[RecipesAndMore] Re: Lima beans
I cook them like I cook my pinto beans. I soak them over night then I cook them on low in a crockpot adding spices onions and bacon, ham salt pork or fatback. This is interesting. When I was in high school all the cooking classes made pies for all 50 states. I made Jeff Davis pie which they said was for Mississippi. It was nothing like this one. I new a friend who said her grandmother had made a Jeff Davis pie she had learned to make in probably 30's or maybe earlier. This pie was more of an egg custard pie. I will write her and see if she has the recipe. I will also try to find my recipe also. Varina Davis said her husband loved sour apple pie and none of these pies have that in them. [RecipesAndMore] Re: Press Release-Sony Makes TV Compatible for the Blind.
That is very interesting. I had an RCA TV which I bought in 1990 and which sap or second audio programming on it. Also many DVD players as well as some vcr machines have sap on it. The problem with all of this is that until the United States makes it mandatory for TV stations to broadcast using the second audio program it doesn't matter what you have it will not work. I really don't look for this to happen in the near future. Not would only the broadcast stations need to change but the fcc would have to change how it alerted people in case of disasters and I feel it would happen like fore severe weather bulletins first. Press Release-Sony Makes TV Compatible for the Blind. To: Blind News [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Sony Makes TV Compatible for the Blind By JWhite Associated Content - Denver,CO,USA We are all familiar with subtitles, those little captions on TV that narrates what characters are doing and saying, but what people don't know is that a similar technology is available for the bBlind. Audio Description is like subtitles that provides additional soundtrack for blind or visually impaired people. During a break in a program's dialogue, a voice explains visual plot points that can help visually impaired people to follow and understand the plot more fully. Sony is now providing for this technology in all of their Bravia televisions. Audio description used to be only accessible through the use of a separate set-top box or a satellite receiver. However, audio description must also be supported by the broadcaster distributing the TV program. Most TV manufacturers provide support for Integrated Digital Television (IDTV) but only few provide audio description access. In Europe, a variety of programs offers audio description but it is only the United Kingdom that has a law that makes it a requirement for main broadcasters to provide for audio description. Currently, BBC channels are required to have 8% of their programs audio described. According to Sony, one of the challenges facing audio description is low awareness before visually impaired viewers can claim to enjoy the same kind of service that subtitles provide for the deaf. In 2006, an Ofcom research study said that only 22% of the visually impaired respondents who have heard of audio description claims to have used it while 63% of those least visually impaired people have never heard of it. Sony is now calling on the Television industry to join its campaign to provide products and services for the visually impaired people. With Sony's introduction of the audio description technology in its Bravia series, the company hopes to put an end to broadcasters and legislator's argument that there is limited need for channels to feature audio description because of the lack of products with the technology to play it. Sony is now on a Europe-wide PR campaign to raise awareness amongst consumers, media, legislators and manufacturers. A lot of people welcomed Sony's initiative to make blind and partially sighted people enjoy television. Andreas Ditter, Vice President of Sony's TV Operations in Europe said, With the opportunities presented by digital broadcast channels today, Sony believes that the ability to enjoy a great televisual experience should not be the preserve of those that can see, but should also be accessible to blind and partially sighted people. 2007 ? where is the button on the direct TV? - Original Message - From: Kay Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: recipesAndMore@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 7:06 AM Subject: [RecipesAndMore] Sony I am not sure what the press release is all about! Sony has had its TV's equipped with a one button access to the SAP feature where you receive the description of the DVDS programs at least since 2002. If a program is descripted, all you do is push a button on the remote and there you go! Also, on the remote distributed by Direct TV, there is also just one button to push to access a descripted program. However, Verizon, with their fiber optic TV system, does not offer the DVS feature with their programming and when I spoke to the powers that be said they have no intention of offering it in the near future. [RecipesAndMore] Re: MEASURING CUPS
I have seen some plastic measuring cups that are for blind people.. One set has a ridge around which is where you fill the liquid to, the other had a line drawn around the inside of the cup which is where you draw the liquid to. I have also heard of a measuring jar, which talks, but have never seen one. Betty Emmons - Original Message - From: steve doyle To: RecipesAndMore@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 11:24 AM Subject: [RecipesAndMore] MEASURING CUPS MEASURING CUPS NOT THE SAME There are two kinds of measuring cups -- one for liquids and the other for dry goods, such as flour and sugar. Liquid cups are made of glass or clear plastic, because to measure accurately, they should be viewed from the side at eye level. Quality liquid measuring cups should be accurately calibrated. The gold standard still is the Pyrex brand, made of sturdy glass. Measuring cups for dry ingredients are generally made of metal or plastic, and they cannot be used for liquid. They should be filled by the spoonfuls, or the ingredients should be scooped up, then leveled at the top with a straightedge. Never shake them to level because this compacts the foodstuff. But accuracy still is elusive, especially for fluffy powders such as flour, or even brown sugar. The only accurate method of measuring dry ingredients is by weighing. Most European recipes and professional cooks measure by weight. Some American recipe writers also are beginning to include weights. A kitchen scale is a good investment, not only for recipes but also to keep count of the food intake, especially if you are diabetic. lr smiles --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

[RecipesAndMore] Re: Past and present.t
I went to Hutchinson this morning and went with a Mennonite family about 5 miles on the highway. They were not in a car. They drove a stagecoach complete with horses. The man was dress in black including hat and was perched about halfway up the front of the cab. Three steps went up to where a door was then opened and long benches were where the family sat facing each other. Their was a troth in back for food for the horses. It was really interesting how the automobile and the wagons were on the same highway. The women and children were all dressed in black and also wore black hats.
