of course :) I very much hope that Jochen, Bruce and Geoff will remain involved with the QL for some time to come. I can only speak for myself, but yes, I will... it was a hard decision giving up QL Today, but I still use QPC every day. Re: [Ql-Users] Arrival of Final QL Today + DVD
Hi Bob, thanks for the quick report and the compliments. Yes, the Dutch issues went to the post earliest in Holland. The German issues and the US issues went to the post yesterday. All other issues will be shipped early next week from Austria (airmail to all destiantions outside of Austria). I have to split it this way to get the best postage for every destination - 48pages plus DVD went way over the budget, especially as Deutsche Post removed the InfoBrief service surprisingly early this year and the subscription price (summer 2012) did not cover it at all - but I thought that it would be great to end everything with a great issue! I have printed a few extra issues so whoever wants it can still order it here: http://smsq.j-m-s.com/ Five or six sets are left over, as far as I am aware. This time, all but the German issues were sent from Austria ... and the September issue will be sent from Austria too. All issues are already in the post. 54 pages this time. It was a hard decision - after 17 years of QL Today ... but a detailed explanation will be in the issue, as Geoff already wrote. A final issue will follow - can I expect feedback, please? :-) And no, I don't think this is the end. At least I don't hope so. I'm sure I will miss it at least as much as some of you do. Hi Norman, All issues are already in the post. 54 pages this time. A bumper issue then! Nice. Can't wait. ;-) It was a hard decision - after 17 years of QL Today ... but a detailed explanation will be in the issue, as Geoff already wrote. 17 years is a great time. I think I've been there most if it. I'd like to say thanks to everyone involved, past and present, for keeping us informed all these years. I think QL Today has to be the longest lasting QL Magazine of them all? (That's as opposed to Quanta, of course!) A final issue will follow - can I expect feedback, please? :-) Yes. FINE! And no, I don't think this is the end. At least I don't hope so. I'm sure I will miss it at least as much as some of you do. Well, if the problem is postage, a pdf is the way to go I expect. With a download, there's no postage. How many of us readers cannot download a PDF every now and again I wonder? No, it is a combination of many things. Postage is only one of them. Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today
Yes - small packet. However the price difference in Europe is not high. Small packet is anything up to 2kg. No steps. Costs 8,20 EUR ... not an optional at all. I reckon though the main reason must be writers, and production time/cost. And the always decreasing number of readers - time was unpaid, anyway. I suspect most readers would be prepared to pay extra postage. No, adding 8 or 10 EUR will be an increase we never had before ... and we lost many readers when there were smaller increases. Also, direct debit will have to be re-done for German readers thanks to new EU rules - they will have to send a signed mandate back - which will lead to losses in readership again. Anyway, let's see if something new comes out of all this - maybe it's a chance. Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Ian Burkinshaw schrieb: Sad though this is, I have to say it seems me inevitable this was going to happen sooner or later. The constant increase in postal rates is self defeating, the more they go up, the less poeple send. Look at Christmas cards, card pennies, post 40p, just out of step. I bet we have all cut back on Christmas cards, for this reason. Many professional producted magazines are going down the same road to electronic, to keep costs under control. So we are not alone with this issue. Yes, very true. I have also to say writing for QLToday spured me on to write my hardware articals. It was a focal point as a publication and deadlines. Without deadlines we all go I will do that next week, then is two weeks and so it goes on and it never gets done. Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today Website
Dear Norman, not going into details here as I cannot change the qltoday website ... Bruce took care of it but he was very busy for quite some months. The MAJOR difference here compared to Quanta is that Bruce does it for free, work and site hosting. Current info can be found on my website http://smsq.j-m-s.com/ ... and I am sure that the qltoday site will be updated as soon as possible. I have informed Bruce. No protective clothing needed ;-) CheersJochen Norman Dunbar schrieb: Morning all, I know this is a PITA - it is to me when someone tells me my web site is out of date - but the QL Today web site (www.qltoday.com) appears to be quite out of date. The back issues page has nothing more recent than Volume 13 - which could mean that there are no more recent copies of course! The cover discs page has nothing after Volume 12. I know that there was a DVD with Volume 16 Issue 1. The Listings page is missing (?) a few of the listings. I suspect that not all listings in the magazine get put up here? The index page stops at Volume 15. There is one show on the show page, Vienna, June 2012. I'm sure that there are more web sites that could be added to the links page. Also, on this page Thierry Godefroy's QL Support Page is no longer present at t he URL supplied. I know I'm complaining, but I'm trying to be constructive. [Ql-Users] Plans for QL2013
Plans for QL 2013 It seems that the article in the last issue of QL Today has triggered something for next year. The venue this time will be Hamburg ... a nice city and worth visiting, if you have not been there yet. And if you have, worth another visit too... as the address will be Reeperbahn 1 (famous!) - the entry to St. Pauli. Rainer Wolkwitz offered a conference room for the meeting for up to 200 people in den Tanzenden Türmen/STRABAG ... and he says it will have a beautiful view over Hamburg and its port (only 10 minutes walking distance from there). The towers are quite interesting to look at, especially if you stay in front of them. Here, for example, are some pictures: http://www.strabag-real-estate.com/databases/internet/_public/content.nsf/web/DE-STRABAGREAL.COM-PROJEKTE-B%C3%9CRO-Tanzende%20T%C3%BCrme,%20Hamburg#?men1=2men2=undefinedsid=232h=2 We thought that the date for the meeting should avoid the holiday season and major events in Hamburg, to increase chances for reasonable hotel rates. We found that the following dates are probably the best ones, chances for good weather, chances for less traffic, chances for affordable hotels: a) Weekend 18th/19th of May b) Weekend 25th/26th of May c) Weekend 1st/2nd of June d) Weekend 31st of August/1st of September So, we should start working out which date suites most of you best, and if you prefer the Saturday or the Sunday to be the meeting date. Assuming, that a visit to Hamburg will not just be for a QL meeting, other activities like siteseeing or shopping can easily be placed around the meeting. A note for visitors from outside Germany: shops are closed on Sunday, but there are loads of other things to do, e.g. like visiting the harbour and various ships, or cruise through the harbour, musicals, Zoo Hagenbeck, all sorts of museums or the famous Miniatur Wunderland (the world's largest miniature train exhibition). Please let us know if there is any interest, and what would be your preferred date and day ... please send an email to s...@j-m-s.com, subject QL2013 and the letters for your TWO preferred dates (a,b,c,d) and whether you prefer Saturday or Sunday, or no preference. Also, help would be most welcome - Rainer said he does not have too much time to care for other things like hotels. He can provide technical equipment which could be required for talks or demonstrations (hint, hint!), like a large screen or projector and internet, of course. Please reply a.s.a.p. so that we can start working on the details. For dates in May, only half a year is left, which is 2 issues of QL Today in between for a poll of the preferred date and advertising for the event. We may not be able to fill the room with 200 people, but after having had several meetings in the South, this is very North and a chance to meet people we have not seen for many years! And - Hamburg is worth visiting and seeing anyway! Best regardsJochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Plus there's a copy (mirror) of the biggest QL related website. All in all gigabytes of information for you to discover. Even though the Sinclair QL is the main topic, both the QL Today magazine and the Bonus Material cover other Sinclair (ZX) and Retro Computing aspects as well. Articles by Rick Dickinson (Sinclair Research Ltd. Industrial Designer January 1980 - April 1987), Tony Tebby (Sinclair Research Ltd. System Software Designer 1982-1984, author of Qdos), Simon N Goodwin (remember his many articles in the 80s computer magazines and software like the ZIP-compiler for the ZX Spectrum) are just a few hot-spots to name here. The DVD is only available together with a one year subscription of the current volume (4 issues) of the QL Today magazine. The QL Today DVD 2011 and the first issue of volume 16 are ready to ship now (http://smsq.j-m-s.com/). For more information and subscription information please visit the magazine's website (http://www.qltoday.com/). There's a sample issue available as PDF for you to download and try. Re: [Ql-Users] Huge Sinclair repository on DVD out now!
Hi Norman, As someone who has to burn a pile of DVDs for a living (at work that is!) I know exactly what a PITA it is to do, so a huge thank you to Jochen - who I assume did the burning - it is an extremely thankless task. Yes, all done with the same burner to ensure everybody gets the same DVD. Took some days (only 4x speed). Equally huge thanks are due to everyone who scanned, collated and edited the DVD contents - thanks everyone. From me too, again. I for one, appreciate the hard work and effort involved. We sometimes forget (I think) that QL Today is not created by a huge conglomerate with the latest in printing and DVD duplication equipment and that most, if not all, is done by hand. Very very true - thanks for the kind words, Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Hi Malcolm, Arrived in London, too, on Saturday 17th September 2011. Very fast this time. Tried the DVD on my desktop PC, and was not able to auto-start. From directory, then saw files on the disc, yet no content. Turned off PC, and re-started. Then disc not accessible format message. Tried on my portable PC, and all is well. Re: [Ql-Users] Huge Sinclair repository on DVD out now!
Both machines are running Win XP Pro. Any idea what could be the reason? Could it be that the disk is a DVD- or a DVD+ and the one drive cannot read that format? Always a pain with DVD s! Mine has also arrived and works - many thanks for this! :-) Fine. Yes, especially with RWs ... I did some tests some years ago and most DVD-RWs were not readable on other systems, so I gave up on them. DVD-RAM were and are very reliable, and much more flexible. You may be right, but for non-rewritables, I thought that this + and - issue should be history ... as all drives were able to read both for many years now. It must be a VERY old system if it handles only one type of DVD. Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
Re: [Ql-Users] Huge Sinclair repository on DVD out now!
Hi Adrian, No problems here. My congratulations to all involved. A great piece of work! Thanks. As I know from experience, you can never be certain that every disk is going to be readable by every drive. Even if you verify each disk after burning, some read problems are almost inevitable. And the very act of printing on the disks might introduce a miniscule rotational imbalance that makes the disk borderline on certain makes of drive. I guess the post can do more damage to a disk than printing (here is no pressure involved). Or do you refer to weight of the ink ;-) +R/-R shouldn't be an issue these days, but still, some drives are better at reading one format than another. My personal preference is +R. I don't even know if it was a +R or -R ... as written in the magazine and the one before, I've never created such a DVD. Anyway, nice work. ... :-) Cheers Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Maybe Google sometimes lists the webring link rather than your site. Tony I have had this issue with the rwapsoftware.co.uk - I could not find out what was doing it either - it looks as though someone has hacked the webring code to redirect browsers to their website when it appears as either the next one in the ring (or other ring link) In the end I removed the code. Morning Norman, Indeed - all has been said - and support for the Bridge module is ZERO simply no supporters. After that, the thread went completely quiet. But I never said never ... Well, I couldn't offer support for the bridge as (a) the description of it was all in German which I cannot read (I'm afraid and ashamed to say) or understand. Well, I don't think Tobias was referring to this kind of support. As we know (and your German was good enough to figure all this out :-) there is no test version. Indeed again. And it is pretty sad to see that Urs' effort did not get feedback either... and it dates back about 2 weeks already. I gave feedback! Honest, I did! At least, I'm sure I did! (Note to self, check the archives!) Oh, I checked this before I wrote it (as I did not remember a reply) and I cannot find anything in this thread after Urs' message, 14th of Oct. But I guess Urs, you and Wolfgang did not really count as we were on the active side, not the demanding side ;-) In fact, I gave the feedback that Urs had produces a nice bitmapped PDF which I was able to extract text from and create a smaller (ie a few pages rather than the whole of issue 1) PDF where the text was text and not an image. Which I thought was the problem - Calamus creates bitmapped PDFs which are huge and we really need text based ones which are much smaller. Yes, they are way too huge - they should be text-based AND smaller. And the only possible solution seems to be the Bridge Module (back in the circle). Just this quick reply, then I'm out for this week - extremely busy (taxes 2009 have to be finished by Sunday). Good luck. I've not long finished mine for end of year. Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today Volume 15 Issue 1
Hi Tobias, Per, all, Even if I personally prefer any printed matter to .PDFs, (There's simply places you won't take your computer for reading...), another word on that: Me too - and that was the essence from our readers when we did the survey some years ago. An electronic version should not replace the paper version completely, otherwise we would have too many unhappy readers. It could only be an additional feature. if I recall it right (It's been years since I have last used Calamus) the in-built PS driver did _not_ do the RIPping, but instead relied on Calamus to send already pixelized data - I'm afraid we'd (again) end up with huge, unsearchable bitmaps, something wich is barely an improvement upon simple scanning. This is what I keep saying. Opposed to that (also from limited memory) Bridge Pro, went in /before/ the actual image processing and should be able to export much smaller, and also searchable files. A bit of searching reveals _this_ (German, unfortunately): http://www.calamus.net/modules/bri.php (It's not free, but Jochen mentioned he'd be willing to support the maintenance of that software... ;-) Ideally, he'd find some other supporters in the QL Toady audience, I guess) Thanks. We found this already. No, it is not free ... and there is no demo, unfortunately. Bridge lite is part of the delivery, but I cannot test the pdf there. PDF is only available in the full version. Let's see if we find supporters... Cheers Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today Volume 15 Issue 1
The only way seems to be a plain paper scan... That is a pity. Mind you a simple scan would do for me. Anything to save you postage or the long walk. Still other issues here, all explained already... whatever I do in ADDITION to the paper, it costs me more time... and 100% of our readers do not want to go for electronic only anyway. I know it's a bit like stating the obvious, but have you tried running an Atari ST emulator (such as Gemulator - http://www.emulators.com/gemul8r.htm) on the PC and then using a pdf printer driver? I regard any encyclopedia (online or offline) as something which should be as unbiased as possible, and writing something about your own commercial product could not be regarded as this ... that's how I feel about it. Please do not regard this as criticism to anybody who does so (Rich, for example, is doing a great job and I cannot imagine how much time it takes him), but I would rather NOT do it for the products I sell. It would, however, not worry me, for non-commercial products, as you do not (really) want to compete, so I would not regard this as advertising. Re: [Ql-Users] The QL Future
Hi Rich, Believe it or not, there is still a burgeoning market out there for retro computers - I rely on them for my main source of income at the moment (since I was made redundant in December) and have successfully brought several new products to market (or made old ones available again), and all this helps. I understand this, although I did not sell any old hardware in the past few years, but that was never my aim anyway. When QPC came out and the QL hardware emulator ended, there was no point in me elling hardware. Over the past few years, we have sourced and brought to market: Yes, you are doing a very good job. That is why I forward interested people to you, by the way ;-) 2. The internet may be aimed at providing information, but 99% of sites (including wikis) are used for promotion of business - after all, not many people can afford to set up and maintain a website longterm without it providing some source of revenue. If someone is interested in reading about QPC2 for example, why leave it open ended as to where they can now obtain a copy from ? That is like telling someone about a wonderful product which will change their lives immensely, but if they want to get hold of it, sorry - just look on google and see if anyone else has listed it for sale... Please see other mail. Advertising is advertising, and a lot of internet info IS advertising. A Wikipedia (which I regard as some kind of Lexikon where you look up things and they are explained, but in an unbiased, non-advertising way) is something different in my opinion. THAT is a place where I do not expect (and do not want!!) advertising. It is OK to use a website, where it is clear one wants to sell something, for advertising, and advertise by being found through google etc. ... but that's something different. Even a link or something like (taken from J-M-S webseite to SHOW it could be advertising) is something different. Cheers Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
Re: [Ql-Users] The QL Future
Hi Norman, My Articles in QL Toady are a mystery to me. Not that I don't know what I'm writing (well, most of the time I do!) but the lack of feedback from almost everyone in the entire world - I sometimes feel that I'm writing for three people - Me, George and a chap called Hugh Rooms who called me to task some time back and made a contribution to the Assembly series. It is at least for FOUR people - I read it when I lay it out and enjoy reading it, by the way :-) Every time I ask for feedback, the silence is deafening. It is generally very hard to get feedback, and it was already hard 10 years ago. One last point, no-one makes money from the QL any more do they? It's a hobby now, that's all. I would think so too. I enjoy doing the magazine and hope to add my share to keep the QL scene alive... as you will be able to see when the new issue will arrive (all posted, so you should have it sooner or later ... except from the visitors of the Vienna show who got it personally delivered), I have not raised the price, and added extra pages as well. Fewer subscribers mean, the costs per issue increase - the amount of time I have to spend remains the same. And yes, it's a hobby for me too. I still think QL Today is a kind of glue which keeps us QLers together. I am sorry I cannot pay for the articles, and I am sorry I don't earn money from the QL anymore (when I did many, many years ago, it was a rather more enjoyable time than it is now in some cases, but money has to come in somehow...) ... and the advertisers merely pay and paid in the past years for the copying costs of their advertising page (nothing to earn there too). And, as Marcel wrote to Rich's mail - I also feel when I put things about my own products into Wikis, it could be regarded as self-advertising. Hi Urs, Who calls this summer? We don't, definitely not! The May was the worst May I can remember. It did not rain much today here in Vienna. Weather should improve in general towards the weekend. There were serious weather warnings for the Salzburg/Berchtesgaden area yesterday and today. I had a safe but wet journey today and will stay the night in in Salzburg (the city of Mozart). Yes, our journey was wet too ... enjoy staying at Salzburg - we like this city very much too and look forward to being there again this autumn. Hi Per, Although living in Bergen, Norway is a bit like living in Timbuctoo, as far as the rest of the world is concerned, I hope to be there ;o) Flying in late on Friday and out on Monday. Fine :-) It would be nice to stay somewhere where other QLers are holed up; alternatively somewhere cheap (and preferably both) Whats the best advice on this, please? Contact Gerhard? [Ql-Users] International QL-Meeting 2010 in Vienna - More News
Hi to all, does anybody know who will be visiting the show? As far as I can tell, there's Marcel Kilgus and Tony Firshman and Tony Tebby and Wolfgang Lenerz and, of course, myself. I won't come on my own, it looks as if I will bring the next issue 4, Volume 14 of QL Today with me :-) I will bring all of them, so whoever wants to pick it up there with a last-minute travel-decision will be able to get it. As my wife and I stay there for about a week, I can't bring all the usual stuff which you may remember from past shows (as part of the car will be filled). I'll bring some QPCs and QPCPrints, which I can prepare at the show. If you want ANYTHING ELSE, please let me know in advance so that I can bring it for you. I guess I'll be at the show most of Saturday (main day?) and, of course, Sunday ... also for the train event! Looking forward to another great show and hoping to see many of you there, best regards Jochen -- Jochen Merz Software - Kaiser-Wilhelm-Str. 302 - D-47169 Duisburg Tel. +49-(0)203-502011 Fax +49-(0)203-502012 Email: s...@j-m-s.com Homepage: http://SMSQ.J-M-S.COM ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

The event is organized by Gerhard Plavec and I am sure, that it will be a great and interesting meeting. (Infos: http://kuel.org/) I have two news for the meeting: First: Thanks to Daniele Terdina I am allowed to show a Beta-version of the forthcoming Qemulator for MacOSX! I think this is great news for all MacOSX-users in the QL-world (like me;-)), as the emulator looks very promising, even in Beta-stage. Secondly: If all goes well I will shortly be proud owner of a Q40-system (thanks to Rich Mellor and Derek Steward, who tries to fix the board at the moment) and will show it on the QL-Meeting, too. Hopefully this will interest more people in real QL-hardware. You know that I started a little initiative for a new production-run of Q60s. Although it isn´t 100% sure, that there will a last production run (some parts of the Q60 are hard to find in the meantime and Derek would have to solder and test all boards alone, which is a huge task) there is still hope for new Q60s. Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today Volume 14 Issue 3 is on its way to all the readers
As Herb Schaaf was looking for 'true' randomness on page 6, may I suggest that QL Today delivery date be used as the basis for 'true' randomness? Or rather, the randomness of the various postal services involved? Well, we can see a bundle of arrivals today ... not too random, it seems. Otherwise, Jochen or Geoff (will the guilty one please stand up!) might have unintentionally started another 'random' generator with the spelling of my name - a quick glance through the mag (cover, contents list, news and page 17 article) reveals 3 different spellings so far - who can work out the correct spelling (clue: my signature below...)? ;-)) Oh dear! Well, there's me laying it out, Bruce and Geoff doing the proof-reading. I guess we're all guilty then. (Actually, not a bad issue at all!)
