think FAR cicuits also used to have the boards. It might be worth checking.

I'd like to build the NHRC-2 repeater controller, I have all the parts
except for a PC board, before I try and do my own board, is the mask to
make your own anywhere? I'd do the kit from NHRC but I already got all
the parts I need in stock vs getting the parts in the kit.I dunno if
the board is available by itself or not. If I can't find it I figure
I'd do one up from the schematics for what I need. Trying to get a
backup controller for our 146 repeater and a new controller for our 440
repeater built. Thanks for any info or assistance.

  HelloAll,

From what I have seenthe quality is the same but I have been preaching
on this board and others youcan’t install a DB antenna without sealing
every screw, bolt, plastic knot, connector and anything else that could leak
water. Besides that you musttake all connections to the harness and
tighten all screws before you seal it. Once you do that the antenna may
possibly outlive most people on thisboard. I have a DB-410 in downtown
Fort Worth that I installed in 1976 and itstill has flat SWR.

Use Scotchkoat from3M to seal the antennas but don’t get it on you, it
sticks to you as well asit does the antennas.

  YES!

Recently replaced a new DB-224 that had wicked waterin the molded
harness section and ended up inside the connector. Uponreceiving a
replacement antenna, we sealed the heck out of the harness withvapor wrap
before installation. This one seems to be holding up for now, fornow knock
on wood. The local PD did not like a water loggedantenna!

What happened to DB's quality? Upon inspection of theold one, it
seems as though the glue that was suppose to be keeping thewater out was
not only sparsely applied but was also very brittle. Anymovement of the
harness would crack the glue resulting in a potential placefor water to
enter the harness.

While doing a routine test, I noticed the ref. power was a little

We found water in the connector at the center of the antenna. It DID

The harness was carefully disassembled. Water (and corrosion) was

Has anyone seen this before? Has the quality slipped that much on

If by inverted you mean the antenna is mounted upside down then the drain holes

 Subject: VSWR Issues

 Greetings all,

My club repeater system consists of a KRP-5000
feeding (what we think is) a
DB-224 mounted on a watertower at about 140'. The
 feedline is about 170
feet of one-inch helix. We'd been getting some
 comments from users about
decreased coverage, but had attributed most of them
 to the heavy foliage
we're seeing now (we have the same issue every
 spring), but nonetheless last
night the two of us on the technical committee went
to the site to do some
checking. (As a sidebar, my background is 24 years
 USAF as an avionics tech
and my buddy works as a radio/radar tech for the
 FAA.)

At the site, a quick power check revealed the
 problem. 9 watts forward, 3
watts back (checked from both sides of the cans).
 The transmitter output
should be 30 watts. Checked the transmitter into a
 Comm Systems Analyzer
and verified 8.6 watts from the transmitter. So. we
 know that the
transmitter is toasted, no doubt from excessive
 reflected power.

The next step was to put a TDR on the line.
 Everything appeared to be okay
up to the antenna, but the termination point
 (antenna) looked pretty ragged.
What does a DB-224 (or similar) antenna look like on
 a TDR? (We tried to
print the TDR image so I could share it, but the
 printer was not
 cooperating.)

I need to add that we DO NOT have access to the
 water tower. Previous club
leadership pulled some fast ones on the county and
 we are forbidden from
climbing the tower. Whatever needs to be done, we
 must use the same crew
the county uses and pay all costs. Also, we're the
 only ones on the tower,
so there is no routine maintenance done on the tower
 that we can piggy-back
on. Bottom line. we need to figure out what we need
 to do and have
everything in place if we need to hire a crew to
come out and do the work
 for us.

If I had access to the tower, I'd terminate the top
 of the hardline with a
50 ohm load and recheck the reflected power to
 verify that the feedline is
good. I'd also check power at the top to see how
 much loss we had. (The
antenna has been up there for more years than anyone
 can remember. we
believe that the last time it was inspected was
 1994.) The hardline itself
looks very good, and we inspected the antenna as
 best we could from
ground-level with a sighting scope and could not see
 anything obviously
 mucked up.

I'm guessing that the feedline is okay but that the
 antenna is going to need
either overhauled or replaced. and since we're going
to have to pay for the
rigging crew, replacing the antenna would probably
 be the cheapest route.

Thoughts, suggestions? Did we miss anything
 obvious? Suggestions for a new
antenna that will last as long as this one did? I
 hate to go to the
membership with a 'we think this is what is wrong
 and we need to spend
money', but without access to the tower we're pretty
 much hamstrung.
Anybody got a TDR image of a DB-224 (or similar)
 that we can use for
 comparison?

 Thanks in advance,

 Mike

2007-03-27 Thread Paul Guello
You may find it works OK on 2 meters. Probably not
good enough for a repeater though. There has been
discussions here before about extending the elements
and building new harnesses. The harness is made up of
75 ohm and 35 ohm Vaporlock weather proof coax cut to
multiples of 1/4 wavelength. There was an article on
the net about this by kc4fwc, one by wb0upj, and
another by kc5dgc.  Also look at Kevin's article here;

Depends on who you ask really. The impedance of
 what most people
call a classic folded dipole is about 300 ohms.
 But measure the
various dipoles by Decibel and Sinclair you'll
 probably find they
are not all standard size dipoles.

What Decibel does to match their dipole arrays is
 nothing like the
  method used by Sinclair.

  cheers,
  skipp

4 of them, fed in-phase, will present an
 impedance of 75 ohms at
 the
feedpoint of the phasing harness, which will
 present an
 acceptable
1.5:1 SWR to a 50-ohm transmitter. As Nate
 mentioned, some
manufacturers build the phasing harness with
 different impedances
 of
coax to transform the antenna array's impedance
 to 50 ohms.

As far as frequency goes, if you're saying that
 the length of an
element, from the center of the top bend to the
 center of the
 bottom
   bend is 34 inches, it's definitely a high-band
 antenna. The
 larger
the element tubing diameter, the broader the
 frequency range the
antenna will cover, so you may get that to
 perform acceptably at
 2
meters. See the construction article on the
 Repeater Builder
 website
   at
 www.repeater-builder.com/projects/exposeddipole.html
 - it's
pretty much the antenna you have.

I built one completely within the exec II box using a

connected as a UHF link back to the big repeater. I
have most of the info and when I get it all together

First check the VSWR. (it may be going up when you
add the second set of elements, the harness must be
done correctly for the VSWR to stay low)

If the VSWR is OK or things are corrected so it seems
OK then retune the duplexer using a Spectrum Analyzer
and Return Loss Bridge. Do this with the antenna
connected so the duplexer is matched to the antenna
system.

2006-05-07 Thread Paul Guello
A licensed amateur radio operator would know that what
you are proposing is illegal.
Also, the chief engineer of the radio station should
be doing the engineering, not you.
Remote broadcast regulations are covered by part 74 of
the FCC rules are very clear. A license is required
and it is not allowed in the ham bands.
If you are serious about doing remote broadcasts you
will look at Marti radio equipment, Telos ISDN
equipment or Tieline POTS codecs. These are just a
few examples.
It's also interesting that you are not willing to put

 tower up at 250-270 ft.
for many years (a 6dB Stationmaster for 145 MHz
 and a 6dB Stationmaster
for 224 MHz). Our 2 meter antenna is now a dB224,
 with the dipoles
situated around the antenna mast as if for a top
 of the tower mount
with an omni pattern. The 220 antena is an anemic
 3 dB gain Antenx,
which is not much better than a wet noodle with
 some gain.

I seem to remember somewhere (maybe an old dB
 Products catalog) where
for an antenna of the dB224, if you face all four
 dipoles toward the
tower, you stand a chance of getting s more omni
 pattern (at least it
is suppose to have somewhat equal gain ripple
 around the tower). The
tower is 25 ft. wide on each face. The antenna
 will be offset from one
leg around 5 to 6 feet at least.

Does anyone have any experience in mounting this
 type of antenna in
  this manner?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Any ideas? (a little off topic)

2005-07-30 Thread Paul Guello
If I understand what you want to, get a radar image to
a remote or mobile location. I thought about two ways
to do this. First, break it down into source and
transport.

The radar image or source material could either be
taken directly from a video output of a computer (use
a video card that has a standard video output). Or
take the video output from a vcr or other video tuner
if the radar is from TV, and do a video capture. This
could also be done with a computer.

For transport either use wireless internet or the 440
ham ban. Part of the 2.4 GHz wireless internet band
is within a ham band, so a ham can legally run higher
power bi-directional amplifiers. The laptop used for
receiving could have a card with external antenna
jack. Or use the 440 ham band to do TV transmission.
There are a couple of cable TV channels that lie
within the 440 ham band. So, with the right equipment
a video transmitter could be setup and then use a
cable ready TV for the receiver.

Check the ARRL website for more information on both of
these ideas.

the mast...??? I looked up the physical specs and found the mast is the same length (258") for the A, B, and C ranges. So I may be able to drill some new holes, plug some old ones and get away with it. I'd like to know for certain if they used wider spacing before I dig too far into this. I'm about to disassemble the antenna and see what the phasing harness consists of (hopefully the coax has meaningful numbers on it) Thanks, Paul N1BUGYahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] message error

2004-08-30 Thread Paul Guello
Don't assume that antenna gain is the only thing that
effects range. Antenna height, size and length of
feedline, quality of antenna and how it is mounted and
duplexer quality and tuning all effect range as well
as transmitter power and overall receiver sensitivity.
High RF enviroments can also degrade receiver
performance. Take a look at your repeater as a
system, looking at the quality of all of the devices
as well as the quality of the installation. One
poorly installed connector can eliminate all the
bennifits from everything else being correct.

Is there an Air Base in the neighborhood? We have interference on the UHF band here also. Several technicians spent a lot of time tracing it to the local Air Base using direction finding techniques. The Air Force people just tell you to go away, when questioned. Checking the rules, the military does have primary use of the UHF frequencies.

As the propagation across the lake is enhanced, they become a problem. Its hard to know how much to trust beam headings under these sorts of situations, but bearings taken seem to indicate an origin, of both signals, slightly north of Milwaukee. While it would be wonderful if the FCC was actually interested in pursuing complaints of unlicensed operation on their own, at this point I'm prepared to offer cash rewards to those which

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Decibel repeater antenna question......

2004-04-18 Thread Paul Guello

One of the most impressive features of the Decibel antennas is their longevity. They will easily last 20 to 30 years, if installed correctly. These are well designed, well built and worth the investment.bradley glen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I've worked on a great many of these types of antenna arrays in the last35+ years and every one had an impedance of 50 ohms at the individualelement. An odd multiple of a 1/4 wavelength of 75 ohm coax takes it to 100ohms. When stacking elements two 100 ohm loads in parallel are 50. Then doit again for four bays, again for eight, etc. In free space their impedance would be higher, but they are designed towork only a few inched from a mast pipe and normally the elements are fairlyfat in terms of diameter to length ratio Hence the
nominal 50 ohmimpedance. Another scheme was to use two bays, make the feed line from each bay apiece of 50 ohm cable, the length being unimportant other than being equal, and tying them together for 25 ohms. Then a special 35 ohm 1/4 wave piece ofline brought it back to 50 ohms. Two pieces of 75 ohm cable in parallelwould do the same transformation but can be messy to fabricate. YMMV, though, 73, Al K9SI Judging from the cable and the lengths listed, each
dipole must present a 100 ohm impedence, not 50,assuming the data is correct. IF the lengths and types of coax are correctly represented by the web article (and I don't know that for a fact) THEN the impedence would work out to 100 ohms per bay. 50 ohm impedence per bay does not work out correctly, given the info from the web site. http://www.kc5dgc.net/db224.htm Taking their measurements, all coax sections are "Q" sections, or impedence transformers. A 75 ohm Q section will transform 50 to 100 ohs OR 100 to 50 ohms. A 35 ohm q section will transform 50 ohms to 25 ohms OR 25 ohm to 50 ohms. Now, you can start from
either end if you know the impedence. Since we know this antenna is 50 ohms at the feed point, and from there it goes through a 35 ohm Q section, the impedence at the first tee would be 25 ohms. Since 2 cables are in parallel at this tee, each cable (at that point) must represent 50 ohms (2 50 ohm resistors paralleled give 25 ohms). Now you can take either leg at this point, since the top pair and the bottom pair are identical. Going through the 35 ohm Q section transforms our 50 ohms to 25 ohms. This would be at the upper or lower tee. At this tee, to have 25 ohms, we must have a pair of 50 ohm impedences meeting at the tee. Now we go through a 75 ohm Q section, which raises the impedence to 100 ohms, which should be the impedence of each dipole, if we
want the thing to match. Going backwards, start at the dipole and assume 100 ohms. The 75 ohm Q section changes this to 50 ohms. Two 50 ohms in parallel is 25 ohms (at the top or bottom tee). The 35 ohm Q section changes this to 50 ohms, again in parallel with the bottom 2 bays which would also be 50 ohms, which gives 25 ohms. The final 35 ohm Q section transforms the 25 ohms to 50 ohms, to feed our coax of any length. Now, if we assume each dipole is 50 ohms, here's what happens. The first 75 ohm Q section will increase the impedence to 100 ohms. 2 100 ohms in parallel will give 50 ohms. The 35 ohm Q section will transform that to 25 ohms. Now we have two 25 ohms in parallel, giving us 12.5 ohms going into the last Q
section. By using Q section calculations, this 35 ohm section would transform the impedence to 100 ohms, or a 2 to 1 match for our 50 ohm coaxial line. Although 2 to 1

There are not any baluns on these antennas. If I remember right, they use 75 ohm coax on each bay (odd multiples of quarter wave length) and 35 ohm coax on the feed (again odd multiples) to match the impedance to 50 ohms. This info was on the group a while back, somebody must still have it.
