{S-Scale List} Plywood or no wood

2013-01-31 Thread Bill Lane
With what is claimed to be the world's largest private model railroad Ken
McCorry lives just over an hour from me. Here is just 1 Google hit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IE_7VfFogc

Dump Ken McCorry in Google to see for yourself. In the 15+ years I have
been going there he has changed eras a few times which means swapping out
literally hundreds of locos and thousands of cars. I am pretty sure he has
finally come back to transition era PRR where we all wanted to see it
anyway!

It is housed in a barn looking structure built just for the layout which is
on the second floor. The first floor is a very large garage area for his
classic cars and a lounge.

While the layout is impressive beyond words the benchwork is also amazing.
The levels vary greatly so there is easy access to see how the layout is
supported. I got some strange looks during open houses. While everyone else
was looking at the trains I was checking out cantilevered turnarounds
without legs!

According to Ken there is not ONE piece of pine in the whole place!
Everything top to bottom is made from plywood. He ran it like a business
buying complete skids of plywood. All cut lists were computer generated
getting the best yield from the sheets. Everything was cut downstairs before
the cars arrived. You can imagine the swarm of helper bees that would want
to help build this monster. Ken said he had the majority of the benchwork up
in a few months. Organization and efficiency at work!

Thank You,
Bill Lane

Over the 20+ years the Houston S Gaugers have set up our modules, I
think we only did freebie's twice. Of course, on the other end even
with a few hundred in payment you rarely make anything either. I guess
that is sort of like being a S manufacturer!

We typically move our modules in a series of SUV's, pickups and standard
cars. This isn't the most efficient especially with the price of gas,
but rentals have their problems too

Bob Werre

. We were not invited back. To be fair, we rarely went to shows that
we were not reimbursed for our expenses. We had to rent a truck to move
the modules, etc... So if they paid us

There are lots of advantages to using plywood (the good stuff!) for framing:
the main one is that you can avoid pilot holes since the plywood doesn't

It has advantages and dis-advantages. It doesn't split across the grain but
it splits between layers if one drives nails or screws into the end grain
wrong. About 1/3 of the grain is always running the wrong direction which stops
splitting but can be a problem if it is ripped too narrow. It's easier to find
good plywood but if one needs a couple of 1X4's it's easier to rip them from a
1X8 than from a sheet of plywood. The trick is learning to use everything and
choosing what works best for a particular situation depending on product
availability, tool access, and time constraints. I'm building a new N scale
shelf layout and framed it with a 1/2 inch plywood top on 1X4 pine box grid,
it's way stronger than it needs to be for N scale but I had all the material
here in the shop so could assemble it all in a couple of hours.DaveBranum

Any track switch now takes me about an hour to build - that includes bolt and
plate detail. I would probably use ProtoCraft frogs if they had sizes I want. I
don't use any fixture (FastTracks). I can build three or four switches in the
amount of time it took to assemble and weather a PRS boxcar.

{S-Scale List} PRR GLa project update.

2013-01-31 Thread coalsmoker2194
Just posted some photo's of the GLa project in the photo section, along with
some non Pennsy stuff. The photos never seem to post in the order I want them,
so I'm sorry for their lack of order. The GLa is a modified SHS USRA hopper.
Six scale inches have been removed from the top, and the frame modified so the
car body sits lower on the frame. There is a photo of it with a SHS hopper for
comparison. A couple of PRS 40 footers in B+O, and L+N. Also, a recently
finished GG1, (Don't really care for the yellow decals, but it was all I could
find right now.) A 1952 Pennsy X44 boxcar from a PRS kit. (Modified the side
sills, for an easy conversion). Also, finally got some track and turnouts, and
hope to start putting it down soon.

Lots of modeling falls under the insane category but we still persevere.
When I get back to working on my S layout I plan to try adding ties plates
to the switches too. I'm going to experiment with those cardboard paint color
samples they have a the paint store, the rust colored cardboard looks about
right when cut up into small tie plates. I'm not too worried about the raised
edge as it is so small that it probably won't be apparent, my main concern is
how to get them aligned properly without spending a lot of time and then if my
Kadee spiker can drive thru them without splitting the cardboard too much?
As for track i'll definitely use tomalco or shinohara flextrack for the bulk
of the layout and just hand lay a few short stretches of track around the
handlaid switches. Track and switches are two separate stories when it comes to
the supply, the cost, and the ease of building your own. DaveBranum

Re: {S-Scale List} roof machinery

2013-01-31 Thread Bill Rigsby
Alex,
Pine Canyon Models used to make such things. Check with the new folks who have
the business to see if they have made any.

{S-Scale List} Might sell my S-Mod yard

2013-01-31 Thread Bill Lane
Unless Don T can give a reasonable guarantee that there will be more CJSS
Get Togethers, for the past few days I have been thinking about selling my
first S-Mod compatible yard. The construction of it is in great detail here:
http://www.lanestrains.com/S_Scale_Modules.htm

It is:

24 x 20 feet - 2) 4 foot sections 2) 6 foot sections

Benchwork is 100% constructed from birch plywood

2 tracks to 8 and back to 2 built to S Mod track standards

All track is code 100 hand laid. I will NEVER do that again!

All turnouts are #6 except the 2 main line crossovers are #8. Everything
will run on it!

19 turnouts total.

It is currently still S-Mod compatible meaning it can go DC or DCC. We have
run DCC on it just fine as is but set everything to 1 cab. There are 4 cabs
total. The beauty is you can shut down the individual blocks and see it all
from the control panel.

The control panel folds up into a suitcase.

All turnouts are powered but this is currently the weak part. They are twin
coil that don't have the power to consistently throw. They should be
replaced with stall motors. I am currently in love with the Hankscraft
motors

It was self contained meaning I used to supply the power for the set up of
the day. Some things have been swapped to my home layout.

It is designed to be moveable. I could have it set up and trains running
virtually unassisted in 1 hour flat only using needle nose pliers and a
small screwdriver. It is all in the design to make set up quick and
painless.

You never have to take legs off. They fold up inside.

You don't need bridge rails for the interior joints. There are 3 bridge rail
sections.

It is sceniced and ballasted.

The bakers racks come with it. I have had it fit in my 2 vehicles since
building it, a 1988 Bronco II and my 2003 Escape.

You obviously don't have to take it on the road. It is an instant yard
expansion or staging yard that can be run on the day you get it.

There is ZERO chance it can be shipped and not expect damage. I will not
even try.

I do not have a price set. It was many hundreds of hours to build. If
needed, you can pay for it now and pick up whenever you get to South Jersey.
It is not in my way.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
