I will do the same:

100 pounds plus 25 pounds a month towards living expenses for up to a year as I
am not clear as to the project definition but certainly willing to help fund
Nasta's effort. I imagine Dave can help in getting the USD to pounds most
effectively for people in the US wanting to help.

 100 what?

Why, 100 question 'marks' of course.

Pity they were replaced by the euro (which is what I meant, of course).

Re: [ql-users] Printer help

2004-04-09 Thread Dilwyn Jones
I had the same problems with a 740 but, eventually, the answer was
that if
the CD was in the drive and W98 wanted info that was one place. The
other
was the Windows 98 CD. IF you have the room on your hard disk, copy
the
W98 directory on to it and every time Windows wants something, point
it to
that directory and it will remember in future.

The other problem is USB ports. Have you looked at your device
manager to
see if they are installed? If that is not so, there are most of
your
problems. Try re-installing the drivers, it might help!!

If this problem will not go away, email me privately and I will have
a
 go!!
Been there, done that...still waiting for a reply from Epson. As I've
said in previous emails about this, other USB devices work fine so the
interface is working OK.

Re: [ql-users] Printer help

2004-04-09 Thread Dilwyn Jones
Other devices work OK. What is shown in System, Device Manager roughly
matches yours, but only 2 USB 1.something ports. It ain't the
motherboard USB, that doesn't work, I know that for certain, so I've
disabled it in the BIOS and removed the original drivers. The current
USB is a PCI USB card plugged in the PC. It was recognised, drivers
installed and shows up properly in System,Device Manager and
recognises when other USB bits and bobs are plugged in. It actually
recognises when the printer is plugged in and unplugged and reacts in
the usual USB way (new hardware detected...) as long as the printer is
switched on.

I've just come to the conclusion that Epson's software just can't talk
to this particular USB ports card. What I intend to do when I get time
off is to start from scratch again and remove all the boards from the
PC, start witht he USB card and install the printer before any other
cards are added in case something else installed is getting in the
way.

Have you got any other USB devices working? It sounds to me as if
you
haven't installed your motherboard support for USB properly.

Have a look in the control panel under System, Device Manager
Universal
Serial Bus Controllers. Mine shows 3 USB root Hubs, one USB 2.0 root
Hub, a
PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller and 3 PCI to USB Universal Host
controllers. This matches my configuration of 3 USB 1 sockets, and
one USB
 2.0.

If you have not got them, I suggest you look on the website for your
motherboard (or motherboard chip set) and download the USB drivers
for the
 board/chipset.

 Regards, and good luck!

 Jeremy

No, it still don't work. At least the PC recognises somethingis
plugged into it - the 'new hardware detected' appears when I plug
in
the printer, even though it's unknown device.

Looking at the troubleshooting info, the CD should install an
'Apson
parallel printer port' (it does indeed) and an 'Epson USB' (which
it
doesn't). Yet the advice is: if the printer isn't automatically
set to
USB, manually set the port to 'Epson USB' but that device is never
  installed, so how can I???

This is gradually driving me up the wall.

If they make sense it is OK. If not try an 'automatic'

I did. A partial installation is actually a full installation
it
seems, but a non-working installation defaulting to all sorts
of
  wrong
defaults. Uninstall clears it, but next time you try to install
it
goes back to the same useless defaults. It only seems to clear
to
clean machine status by finding epson's .inf file for the
printer.
Even though the software's been uninstalled, Windows seems to
  remember
what and where the driver was so the only way to make it forget

To test if it's the onboard USB I've ordered a cheap USB-PCI
card.
Only two sockets on it, and it only costs about a fiver, so if
that
works I'll know the onboard USB needs to go to hospital.

OK. Will await further reports from 'Jones HQ' ... :-)

[ql-users] QL equipment, mags etc needing good home

2004-04-09 Thread Maurice Buxton
Dear all.

I've just moved, and extracted my old QL setup from under the stairs where
it's been for quite a number of years. I'm most unlikely to set it up again
(sorry!) so would like to dispense with it.

There are two original QLs, one JS, one JM, plus a Trump Card, twin disk
drive, two monitors (one small green screen, one colour), Toolkit and
Lightning ROMs, a box of assorted disks and microdrives with software, a
quantity of QL World mags and old copies of Quanta, plus odds and ends like
serial cables and the Jan Jones Superbasic book.

I'd better say that I've no idea whether all this stuff will work after all
these years. However, if anyone's interested, please email or phone me
(number below).

Regards

In 'View devices by connection' is the USB port, or USB card listed ?

If it is look at its 'Properties', and go to 'Driver', then 'Update'
from the supplied CD with the Printer.

Other options to try are :

Go to the Epsom web site, and seek their technical help.

Do a search on the web and see if there are any Freeware drivers
available that will cover you hardware. Surprising are much is
available.

Install it on another PC - where it will probably work straightaway :-).

Win98 can be very 'stubborn' with devices and conflicts, as plug and
play is not perfect for all hardware circumstances.
