Patti Page Re-records Doggie Hit to Promote Humane Pet Treatment
Fri. October 31.2008 4:37 PM EDT

In a bid to promote the adoption and humane treatment of pets, Patti Page has
recorded a new version of her 1953 hit, Doggie in the Window. The veteran pop
star, who will turn 81 on Nov. 8, is contributing the song to the Humane
Society of the United States for use in its campaigns to save and care for
homeless animals and stamp out inhumane puppy mills. New lyrics for the
familiar tune were written by Page's publicist, Sanford Brokaw, and Chris
Gantry, composer of the 1968 Glen Campbell classic, Dreams of the Everyday
Housewife. The revised song will be used in public service announcements and
can be downloaded from the Humane Society Web site. Currently celebrating her
65th year in show business, Page will release a new album, Best Country Songs,
on Nov. 22. Her autobiography, This Is My Song, is due out in January.

Important Info You Need to Check Out!

 PLEASE do this ! ! !
I didn't know about this, but I checked my phone and there it
wasHopefully, none of us will ever need this, but it's nice to
 know
that something is in place..just in case.
Please look if you don't know about your cell phone location feature!
Thought this was worth passing along.
You may remember that a young woman was recently abducted from a Target
parking lot in Overland Park , a suburb of Kansas City
Her body was discovered many miles away in Missouri.
They were able to locate her by the
sequence of cell phone towers that picked up her cell phone location.
She had not attempted to dial out,
but when her family was trying to call her
the towers could Sense her phone.
Sadly, the authorities were not able to reach her in time.
However, they were ; ;able to locate her body
which was in an area where they
never would have searched without the cell phone tower information.
The cell phone 'locator' can be either set on: 1. 911 only'
 ... in which  case you must dial out to be located;
 2. or it can be set to be on all the time Location on
There is NO higher battery usage from having it on all of the time.
With it on all the time you can be located
by emergency services through the police if you fail to respond
 (sick, injured or worse).
I found that on my phone 'location' ;was not on.
I turned it on so my phone can be traced.
ALL cell phones have this feature.
 It's called Location.
 1. It's under the: Settings tool.
(on my phone it's under Settings,
 then I go to Location).
 2. Once you turn this on, THEN your phone is traceable
(select Location On' instead of '911 Only).
To stay safe, everyone Needs to check their phone and turn this on!!!
Please pass the word to everyone you know.
 This is some good information
 that every body should have.

[RecipesAndMore] Here's to the Girls--and Their Guys

2008-11-01 Thread Sherri Crum

HERE'S TO THE GIRLS!!!

What's so poignant about this picture? Well, it shows a line of little
girls holding hands facing the immensity of ocean waves.
Alone they might be washed away, but together they stand strong.
Thank you each for holding my hand somewhere along the way when I was
facing a wave of my own. I hope you will reach for my hand when your own
wave threatens.

All of us girls..
Old and young...
Near and far...
Hold special memories of good times we've shared.
We've had our share of hard times when our friends were there to make us
feel better.
We've shared...
our hearts
our time
our secrets
our fears
our hopes
and our dreams.

Let us never break the chain of friends!

Someone will always be prettier.

Someone will always be smarter.

Their house will be bigger.

They will drive a better car.

Their children will do better in school.

And their husband will fix more things around the house.

So let it go, Be Happy!
And love yourself and your circumstances.
Think about it.

The prettiest woman in the world can have trouble in her heart.
And the most highly favoured woman on your job may be unable to have

So, again, love you.
Love who you are.
Look in the mirror in the morning and smile and say

[RecipesAndMore] How You Know

2008-11-01 Thread steve doyle
The way to tell if a friend is true
is to pay attention to what they do.

Because some will say one thing and do another.
So quickly they can betray each other!

A true friend will always have your back,
defending you from attack.

A real friend will always show you respect.
With a good friend, you'll be able to connect.

You know you have a friend when you go to them in time of need.
And they'll come to your rescue with tremendous speed.

[RecipesAndMore] Baked Apple with Vanilla Sauce

2008-11-01 Thread Angelique in Texas

Baked Apple with Vanilla Sauce
Ingredients:
3
1 tsp
40 g / 1 1/3 oz
90 g / 3 oz
20 g / 2/3 oz
1 pk
1/4 l / 1 cup
100 g / 3 1/3 oz
1
apple
lemon juice
hazelnuts, chopped
red currant jelly
butter, unsalted
instant vanilla sauce
milk
mascarpone cheese
vanilla bean
Serves 3 - 498 cal per serving
Prep-time: 10 min. - Total-time: 45 min.
It's best to use tart, crisp cooking apples for making baked apples. For
the Vanilla Sauce use an instant sauce, which does not require cooking.
If you can't get vanilla sauce, use instant vanilla pudding instead and
just double the amount of milk for the whole package or use half of the
package with the amount recommended on package directions. Wash and dry
the apples, than thoroughly remove the core using a core cutter. Drizzle
the inside of the apples with lemon juice. Put the apples in a greased
baking dish. For the filling mix chopped hazelnuts with current jelly
and stuff the apples. Put a small piece of butter (unsalted) on top of
each apple. Pre-heat the oven to 355 F Bake the apples on the middle
rung for about 40 minutes until the apple skin bursts slightly open.
Meanwhile mix the vanilla sauce powder with 1 cup of milk. Stir in the
mascarpone cheese until smooth. Cut the vanilla bean open lengthwise
using a small sharp knife. Scratch out the pulp and stir in the vanilla
sauce. Pour the vanilla sauce on a plate and place the baked apples on
top.

[RecipesAndMore] Beijinho de Coco

2008-11-01 Thread Angelique in Texas

Beijinho de Coco
Ingredients:
14 oz / 1 can
30g / 1oz
100g / 3.5 oz
condensed milk, sweetened
butter, unsalted
coconut flakes
Serves 25 - 88 cal per serving
Prep-time: 15 min. - Total-time: 60 min.
Beijinho de Coco is a Brazilian sweet. It's a treat, which is actually
prepared for children birthdays. But it's not only delicious for the
little ones. Meanwhile I prepare this treat for every party.. To prepare
Beijinho de Coco you will need sweetened condensed milk (don't use
evaporated milk!). Pour the milk in a small casserole and add the
butter. Heat the condensed milk over medium heat stir constantly, but do
not boil. After approx. 10 minutes the creme starts to thicken and you
can draw lines with the cooking spoon, so you can see the bottom of the
pot for a moment. Now the creme has the right consistency. Pour the
creme on a plate and let cool completely to set. Grease your hands
lightly with butter and form little Beijinho de Coco (coconut balls).
Roll in coconut flakes and put in the refrigerator until serving.

[RecipesAndMore] Black Forrest Dessert

2008-11-01 Thread Angelique in Texas

Black Forrest Dessert
Ingredients:
500 g / 1 lb
4 tbsp
500 g / 1 lb
100 g / 3 1/3 oz
1 pk. / 1/4 oz
1/8 l / 1/2 cup
100 g / 3 1/3 oz
canned cherries
Kirsch Schnaps
Quark
sugar
Vanilla sugar
Salt
milk
chocolate sprinkles
Serves 6 - 307 cal per serving
Prep-time: 15 min. - Total-time: 15 min.
If you like to prepare the Black Forrest Dessert for many people, you
can easily triple or fourfold the recipe and serve it in a large glass
bowl instead of dessert bowls. You can use canned cherries or frozen
cherries. Drain them well (thaw frozen cherries) and in a bowl mix the
cherries with the kirsch (schnapps made from cherries) and let stand. In
another bowl combine the quark (see recipe) with sugar and vanilla
sugar. Substitute quark with farmer's cheese if you like to avoid the
effort of making the quark. Add just a pinch of salt to enhance the
flavor. Add milk to the quark and whisk until frothy. In turns fill the
cherries, quark creme and chocolate granules in dessert bowls ending
with chocolate granules. If desired decorate with whipped cream and
cherries.

[RecipesAndMore] Lemon-Orange-Creme

2008-11-01 Thread Angelique in Texas

Lemon-Orange-Creme
Ingredients:
1/4 l (4.75 oz)
150g (5.25oz)
2
3
30g (1 oz)
3
water
sugar
lemon
eggs
starch flour
oranges
Serves 6 - 191 cal per serving
Prep-time: 30 min. - Total-time: 120 min.
Bring the water with sugar and a little bit lemon peel to a boil.
Separate the eggs. Use a little bit cold water to dissolve the starch
and combine with the egg yolks. Pour the egg yolk-starch-mix in the
boiling water and stir until the water is boiling again. Set a side to
cool. Stir in the juice of 2 lemons. Cut the oranges in half and cut out
the pulp. Drain the pulp; put in the mixer and mash. Stir the orange
puree into the lemon creme. If the lemon-orange-creme begins to thicken
beat the egg white until it's stiff. Carefully add and mix the egg white
with the lemon-orange-creme. Cut zigzag's in the edges of the lemon
halves using kitchen scissors. Pour the creme into the orange halves.
You can also use red wineglasses to serve the creme instead of the
orange halves. Put in the refrigerator until set.

Cut each type of meat into 6 even pieces. Put them into 3 separate
bowls and sprinkle generously with white wine. Cover the bowls and
refrigerate for at least 12 hours. Preheat the oven to 160 oC (325 oF).
In a flameproof earthenware casserole, heat the goose fat over low heat,
put in the onions and sweat for several minutes. Lay the leek on top of
the onions, then the potatoes. Add the 'bouquet garni', peppercorns and
garlic and arrange the 3 meats separately on top, one type to the left,
one in the middle, one in the right. Pour over the marinade and the
remaining whine. Salt lightly, add the chicken stock and lay the pieces
of calf's foot on top. Put the lid on the casserole. Mix the flour with
a little cold water to make a soft paste. Spread this paste between the
top of the casserole and the lid to make an airtight seal. Cook in the
low
oven for 4 hours. Service: Present the casserole at the table
just as is. Break the seal and lift off the lid.

Note: - This a Baeckenoffa, a beef, pork and lamb stew: this recipe
is from Alsace. Originally, the country people took their dish to the
baker to cook in his oven. They would arrive early in the morning,
usually on the baker's closing day, when the fire had gone out, but was
still warm - the perfect temperature to simmer this family dish very
slowly without having to pay for the fuel.

[RecipesAndMore] Tip: Prevent Curly Bacon By Using Your Oven

2008-11-01 Thread Angelique in Texas

Prevent Curly Bacon By Using Your Oven
To keep bacon from curling you can put it the oven. Line foil on a
cookie sheet. Lay bacon slices one at a time next to each other on
sheet. Put into a 350 degree F oven and bake till done. Keep an eye on
it so you can take it out according to how you like it cooked. Soft or
crisp.
Drain the grease before you take the bacon off. Bacon usually sticks a
bit to the foil but is not hard to get off. Draining makes it easier for
clean up. Just lift the foil off and throw away. My bacon has never
curled using this method and does not take very long. Another bonus is
that there is no splattering from the frying pan. Source:

This month's recipes were contributed by
members of the National Federation of the Blind of Oregon.

Chewy Pecan Bars
Crust Ingredients:
2 cups flour
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
Filling Ingredients:
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup light corn syrup
3 eggs, well beaten
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups pecans, crushed
Method: Mix crust ingredients together until mixture resembles
cornmeal. Pat into lightly greased 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake fifteen
minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from oven.
To make filling, place all filling ingredients in a saucepan and
bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour hot mixture over crust and
return to oven. Bake bars for thirty minutes. Cool pan on rack. Cut into
bars while still warm.

Hot Chicken Salad
Ingredients:
4 cups cooked chicken, cubed
2 cups cooked rice
1 cup celery, chopped
1/2 cup almonds, slivered
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 can condensed cream soup
1/4 cup green or red pepper, chopped
2 tablespoons onion, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup potato chips, crushed
Method: Combine all ingredients except potato chips and mix well.
Place mixture in greased 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Top with crushed potato
chips. Bake for forty minutes at 350 degrees.

French Onion Soup (cratinée)
Ingredients:
1 large white onion or two smaller ones, thinly sliced
Pat of butter or margarine
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup dry red wine (optional)
2 quarts or liters reconstituted beef consommé (concentrate or in cartons)
Dash Worcestershire sauce
Touch diced garlic (optional)
2 thin slices per serving, French baguette--dried not toasted
Approximately 1/3 pound per person Gruyère cheese, coarsely grated, maybe
more-there is no such thing as too much cheese.
Method: Pour consommé into a large saucepan or soup pot and dilute if
directed to do so. Bring to a boil. Sauté the onion slices in the butter or
margarine, reduce heat, and continue to stir until onions are very soft and
almost liquid. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir it in thoroughly.
Add the wine and continue to stir as the alcohol evaporates. Add the onion
mixture to the soup stock and stir in thoroughly. Bring the soup to a boil
and add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic if desired. Add salt and pepper
to taste. Allow soup to simmer covered for at least one-and-a-half hours,
stirring occasionally to prevent onions from sticking to the bottom.
Simmering longer does no harm.
Meanwhile grate the cheese and dry the bread slices. Preheat oven to
minimum temperature setting, then turn it off. Arrange bread on cookie
sheet and place in oven. Turn over after a half hour.
Just before serving, sprinkle approximately half the grated cheese
into the soup, stirring slowly until the cheese almost disappears. Pour the
soup into an ovenproof soup pot or individual ovenproof bowls. Set the oven
rack so that the top of the pot or bowls will be near the element. Turn the
broiler on high. When it is fully heated, quickly float the dried bread on
top of the soup, sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top, and place
pot/bowls on a pizza pan or cookie sheet under the broiler. Remove after
two to three minutes when the cheese begins to bubble. Serves six-well
maybe only four if they like it.

 Ice-Box Fruit Bran Muffins
 by Corinne Vieville

It's always a treat to resurrect an old favorite.
When I saw my friend scooping
out the batter from a large crock,
I remembered this hearty, healthy muffin
that is always ready. She keeps the ever-bubbly batter
in the refrigerator,
where it remains ready for the
next moment of craving for a warm breakfast bread.
This is an easy way to wake up the household with a smile when they
smell the muffins.

Ingredients:
5 teaspoons baking soda
4 cups 100 percent bran cereal
2 cups boiling water, divided
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 quart buttermilk
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups granola or similar cereal
2 cups of your choice of dates, raisins, and nuts
Method: Place baking soda in a cup or small bowl and all bran cereal
in a medium bowl. Add a half cup boiling water to the soda and the rest to
the cereal. Let both cool. Cream shortening and sugar in a large bowl; add
eggs one at a time. Then add soda

A single candle can illuminate an entire room. A true friend lights up

And the most highly favoured woman on your job may be unable to have
children.
And the richest woman you know, she's got the car, the house, the
clothesmight be lonely.
And the word says if 'I have not Love, I have nothing.'

So, again, love you.
Love who you are.
Look in the mirror in the morning and smile and say

'I am too blessed to be stressed and too anointed to be disappointed!'

I like that!

'Winners make things happen.
Losers let things happen'

Be Blessed ladies and pass this on to encourage another woman.

'To the world you might be one person,
But to one person you just might be the world'.

HERE'S TO YOU MY FRIENDS!

You are loved with an everlasting love, and underneath are the
Everlasting Arms.

[RecipesAndMore] Cat Jokes

2008-11-01 Thread steve doyle
Did you hear about the cat who drank 5 bowls of water? He set a new lap record.

What is the difference between a cat and a comma? One has the paws before the
claws and the other has the clause before the pause.

If there are ten cats on a boat and one jumps off, how many cats are left on
the boat? None! They were copy cats.

What is the cat's favourite magazine? Good Mousekeeping.

The Strength of a Man.

The strength of a man
isn't seen in the width of his shoulders.
It's seen in the width of his arms that circle you.

The strength of a man isn't in the deep tone of his voice.
It is in the gentle words he whispers.

The strength of a man isn't how many buddies he has.
It's how good a buddy he is with his or your children.

The strength of a man isn't in how respected he is at work.
It's in how he is respected at home.

The strength of a man isn't in how hard he hits.
It's in how tender he touches.

The strength of a man isn't in the hair on his chest.
It's in his heart ... that lies within his chest.

The strength of a man isn't in how many women he's loved.
It's in how true he can be to the ONE woman he's trying to love.

The strength of a man isn't in the weight he can lift.
It's in the burdens he can carry.

The strength of a man isn't in how much food he eats from your table.

[RecipesAndMore] Re: Tip: Prevent Curly Bacon By Using Your Oven

2008-11-01 Thread Jan

I have used that technique and it works. I also use a bacon crisper when
I fry it. It also doesn't curl when I do that.

Subject: [RecipesAndMore] Tip: Prevent Curly Bacon By Using Your Oven

Prevent Curly Bacon By Using Your Oven
To keep bacon from curling you can put it the oven. Line foil on a
cookie sheet. Lay bacon slices one at a time next to each other on
sheet. Put into a 350 degree F oven and bake till done. Keep an eye on
it so you can take it out according to how you like it cooked. Soft or
crisp.
Drain the grease before you take the bacon off. Bacon usually sticks a
bit to the foil but is not hard to get off. Draining makes it easier for
clean up. Just lift the foil off and throw away. My bacon has never
curled using this method and does not take very long. Another bonus is
that there is no splattering from the frying pan. Source:

Did you hear about the cat who drank 5 bowls of water? He set a new lap
record.
