Re: Backups via 802.11b
Andrew, Only issue we've had is that we don't see very good backup speeds over 802.11. Best we ever get is 30mb/min over TCP/IP. And this is under "ideal" conditions - only 1 laptop on the wireless segment, 20ft away from the basestation. But other than the speed issue, things work great. I've never had a backup fail or had any other problems. Our backup server is a 233 beige G3, AIT changer on a 100mbit switched port. Our iBooks and WaveLan enabled PC Mac laptops all connect to Lucent WavePoint base stations (so we're not exactly talking "apples to apples" here since we don't use Airport bases). Each WavePoint has its own 100mbit switched port on the same switch as the Retrospect server. I know, I know, it seems a waste of good bandwidth to plug a WavePoint into a 100mbit switched port but it just makes me *feel* better to have those things on their own segments! =) HTH, Mark Maytum Pompanoosuc Mills Corporation Andrew Philipoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/02/00 11:43 AM Please respond to "retro-talk" To: "retro-talk" [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:Backups via 802.11b We are about to roll out wireless ethernet (AirPort) on all our PowerBooks via Lucent WaveLan PC cards and AirPort enabled G4 towers. Re: Since the list is quiet I'll throw this out there.
Jerry, We back up 3 appleshare and 2 NT servers with one of our Retrospect servers. Everything works flawlessly. Make sure you back up using the retrospect client and not by remotely mounting Applshare volumes (you don't backup the privileges with the latter). I (and many others on the list) have been bitten at one time or another by not paying close attention to proper termination, cabling of the backup device. It's also been recommended by others to put your backup device on its own SCSI bus. If I may make one suggestion: Just to give yourself peace of mind, it's a good thing to do a "test nuke". If you can, remove your working mirror disks from the server and them aside and grab a fresh HD and drop it in your server. Totally restore it from a retrospect backup, carefully following the instructions in Ch9 of the user's manual. If something goes horribly wrong, you can always drop your working mirror back in. Every couple of months we do "drills" on one of our test servers - we make one of our techs see how fast they can bring a server back from just a catalog and a tape. It really keeps the stress level to a minimum when we *really* have to do a restore. HTH, Mark Maytum Pompanoosuc Mills Corporation Hi I'm new to the list here and thought I'd ask a question that some of you here might have knowledge about. Quick synopsis of what's going on and what the plan is and ask for any advice. Feb 2000, Purchased 3 Mac AppleShare IP 6.3 Servers (G4/400), as well as a Micronet DataDock for each server with (2) 36Gig drives (mirrored). No backup solution was purchased as we ran out of money for it and it was planned as a test deployment. Apr 2000, Just purchased a (G4/450) Desktop a HP SureStor 718 Autoloader, and Retrospect Workgroup. What should I be aware of in the deployment of the Backup "server" is there any Red flags that I should avoid on the install of Retro Workgroup? If these questions have already been answered by a previous post please let me know which number and I'll look at that. Re: AIT tape loaders-any real world experiences?
Funny you should mention this. Our Seagate AIT loader that has been chugging away for about a year just died. Found it ate a tape and I had to perform surgery to get the magazine out - force eject didn't work. FWIW, a guy a Seagate told me they've found that tapes wear pretty quickly in these things and that I should probably be replacing them more often than I am. We cycle four different magazines through this thing and I was just about to replace them when one got eaten. A production set of DAT tapes normally last us a year so I figured that AIT's would too. Guess I was wrong! :-) All in all though we've been pretty happy with it and Seagates support too. They're advance replacing me a new unit which sould be here today - I should note that I got the tape-eater working again but Seagate insisted on replacing it. It certainly is pretty cool just to slam a magazine in the thing and change it every monday morning - I can basically forget about it. The only thing I can think of that would be *cooler* is if Retrospect read those little chips on the AIT tapes. It can take several minutes for retrospect to query a new magazine because it actually has to read tape. hint, hint. Also, anybody have a solution for notification of failures? I've been toying with hacking up an applescript solution to my pager, but if someone's already done it... ;-) OK, that would be cooler still! Howdy, I'm running a system with about 100 cpus. To this point we've been using a single AIT2 drive, and doing a lot of tape changing to deal with backups. However, we're still growing and it seems the single drive solution is starting to show it's inadequacy for our needs. So, we're looking into solutions. We're currently running a Cybernetics library for our unix systems, under Arkeia (since there was no dantz solution-hint hint) ;-). For the most part we've been happy with it, but it does exhibit occasional quirks. We like the idea of a tape library, as it allows for full automation with less chances for user error. What I'd be very interested in hearing are any real world experiences with Retrospect and AIT tape libraries. Good or bad. Before we plunk down that kind of cash we'd like to make the decision as informed as possible. We're currently dealing with about 300+gigs total data(full backups take 3-4 weekends, with one AIT2 per weekend, nightly incrementals are around 6gigs), but expect that to grow rather quickly and want to leave some headroom. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Also, anybody have a solution for notification of failures? Re: Problems when asking for new tape.
Eric, We use MacAT ($20 shareware) to boot our ASIP servers every night after their backups (5am). In 6.2 you can write an applescript with a disconnect countdown and even a disconnect message (not that there's anyone to see it at 5am, it just makes me happy) - you have MacAT run the script and then restart (quitting all other applications) and viola! Happy restarted server every morning. I couldn't figure out to script this with 6.3 so I just have MacAT restart the thing without first shutting down the ASIP process. I'm still not sure I'm supposed to do it this way, but it seems to work... When the tape fills up and Retrospect stops to ask for a new tape, problems are created on the server. Whichever volume was being backed up when the request is posted ends up having files that can't be found, can't be opened, or for which the owner is said to not have sufficient privileges. Rebooting the server corrects these problem (files can be found and are OK, etc.) Unfortunately, finding a convenient time to reboot my server every week is not easy. Any thoughts? Re: AIT tape loaders-any real world experiences?
AFAIK, you are correct. All these guys are OEMing Sony's mechanism into their boxes. BTW, Seagate isn't making the Sidewinder200 anymore. The reason we went with Seagate's box is because we've had very good experiences with their tech support and service. And indeed they came through in this case too - I had an advance replacement the next day, no questions asked. I like that. :-) Let me just ask you, we're looking into getting an AIT, isn't it Sony that are doing all the technology stuff and other brands, like Seagate and LaCie put Sonys technology inside the box and their own name on the utside? / jakob -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Shuting Down NT Apps
Most apps (but not all I've found) respond to -q. So you can use the AT command scheduler (included in the NT Resource kit: Start MenuProgram FilesResource Kit 4.0ConfigurationCommand Scheduler) to make a command that specifies the path to filemaker and give it the -q command: c:\Program Files\FileMakerPro\fmp.exe -q I don't really know that FileMaker is called fmp.exe in Windows, but you get the idea. And some apps have their own wierd commands that are sort of non-standard that allow you to do all sorts of things from the command prompt. I dunno about FileMaker but I'd try just entering this in the command shell to see if it works. If it does, you can script it with the command scheduler. Another thing you could do is to set up FileMaker as a service. Use srvany.exe to do this. Again this is included in the NT Resource kit - there are some easy to follow instructions to do this in a read me included with it. The cool thing about this method is that you can have FileMaker start as a service and open up databases automatically at startup whether anyone logs in or not. And services can be scheduled to start and stop in the AT command scheduler using the NETSVC command which does work with everything: NETSVC yourservicename \\yourcomputer \stop We have Faircom running on NT and this is exactly how we back it up with retrospect. We stop the service, retrospect backs everything up around 2am. Then at 5am, we have an AT command run that restarts the server. And when the server restarts, Faircom loads as a service. Now whatever method you end up using to get fmp to stop, I can't stress how important it is to test a restore after you do a backup. I don't know what effect this would have on any open databases. Re: backing up the AppleShare PDS file with Retrospect?
I think as long as the AppleShare server is running when you do your backups, permissions get backed up automatically. If you ever have to restore an entire ASIP volume, following the Retrospect instructions (you do a second restore for privs.) works just fine. Re: How to keep Backup sets/tapes specific to a magazine?
David, It's not pretty, but here's what we do: We have a whole bunch of magazines and we assign a different backup set to each magazine (obviously). But we only assign one backup set at a time to the single script. Each week on Monday morning, it is someone's task to switch the magazine and manually edit the script to use the next backup set for the new magazine - at any given moment the backup script has only one backup set assigned to it. Hope that makes sense. I *thought* I remember someone from Dantz saying awhile ago that in a future version you'll be able to manually assign an empty tape to a storage set. If you name an empty tape now, Retrospect still sees it as blank and will use it however it sees fit. Granted, that's a feature, not a bug. But it would also be a good feature to override that feature. :-) Mark Maytum Pompanoosuc Mills Corporation Kraut, David [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/12/01 09:38 PM Please respond to retro-talk To:'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:How to keep Backup sets/tapes specific to a magazine? Each Backup set has (6) tapes in a separate magazine ( Magazine A and Magazine B ) which I use in my Surestore DLT 818 Autoloader. I do not want Backup Set A tapes in magazine A to ever mix with the tapes in Backup Set B magazine B. However, If I forget to remove the magazine on the day the script switches from A to B and there is an empty tape on the inserted magazine, Retrospect will create a new tape labeled with the other backup set and start backing up to tape causing a mix of backup set A and B? Is there anyway to stop this while still allowing Retrospect to use an available tape if it runs out of room? Thanks! David
Re: How to keep Backup sets/tapes specific to a magazine?
I believe if you have a storage set named Bob and you erase and name all your tapes in a magazine, 1-Bob...8-Bob, etc. (assuming an 8 tape mag) ANY other backup set assigned to that script will be able to use those empty named tapes. Only after they have data on them does retrospect really assign them to the Bob backup set. Now this is under 4.2. If you name an empty tape, it really means nothing until the backup set actually writes to it. Same under 4.3? I don't know. (or something similar) I didn't think a script would grab it if the tape was named. Tim
Backup OS/2 client?
Hi happy listas, In the next few weeks I'm going to be building up a voice processing system (AVT) that needs to run on OS/2 Warp 4. I don't know jack about OS/2 (yet) but I do know (or do I?) that there's no Retro client for it. I really don't want to introduce another backup strategy into the mix. I'm pretty sure I can script something to have this thing dump files onto an NT server where Retrospect can get them. But I like that warm happy feeling knowing that I can restore a box, OS and all in under an hour. Has anybody developed a Retrospect related backup solution for OS/2? Don't care how "out there" it is. As always I'm interested in any helpful tips or tricks. Re: auto erase tapes
Michael, Try making a storage set for each tape you want to use in your backup script. If your backup script is set to "full" or "recycle" (depending on your version of retro) the backup script will overwrite the tape when it's re-inserted. are storage sets xplatform?
Why? I have retro running locally on an ASIP server with a RAID array attached. Backs up to an AIT changer. I want to nuke the array and move it to a W2K server. I'd like to install retro on the W2K box, copy over the storage sets from the ASIP server, attach the tape changer, reformat the array NTFS and just restore all the files into a mac enabled sharepoint. I don't care about keeping privs or anything fancy. I just want the files. I've never used a Win version of retrospect before so I don't know much about it...other than I need to buy it. As a last resort I could rebuild the storage sets from retro on the W2K box (can this even be done?) but that would probably take longer than I'd care to wait. :-) Can I do this?
