{S-Scale List} Re: Wheel standards
Hi all: You have hit on a dear spot for me. Just a note that you can run code 88 thru code 110 on the same track IF all wheel sets have the same check gage! No new standards need to be generated. I use all three wheel sents on my own layout (codes 88, 93 110). They all use the same check gage. Also, PBL is not the only manufacture of wheel sets. NWSL and Precision Vintage Classics (PVC) also do code 88 110 wheel sets. NWSL will do Sn3 S for you, PVC has Sn3 with special requests for S. As far as I know PVC is the manufacture that checks for the correct check gage before sending wheel sets out or checking them before putting them in their kits. Remember the Track and Wheel check gages MUST be Equal, as a set dimension! But, only if you trouble free operation thru track switches. Both the NMRA and the NASG have the primary purpose of Interchange between models and layouts. I.E. I can take my stuff to your layout and have a reasonable expectation of the equipment working correctly. Creating P64, P48, P87 etc. only creates as bunch of elitists who don't care if their equipment works on your layout or not. My opinion. I suggest you check the check gage of every wheel set before running it on your layout reguardless of the manufacture of the wheel set! S or Sn3 doesn't matter, check them. I hope this will help. P64 used to imply an exact miniaturizing of the real wheel and rail specifications, but now seems to include the current scale S (code 88 through 110) wheel profile. My opinion is that the P64 designation be dropped, and the standards are either NASG/NMRA (RP 25) or 3/16 AAR (for the exact copy). If there is to be another set of standards it ought to be known as Extra Fine scale. I have to agree that the current standards for “regular” scale S are just dandy and don’t need to be messed with. {S-Scale List} Sn3.5(42)
All: I have a cab and side tanks to convert the Mantua 2-6-6-2 to S Scale. I also have some 4' arch bar trucks. My other Sn3 Scale trucks can have the wheel sets spread to 3.5' gage very easily. I am working on a Sn3 conversion of the Bachmann On30 4-4-0 2-6-6-2 to Sn3. With a change of cab they would not need to have the wheel sets changed for Sn3.5. The tender and tender trucks are another matter, both are too large. All the Sn3 car kits already available only need their wheel sets changed to 3.5' gage to be run on Sn3.5(42). As far as the WPYR trucks go I have both the Barber S2 and Estado all ready which can be regaged to Sn3.5. North Yard, PBL, Rio Grande Models, Railmaster and PVC all have Sn3 car kits available. Change the wheel sets to 0.650 gage and you are up and running. Track Gage: HO/On30/Sn3.5 all will use 0.650 as track gage. 0.0650 = 4' 8.5 in HO, 32.5 in O and 41.6 in S. Sn42 = 0.655. So HO track is close enough for me for Sn3.5(42). Track: I am suggesting using Micro Engineering On30 track for Sn3.5. The ties are more S scale than O scale. My thoughts Paul Vaughn PVC

{S-Scale List} Vulcan Trucks
Roy et all: I have Sn3 Vulcan trucks (Celcon with ribbed back wheel sets.) Paul PVC From: royhoffman royhoff...@yahoo.com Thanks Bob, I do have some B.T.S. 2 and 3 bay hoppers, but I wanted to come up with a lot of them like the EBT had. I bought a bunch of MDC HO hoppers for $7.25 each and used S scale EBT hopper decals that I bought from the Friends of the East Broad Top. The wheels were easy to regauge. The few differences are that the trucks aren't the Vulcan trucks used by the prototype and the HO hoppers have an extra rib. I was willing to cut a few corners to acheive my purposes. B.T.S. got me started, but has slowed down in producing EBT products due to lack of sales I suppose. Even though it's hard to model the EBT, it's not impossible. I wrote up my experiences at: http://royhoffman.com/pwrr/EBTinS I hope that some of the info is helpful. Roy

I can not beleive you guys are having such a bad time using PC Ties. I have used them sence 1966 with out the problems you are talking about. Try using a 0.015 strip of brass the width of the tie soldered to the point rail. You will have to notch the point base to accomidate the shim stock then solder in place.. Next drill a clearence hole for a 00-90 screw through the shim piece and a tap size hole in the pc tie then tap the tie for the 00-90 srew. Assemble in place. This will allow the points to pivot with out causing stress. Ed Stimpson Jr. did an artical in MR in the 1980's about using PC Ties, you should read it. Brian Ellerby used the closure rail as a flexable rail. A gap was cut near the frog in the closure rail then he spiked only two ties and soldered the point ends to the PC throw bar. Either method works with out the failures you describe. I have been using a 40 watt iron and haven't delamated any PC Tie. My trick is to use liquid rosin solder flux in making the joint. Only heating enough to make the joint. Paul

You can see lots of them in picture of British trackwork. In my case, I have built several turnouts with curved frogs on my layout and there will be more. You should consider trying to build your own turnouts, it’s not that hard, and a lot cheaper than commercial or custom made turnouts. It also allows you to do things you couldn’t fit in using just commercial turnouts. If you ever get to see Dick Karnes’ layout; you will know what I mean. In my own case I have a dual gauge curved turnout, immediately followed by a curved crossing on the diverging end. Last month, I built an asymmetrical wye turnout, where the two routes are a different angle; if I had used a standard turnout, I would have had to put a jog in the track. That one was easy, it was only standard gauge. And if you don’t think the prototype builds funky trackwork, I can show you pictures of a dual gauge stub switch with a dual gauge crossing through it. Two of the rails cross through a frog. Dave Heine Is there such a thing as a curved frog? I have at least 2 sets of curved crossovers in mind. I can easily live with the slightly oversized bolt details if needed. Given I will probably need 10 new turnouts tops for this rail making something new would be a huge effort. I will update my decision once Don T or Charlie Leonard see the castings. Thank You, Bill Lane
{S-Scale List} Re: Standardization of wheels......
I find this discussion flawed as the dwg of a wheel set still uses a Back to Back dimension. Back to Back has nothing to do with a correctly gaged wheel set! It is Check gage that is most Important with the track and wheel check equal to each other inorder to have derailment free track work. You can have mulitple wheel sizes work on the same track IF they use the same check gage. That includes the shitty looking flyer wheel sets. I use code 100, 93 88 wheels on my railroad all work perfectly as they all have the same check gage. There is no excuse for having three different wheel contours on the same engine. Re: {S-Scale List} Track Switches
I wonder why the stand that moves the points of a switch is called a Switch Stand. It is not call a turnout stand, so why call a switch a turnout. Pet pieve of mine. Why don't people build a switch? It is so easy. You do need PC ties. You can build to a #'d size or you can make it fit what you need. As long as your equipment will go around the radius, you can build a switch to that radius. I have built switches from 24 Radius up to 48 Radius. All at my work bench then installed on the layout. Remember, #'d switches require your layout to be adjusted to the switches but if you build to the radius/curve you need then you build the switch to the layouts needs. This shortens the lead length required of the switch. This pratice was used by the EBT and WPYR as both built their own switches to their needs. The White Pass had a gauntlet switch with the points on the ground and the frog on the warf. This kept the trucks from driving accross the points. I think this is like a doctor removing tonsils through one's nose! Anyway I've now inserted the new unit, but I'm having trouble getting electrons to move through the wires. When I get that solved, I've got to relay a few inches of track and I'll once again have a long 30' siding in operation. A photo of the new ramp next to the old one is in my PhotoTraxx photo album. I have an under the track uncoupler that works without any modification using Kadee 802s. I will have a demo track at the O Scale west this Thursday in Santa Clara. I'd like to try something, but don't have the part.. If an HO switch track were partially disassembled and mounted vertically between the rails of an S scale track, would the frog be strong enough to uncouple cars? If the frog rail were to be weighed down some, would it fall back down or would you have to flip the switch to raise/lower it? It'd be a fairly large cavity to hollow out for the mechanism to fit, but nearly invisible afterwards, the remaining frog rail could be painted to match your roadbed. I even thought about using an N scale switch frog, but don't know if it'd be strong enough to lift AF compatable couplers. If I had the cash, I'd go magnamatic, but I don't. If anyone has a few small scale switches, let me know if this can work. Other cost-saving uncoupler ideas also welcomed. I'm sure we could all use a few more uncoupling spots on our layouts that don't cost a fortune. Yahoo! Groups Links http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/

{S-Scale List} S Scale NASG/NMRA track gauge
I have been trying to not get into this discussion, but! I submitted RP-3 RP-4 dimensions and they were passed by the NMRA in 1980. Those dim allowed the use of a common frog by S and Sn3 track work and using a code 110 wheel with a S track gage of 4' 8.5. I was told by then pres of the NASG that I was full of it and didn't know what I was talking about. Now comes along the NASG and changes my dim by only 0.003 so they can claim ownership of my work. This did not make me happy. Then the NASG put out a statement that the NMRA finally joined them in accepting the NASG standards. More likely the NASG joined the 1980 RP 34. The 1980 wheel size was a code 135 wheel or a 'Oh my god' size flyer wheel. Flyer used a 4' 8 track gage. Not a scale dim. The NASG has finally accepted 4' 8.5 as track gage. The NASG came out with a standards gauge and I am thankful for that effort. There is no need of two org. doing the same work. Blasting an org. for not making a gauge when one existed is small thinking in my mind. Be thankful that both org. are working for the same end, interchangability! That means that you can take your equipment to another S scaler's layout and have a reasonble expectation of running on that layout without problems if both of you use the same check gauge. Now we have the Proto 64 eliteist coming into the game. They are after complete scale wheel size and track work thus throwing out interchangability out the window again. I guss we have to make room for everybody and the way they want to model. My thoughts Paul

Re: {S-Scale List} Re: NWSL Wheels
All: I have listened to this for some time and the correct answer is the check gage for the wheel set(reguardless of contour) must equal the check gage for the track!! {S-Scale List} Re: Code Wheels
Code 93 is what PBL has in thier Sn3 trucks. They are 26 in dia. The flanges are slightly larger. A compromise between code 110 and code 88. When you use the same check gauge for wll the different Code wheels using the largest flange as master then all the different sizes will work. If you set the check gauge for the smallest flanges then you could incure a problem or two. I prefer to have all wheels work on my layout. Only the rivet counters care. Remember any one that uses the same check gauge can operate on my layout the reverse is not true of a Proto XX layout. The premise of the NMRA and NASG is to have equipment from one layout work on some ones else's layout or interchange of equipment. The elitest in Proto XX don't want to interchange with every one else. Remember the basic difference is only check gage between Proto XX and the accepted hobby standards of the NMRA and NASG. {S-Scale List} Log Dimensions
All: There is no such thing as narrow gage logs or standard gage logs! A tree is a tree reguardless of diameter. Some trees are 20' in height varing to 350' + in height. So log dia varies with the height of the tree while standing. Also the is no such thing a a narrow gage building. Paul Ed, What are standard gauged logs? Bill Bill A standard gauged log (on the Mighty NYC) is the trunk (aka log) when cut from a standard gauged tree. Now for those still questioning things in the narrow vs. standard forest, I can only add that if the overall appearance of a log is pretty much what you want on a standard gauged car, then it qualifies as a standard log. On the other hand, a narrow log is just that -- too narrow. Got all that? This concept can also be used effectively to define standard rocks, standard girders, standard rivers, standard mountains, and so forth. The application of this concept goes far beyond mere measurement and division by 64. It is a step forward for all mankind. SmilesEd L. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: {S-Scale List} Frog question
Bob: What you describe is not the fault of the switch. It is the fault of an incorrect check gauge of the wheel sets. I find most modeler's blame the track switch when something shorts instead of finding out that the wheel check is not properly set. For me I build all my own switches built to the proper check gauge and check each every wheel set to make sure that the check gauge is properly set. After doing both I do not have a shorting problem you describe. Paul --- On Wed, 6/8/11, Robert Frascella frasc...@gmail.com wrote: From: Robert Frascella frasc...@gmail.com Subject: Re: {S-Scale List} Frog question To: S-Scale@yahoogroups.com Date: Wednesday, June 8, 2011, 1:14 PM I agree with Paul to a certain extent that DCC Friendly is an HO marketing gimmick, but in S-scale it was a different experience for me. When I first converted to DCC I did so by buying SHS locos already DCC equiped. My existing turnouts were solid frogs and the electrical gap was at the points. Everything ran flwalessly. It was not until I started converting my older locomotives to DCC that I realized the advantage of having an isolated frog. I have two steamers that were built using SSLS drivers that were made to a slightly different gauge and the driver wheels themselves were thicker than the more recent s-scale wheels. In addition, one of the two locomotives is a rigid frame 2-10-0 with 4 of the 5 drivers flanged and everytime it took the diverging route of a turnout, it would short against the switch point. In the old days of DC there was usually enough momentum to carry the locomotive past the short. But with DCC as Bob explained, it's a different story. So as much as a pain as it was to isolate all of my turnout frogs, it solved the problem for me. Thanks guys: the input about switches is great. It makes me believe that my 40 year old premise is still correct. There are No, none, comically made switches that are made correctly! I use three sizes of wheels. Code 110, 93 and 88. for my Sn3 equipment. All three sizes use the same check Gage and work just fine. This is why you must use the same Check Gage with different code wheel sets. I can't afford to buy and use comically made switches. It cost me about a $1.00 to build a switch and 20 minutes of my time. Oh yes, I do not use Fastracks jigs, They just slow me down. I have been a proponent of using PC ties since 1966. If you are using 85' passenger cars then you would need 43 min radius curves including switches. You can make your own switches very easly with PC Ties, carbon paper, a sheet of 20 lb bond paper and a section of flex track. NMRA RP 11 says a # 6 switch should work.?. I recommend going with a 43 radius switch. They will take more real estate but they will work better while backing the long cars. Part of the problem was due to a S curve coupled with those turnouts. I think we still have them on the long passing siding that you built. They seem to be doing okay. I still have 3 or 4 on my layout but that many have been torn out and replaced. The funny thing about the #6 is all the room they take. There is something to say for flat panel kits. For one thing you can mold different ends, sides and roofs. {S-Scale List} Comparing wheel treads, some history
All: I was the Sn3 Standards Chairman from 1979-1982. I developed the S standard for use with the code 110 wheel. Which became RP3 and RP4 in 1980. See the 1980 NMRA Special Bulletin. I was told by the NASG president at the time that I didn't know what I was talking about. The NMRA wheel size for S at that time was the code 135 which had the same size flange as the code 110 wheel. The code 135 wheel could still be used with my RP 3/4 if the S track gage was widened to 4' 8.5. As far as I know no one want to accept the wider track gage as it would iterate the Flyer people. That is the reason I was given anyway. The NASG had to change my RP 3/4 a little to claim they came up the their standards. They changed the flange way from 0.053 to 0.050 and recalculated the check gauges to claim authorship. S standard gagers at the time didn't even like the code 135 wheel set. Now we have the Flyer wheel set, the code 110 wheel set and the almost scale wheel proto 64. As I call it the code 88 wheel set. The code 110 88 won't work on the flyer track. The flyer wheels the code110 wheelset won't work on the code 88 track. And the code 88(proto 64) won't work on the code 110 track. Why? Because, they all use different check gages. Note the code 88 wheel set will work with the code 110 wheel sets IF they use the same check gage. I use three wheel sizes, code 110, code 93 and code 88 for Sn3. They all use the same check gage and work equally well. When the car is on the track it is very hard to tell which car has what wheel size. I hope this has given some insight on what has transpired over the years. To: S-Scale@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, January 23, 2011, 8:09 AM I don't have the NMRA recommended practices documents in front of me, but my recollection is that RP-25 is not scale dependent at all. in other words, a code 110 wheel with contour conforming to RP-25 would have the same profile whether used in S or HO. Would be glad to be corrected by evidence. The word contour is used to describe the various parameters that define the shapes of the tread and flange, and the curve (fillet) that connects them, along with the angle of the tread and the relative dimensions of the component parts of the profile of the wheel. Oh, and by the way, all model railroaders owe a huge debt of gratitude to those pioneers who devised the NMRA track and wheel standards and recommended practices--we are reminded of it every time a piece of rolling stock successfully traverses a section of track! RP25 contour is not scale specific. But the flange dimensions, and to some degree the wheel width, are. Therefore an HO RP25 wheel is going to have a smaller flange contour than an S RP25 wheel. You have to pull up the different standards tables for the wheels you're comparing and check the different standards to see if they will be compatible. The NASG and the NMRA standards are all available online if you go to their sites. HO RP25 wheels are going to differ from BOTH S scale standards, but will be much closer to the Proto64 standards. The various codes in RP25 are not scale-specific, except that you have to find a code that works with the S3 and S4 dimensions you're using. Re: {S-Scale List} Comparing wheel treads.
Jim: RP 25 is a Recommended Practice for wheel contour. In PR 25 there are several sizes of contours which Code 110 is listed. RP 25 has nothing to do with wheel diameter only with the tread contour. A code 88 wheel is almost perfect size for S scale contour. NWSL sells a 33 code 110 for S scale. I have a 26 dia code 88 wheel set for Sn3. So to answer your question: a code 110 will have the PR 25 contour. Its the same wheel. {S-Scale List} Comments
Ed: These guys don't want to have make something. They just want to buy and put on the layout and see it work. From what I have read they won't strip a car, repaint it then decal it to get what they want. They would rather complain that no manufacture doesn't make what they want one of. I use ground throws at the edge of the layout and make my own contacts. Nobody has to reach across the layout to throw a switch. I am having harp switch stands made that will operate for pointed or stub switches so the operators can see the route selected. I use DCC with frog juicers. Stub switches are better for a layout because no shorting can occur and are easier to make. Also no adjustments are required. In the process I noticed that three items, a leather worker's awl, some machinist's squares and my CA applicators were all among the missing. Who knows? The awl I can replace with some scalpels and either replace the squares locally or from Micro-Mark. The CA applicators, however, are a different thing. These are 1/4 dowels with sewing needles stuck in their ends and the eyes cut approximately in half so I can transfer CA from a puddle on a ceramic tile to the glue point.
