first, congratulations on getting maried - or is it your first
anniversary yet! ;-)

So send in your contributions as well, please :-))
I'm already typing mine up. I won't say exactly what I'm doing - it's a
surprise.

Cheers,

Crikey, it's amazing the QL ever worked at all! Mine did though (but I never
tried the network and only used a serial port for the bundled thermal
printer I got with it from Dixons). It had JM ROMs and, if I remember
correctly because I no longer have it, was a build D13 (though someone will
probably tell me D13s didn't ship with JM ROMs :o) so I guess I missed out
on the more important fixes - not that I noticed. I can't wait for the next
episode in the saga. I wonder if the BBC4 TV programme this Thursday about
Sir Clive and Chris Curry will mention the QL...

P.S. The 'new look' magazine is fine; even if a bit thinner it has not lost
any of its quality. The font is still pretty large compared with some
magazines. I wonder if other European post offices have started charging by
size as well as weight like Royal Mail. If so, a thicker A5 format might
work out cheaper to post than A4 for the same weight.

P.S. The 'new look' magazine is fine; even if a bit thinner it has not
lost any of its quality.

Thank you. I did some tests and it really feels thinner because of the
80g cover paper instead of the 160g. However, using 160g would mean:
losing more pages. Actually, the way it is, it was heavier than 100g
anyway... but as I sent it from Austria, it was affordable.
(the subscription price only works out by sending it from Austria...
or send a package to the UK and have most items sent from there).

The font is still pretty large compared with
some magazines. I wonder if other European post offices have started
charging by size as well as weight like Royal Mail. If so, a thicker A5
format might work out cheaper to post than A4 for the same weight.

Well, it took Royal Mail a long time to catch up with Deutsche Post.
They started to charge by size many years ago (everything greater C-long
triples the price, no matter if it is 5g or 500g ... no matter if it is
A4 or A5 ... and then by thickness ... if thicker than 1cm, you go for

4 times the price).
This, however, does not apply to the Austrian post, luckily.
I will send the issues before Xmas from Austria, and mid of March as
well, so it is not a serious problem for the next two issues.
Also, adding 2 or 4 pages will not be a major problem either.

So send in your contributions as well, please :-))

I think we have done a fairly good decision as well, being able to
drop the price slightly (instead of having to raise it considerably,
as we skipped last year)... and considering that 13 years ago, when
QL Today started, 12 or 14 of the 56 pages or so were ads ... which
they aren't nowadays ...

Again, please send in your contributions, as Tony's next part of the
article won't fill a whole issue ... and we still want to have a good
mix, even with fewer pages.

Jochen

No, I'm not knocking our posties. I think that they do a fantastic job.
Our postie (a very pleasant female!!) only has time to greet her
customers on the run so to speak as she always seems to have plenty
more to deliver when she's been to us at anything up to noon
(occasionally later) but she always has a smile and a tickle behind the
ear for one or more of our cats. - jealous? Who, ME? She keeps me
supplied with GPO red elastic bands which she says are rubbish but I
find quite serviceable.

More and more often these days I find that she is also leaflet dropping
along with the genuine post. This must add tremendously to the weight of
the mail sacks and the time to complete the walk. No wonder she
doesn't have time to search through for my copy of QLToday!! (Back on
topic?)

Regards to all, including our posties.

Well, I brought ALL issues of ALL our readers (Bruces and mine) to the
post last Tuesday in Austria, so they should arrive every day.

Strange that they made it quicker half way through Germany to Ralf
than to Marcel in the South.

I have had already some inquiries: this issue is the start of volume 14,
there's more from Tony to come (and it is VERY interesting, promised).
I still have a few spare issues here with me, so everybody who would
like to subscribe now can get the full volume, starting with the current
issue, of course.

If you fax the subscription form or subscribe via the SSL form on
the SMSQ website, then I am happy to mail the issue from here this
week :-)

Used to get that effect here with Quanta mag. In times gone by, they
used to try to time release of a magazine to the days just before a

AFTER the workshop.

Yes, it is a *good read*. I also hope, that Tony also reveals some of the
software things. Say, the SPK (Sinclair's software production kit, the key
mdv with the _ files), a bit of QJumps internal programs (qplq (also for
daisywheels), sedit and so on), the arrival of the Pointer Interface
(written under Sinclair or very later, who knows...?) and so on.

Things that would be very interesting for all.
