[Ql-Users] Announcement for the 40th Anniversary of the Sinclair QL in Dormagen (Germany)

2024-02-03 Thread pjw via Ql-Users
This is not my invitation to make, so apologies if Im stepping on
anyone's toes, but I thought this information needed to be more widely
disseminated. So heres a mash-up of information gleaned so far. Detlef
writes on QL Forum:

/Announcement for the 40th Anniversary of the Sinclair QL in Dormagen
(Germany)/

/Hi all,
the meeting in Germany will take place at the weekend of 17/18/19 of
May 24 in Dormagen.
It will take place in a Hotel. Dormagen is located between the
airports of Düsseldorf and Cologne.
From there for both directions is a so called "Regio"-Railway
connection available (less than 1/2h to Dormagen Railway station).
From Railway to Hotel is about 1.8 km (a bit more than a mile). If
there are not to many, i can pick you up at the railway station.

Otherwise you need to used the taxi service at the station.
Even originally planned as a "German" meeting, all are welcome.
/

/Now the room rate is 89.00 Euro for a single room and 6 Euro for
overnight parking.
The name of the hotel is Hoetche https://hoettche.de/. Just switch to
English.
There is a contingent of 10 Rooms reserved for us, just mention
"Computertreffen" at booking.
As already addressed you are able to get from the airports of Cologne
and Düsseldorf to Dormagen within 0.5h.

/

/<> All further updates and details for that meeting will be published
at this link in English: www.dieobis.de/home/en

The German version is at www.dieobis.de ./

Will this be a breath of fresh air? Or a last gasp? Either way, its
got to be worth going! I hope many international QL pundits and
punters will turn up. I still have fond memories of the 2010 meeting
in Vienna, Austria.

2024-01-13 Thread pjw via Ql-Users
Well, whatever you guys choose to believe, please no one try to "fix"
it as this behaviour appears to be consistent across the board - at
least as far as JS, Minerva and SMSQ/E are concerned. If programmers
keep their indices in order the issue should never arise anyway.

I tend to agree. x$ (a to b) where b is smaller than a should rise
an error. The only way that would make any kind of sense to me would
be if this returned the array contents in the reverse order. Now
THAT would be a cool feature!

Re: [Ql-Users] bug in String handling

2024-01-08 Thread pjw via Ql-Users
Line 105: The construct a$(n to n - 1) represents the empty string
(even when n = 1). Since it is replicated in JS, Minerva and SMSQ/E Im
assuming it is by design. It also makes sense as there would be no
other way to represent a string slice of null.

Line 115: I guess a$( to 0) is read as a$(1 to 0) which fits the
criteria above.

Line 120: a$(0) should be fine also. It represents the string length.
Assignment to this location is also acceptable:

DIM a$(10): remark Define/Make space
a$(0) = 10:        remark Set size
BGET#channel; a$(to 10):  remark Get 10 bytes from channel

This works with JS and Minerva (both with TK2 V3.32+), and SMSQ/E

Line 110: This is clearly an error and is treated as such.

Per
On 08/01/2024 17:51, Wolfgang Lenerz via Ql-Users wrote:

Hi,

Line 120 is due to the fast that strings are not 0 based index. So
what would a$(0) be?
Under SMSQ/E at least, print a$(0) in the above example would give
"10" - which is the length of the string... Since this seems to be
an unorthodox behaviour, it's no wonder Qlib balks at it.

Line 105 makes no sense to me, just what should one expect from
that? (maybe the reversed string (2 to 4)???), this should probably
raise an error, just like line 110 does.

line 115 results in an empty strin,g - there is nothing before 0, so
nothing can be obtained. Again, this should probably raise an error.

Have fun

WOlfgang

Hi,
Some other anomalies

100 a$ = "1234567890"
105 b$ = a$(4 to 3): REMark This works
110 REMark c$ = a$(4 to 2): REMark This fails with an error.
115 c$ = a$( to 0) : REMark  no error returned
120 c$ = a$(0):    : REMark  no error returned  BUT ERROR IF
QLIBERATED

125 pause:stop

The problem of slicing strings was already discused here many years
ago. I think it was Marcel Kilgus who gave us some explanation.

Dilwyn,

I havent exactly put QubLink through its paces yet, but it appears to
work fine on QPC2.

On SMSQmulator V2.33 with SMSQ/E V3.38, however, the program starts up
as a button all right, but when I hit the button all I get is:

Line 2235 String is not numeric. Fini.

BTW I presume you mean QWIRC, not QIRC.

QubLink fills a space not covered by Qwirc, so thats a Good Thing. You
very modestly forgot to mention your own WinDOS

which does much the same ;o)

Sadly Qwirc has become increasingly "incompatible", not due to some
strange digital atrophy but due to changes in the inner workings of
the various platforms. A new version, which has been in the works for
quite some time, and is now near to completion, may be released one day..

If you write a lot of programs you will occasionally corrupt your hard
disk etc. Occupational hazard!

On the occasions its happened to me Ive tried various things,
including the two Tebby hard disk tools. My problems didnt, perhaps,
fit with what theyre supposed to fix, as they never seemed to make any
difference..

What did make a difference in my case was QLWARZ, or rather what lead
me to stitching it together in the first place. When it gets to
corrupts files or directories the program crashes (yes!) Then I just
keep typing CONTINUE until it picks itself up and runs again. At the
end of the process, everything that can be saved is copied. Some
damaged files remain damaged, but at least they are "legal" and dont
mess with your system.

Clearly, if you need to retrieve irreplaceable material after that you
will need to go back to the original win drive (QLWARZ doesnt fiddle
with it other than renaming it) and set to work with a file editor,
such as Wolfgang Lenerz'es Wined (https://www.wlenerz.com/qlstuff/#wined)!
