Bill: Just FYI I'm looking at the SAL Color Guide by Paul Faulk: on page 13, I see pix of cars 730 and 744 of the series 700-754 and they are indeed Pullman Green in 1965/1966 not red as in one of the pix. I think your red car is rust sans paint. The dark green used on the F units is SAL pullman green but we won't go there; for these purposes PG is correct. Sorry about the stealth list. I had planned to announce to the group nearer to Labor Day but forgot about the Yahoo automatic update feature. Yes it is a real list priced to sell. Bill, Glad you included a photo with that. What is it they say: a picture is worth a thousand words. So you made a collar to fit over the acetyl plastic pronged molding then bored through it to the shaft and threaded the collar for set screws? I know: that's what I said, but I'm just trying to get it straight for the probably hundreds of us who have one or more of these causing problems. Another solution I used on the RR Allegheny models is to drill through the coupling and the shaft with a carbide micro drill and insert a wire to secure the whole thing. I'll second Bill's complimentary statements about Jerry Glow. I have no problems with him; his products are high quality and he has been most responsive to new needs and ideas. He did have some very serious family issues during the past couple years, which must be taken into account. You also have to take into account that S is a one-off business for him that he does as a concession to our do it yourself ethic as a group here. {S-Scale List} Re: My New Lathe
Bill: Looks like you may have a Big Dog Metal Works lathe there -- if you do, you're a lucky dog [pun intended]. An earlier version called a Homier was much liked by owners (including mine second hand from Larry Jackman who was a professional machinist active in HO). Here is a write up on the lathe http://www.mini-lathe.com/Mini_lathe/Reviews/Big_dog/bigdog2.htm as seen on mini-lathe website which is a valuable source of information. BTW I have six jaw chuck and have cut driver tires from leadloy steel and stainless, so yes you can cut free machining steel as long as you dont push the depth of cut feed too much. PS the Big Dog is made in a different factory from the Sieg lathes sold by Harbor Freight and Micro Mark. But pause a moment before casting aside ye olde trusty Unimat -- I still use the Unimat almost as much as the Homier -- why? Cause you always need a small generous tolerance part here or there, or a drill press for something small and set up is easier than the biggins; and in a pinch you can literally build a fixture and mount the Unimat to the base or cross slide of the 7x14 and do things like drilling boilers etc. Just sayin, if you ain't broke and ain't out of space pause a while, Have fun, Chris Rooney -- J Chris Rooney CFA Email: vannes...@gmail.com www.VannessCompany.com Yahoo! {S-Scale List} Re: MicroMark Items
All: Amen to that but I bought one of the Micro Mark versions on sale a while back for a big discount and use it occasionally. There are drawbacks worth mentioning anyway so here goes. The feet stitck out in front of the ladder quite a ways so if you don't have free space under the layout about equal to the reach of the body pad plus six to eight inches you cannot get the ladder over your work. The unit folds up, but not really folds away, even folded up the unit takes up a good chunk of real estate -- say a rectangle 1 foot deep by 3 feet wide by four feet six inches high. Finally they are not instantaneous to unfold when folded away. Consequently, the good old kick library kick stool sees a lot more use and if I were to do it over I would probably invest in one of the fold-able ladders that fold in the middle and lean against the wall at the top. {S-Scale List} Re: NWSL Puller II
All: Agree about Bill's green machine -- I have a much smaller red machine but feel the same way -- machining any day is a good day. I will be looking into the NWSL puller, but I have an alternative for you who have a Sensipress or drake bench press that works just fine. It's called a V plate (also from NWSL). Cut a piece of square aluminum column or similar for a stand off for the V plate larger than the driver diameter and make sure it is square to the vertical column. This process is explained in the Rooney Bin file of the S group in the PDF entitled New shoes for 617. Be sure to scribe the axle-crankpin centers (just for sure fitting in case you pull to far and need to repress). Back the driver off only a few thousands wider. Check gauge constantly with wheel gauge. The V plate method will tend to assure a square push in this case. Chris -- J Chris Rooney CFA Email: vannes...@gmail.com www.VannessCompany.com Yahoo! {S-Scale List} Re: PRSL AS16
Bill got the hoses spot on for PRR. As usual with Baldwin -- many variations seems to be the case -- and a large number of 616's appeared not to have MU capability at all. Kalmbach DIesel Loco. Cyc. Vol. 2 on page 23 shows an end shot of BO 2249 with the same hose set up as Bill's. Caption says BO model features an air throttle, electric sanding control, and 24RL brake. The four hose connections are for throttle, main reservoir, actuating, and application/release hoses. Control of sanding is accomplished through the Baldwin 16-point electrical receptacle located under the catwalk step. Another photo on page 121 shows PRR 6966 (large sans serif cab numbers, conventional P- on hood) with exactly the same set up and both sets of hoses (i.e. 4 + 4) hooked up whereas BO photo shows only 4 (one side) hooked up. So it appears Bill got it exactly correct for PRR practices -- although I don't know why both sets of hoses would be necessary for a two unit lash up? Maybe the second set acted as a shunt around a following unit to still a third unit following that. In fact, I like that explanation a lot given you could only use an air signal once in a line reliably. Cheers, Chris Yahoo! All: Tsunami's have great tolerance for amperage -- about double the rated amount. They also have a friendly and knowledgeable tech support department, call or email if you're uncomfortable. We had such a conversation as you're having when I was agonizing about using a Tsunami in Raisin' s CO H-8 2-6-6-6, fearing it would not be adequate. Having made sure the H-8's were running well I've had no problems with two of them now equipped with Tsunami's and Rail Master's DLG-8 speakers. Both are in boiler mounted under the stack -- that's called believing. (Full disclosure tried one with an oval speaker in home-made enclosure that doesn't hold a candle to DLG-8, will change it out eventually.) {S-Scale List} Re: AM 3-Bay Hopper Issue / Question
John et al It sounds like your issue is the end/side sills being too "fat"; they also don't slope upward and inward as per the 50 ton image link below. Take heart there is a prototype or at least an explanation for the AM car. The time frame for these cars is long. The 1943 car builders cyclopedia (Newton Gregg reprint #70) shows an AAR standard 70 ton 3 (and 4) bay hopper plan from 1935 lasted well into 1960's although not always the same cars as hoppers wear rapidly. Most coal railroads caught on a little more slowly or not at all with offset sides, but ATSF had a series made in 1936 also shown in the reprint with "fat" end sills built by ACF. 70 ton 3 bay offset side hoppers first came into use on the CO in 1946 and before that CO favored the 50 ton variety as pictured here: http://www.cohs.org/repository/Archives/cohs/web/cohs-8408.jpg As far as I know the AAR standard cars did not have such end sills and the CO used mainly its own or modified designs anyway -- big dog with 26,000 hoppers calls the shots. On the other hand Pere Marquette had three bay offset hoppers from 1935 as pictured here: http://www.cohs.org/repository/Archives/cohs/web/cohs-8886.jpg Note that these PM cars do have the "fat" side sills at the ends (although they taper up some) and the external lap plates over ribs 1, 3, 8 and 10. They were made by Standard Steel Car at Butler PA. It is likely that the Bessemer AL plant was producing the same design in the South. Anyway the AM model highly resembles these cars IMHO. Hope this helps. Chris Rooney vannes...@comcast.net --
