You could also buy a copy of Cueshell which will move, delete or copy
whole sub directories. You can, for instance, copy a sub directory and
it will re-create any sub directories within the original. Great program

Re: [ql-users] QCDEZE

2002-04-24 Thread Derek Stewart

I had problems with QCDEZE on the Q60, but it was solved a long time ago,
pre-Hove meeting, with the IDE driver, it seems that the IDE CDROM driver I
was using, did not work correctly.

The version on the Q60 Distribution disks works with QCDEZE, which is very
good.

If someone can help me will appreciated.
I am moving all my old programs still on microdrive or
FD to the HD of my QPC and Q40, to do this and make
the programs working i am using the dev_use facility.
It seems that the dev driver does not work, example :

 dev_use 1,win8_Games_ --- i can see the file on dev1_
but not use them, the command wcopy dev1_,ram1_ give
 the error not found !

 dev_use 1,win8_Games_Chess_ give me directory of dev1_
 empty.

It is curious because it happens on QPC and Q40 in the
same way, this means that probably i am doing
 something wrong...
 Any idea ?

If you rename the DEV driver using DEV_USE FLP, and rename the floppy
disk driver to something like FLP_USE FDK, then DIR FLP1_ will
actually list whatever you defined DEV1_ as and DIR FDK1_ will do the
same for the floppy disk, so that the floppy disk can still be used at
 the same time.

The reason for doing this is that it is easier to change the name of
the DEV device than patch the software to run from DEV1_

WCOPY from a DEV is indeed fraught with possible hiccups, I try to
avoid that where possible. The files menu of QPAC2 seems to cope with
DEV though. You will probably find it easier to WCOPY WIN1_CHESS_ TO
RAM1_ (i.e use the full name).

Another way to run software which expects to run from disk is to copy
it all to RAM1_ then RAM_USE FLP:FLP_USE FDK

A general rule of thumb for running floppy disk configured software
 from hard disk:

 create a directory, e.g. MAKE_DIR win1_games_:MAKE_DIR
 win1_games_chess_

copy the software from floppy to hard disk: WCOPY FLP1_ TO
 WIN1_games_chess_

set up DEV devices: DEV_USE 1,win1_games_chess_
 DEV_USE 2,win1_games_chess_

rename the DEV device: DEV_USE FLP

rename the floppy disk driver to allow continued use: FLP_USE FDK

After use, reset with DEV_USE DEV:FLP_USE FLP

 Hope this helps.

Re: [ql-users] Q40 I/O - 2nd IDE port

2001-07-26 Thread Derek Stewart

Hi Jerome,

I use a second IDE board on my Q40, actually it is a PC CDROM IDE card with
a single IDE port on it.

It maps to the secondary IDE address and work great on the Q40. I have a
Syquest EZ135 on it, which backs up my BBS to Syquest disk. This not a
complete solution, but it does work.

Before Thierry's CDROM driver I was intending to use a 250mb IDE Zip drive
for backups, but maybe the more subtle solution would be to use CDR or even
CDRW disks.

This would mean writing a CD Creator program, or porting one from Linux.

I am not sure how much work the porting would be, or would it be easier to
write it from scratch in SMSQ/E.

Re: [ql-users] qxltool and multipartitions

2001-07-12 Thread Derek Stewart

The Q40 SMSQ/E does not say that anthing other than WIN1_ can be used with
the WIN_FORMAT command.

But if you enter WIN_FORMAT 1 and try FORMAT WIN2_, you get a Access Denied
error message.

So the correct syntx for WIN_FORMAT is WINFORMAT win_drive

This assumes that the WNx_ device has been previousily defined in the
WIN_DRIVE command. And as Roy says, to link in a new Syquest drive
cartridge, a new win_drive command as to be entered, ie for WIN3_ :
WIN_DRIVE 3,2
on the secondary master for the whole partition on the disk or WIN_DRIVE
3,2,0 for completeness.

I can not get QXLTOOL to generate a QXL.WIN file correctly, the QXL.WIN is
created but leaves the channel open and the QXLTOOL program still running.
But I wonder if that is correct and the QXL.WIN file can be accessed by
channel ID. It all work OK on DOS and Linux.

I was going to backup my BBS system to a CDRW disk in a QXL.WIN over a
serial link to a Linux box which would write the CDRW disk. Pity that it
could not be done on the Q40/60

Re: [ql-users] Derek Stewart BB

2001-06-24 Thread Derek Stewart

Hi Ian,

The BBS now runs on a Q40, as the Aurora/Supergold card with Superhermes and
Qubide was always giving problems.

The Qubide partition kept on unloading and the partition table courrupted
itself at least three times.

So I required a stable platform and the Q40 is it, the hard disk is some
stable and the Syquest drives run better for removable backup storage.

Although I would like a tape streamer, but I am having trouble writting the
device driver for the floppy disk based cable streamer. I was hoping to work
out the FTAPE device driver from Linux, but things are not that easy. There
is not much information on the FLP_CONTROL thing.

The reason why users get their username and password entered automatically,
is because the login screen contains a ACSII 5 or ENQ control codes which
tells QTPI to send the username and password get passed to the BBS system.
This also assumes that the user has setup the username and password in the
QTPI phonebook correctly.

If you are using the PC, then the rubbish terminal in windows does not allow
this. Yet another reason for using a QL or QPC2

Re: [ql-users] Holborn View BBS

2001-06-22 Thread Derek Stewart

Hi there,

My BBS system now runs on a Q40 and is configured to run with QTPI... he
main problem is the QTPI ANSI is not quite PC ANSI.

Which makes some people that use a PC to log on to the system, get black
text on black background. on the initial screens. But this gets solved when
the user reaches the main menu.

I am going to remove all the ANSI codes from the intial screens to avoid
problems with QL users who must use a PC for comms.

As Dilwyn says the phone number is 01773-741335 - 24 hour dedicated line.

I have tried to collect all the Internet software in one place, nothing
fancy except the system runs on a SMSQ/E compatiable machine.

The Fido net is dead at present and I have been trying to others to use it.

I am very pleased with my one, it is very stable. I did use it on the BBS,
but the SMSQ/E had problems with some of the Pbox mailing software, which I
am looking into. This maybe just a re-compile on Q40, as this maybe just the

Hopefully since Phil released the sources, I might try and delvelop the
