[Repeater-Builder] Re: [radio-prog@yhgrps] Delayed response to repeater

2004-11-20 Thread Eric Lemmon

Brian,

I am very familiar with this problem. There are several possible
contributing factors:

1. The users speak too soon after keying the mike.
2. The repeater may be slow in responding to incoming PL.
3. The PL frequency may be well below 100 Hz.
4. The PL deviation may be too low (not likely).
5. The radios may not be on-frequency.

Let's look at these issues one at a time.

1. In my experience, which covers Ham, commercial, and public safety,
the untrained users invariably start speaking at the same instant they
press the PTT button. This annoying habit seldom responds to pleading
or threats. It sometimes helps if other users are not afraid to rebuke
the offenders by responding with a direct instruction: I'm sorry, but
the first part of your transmission didn't make it. Please do not start
talking until a half-second or so after you press the PTT button. Try
again. The most effective solution was my imposition of MDC1200 coding
on all portable and mobile units in the fleet. I set the units for
beginning of PTT and a short sidetone beep. Once it became obvious to
all users that nothing said before the beep was heard, all users wait
for the pre-beep before speaking. It took only two weeks or so to
educate the users!

2. You didn't specify the make and model of your repeater, but some
models are simply sluggish in responding to incoming PL, and may also be
sluggish in generating the outgoing PL. Some repeaters that use reeds
are incredibly slow, but MICOR Vibrasponder and Vibrasender reeds are
fairly quick acting. Tone decoders and encoders that use PLL technology
can often be optimized by setting the idle frequency carefully so that
the lock-up time in minimized.

3. The CTCSS (PL) frequency has a great influence on decode time. The
TIA-603B standard specifies that the CTCSS decode time shall not exceed
250ms for tones above 100 Hz. Below 100 Hz, the decode times become
much slower; at 67.0 Hz, the maximum decode time is 373ms. A third of a
second is an eternity to some people. So, using higher frequency PL
tones will usually speed up the process.

4. The standard CTCSS deviation specified in TIA-603B is 500 Hz. Most
commercial radios have this parameter set in the 650-800 Hz range, and
this is fine. The majority of repeaters and portable or mobile radios I
work with are responsive to PL deviation as low as 100 Hz. Shoot for PL
deviation in the 500-700 Hz range and you'll be okay.

5. If the repeater receiver is not exactly on the same frequency as the
user transmitter, the symmetry of the demodulated signal is impaired,
and this may affect the operation of the CTCSS decoder. Since the
HT1000, HT1250, and CDM1250 radios are very good performers, I'd check
to see that the repeater was set correctly on frequency.

us miss the first part of the message. We are using a UHF repeater with
PL. The Minitor pagers and scanner hear everything fine, so I'm thinking
it has to do with the PL.

 Any thoughts?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] radial tire static?

2004-11-20 Thread Daron J. Wilson

Well...sorta. The feed line in question is referred to as 'air
dielectric', as such instead of a foam or polyethylene dielectric to
keep the center conductor centered where it is and provide insulation
between the center conductor and ground, there is a spiral piece of
dielectric material to hold the center conductor in place. Everything
else between the center conductor and the shield is the 'air' part. It
doesn't need to be nitrogen, there is nothing particularly mystical
about nitrogen, often compressed dehumidified air is used instead, since
regular 'air' is made up of about 78% nitrogen.

Will the system function without nitrogen? Absolutely. The purpose of
the air or nitrogen is to keep moisture from infiltrating the system. I
have never seen the VSWR change at all by simply removing the nitrogen
from the system. I've often opened the top of the antenna and 'purged'
the moist air out of the system with nitrogen prior to sealing it all
back up (after a leak or O ring change) and making sure it will hold.

One local broadcast station is notorius for running out of nitrogen on
the hill and letting it go for months on end. When they finally decide
it is time, I put a new tank on, crank it up, climb the tower and open
the valve on the top to push all the old 'air' out with the new clean
nitrogen. Again, no change in VSWR unless the system leaked enough to
take on moisture. When that happens you can see some VSWR, and often
you get arcing inside the feedline (not good).

Good Luck!

I will answer that , your antenna cable is using that stuff intead of
foam
like the RG series coaxes run, and as long as everything is a tight
fitting
you have very good LOW SWR, thing is ...when it leaks a o ring seal
the VSWR
 shoots up !

Alot of this I am learning in Broadcasting since they use power in the

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Mobile duplexer tuning (some theory offered)

2004-11-20 Thread Laryn Lohman

Kevin thank you for the fine explanation. Digging deeper into my
junque box, I have come up with a Phelps-Dodge duplexer which was on a
low power in-house repeater on 464 mc. This one is designed for TX
low/RX high, and is the one that will be used for this project. I am
tuning and evaluating it now. In the name of education, I will be
comparing these two units as measured on the bench and noting the
differences between them for future reference.

Thanks again

Tuning a TFE6030 duplexer. I am aware that the high/low arrangement
of frequencies should normally remain the same. However this unit has
three cavities (helicals?) on what was the TX (higher I believe) side,
and only one cavity on the RX (lower) side. For the ham band the TX
will be the lower frequency. What is the recommendation in this case?

Not to use it on a repeater where the transmitter is the lower
frequency. Why? Read your question below first, then read on.

Also, those three cavities have an additional adjustment on the
coax end of each. What is this for?

To notch out transmitter side-band noise. (undesired energy in which
appears directly on the receiver frequency)

You see, it generally much more important (or more of a requirement) to
eliminate transmitter side-band noise *on* the receiver frequency than
it is to eliminate transmitter carrier power from getting into the
receiver. This is the reason why there are more sections of filtering
on the transmitter side of this duplexer.

Let's go into some math and theory. While this text represents a 2
meter duplexer scenario, the basic theory is the same for any band.

A duplexer must attenuate the transmitter carrier, this prevents
receiver overloading, which in turn would reduce receiver
sensitivity. A
duplexer must also attenuate any noise or spurious energy from the
transmitter on or near the receive frequency. In addition, a duplexer
must provide a proper match between transmitter, antenna and receiver.
If you are having trouble visualizing these functions, take a look at
 this link:
 http://www.repeater-builder.com/pix/dupfig13.jpg

Transmitter output on 146.94 MHz going from point C to D should not be
attenuated. However, the transmitter energy should be greatly
attenuated between points B and A. Duplexer section 2 should attenuate
any noise or signals that are on or near the receiver input
frequency of
146.34 MHz. For good reception, the noise and spurious signal level
must be less than -130 dB (0 dBm = 1 milliwatt into 50 ohms). Typical
transmitter noise 600 kHz from the carrier frequency is 80 dB below the
transmitter power output. For 60 watts of output (+48 dBm), the noise
is -32 dBm. The duplexer must make up the difference between - 32 and
 -130 dBm, or -98 dBm.

Now, let's talk about the received signal. First of all, the received
signal must go from point B to A with a minimum of attenuation. Section
1 of the duplexer needs to provide enough attenuation of transmitted
energy to prevent receiver overload. For an average receiver, the
transmitter signal must be less than -30 dBm to meet this requirement.
It is the job of duplexer section 1 to make up the difference between
the transmitter output of + 48 dBm and the receiver overload point of
-30 dBm, or a reduction of about 78 dB.

A typical duplexer, that has the same construction for both sides, will
generally give several dB of receiver overload headroom, but may *just
make* or *not even make* the transmitter side-band requirement for no
 desense.

My recommendation is not to use this Motorola TFE6030 duplexer in a
situation where the transmitter is on the side having only one cavity
because insufficient transmitter side-band noise reduction will result
and your system will have unresolvable desense. It will, however, work
fine on a repeater (or full duplex link) that transmits high and
 receives low.

 Hope this helps...
 Kevin Custer

Reminds me of a story told by a broadcast engineer friend of mine...
A co-tenant of a site that he took care of regularly cooked several
hundred feet of Heliax by neglecting to keep the line pressurized.
Seems the station management knew no better--simply accepted the
purchase of new line every few years as a necessary expense.

I believe you'll find the following interesting:

 Gay-Lussac and Avogadro's Law

 * At a given temperature, the number of moles of a gas is directly
 proportional to its volume.
 * The molar volume of a gas, regardless of its identity, is constant
 * n/V = constant (at constant T and P)

If one has a gas mixture, the partial pressure of each gas is
 proportional
 to its number of moles.

The total pressure of the mixture is a simple sum of the partial
 pressures.

That is to say simply, there isn't enough difference in air and pure
nitrogen to see ANY difference in the expansion and contraction.

What you do see is a difference in the density of nitrogen and oxygen.
Nitrogen, being more dense, migrates less through other materials. And,
nitrogen doesn't cause oxidation of other materials which can eventually
lead to failure, but not likely in a common automobile tire.

Dry nitrogen is used in large aircraft tires all the time primarily
 because
of the much higher pressures involved and the fact that it will not
 migrate
through the tire material. It also will not support the oxidation of the
tire or wheel. For automotive applications, I can't see where it would
 make
a bit of difference to anyone except those SELLING THE IDEA that it will!
That is unless you're too lazy to check your tire pressures and are
 willing
to pay someone else large sums of money to take care of that minute task
 for you.

Of course this really isn't a tire static issue ;)

[Repeater-Builder] Jumper help!

2004-11-20 Thread tgundo2003

I am finishing up my uhf repeater buildup, and I made up some 1/4
superflex jumpers from the radio (Converted mitrek) to the duplexer
to replace the crummy ones I am using now (One is a RG-8, the other
an RG-8M,lots of adapters and everything, yuk!). The connectors on
the radios are so-239, and the duplexer has n, so I soldered on a pl-
259 to the 1/4 as shown on the repeater builder site.

When I installed the new jumpers the power out went to s#$, but its
fine using the crummy jumpers. I checked the new jumpers they are
good, not shorted, and measure 50 ohms into a dummy load.

What am I missing here?

Thanks!

[Repeater-Builder] GE-Moto (relay question)

2004-11-20 Thread Paul Kelley

Kevin,

That is one awesome repeater! Nice mix of GE and Motorola
stuff. I sort of have the reverse situation with GE
receiver / exciter and Moto PA.

I have questions concerning the PA selection relays. I
assume you have relays at the PA outputs as well as the
inputs? What type of relays are you using and do you have
some means of preventing them from hot switching while RF
power is applied? And if not, what happens in the event of
a power failure while the machine is in use? I mean do the
relays handle it OK?

The PA has been off my VHF repeater for some time due to a
relay problem. I need to get it back up there as we took a
major coverage hit when it failed. I want to run the tube
PA when AC power is on, but need to default to running just
the repeater / exciter (20 watts) when on battery backup. I
used coaxial relays to handle the switching but the relay
on the output of the PA self destructed (I'm guessing as a
result of not being able to handle hot switching, though I
have no proof that is what led to failure).

I am currently trying to come up with some plan as to how to
proceed with this situation... Maybe I just need better
relays? PA output is about 200 watts.

BTW folks, I've had several unexpected things thrown at me
lately. As a result I have been delayed on my coaxial
collinear project and photos, darn it! I will get back to
it ASAP! I expect it to be soon.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Jumper help!

2004-11-20 Thread Joe

Did you measure the 50 ohms with a multimeter? If you
did, try putting power to the cables with a radio and
measure the reflected power of the jumper by itself.
Sometimes a DC 50 ohms does not equal an RF 50 ohms.

The other possiblilty might be that the RG8 was the
exact lengths to make it work properly. RG8 has a
velocity factor of about 66% and hardline is typically
around 88% velocity factor. The hardline jumpers
would have to be longer than the RG8 jumpers to equal
the same RF electrical length. For example, a 40 inch
RG8 jumper would be 53 inches using the above velocity
factors.

My bet is on the soldered connectors on the hardline.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] GE-Moto (antenna relay question)

2004-11-20 Thread Kevin Custer

Paul Kelley wrote:

Kevin,

I have questions concerning the PA selection relays. I
assume you have relays at the PA outputs as well as the
inputs?

Correct. The Micor Mobile antenna relay is used backwards, as the
exciter input goes to the PL connector. The connection marked R or
receive is of course normally closed. This connection goes to the input
of the 110 watt PA, the other port (T) is going to the input of the 10
watt PA. At the other end exists the factory GE antenna relay that
originally connected the antenna to the receiver or amplifier output
(this amplifier was used in Basestation service before and had the relay
already in place). The output of the 110 watt PA goes the the normally
closed port of the output relay (the one that originally fed the
receiver). The output relay only engages when the GE tube PA is driven
(with RF and PTT) and of course is the PA that is selected.

What type of relays are you using

A Micor Mobile antenna relay for the input power (400 mW), and the OEM
GE antenna relay used with the high power station (part number unknown,
but it looks and is similar in size to a Dow Key Relay) for the hot
side of the RF.

and do you have some means of preventing them from hot switching while RF
 power is applied?

Sort of. By virtue of the way the output relay is driven, drive is
actually removed from the tube PA before the output antenna relay
switches. While drive and power already exists from the 110 watt PA, I
felt this was the lesser of the two evils.

And if not, what happens in the event of a power failure while the machine is
 in use?

Since these relays are driven from a 110 volt derived source, they
simply drop out and the 110 watt PA takes over. It switches in a matter
of milliseconds and the user might only tell by his S meter.

I mean do the relays handle it OK?

They seem to. In normal practice, the antenna relays are actually
switched prior to the channel element being enabled. This function was
incorporated into the Station Control Module by using the delays already
built into that module. While I'm not suggesting the way I do it is the
best, and while I don't make it a practice of hot switching the PA's, it
does work and hasn't given any trouble, yet; however it's only been on
the air a short time.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] GE-Moto (relay question)

2004-11-20 Thread Steve Grantham

How about running the exciter PTT or A+ through timed relay contacts that
will open on a power failure, and then close again after sufficient time for
a cold switch to be made has elapsed? The brief interruption of signal
should be of little consequence to voice users, and might also serve to
notify nearby users that a switch had been made.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Where to buy DB 224e

2004-11-20 Thread russ

They also do have the DB-224e in stock I bought one from them last week. I
got the price from Dean in the Glassboro NJ office.
We installed it this morning and it is working very well on our 147.315
repeater in Chester PA. It is nice that some one still stocks good antennas
in the Ham bands and at a fair price. They also have flat rate shipping so
they keep the truck shipping down as well.

Do a google search for a PDF printer driver, there are many free ones to use. Throw all of your gifs and jpegs into Word and create you document. Then, after installing a pdf printer program, you select the pdf printer as your default printer and "print" your word doc. A box will come up that lets you name the file and then it makes it a pdf. Easy as that, I use it at work all the time. You can make pdf's out of any program that prints.

and produce a single PDF file?

The current situation is 27 individual page scans
from a Motorola manual that needs to go into
one PDF file - but there will be more in the future.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Question for the list...

2004-11-20 Thread Richard

Another way is to use Windows picture and fax viewer (available in XP),
select all of the JPGs for printing, then send 'em to the pdf driver. That's
what I use.

Do a google search for a PDF printer driver, there are many free ones to
use. Throw all of your gifs and jpegs into Word and create you document. Then,
after installing a pdf printer program, you select the pdf printer as your
default printer and "print" your word doc. A box will come up that lets you
name the file and then it makes it a pdf. Easy as that, I use it at work all
the time. You can make pdf's out of any program that prints.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Question for the list...

2004-11-20 Thread Micheal Salem

Mike:

It may be more expensive or trouble than you are looking
for, but Paperport Pro 9.0 will allow you to scan
directly to PDF. You can scan individual pages and
Paperport allows you to drop them onto each other
to stack them into a multipage document.

I use Paperport 9.0 and it is an extremely useful
program. After you have scanned, you can edit the
document in the pageviewer mode by erasing or drawing
lines or adding annotations.

With grayscale or color, there is a tool that allows you
to lighten or darken the page. It works fairly well.
Some color scans of magazine articles will show the
rumples and folds in the paper and this is a way to
take them out.

I have a Fujitsu FI-4120-C which is a duplex scanner
that will do 25 pages per minute at 200 dpi. I can
scan multiple pages into Paperport, then stack them
or separate them as necessary.

You can also convert to other formats, or you can
import other formats to it. It also has a native
format .MAX files which was proprietary to Scansoft.
I can simply print these to PDF in Paperport 9.0.
It has both color and monochrome drivers.

I hope this is helpful.

There are other third party PDF creators. Google around and you'll find

I've had that one for over a year... it's good and best of all, free.

I was hoping that there would be a drag-and-drop solution...

I'll try the idea of sucking them into Word and printing with it. I've got
Office 2K and 256mb and PDFCreator.

H All the more reason to upgrade (?) from Win98.
Was holding off until I had a P4 chip at a gig or more ...
right now the main box is a P3-500...

How do you select which sequence to make them print?
maybe rename them and let the natural sort sequence handle it?

Any other comments?
