Re: {S-Scale List} Overland FT question
Bud, Everyone is correct--just grab a couple of Rusty's brass balls. Mine came from RR early on, so no problems for a long time. Bill brings up, to me anyhow, the biggest problem with sound in any engine--just too many fine wires. I have a favorite engine of mine down for months now---I had removed the decoder for some work. I plugged it back in and things were doing fine on my bench. I install the tender shell and everything died. The initial wiring was installed back in my Dynatrol daze and with a socket fastened to a custom hole in the tender, so I hate to mess with that but I might have to--I'm assuming (and hoping)just a broken wire. Just need some time which is scarce right now. Bob Werre PhotoTraxx HI Bud -- I seem to recall a similar issue with mine very early in their lives. I took the shafts out, removed the balls (the slipping point), roughed up the shafts and put the balls back on again with a bit of super glue. End of problem to this day... Rusty Rustermier has (had?) some replacement balls which I would use if this is your problem. A much nicer set of horns less likely to chew into the slots of the sockets. I have a few pairs for the next round of problems... Speaking of problems, just when you think you have everything dialed in... My RRM 4-8-2 quit cold just before I was expecting a guest. After he left, I opened it up (quite the task trying to free the frame from the boiler – very close tolerances plus a lot of details to work around) and found a wire that was not attached at one end. Although there was no obvious attach point, its position indicated where it ought to be attached. After some very deft wire stripping and resoldering, then getting three pairs of plugs properly oriented and connected, it is back on the track and running fine again. Next time it fails, I will rewire the whole engine to avoid the electronic unit stuck in there somewhere. Have fun! Bill Winans -- Gents, I believe my Overland FT's have a slipping drive shaft problem by the sounds coming from them. Before I take the shells off and check them out, I am curious if anyone else has had similar issues with these and were they known for this? Before I purchased these units used, I personally witnessed them hauling a 25 car train with no issues, but now after sitting idle for a year or two they make a lot of noise but very little movement. Re: {S-Scale List} 2 motors vs. 1 motor Driveshafts
I wouldn't be overly concerned about dual motors, despite what Bill is saying think about all the joints that could cause problems in say a OMI E unit. I my math is clear this morning you have 9 connections, so whether you have one or two motors, it's the connections that cause the problems. Now, one disadvantage of two motors is the additional space--aka the Sunset GP's. The RR units have wisely sunk the motors into the fuel tanks on my SD-9 so there's lots of room for electronic junk. I don't know how many connections a vertical motor has but I suspect there are less to worry about. Besides it's sort of like one leg running a bit faster than the other--because your on tracks you won't be running in circles! Bob Werre PhotoTraxx On 2/9/13 6:00 PM, Bill Lane wrote: In spite of multiple reports that the 2 vertical motor drives are performing very well, I will always prefer 1 motor and driveshafts. No 2 motors will ever be perfectly synchronized. Since they are/will be coming RTR with DCC that lessons my concerns for wiring it though. I have 6 or so mid 90s Overland/RRM diesels that came with 2 small HO motors not coupled together. I will swap that set up out for 1 center motor and driveshafts. If the motors were tied together I might not be as motivated to change it. The one possible plus about the 2 motor drive would on an articulated, if 1 drive could slip momentarily and have the sound unit pick up on the slip. That would be interesting! Like it or not I have no choice. That is the way it seems new locos are heading with 2 motors. That's what buddies do Ed.disagree and still remain buddies. VBG. But, in this case MTH has obviously done their homework since you report their S locos run slow and smooth. My prejudice comes from my O scale experience with the Atlas and Lionel China Drives that needed a lot of work or electronics to make them behave. Guys were wiring the two motors in parallel to slow them down and they still preformed poorly below 4-5 SMPH, especially on straight DC. Switching was out of the question. But, I understand later offerings from these two manufacturers ran better, but I never went back after my 1st experience. This still leaves a couple of issues like having a motor sticking up in the cab instead of a cab interior, tons of electronics to control the two motors and the exposed gears between the truck and the sideframes.at least on the O scale locos. I had the Y-3 here and took it apart to make a few minor repairs that occurred during shipping just before the OS West meet. Nothing really earth shattering. I can report that the Y-3 does have two good motors, not your typical Chinese junk. Each motor drives the main driver on each of the two mechanism's and that main driver is what turns the other drivers, just like on a scale brass model. The gearing isn't some clock looking gearsThe boiler and tender are both nicely done die castings. There are no wires between the cab and tender. The tender has some things inside that I would take out. One is a little contraption that allows the locomotive to run around American Flyer style curves. The other is the electronic coupler wiring for the; Lobster Claw coupler. I ran the model using a American Flyer 30B transformer. It is possible to teach this thing what to do. The only problem I had was the 30B puts out a constant 5-6 volts to the track. It's a flyer thing. The model does reproduce the slipping effect of one engine turning the drivers over faster than the other on hard acceleration, how neat. The model also changed volume under acceleration and lowered it when reducing speed. There is a volume control switch built in, A smoke control switch built in. Lionel does have the clock work looking gears on the SD-70 for each of the wheels. I personally do not like exposed gearing like that. It provides a perfect situation to get the gears jammed while running. Rusty, on the left Coast, Rustermier But, I understand later offerings from these two manufacturers ran better, but I never went back after my 1st experience. {S-Scale List} PRSL Transfer caboose [3 Attachments]
This is the start of my PRSL Transfer caboose. I just got the shell on Saturday. I am building everything that is missing from brass. It started as a PRS 50' boxcar roof. I am going for good enough here. I did not have plans to supply. One still survives about 2 hours from here. Ironically I am planning a visit to it in about a month for MY part of the build, after the cab was built! Oh well. This caboose is a little out of my era but I have a Overland GP38-2 that will alleged to be PRSL at some point. I am big on matching cabeese to the engines. 2 items that are still not resolved are the material to make the large open metal grid porches. I am hoping to find suitable (meaning close enough) brass trucks with a leaf spring for it, but am likely to use the American Models caboose trucks. Re: {S-Scale List} Cornfield!
Very nice Trevor. I want a couple of shallow corn fields on my layout but was never happy with what I saw--you got it right! And yes you will have to install some fencing to keep those cows away. A great place to put a few rows is where the background blends into the layout itself. With that in mind, a few years ago I had purchased some corn plants that were made from an etched sheet of brass. It had very nice leaf detail, but I couldn't find a way to contour the brass sheet to fit the slopes and small hills common on my layout. I guess they will find their place on ebay! The video shows it on a mainline run on my layout pulling a l-o-n-g string of loaded hoppers. Another shorter video shows it passing through a #6 double slip switch made from a Fast Track fixture. It runs smoothly and you can hear the sound effects better. I sure would like to see video footage of this locomotive modernizing Loizeaux's New York Central of California. - Earl Henry Keep in mind that the video's goal is to show the 2-8-8-2 running at both medium and slow speeds over scale trackage. It does not emphasize scenery or pretty clouds on the backdrop or rivers or bridges. Still, it is kind of interesting if you would like to see Fred Rouse's scale conversion efforts closeup. Looks great, Trevor. I was wondering if the HO cornstalks would be suitable for S. I was thinking of using the O Scale stalks (when I get around to it...) I'll be able to save a couple of bucks now. There's more in the HO pack than in the O pack. Rich G(ajnak) --- In S-Scale@yahoogroups.com, tpm1ca wrote: Hi everyone: Over two days (Friday and Saturday), I planted corn on my layout. Dern tootin' there is, Earl. It will be posted as soon as Dick Karnes' product review of the Y-3 is complete and posted. I think it will answer just about every question there might be about this loco. THAT IS OK ED. YOU CAN ADD SCENERY AT A LATER DATE! Thought I would have some fun with you, knowing what a magnificent job you and your team have done with scenery. I look forward to seeing the video Still, it is kind of interesting if you would like to see Fred Rouse's scale conversion efforts closeup. Fred is a very talented machinist and we are lucky to have him in S scale. Nuff said for now is that it works on scale trackage and more detailed questions should be directed to Fred at SSLS. _Fred@sscaleloco.com_ (mailto:f...@sscaleloco.com) Hope all this helps with your decision making. Baloney Size is not everything. Many of the high tech motors I have outpull any Pitman antique you can fit in the hood. It is a balance of the drive and enough weight to generate traction. Notice the size of the weight Kato is using. If that is a core-less motor with a planetary gear set then it may well pull like Big Blue at the speed of Timothy. No matter how well a toy train diesel performs it's possible to improve the on track performance with a drive designed to maximize the use the interior space for the actual drive components and leave the sound and control to smaller parts. It might not be as loud or as fast but it will be more responsive and pull a train at a scale speed better. {S-Scale List} size of motor
I will second TC’s comments. I remotored a SWM 4-4-2 with a motor that was about the size of the end of my thumb that outperforms most larger motors. It has no markings, and I got it in a grab bag at one of the conventions, but as Jettie Padgett will attest, that little motor is something else. Dead quiet and super smooth, I thought it was dead when I bench tested it, but when I grabbed the shaft, I burnt my fingers and there was no way I could stop it. Wish I could get a bunch more!!
