RE: Advice requested

2018-01-15 Thread Jason Thacker
All the electronics have arrived, but when I connect it all up, there is no
video signal.

My disk light flashes on power up and when I push the f9 key, but no video
signal.

Is it possible I need a special SCART cable (I have seen one on eBay)?

I am running out of ideas as to what could be wrong.

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks to some generous relatives, I have had my Sam shipped over from the UK
to the USA (where I now live).

Voltage is not a concern, step up converters are cheap on Amazon. But I would
like to be able to display the image from the Sam on my TV and unfortunately
SCART sockets were never put on American TVs.

What would be the best option for converting the SCART to an HDMI connector?
Would something like this be OK?

I don’t know if this would be any use, but I did see this Spectrum emulator
that runs within XNA on the XB360

http://www.codeplex.com/zx360

Perhaps that may give somebody the start they need. (Personally I hope so!)

Wanted: Atom Interface

2005-05-18 Thread Jason Thacker
Does anybody know where I can buy one of these using PayPal or by cash etc.
anywhere in the UK?

I did did try to order one from Yarek Adamski's site, but after having
Moneybookers ask me for scans of my credit card, passport etc. gave up in
disgust. I realise that due to PayPal refusing to support Poland he doesn't
really have any choice, but there are certain things I absolutely will not
do and one of those is handing over every bit of information necessary for
the copying of my credit card, including my signature and photograph!

I am hoping (praying) that somebody can help me with this.

Cheers,

Jason Thacker

RE: Wanted: Atom Interface

2005-05-18 Thread Jason Thacker
That would be great if you could Colin, I was going to get one of your CF
adapters to accompany it any way :)

Do you have any idea how much the Atom would cost? (I know the price for the
CF adapter)

Also, would you know the maximum size of CF card that could be plugged in? I
was thinking about buying a 1GB card.

You can email me direct at jason(at)koriel(dot)net if you would prefer to
continue this conversation off-list.

Thanks again!

As Edwin (the designer of the Atom) released the schematic for it on his
website, i'd be happy to solder one up for you as a custom build to help you
out.

Ideas for the ultimate emulator :)

2005-02-12 Thread Jason Thacker
Hi guys,

I have been putting down some of my (admittedly random) thoughts on how to
get the best possible emulation experience and I have weeded out some of the
best at

http://www.koriel.net/EmulatorIdea.htm

I would really appreciate it if some of you would deign to look at the page
and even (Shock! Horror!) give me some ideas for how this may be improved in
some way. Who knows, maybe somebody with the skills to build these things
(i.e. not me!) may even take some of them on board!

RE: Ideas for the ultimate emulator :)

2005-02-12 Thread Jason Thacker
I take you also think that games consoles don't have a place, after all they
only emulate what is already available in the arcade.

This idea behind this was to allow us the fond memories of lying on our
stomachs in front of the TV playing those old favourites, as for buying a
new version of (for example) a Sam Coupé, have you seen how rarely they come
up on e-bay? Most of the people who would want a Sam will probably never be
able to get one, as the originals are either in the bin or a treasured part
of somebodies collection.

As for having nothing to do with the Sam Coupe, there is already a healthy
discussion on SimCoupe running on this list, so why not look at other
possible ways in which a Sam, or any other machine for that matter, may be
emulated? SimCoupe may be (and is) a great emulator, but I am sure that
there would be room out there for other options.

I think you should discuss it off the list. It has nothing to do with Sam
Coupe. (And surely there is a usenet group usable for this discussion.) And,
I personally don't like the idea of creating a new hardware nonsense to
emulate something you can either emulate on a standard computer (PC), or
buy an original hardware at eBay.

I like your idea. I had a couple of thoughts

The main processor is a 400MHz+ XScale CPU running embbedded Windows CE.
This allows many emulator writers to take advantage of their current
 skills in Win32 development systems.
This CPU would also be powerful enough to emulate most, if not all,
 8-bit and 16-bit machines.

How would this compare, roughly, to an x86 processor in terms of
processing power? To emulate an OCS / ECS Amiga takes some serious CPU
cycles while AGA is still sluggish without some seriously powerful PC
hardware even now. The custom ICs takes some conversion time due to it's
 use
of planer gfx and not chunky-RGB.

This would be nice to emulate PlayStation 1 and N64 stuff. I like the
use of SD. Maybe Compact Flash might be a possible alternative as well
 if necessary. (See M/B below).

If CPU power wasn't hugely important, you could probably build a
slightly larger, but still silent version, using the ITX boards from
 VIA, like this one

Yes, I've seen it (and
run it) and admit mine is a similar idea, just packaged up in a portable
hardware format that I could use in my living room :). I don't see any reason
why the system itself couldn't be based on MESS, just loading modules on demand
from SD Card.

It had to happen, after nearly thirty years of using all sorts of computers
I saw a Sam and said There is an 8-bit machine I want to develop for!.

One snag, I haven't got a clue how! I have a Sam on the way courtesy of
E-Bay, but no manuals :( I am desperately trying to track down online
resources for teaching programming on the Sam, I haven't had too much
success so far, but does anybody have any ideas where I could find this type
of information?

Thanks!
