{S-Scale List} Tonite is it!

2011-03-17 Thread Bob Werre
For some reason, I've been struggling in replacing a decoder in my USRA
Mike. I've always reached the point of everything doing fine until
putting the boiler and tender shells into position. That's why I had
asked about the capacitor a couple of days ago. I've found the
problem! It was with the LED headlight. I had used a 3mm with the
leads snipped short and run into the boiler front--I had coated the wire
leads with liquid insulation. It had worked in the past, but when I
hooked it up Tuesday evening the engine's chuff sound went crazy with
the engine just sitting there. Is is sort of like if you turned on the
water in the bathroom sink and your outside sprinkler system turns
on--in other words it didn't make sense!

Anyway I unplugged the headlight wires and things were okay. So I then
removed the LED and installed one of those surface mounted
super-miniature units as a replacement. I re-installed the boiler last
night and things are pretty much solved. I did burn out the forward
headlight function, so I've reversed the engines front to back CV and
now use the rear light function as the forward light--a few minutes of
work but it saves a repair session back to Durango. Tonite I'll add the
pilot and trailing trucks and be running trains again--fingers crossed!

I've done many successful DCC installations but this one was pretty sneaky.

Re: {S-Scale List} Re: Tonite is it!

2011-03-17 Thread Bob Werre
George, I mounted the speaker in the 'traditional' place facing down in
the tender. I used either a speaker from Litchfield station or one from
Railmaster--I bought from both companies close to each other.

With my Pacific I was able to put the decoder in the engine, which cuts
down somewhat with the number of wires between tender/engine--always a
good thing! I used some double sided foam tape and fastened it on top
of the gearbox. My Mikado didn't have that kind of room without doing a
bunch of brass surgery!

Good luck.
Bob

My Berk, 2-10-4's and Niagara all have room for a bass reflex speaker in the

{S-Scale List} Decals

I am about to the take the next step on putting the decals on my painted box
car.

One will be at a slight angle, upward.

Any hits I need to know before I attempt to put these on.

I have put decals on a car before, as I used Solvaset, of course and eyeballed
the location.

but thought I would ask, since I know many of you do your own cars.

http://www.merchantsfoodservice.com/ On this website you will see a Frosty
Acres logo that will go on the car, as it is at a 15 degree angle of so.

Thanks.

{S-Scale List} Decals

2011-03-17 Thread Bill Lane
Mike,

Decals can require much different strengths of setting solution depending on
the film used. Solveset is by far the strongest right out of the bottle. I
almost never use it. Start with the Microscale blue bottle and work up
through the Microscale red bottle to see how things go. Solveset can turn
your decals into a blob of goo in a blink of an eye..

Subject: {S-Scale List} Beginner question

Hi, I'm Mike, and I'm a train addict. HO in my teens, N scale in adulthood, but
my eyesight isn't what it used to be, and I'm seriously thinking about going
upscale. S scale intrigues me because it's off the beaten path, and the size
seems just about right. I can handle an airbrush, and I've scratchbuilt a
structure or two, so I can live without gazillions of commercial products.

But I have one big concern. My friendly local hobby-shop owner feels that the
available S-scale turnouts are unreliable. (He used a stronger word, but you
get the idea.) Has anyone else had a bad experience with turnouts?

{S-Scale List} turnouts

2011-03-17 Thread Bill Lane
Mike,

Welcome to the group. We love newbies especially if you are coming from a
smaller scale!

If you intend to go SCALE meaning not using American Flyer or hi-rail
wheels, and use code 70 to 100 I would recommend Tomalco
http://www.tomalcotrack.com for flex track and turnouts. If you previously
liked to make your own turnouts you could consider Fast Tracks.
http://www.handlaidtrack.com/s-scale-a/172.htm

I am making my layout bigger now and am using both.

Thank You,

  Bill,

Thanks as the decals are from LBR. He recommends to use Solvaset, so I am
assuming it will work okay with this film on the decal.

My real question was how to position the decal.

Just position it until it looks right to you? meaning me of course, as it will
be the same decal on both side.

I have used Solvaset on his decals in the past with no problems of the decal
falling apart.

Mike

Re: {S-Scale List} decals

2011-03-17 Thread Michael Linda Marmer
Bill,

Thanks, as my terminology in the train world is not the greatest.

I take it rivets are the little bumps on the side of the car like picture here.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/34086110@N06/5067517447/

Okay, using these rivets on the car, yes, I see that would work in counting the
rivets on both side to be the proper place.

thanks!!!

Mike

If you can scratch build a structure you can scratch build a switch to suit
your exact needs just like modelers have done for decades in HO scale. Only
difference is it's easier in S scale cause the parts are a bit bigger and
easier to handle.dave

I would agree with the micro scale process if one is not sure about their
decaling skills. Solvaset can be diluted with water but it takes some
experience while the micro scale system is pretty fool proof.
This is assuming you have a smooth glossy surface to decal on? If it's rough

something that needs to be practiced on test shells before doing a keeper
