big boxcar was RE: {S-Scale List} Modern (post 1980) freight equipment?
So I dug out one of the large boxcars I'd mentioned, origin unknown although it could be one of the Lionel O27 cars Tom mentioned. In S scale it is about 54.5 feet long, almost 15 feet high and 11 feet wide. The opening for the door is just over 12 high and 11 feet wide. I held it up beside a DPH FMC moden boxcar. It looked just a bit wider, definitely taller but not unmanageable (it could be cut down a bit) The pattern on the roof negates any point in trying to cut it to narrow it. Also it has these huge door tracks that would have be carved off along with cast on ladders etc and the door space filled in . Mite be best to make it a plug door. I have some old Quality Craft castings for that. Any suggestions or has anyone tried this?cheers Alex Binkley To: S-Scale@yahoogroups.com From: t.haw...@comcast.net Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2013 13:00:05 -0400 Subject: Re: {S-Scale List} Modern (post 1980) freight equipment? - Original Message - From: kf...@ameritech.net . . . . . . . Re: {S-Scale List} Modern (post 1980) freight equipment?
I guess that my point is more that until the overall attitude toward modern (mid 60's to present) modeling in S Scale changes, things will never get better. There can no longer be a it's good enough attitude. There are so many things that could change the entire view of the scale. However, with manufacturing being so short sighted, things aren't being produced. A few things could and would turn this scale to one that is respected and not viewed as just toy train modeling. Jimmy Simmons is making things in S Scale, because he see a bright future for the scale and people are buying his products. Newer locomotives and freight cars are needed and will sell, but they wont unless they are produced. Producing things that are limited to a very small modeling market are not what is needed. A modern release needs to span decades and be able to appeal to a host of modelers. i.e the PS4750 cuft 3 bay covered hopper. first built in the late 60's and still on nearly every railroad today. These are everywhere. Something like that, or even a more modern 50' high cube box. bill your gon is a good model, but not an overwhelmingly popular one in real life. Pullman Standard Gondolas are far more prevalent than the Evans ones. I see these every day. We get at least 20 PS's to 1 Evans. Maybe a new PS gon would help to. Things to think about. Thanks for the compliment Tom. I have several hicube O sale cars in a box somewhere. Had the idea of taking the center of one of them but haven't gotten around to it. If anyone is interested I will check the dimensions again.cheers Alex Binkley To: S-Scale@yahoogroups.com From: t.haw...@comcast.net Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2013 13:00:05 -0400 Subject: Re: {S-Scale List} Modern (post 1980) freight equipment? - Original Message - From: kf...@ameritech.net . . . . . . . {S-Scale List} Modern (post 1980) freight equipment
Ken, First welcome to the group. As you can see I am not modeling the 80s but I am in S for 26 years now. If you are doing 80s and newer it takes a bit to find out where things are. I have said that we are not in S Scale because it was easy! You have to work a bit for your art. For the most part Des Plaines is the supplier of the most and most accurate modern rolling stock. They have a SD45 in the works but no known release date. They have the Coal Porter, Husky Stack and a boxcar. Wide vision cabooses were brass and also from S Helper Service. There is the 2 new American Flyer diesels that you can get scale wheels for. I never thought I would be recommending AF to a Scaler but it is nice stuff. Sit back and relax. Absorb. S is about the journey not the destination. And people. So that is 2 main attractions to S. And the size so that makes 3 things Thank You, Bill Lane Modeling the Mighty Pennsy PRSL in 1957 in S Scale since 1987 See my finished models at: http://www.lanestrains.com/ http://www.lanestrains.com Look at what has been made in PRR in S Scale! Re: {S-Scale List} Modern (post 1980) freight equipment?
- Original Message - From: kf...@ameritech.net Hi, all - I'm looking at dipping my toe into S with a modest sized modern urban switching layout. One issue I'm having is finding appropriate modern cars. Here we go again on one of our recurring themes - lack of modern rolling stock in S. The 3 or 4 of us who try to do modern modelling in S don't bring it up that often because the rest of the S scalers seem happy back in the horse, buggy, steam loco days, and find our concerns irrelevant. We even started a separate yahoo group for modern S modelling, but I haven't seen a post on it in a long time. Can anyone advise what might be available in the following categories?. . . . . . Mike Ostertag covered it pretty well. I assumed he omitted the rotary dump coal gondola and the double-stack car because they probably wouldn't fit into a modern urban switching layout . . . . . . . . . . * Center beam lumber flats. . . . . Lionel O27 has one that I've narrowed and lowered to make an S scale car that looks OK from a distance. * Modern tank cars of all kinds - corn syrup, DOT 111 - type cars, etc. When Mr Berendtsen discontinued his Iron Rail Models production he sold remaining tank car inventory to Hoquat. I have no idea how much remains. Wanna buy a Dow chemical tank car? I forget what it carries, can look if you're interested. Tom Hawley -- Lansing Michigan

Hi again -- You might contact Dave Branum at c...@ix.netcom.com to see what he has done to acquire modern rolling stock (kit bashing). He is not on this list any longer, so I haven’t heard from him for a while, but he has done some great modeling... Good luck!
