The Mandrive tarball SHOULD be exactly the same as the tarball
in the rpm-5.3.7-*.src.rpm or there's gonna be a mess.

The mandriva rpm5.3.7 tarball is  different from the tarball present in
rpm5.3.7 snapshot http://rpm5.org/files/rpm/rpm-5.3/SNAPSHOT/

I think Øyvind Karlsen are  regenerating the tarball with devtool. However,
at this stage of development of 5.3, I think it's normal.

There's a tarball inside the rpm-5.3.6-*.src.rpm.

Are you saying that cvs breaks while doing a checkout?

I saw that too. Th fix was to use cvs-1.11.x rather cvs-1.12.x as in 
OpenIndiana.

Its likely a well known problem, and there's likely a better
fix than using cvs-1.11.x. I was intereretsted in reliable,
nothing else.
