Re: [Repeater-Builder] Micor repeater power supply

2005-04-25 Thread Maire Company

there is a power supply that Motorola made for the Micor that will charge
the battery (12V) and them run the repeater when needed.

The last I knew a new one from Motorola was about $400. as I got one for a
job and still in stock. Also they may be got at a ham fest as I got a Micor
(working) with the power supply for $600.00 at one time.

If you can't find one let me know and I will see how many I have.

Has anyone come up with a way to power the micor repeater with 12 volts?
Would like to have a point in the power supply to hook 12 volts to for
 battery backup.

You will have a hard time beating a Micor receiver, however, I can
tell you that the Motorola Quantar makes an outstanding ham repeater.
Used ones are becoming affordable but give consideration to the

 expensive.

The IF and demodulation is all done in DSP in the Quantar. The
squelch action is even better than the Micor chip. Interfacing is a
snap - assuming you have the wireline board which hosts the wildcard +
 EM I/O.

I 'd like to find a unit with about 6-9dB gain, possibly

Re: [Repeater-Builder] DB-420B Side Mounting

2005-04-09 Thread Maire Company

for many years (12) I had a 420 on the top on a 78 foot tower in Florida
the tower had 3 sets of guys cables on it.. it made it thought all the
storms we for here but no ice as Florida has none. Just lots of wind. The
worst all the lighting the tower had hit it in all the years it was up. But
the 420 made it thought it all, is now on a tower up north and still
working.

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] DB-420B Side Mounting

 Hi, all.

I have a Rohn 45G tower and a Rohn's Universal Sidearm Mount presently
configured with several antennas. I want to rearrange the antennas and
mount the DB-420 for my repeater using the Rohn universal sidearm mount.

I want to use the universal sidearm to bottom and mid-mount the DB420
(the heavy, bottom half of the antenna)near the top of the tower to gain
additional at the expense of a lower wind rating. The alternative is to
bottom and top side mount the DB420 using the universal sidearm, but
lower on the tower. The height difference either way is less than 10'
but the tower is under 80' tall so the 10' can make a difference.

I am in a 70 mph county in North Texas where we get severe weather each
Spring. My question: Would the DB-420 be secure enough bottom and
mid-mounted on the sidearm for additional height? Or is it better to
bottom and top mount the DB420 with lower height but greater wind rating?

 Suggestions?

 Thanks

 Stewart

Building is a state of mind! Even if it
means you use blocks to put it together. For an educated person as you
so blatantly flaunt after your name you seem to have forgotten the basics of
the English language. Let me refresh you with English 101. As stated in
  the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:Webster Dictionarynaryam-Webster DictionaryMain Entry:
  1build Pronunciation: 'bildFunction:

  /'bilt/; build·ingEtymology: Middle English bilden,

makes him an "ass"? We put repeaters together

Kenwood, Johnson, Midland and Motorola build

We just rack them up program and test them

No we do not. So he is an "ASS"? Do you build

[Repeater-Builder] cable run radiating cable

2005-03-15 Thread Maire Company

what do you guys know about the installation
of radiating cable for a repeater in a building. I have a 5 story building
and sub basement. So it is like 6 stories. Thinking of putting the
repeater in the lower level and installing the cable up to the
roof.On the roof thinking a DB-408. (or would a dummy
load be used) This would be a UHF repeater possible 2 watts or other
low power use. The goal is to cover the floors as there are a lot of
cement and metal. At this time they have a repeater on the roof but the
lower floors are dead and there is very little receive in the sub
basement. The current repeater is 40 watts. No preamp.

Or any other thoughts would
help.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Micor Repeater is PART 95 Type Accepted

2005-03-05 Thread Maire Company

well if the unit can not be used as a repeater or it can that should be a
part of repeaters also.

we got a number of Micors still in operation (6) , and as long as we have
them out there working this would be a good think to know. We have been
changing them to Kenwood TKR-840 but still have more to go. Any one need
any Micor repeaters UHF or parts let me know.
thanks for the info.

This is a repeater builder forum NOT FCC land!

Same thing goes for Coordination crap, take it

Everyone has an opinion about coordinators, who

This has nothing to do with Repeater-Builders.

We just checked the FCC list and it is not there
we call the FCC and they
do not know any thing about this. We where told
today that it is not true.
These older radio's are NOT FCC type certified for
 use today on GMRS under

I suspect that many of the participants here have had experience
selecting UHF repeaters for high-RF applications such as at
broadcasting sites. Which would you buy and why? Yaesu/Vertex,
ICOM, Kenwood, or some Motorola type? At present I am using a pair
of Moto GM300s with a RICK controller.

Thanks for the input. It is 150MHz and we would have a 5Mhz split.
What is the best process for shielding the two radios? Are there
cases out there or some foil type products? What would happen if we
just connected to the two radios together and separated the antennas?

I looked at the R1225 and it is a little big but may work if need
be. Would a Motorola PAC RT work?

 Denny,

The HT1000 is an excellent radio by itself, but its plastic case
 offers
no shielding whatsoever. It is possible to construct a compact low
power repeater with the HT1000 (or any two commercial quality
 portable
radios) if each radio is enclosed in a tightly-shielded box, with
 all
audio and control leads brought out through coaxial filter
 capacitor
terminals. The antenna lead would need to be brought out through a
 separate bulkhead connector.

Once you have a completely shielded transmitter and a completely
shielded receiver, connect them to a compact (mobile) duplexer with
double-shielded cable such as RG-400/U. You will need a
 rudimentary
controller to handle the simple repeater functions. I am assuming
 that
the pair you intend to use in the 150 MHz VHF band has a 5 MHz
 split; if
it is less, a mobile duplexer won't work.

It would be a lot easier to use a 10 watt Motorola R1225 repeater
transceiver, instead of two separate radios.

 Ham radio items for sale;

My father passed away about a year ago, he left me quite a collection
 of electronic gear and radios.
I never really had too much of an interest in the radio or
electronics thing like my father did, so I never was licenced and now
I really have no use for the items. On top of things, the company
that I work for is promoting me but I have to re-locate. Rather than
haul this equipment across the country, stuff I dont use anyways,
I've decided to sell it to lighten the load. I had a yard sale, sold
a pile of the little items like mobile and hand held radios, tuners
antennas - even the tower sold. Some of the people that came by told
me to post the stuff on E-Bay, others mentioned yahoo groups and
others mentioned newsgroups. Since E-Bay charges an arm and a leg,
and I need to get this stuff out of here ASAP, I'll try the groups.

To make this stuff go quick because I don't have much time to mess
around with it, I've priced the stuff cheap to make a quick sale.
Also, I'm prefering to use Paypal rather than Money orders, just
 because of the time issue.

As an added bonus, All items SHIP FREE with insurance and a tracking
number. You pay just the amount of the item(s) you want.

So with that said, here is the list of items.

For as much as ICM charges for crystals these days, you should have no
problem getting a replacement from them at no charge.

I ordered 7 crystals from Bomar in December on the phone. When I
received the order they had gotten a repeater pair reversed IE the
pair was for a link radio on a repeater, what I actually got was the
crystals for the repeater frequency, the Tx and Rx frequencies were
reversed. When I called they said that I had made the mistake and
that they would be glad to make the crystals that I needed for 10
bucks each. SAY WHAT? SO BOMAR is on my nasty list. Great customer

 Best thing to try :

Get the MoSlo program here... http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/
Use it at the default speed (IBM PC/AT 4Mhz). This should allow the
R100.com program to run on most any system. If it still won't run,
DISABLE CACHE in your CMOS setup and try again.

Also, if you're dealing with a 450 split R100, you will probably have
to hex edit the R100.com file to modify the allowable bandsplit.
Directions to do so are here... http://www.batlabs.com/r100.html

 Good luck hope this helps.

Your computer may be way too fast, the R100 s/w is OLD, and does not
run correctly on any faster than a old 286 10mhz with DOS 5xx or 6.0.

You could also have a bad EEProm, or bad data in it, common problems.

the last I read it is a FCC no no. you can not mix part 90 and 95 freg.
and if you do VHF and UHF part 90 there is a section in the part 90 that
give you the power and how to mix the two. also both freg also need to have

Re: [Repeater-Builder] VX2000U repeater

2005-01-04 Thread Maire Company

Kenwood and Primus both make set up's for what you are asking but like I
said you and him both need to be on part 90 channels and both on the same
call sign set up as a system. I have done this in the past the other
problem is if the main channel is UHF then the VHF repeater can only be low
power. look in part 90 under mobile repeater. we have set them up a number
of times they work good if you get high end equipment. Right now in my
truck I have a set up from Kenwood tk-780 and tk880 works good but not low
cost.

The radio will not be 1. used on ham frequencies, it is GMRS and the the
scanner would be used to pickup up a business band radio that is a friend
 of
the families on a VHF frequency I am licensed with FCC for GMRS and he is
licensed. we work together and help each other out a lot. it would just be
nice to hear him without having to put another radio in the pickup or put
 a
scanner in there. i thought if i would hook the scanner to the radio at
 the
base I would be able to listen to it. so i guess it IS POSSIBLE if peple
 are
getting in trouble for broadcasting public safety

You cannot rebroadcast Public Saftey on Ham freqs. I'll give you a
classic
example in Michigan when I was at a meeting...

Woman unknown was rebroadcasting police locations where the RADAR speed
traps on 11 Meters CB CH. 19 needless to say Sheriff got ahold of this
and
arrested her and she was in Jail, everything consfiscated.

doesn't matter whats being heard John Q. Public finds that you
retransmitted
a traffic Stop for a burned out light bulb or a speeding ticket, he will
be
after you, and the court can fine you or have you making Martha Stewarts
Designer Plates to hang on cars.

I have the SMP-4000 and the add on EPROM box, but am missing the ribbon

Can anybody help me with either instructions to construct a replacement

No, each user can operate under the main license if set

Can I do the research and find a frequency pair

Coordination is probably required. You can suggest a

I think the point was mistaken here. I either have to change the
 connector
on the receiver so that the cable goes directly to the receiver without
using any connetors to change from one type of plug to another, or find a
special cable with an RCA on one end and a Type N Male on the other. My
objective is to never visit the repeater site once this machine is done.
And if I have to, I don't want it to be becuase I used a cheap connector
 to
tie in the reciever. The receiver is the GE MASTR ER41. I'd rather just
change the connector to a type N connector, but would have to widdle a
little on the internal copper casing to put it in place. Question: If I
install the type N connector, and there is a solder point behind the
 inside,
am I going to run into troubles. I hate to cut into it to find that I'm
opening a can or worms for noise to get in?

 Mathew

I'm not entirely tongue in cheek when I ask whether you should be in
charge of a repeater or installing one if you have not got the expertise
 to
cut a bit of coax and fit a plug or socket. And if the spare 20 minutes
 is
to much for some then that would explain the funny noises I often hear
 on
 two meters whilst traveling around.

I just recently picked up a VHF 125-Watt MSF-5000 base station at a local
government auction, the model number is C73CXB-7106B. From some of the
research I've done on the internet, I understand that this is a base
station, 125 watts, and the PA deck model number corresponds to a 146-174
 MHz split.

Has anyone on these groups put one of these MSF-5000s on 2-Meters (144-148
MHz)? I have several MICOR, MASTR II and MSR-2000 base stations and
repeaters in service on 10M, 6M, 2M and UHF, but this the first time I've
ever looked at putting an MSF-5000 into ham radio service.

Can this radio be programmed to be a Repeater instead of a Base Station?
One of the techs in our radio shop said that there is a choice in RSS to
select whether the station is to be a Base Station or a Repeater. If so,
 is
it just a matter of setting the necessary parameters in RSS and bringing
out the transmitter (PA deck) and receiver antenna leads to separate RF
 connectors?

If it will go to 2-Meters, can it be programmed for any frequency within
 the 144-148 MHz band?

Does this unit require a PROM to be programmed, or is it all done with
 RSS?
We have a lot of 800-MHz repeaters at work, and we do have the latest RSS,
programming cables, RIBs, etc. I spend much of every day working with RSS
for Spectras, MTS-2000, and lots of other Motorola radios, and now those
that use CPS, like the XTS, XTL, etc. series radios. So I feel comfortable
using RSS, and have a shop full of people that use it on MSF-5000s
regularly. We just don't use them on VHF, only 800-MHz.

Thanks in advance for any advice on using this station. I haven't fired it
up to make sure that it works, I've been planning to use RSS (if that's
what programs this particular station) to see how it's currently setup.

Here is the situation with the repeater I maintain that runs 300W on TX.
Repeater antennas are at 1300 ft feed through 3/4 in 75 ohm line. The
majority of the user base is 40 to 60 miles from the site. We have a
 remote
input about 60 miles from the repeater to provide HT and mobile coverage
for where the majority of the users are. With all the feedline loss and
 the
distance from the users, we need the 300W Tx power to provide good
 coverage
 where the users are.

The repeater is also the primary skywarn repeater with wide area coverage
 of
the state and users need to be able to hear the repeater well in adverse
 weather conditions.

With 300W, I can hear the repeater from my house which is 50 miles from
 the
repeater and I can get into it on the HT with the rubber duck using 200 mw
through the remote receiver. With the repeater running 100W for TX, I can
get into the repeater using the HT but can't hear it on the rubber duck.

I can only wonder why the need for what seems to me is excessive power?

Most folks will agree that a repeater that is working properly (no
desense) having a receiver sensitivity of .35 uV (- 116 dBm) for 12 dB
SINAD, and a transmitter power of 110 watts will likely be fairly well
matched in receive/transmit coverage considering a modern 50 watt mobile
 rig.

Now, lets add a receiver preamp on the repeater and increase its
sensitivity by say 6 dB to -122 dBm. Considering the repeater still
operates properly, without desense, this same repeater would now require
480 watts of transmitter power to be matched as above.

That being said, 200 + watts of transmitter power doesn't seem to be
excessive to me, but it depends on what is there to hear the user.

Plug a PCMCIA serial port card into the laptop...

These guys occasionally have them used, and when they do

But there is no warranty and no return.
I use these guys all the time for SCSI cables.

Fw: [Repeater-Builder] Direct TV type dish?

2004-10-24 Thread Maire Company

Tom,

going to look at sat. A and sat. B with 2 dish's is there a way to

Subject: Re: [Repeater-Builder] Direct TV type dish?

I work for a high-end Custom home electronics company and deal with directv
all of the time. Heres a few bits you may or may not find intresting.

1. Rain fade. Want to limit this? Put up three 1 meter dishes to look at
the birds and have better signal reception. Yes, its an eyesore, but you hardly
ever get rain fade!. The dishes are getting smaller and looking at three
different positions in the sky, so they give up gain with the dish itself to
look at all of these at the same time. They get away with this because the birds
themselves are relativly high power. You can use up to a 1 meter dish to look at
any one position in the sky and get much better signal, but not any bigger
because again, the dish is too focused, At the 101 degree position there are
actually three satellites which if I remember right are about 50 miles apart
from each other in orbit, but at 24000 miles away thats virtually a single point
in the sky from here. However, a dish bigger than 1 meter can single out one of
the satellites. For you who have directv and have looked at your signal meter,
with a 1 meter dish setup almost all of the transp! onders will read 100 all of
the time with clear skys or even light clouds, and you hear toto flying by when
rain fade actually knocks the signal out all together.

2. For long runs or commercial installs the standard is RG-11 coax to
maintain signal level. There are amplifiers used for this as well. Stacker
systems are becoming more common in MDU and high rise buildings. Basically,
conventional satellite systems work 900 to 1500 as noted in a previously. The
issue is that the reciever has to send a signal to the dish to switch between
the a and b lnbs to look at the different birds, they cant both come down the
line at the same time because they are both oviously coming down at the same
frequency. You cannot just "split" the signal to multiple recievers because they
would battle for control over the dish as channels are changed. Because of that
distribution of that to dozens of recievers in a large building starts to get
complicated because of the voltage switches needed to facilitate the
switching. The Stacker system sends the second dish feed down at 1500- 2 gig, so
that all of the signals are on the line at the same time,! a on 900-1500, b on
1500 - 2000. Many of the recievers out there already have tuners built in that
can accept the wideband input, just a simple trip into the service menu on the
box and turn it on! Now we can amplify and split as needed to feed as many as
you want! But RG-11 and 2 gig rated splitters and amps are a must.

Thats my two cents on the matter.

warrants lightning protection, you should also consult NFPA 780, the

The NEC covers grounding for safety of personnel, structures, and

i am in need of an aluminum outdoor enclosure that is weatherproof.

something large enough to hold a quantar 2m machine duplexers and a UHF
 MSF 5000.

my only requirement is that the unit be pretty much sealed (except for a
pressure vent) to prevent water entry into the cabinet.

i would prefer aluminum due to weight considerations... and something
within 300-400 miles of jacksonville, florida so i can come and pick it
up.

if anyone has any ideas, please let me know i know this stuff is
available new... but at about $2000++ that's a little out of the budget.

 Kenwood's low-tier commercial repeaters TKR-750 (VHF) and TKR-850 (UHF)
are fairly reliable and are relatively inexpensive. Both of them
operate on 13.8 VDC. Go here for more info:

Another option is buy Motorola R1225 transceivers (not the packaged
GR1225 version) and mount them in your own carrying case. The R1225 is
available in VHF and UHF, in 10W and 45/50W versions.

have more than a problem with Kenwood…it's either your dealer or the way the
situation was handled. I was a Kenwood dealer for over 20 years (retired
last year), and Kenwood was always responsive to our needs. I've had
"LEMONS" from every manufacturer including Kenwood and never had a problem
with them replacing the unit…no matter what it was…if I said I wanted it
exchanged..they exchanged it. There has been a lot of talk of buying
from Kenwood Dealers that don't service their equipment but send it in to the
Depot. Personally I would never deal with a company that didn't have the
technical expertise to maintain and repair the equipment they sold. We
always repaired all the equipment we sold "IN HOUSE", except for DOA's which
we promptly got an exchange for the unit or a credit to our
  account.

  So all of that said…I
really don't think Kenwood was the problem….it was whoever was in-between and
apparently whomever you purchased the unit from apparently is one of these
companies that doesn't "SERVICE WHAT THEY SELL".

  If they can't service
it, then they shouldn't sell it…..end of story.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Kenwood Repeaters

2004-09-10 Thread Maire Company

Well as a Kenwood when I got my contract with them it gave the area I can
sell in. If I am selling out of my area they can STOP selling to me. I
have seen that happen to people in the past. Also to sell Kenwood products
there is a bout a 32 page contract I had to fill out. They make a very good
product and happy to sell it. I have in the past seen a number of dealers
of equipment removed from selling it just because given 30 days notice and
you are out. Even companies like JBL, Shure, Medeco, CK, are also some
that do that. Also Kenwood can require you to go through the local dealer
for repair even to send in the unit and to get a RMA #, if the local does
not want to work with you then where are you? It may get repaired but sit
on his shelf for weeks before he sends it in. There is a little discount
you get for volume but if you buy from you local dealer it may help him get
it so he can pass it on to you, ever think of that?

thanks for my .02

dealer for Kenwood, Vertex, Maxon, Midland, EF Johnson and soon Icom
(all in Florida and some in East TN also)

WRONG WRONG WRONG. The ONLY legit way to buy *new* Kenwood LMR
equipment is through one of the dealers listed on the website. They can
direct you to a more local dealer if you wish (what you get is a
regional dealer), but Kenwood has a policy in place that it's dealers
are NOT allowed to sell outside of their assigned area, and NOT direct
sales on the internet, to protect their dealers. It is also important to
work face-to-face with the staff. Support your local businesses! They
are the backbone of the industry!

Under Federal LAW. I as a person or business can purchase anything from
anybody that has stock, regardless of where they are.

Kenwood knows this and does not push the issue.

If I do not want to purchase from a local dealer (for any reason,
including
no reason) I can. Kenwood may not like it, but that is the LAW. They
(Kenwood) can not make me purchase from a local dealer, and they must
honor
the warranty. The local dealer to me can refuse to honor the warranty, but
 not Kenwood.

 Hi,

I generally keep quiet, and you will probably never hear me say
something bad about a product again, but here goes.

If I were you, I would avoid TE Systems like the black plague.

Their customer service is truly the pits. God forbid you need to get
your amplifier serviced, you may never see it again.

You can email me if you want more details.

I have heard good things about Crescend and TPL amplifiers. But I have
never used either. Somebody like Jeff DePolo could give you good advice,
I
 think.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks Eric. License I Know is required. Issue that is at hand, I
think you answered, is type of equipment allowed. I have read issues
where guys are building them out of GE and Micor units, and that is what I
want to know if this is allowed, or must it be certain types of
equipment. Antenna and cable is already there, 7/8" Andrews and DB 8 Bay
antenna, duplexer is something I will purchase after I decide on the
  repeater.

  Mathew
Before you can put a GMRS repeater on the air, you must have a
GMRSlicense. You also need to read and understand the applicable FCC
Rulesin Title 47 USC Part 95. The current edition of Part 95 is
datedOctober 1, 2003.A GMRS repeater should be FCC Type-Accepted
for Part 95 operation, butyou can use a repeater that is Type-Accepted for
Part 90. Thisrequirement rules out any repeaters built from parts. Some
repeatersthat are relatively inexpensive include the Yaesu VXR-7000, the
KenwoodTKR-850, and the Motorola GR1225 or RKR1225. The important features
tohave are a built-in ID-er and the capability to decode CTCSS or CDCSS.
You will quickly learn that a good antenna, duplexer, and feedline
costmore than the repeater.Although the Part 95 Rules limit GMRS
power to 50 watts, there are somehigh-powered "pirate" stations operated
by unlicensed individuals whoignore all of the rules. I suggest that you
not seek ! advice from suchpeople!73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY (and GMRS

a certain type, then I read where they are building them out of spare
parts, but then am told the spare parts units are not FCC approved. So
what is the truth here? What can be used as a GMRS repeater? And what
would be a low cost unit available for such use? Thanks.

 Hey gang.
OK, need some info from you old timers who are Dayton regulars.
Any good reputable booths I should visit as far as commercial stuff
 goes?
I'm thinking about link radios, commercial HTs, perhaps maybe even a
 duplexer or 2.
 Any ideas?

What is the sensitivity in microvolts? If you do not have access to a
signal generator or service monitor you will not get far on your own,
having manuals is important for the radio service tech you consult with
 on-site to evaluate this problem.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Controllers RC-210

2004-04-09 Thread Maire Company
I got a RC-210 and they were the best to work. I have done a little
testing on the unit but don't have it in full operation at this time. BUT
all the help Ken has given and understanding, I am sure he will be there to
help as needed. I had him build the controller, as I have been short on
time (and still am) but he did a great job. I may ask him to hook it up to
a repeater for me if my time is still short and I would ever trust him to do
the job and bet the repeater back to me.

I do not know Ken or business but from doing business with him and I would
say it is a great controller and get your self one.

 Tim,

Yes, you can rent a spectrum analyzer- preferably with a return-loss
bridge, or you can borrow one.

Seriously, though, the duplexer is such a critical component in a
repeater system that you really should not try to cut corners on its
tuning. Once upon a time, I personally used some creative means to
tune duplexers, before I decided to acquire the proper test equipment,
and I always was able to improve on my prior work, using the proper test
 equipment.

A spectrum analyzer with a tracking generator is the minimum essential
tool for tuning duplexers. However, not all spectrum analyzers are
accurate enough for such work, and fewer still have enough dynamic
range. Most low-end spectrum analyzers have an 80 dB dynamic range,
which is insufficient for duplexers that might have greater than 100 dB
of isolation. That's where a network analyzer really shines.

A return-loss bridge is an important accessory for a spectrum analyzer
(it's built-in to a network analyzer), since it allows you to tune for
an extremely sharp peak (actually, it's a sharp null) when tuning the
bandpass element, thus squeezing the nth degree of performance out of a
duplexer. A properly tuned duplexer should NEVER need to be tweaked at
the transmitter site. If tweaking a duplexer at the site does improve
either the reception or the power output, the chances are good that the
spectrum analyzer used to tune it is off frequency. It's also possible
that there is a significant impedance mismatch, but I don't want to beat
 that dead horse!

I prefer to use a network analyzer to tune duplexers, because I can
easily verify that the jumper cables between cavities are the correct
length. In the case of your TX-RX duplexer, you probably should give
the factory a call to confirm the cable lengths for the model and
operating frequency. Depending upon your location, it may be
cost-effective to ship the duplexer to TX-RX, or to another vendor such
as EMR, for professional conversion and tuning to your repeater pair.
If you do this, do not let anyone touch the tuning controls after its
 return!

The Bottom Line: Yes, you can tune a duplexer without any fancy
equipment- but why would you want to, if your objective is to have a
 first-class repeater?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] VOCOM (or VO-COM?) Power Amplifier Retuning

2004-01-29 Thread Maire Company
We have used Vocom amplifiers for may years (UHF) and have been very happy
with them. Get a RMA number and send the unit in. In a very short time you
with get it tuned, any repairs needed, and a cost that will not kill you.
We just got a unit not to long ago on Ebay and had them go over it and are
very happy with the job they did.
The amplifier has been install since we got it back and like the other 6
units we have work fine. We have even sent a unit back to be check and they
could find no troubles and there was only shipping cost.

I just put an MTR2000 UHF repeater in commercial service, and I know
that it will also cover the Amateur 70cm band. It's pretty pricey for
most Ham groups, even if you get a stripped model. Be aware, the 100
watt model requires 28VDC, while the 60W and lower run on 12VDC. You
can save a few hundred by deleting the built-in power supply and the
4-wire interface. However, you should consider getting the speaker,
speaker cable, special local-control microphone, programming cable, and
the RVN4148 RSS. One other thing: The MTR2000 is intended to be
repaired by exchanging modules, so the detailed service manual does
NOT contain any schematics or parts lists. Although the MTR2000 is
pretty rugged and reliable, it is not a repeater that is
  user-serviceable.

Well, if you really have the 'anatomy' to do this: Sell it on eBay, take the
money, and buy something that will work much better. (such as a used MASTR
II or Micor)

Personally, I wouldn't do that to someone else, but it is your choice.

You can best modify the spectrum by replacing the following components:
power supply, transmitter, receiver, controller. It should then
perform well if you used good replacement parts.

;) I have inherited a Spectrum Communications SCR-4000 repeater.
Receive seems to work fine but the TX freq drifts after a few
minutes no matter how many times I reset it. It has the TCXO option
in it but it doesnt seem to matter. Any Ideas on what might be causing
  this?

Spectrum has been LESS than helpful, other than to say "we
discontinued it over 10 years ago and can't help you" and "we can
sell you a manual if you want though!". Thats great. Also, does
anyone know what mods are needed to run this unit with an outboard
controller, as the Spectrum one sucks. Any and all help is GREATLY
  appreciated!

it would be not as costly if you had a

  Hey guys.
OK, this is a bit greek to me, so your info
  is appreciated.
  I have 1 sight, and 2 repeaters.
We don't have the space to put them on
  separate antennas.
  We have a station master.
Could i run 2 UHF repeaters on 1
  antenna?
I know i would need a combiner. What
type of combiner would i need?
Any info on doing this would be
  appreciated.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Vertex VXR-700

2003-12-06 Thread Maire Company
I have a number of the VXR-7000 UHF repeater on the air for community
repeaters for a number of years with NO problems. They are on towers with a
master receive and rx ant setup. We are a Vertex dealer and I can say for a
50 watt unit we have had not problems. The other repeater we have out there
are the Kenwood TKR-840 and they also have given us no trouble. The
Micor's we have seem to give us the most but when they work they work very
well. Some time next year we are going to replace they with the newer
units.

We are running a set of Wacom 639 duplexers. The repeater is set up on a
mountain top site that is heavy RF environment. There must be about 20
or 25 systems up there including 2 paging systems

Sorry, for the typo. Yes, I am referring to the VXR 7000. What kind
of duplexer did you buy for it?

I thought the club guys were overly quick to dismiss the Vertex as
a toy.

What kind of environment is your 5000 in?

Has anyone tried this model for amateur radio use?

The guys in the club seem to think it is inferior, but they never
even read the specs. I heard someone make the comment well, its
not
commercial quality. Does it have to be commercial quality for
Ham
 use?

There seemed to be concern about the sound quality? I have a few
Yaesu radios and always get good audio reports.

Can someone share their experiences pro and con?

 Thanks,

Spectrum sounds like the company I used to work for, Electronics Line,
makers
of crappy PIRs and security transmitters. When taking transmitters out of
the warehouse and checking them out, they drifted from + 1kc+ off
frequency to -
1kc+ as they warmed up. When I asked about temperature compensation, was
told
to mind my own business. Quit shortly thereafter. It's always easy to get
one
through FCC certification, then forget about the added components on the
rest. These units only worked on frequency when the temperature was 72
degrees. I
still get calls asking what to do about this crappy product and my advice
to
them is round file them and replace them with a quality brand.

Stick with a reliable and proven brand.

I received a call from the dealer that sold me the repeater. They said
that
Kenwood had ordered a recall on all TK 750 and 850 repeaters. They
redesigned the Transmitter. IT has a much larger driver transistor and
 final.

They will replace the board at no cost to you.
