Your main problem is that your e-mail address is dependant on your current
ISP. Use a private e-mail address, and don't change it with ISP.

(This is something like if you would change your real name whan you move,
since you had to use real name of that man, who lived in your new flat

I don't know exactly what the Amstrad PSUs contained, but in the Sam PSU

Re: Hello to everybody !

2001-01-03 Thread Robert Wilkinson

Hi,

As I just subscribed to this list, I would like to introduce me first.
I'm an electronic engineer, writing from Brazil. I'm 27 years
old, work for the auto parts industry, and I have been a Spectrum
user since 1987 (actually, it was the TK90X, a Brazilian clone of the
Spectrum +).
Back in 87, my dream was to have a Sam.

Do you mean 1989 ?

 I know that some of
them came to Brazil at that time by the hands of some game pirates.
We could not import those machines at that time because there was a
law that does not allow us to buy imported computers, so most Amigas,
Macs, Commodores and even some Ataris wer bought by not so legal
ways (this includes my Amiga 1200)
I've downloaded SimCoupe for my Mac, and it was really nice
to see the dream machine emulated on my monitor.
Two things then came up in my mind: First, I don't know how

to use the Sam.

Use the Sam like a Spectrum, until you get to know it better, Sam supports a
complete
subset of Spectrum Basic with enhancements of it's own.

The basic is different from the Speccy,

Memory up to 65535 is much as the Spectrum.

and I could not find any manual.. Second, I still want a Sam !!

Secondhand Sams are as rare as rocking horse droppings
so use the Emulator.

So, if anybody has a second Sam to sell, or knows were I can
get one, I would appreciate very much.

 Best Regards,

 Marcelo

This is probably your first real SAM newbie in around 7 years. Well I
confess Im not
a total newbie I used a SAM for 4 years writing simple assembly language
programs
using a cross compiler and dropping them on the SAM. I then discovered
the wonders
of high level languages like C,C++ and OAK ( an early Java ) when I
started at a
large corporation ( IBM ) and bought myself a 'Nix workstation. Anyway -
why all the
rambling. I finally managed to use a search engine that returned results
on my old
favourite the Sam which has been gathering dust for nearly 6 years. I
was never
involved in anything that resembled a Scene so I was pleasantly amazed
there were people still using it.

To cut a long story short Ive missed using the wee beastie and am back
to see if
there are more than three people using the machine who might appreciate
a few up to
date utilities and games being dropped on it now I only program in my
leisure time
on machines I want to ( rather than working late on work software ).

So what are the tools. Ive long since lost all the disks I had for SAM
apart from
Prince of Persia ( which I never managed to get out of one room on ).

I had:
Flash
GamesMaster
some sound thing
Prince of Persia
Some vertical scrolling Mode 2 shoot em up
An assembler on the spectrum ( Hisoft rings a bell but I might just be
thinking of DevPac )
101 games I had dissassembled, modified and ported the graphics for ( my
own amusement ) including.

Carrier Command ( ZX ),
Head Over Heels ( Amiga graphics ),
A sub thing from Hewson Software I think,
Jet Pac,
Renegade.

If I had known there was a scene magazine ( I had never heard of Fred
can you believe it ) I might have
asked if people wanted to see these but I was a little cautious because
I had clearly infringed copyright
even if for my own amusement.

Ive got a great idea from the game engine up ( rather than starting on
the graphics ;-) ) and am drafting it at the moment in C on my Amiga (
sitting to the right of the PC and to the left of the RS6000 ). Im
making sure the gaming window works in 192x192 and has a 32x192 panel to
the right for status, inventory and the like. If any of you has an Amiga
emulator I should be able to send a binary before I start on the SAM
version ( I need to get the wee beastie working again! ).

Anyway Im going to dig the old machine out this weekend and see if I can
find some
development utilities online to help me get started. It should be in
perfect
condition with the mouse, parrallel and serial interface and the like. I
may even be
able to get it working with a SCART monitor if I can lay my hands on
one.

Ideally I would not like to go back to Z80 assembler although Blinky has
already helped me out by sending me a link to COMET which looks rather
excellent. If there is a C compiler that
produces the goods ( even in cross compiler mode ) that would be ideal.
I remember
playing around with something called GamesMaster and the Sound Machine
but they both
seemed a little slow.

So, is there interest? Or would I be writing for my self ( not a problem
)?
Are the ulitilities someone can point me at?

I call myself a newbie as I have long since forgotten how to drive the
machine. I
remember something about F9 but thats it.

All the best,

Dave.

Outwrite was written by me years before I got a PC, the only thing I had to go

Also it supports national characters, and converts them to PC format (using

Also it supports more than Outwrite/Tasword file types (Desktop, Text

incl. styles line bold, underline etc.

btw. Outwrite is the most stupid text editor for Sam Coupe.
Doesn't support 512kb RAM, doesn't support variable width character fonts,
(desn't support ANY

I understand that Tasword was made in 1983, so it is simple. But why

I think I've come up with a fairly practical method of
making it possible to run speccy 128 programs on the SAM...
it involves a plug-in box which has a 32K ram, a z80, and
a certain amount of logic (and perhaps a sound chip). The
question is - is there any point pursuing it? It wouldn't
be compatible with the +2a/+3.

Why do more spectrum owners not use the SAM? is it because
of it not being 128 compatible, or is it because they can't
use their existing spectrum hardware?

You could remove the old ribbon connector and put pins in. Or even
better, if a connector can be found with the same pinout as the original,
then, as long as a mating plug can be found. that could do it.

Yes, I'd been thinking about this and flicking through various
catalogues - the only problem is that most connectors from place
like RS and Maplin seem horrendously expensive. Anyway, I'll
progress the design and then experiment with fitting it to my
SAM.

Do you intend to supply the PCB or the completed interface.

There's one chip that costs about a tenner in single quantities,
or about six pounds in 25+ quantities. And it's from a place
that charges a fair bit for postage and packaging - so for
individuals to build their own would be pretty expensive (plus
they'll need a PIC programmer). Also, I want to make sure that
I can shift 25 units if I go ahead and make the investment. Perhaps,
then, the best thing for me to do would be to finish the Speccy
interface too, to increase the chance of shifting all 25 chips,
and selling the SAM version as a complete unit or in kit form.
I'll still post the circuit on a web page somewhere, but realistically
it won't be economical for anyone to build just one for themself.

I'm certainly interested in the interface and soldering to the Sam PCB is no
hassle for me.

I'd need to look inside the Sam to check out the pinouts, but as a guess
the hole spacing is probably a standard size and a look at vero-board
connectors might throw something up.

I have had an IBM-PC keyboard interface working on my SAM
for a long time now (about 3 years) but I haven't made it
available because 1) I didn't have access to a PCB designer
(but I do now!) and 2) I didn't think there was enough interest
to make it viable. One of the components needs to be bought
in 25+ quantities in order to get it to a reasonable price, and
I dount that there are 25 SAM owners wanting such a device. The
interface could be easily modified to work with the spectrum,
so perhaps making a speccy variant would help make numbers up
to 25.

Was away for a couple of days there, so it was nice to see a bit of
activity on the list. There was some talk of a SAM website and I thought
you might like to know about the site I'm putting together. I've been
working on it, albeit slowly, for the last few weeks. Although the URL
is www.samcommunity.co.uk and will of course have a section about the
magazine itself, the rest of the site includes - an intro to the SAM,
SAM emulation, latest news (taken from the magazine), a documentation
section (manuals, technical articles etc), a rewritten SAM FAQ, and the
File Library. This last bit is probably going to be of most interest. As
anyone who reads the magazine would know, I've been putting together a
library of SAM software that has been declared PD or freeware by its
authors. I've already contacted some of the main publishers of SAM
software in an attempt to get permission to distribute. Readers of the
mag who don't have net access send off with a list of the items they
want, and I send them back via floppy but obviously with the website,
they will be available as a download. I'm continually adding stuff to
the File Library in an attempt to make it into a WOS style site and I
will always make every effort to contact both the author(s) of the
software and its publishers. If permission is denied then obviously I
will not put those items in the File Library but if getting a reply has
proved impossible after all reasonable effort, I think it would be fair
to put these items in the File Library. Obviously if I'm contacted and
asked to remove the items, I will do so.

The reason I'm posting this info is just so that I don't step on
anyone's toes who is working on a similar site. This is not some ego
thing so if anyone is actually working on something similar, please get
in touch so that we can work out some way to almagamate our work.

Hopefully the site will be up over the next week or so. If anyone has
any stuff they'd like to see on the site, let me know.

Gavin

copyright
to the Lerm assembler belongs to them, if so then contact me NOW, if no
contact is made to me within one week from today, then I will allow
The assembler and the Z80 Toolkit to go up on the Web. I wrote those
programs and have no written contract with anyone, although I have
heard
that Persona was given the rights by Fred, who obtained them from Lerm.
These are my programs, and as I say, contact me and we can talk, or
 forever hold your peace.

(3) Hello Wo. I must use the emulator as space is restricted at my location.
I feel that the Wincoupe could help to breathe new life into Sam,
bearing
in mind that you are hard pressed to buy a Coupe today. There must
be lots of Spectrum owners that would like to move up to the Sam, but
alas, cannot. I'm sure that given time and effort by the creators of
Wincoupe, the sound problem would be solved.

The Wincoupe offers to be the Sams salvation, and could attract new

The Manual on the disk is for version 1 of Outwrite. I don't have the manual
for version 2 on floppy.
I do have a manual for version 2. If you want one contact me off list.

Entering printer codes for Ver 2 is different than Ver 1.. Read on.
The printer codes are easy to put in.
If you look on the disk you should see 2 printer drivers. These load up as
text files.
Use either one,Edit it and put your codes in using the program itself.
Make sure that insert mode is turned off. Also make sure that there is at
least one complete
blank line below the end of the printer file. Cursor down and press return.
This will put in an end of
file marker (invisible) Place the cursor at the begining of the driver, find
the Install option from
the drop down menu (not sure which one) and select it. If you did all of
this ok, then the codes are
now installed into the main M/C. You need to save the code from the options
menu

Outwrite Ver 2.0 file length is 45000 bytes.

Hope this helps.

I played Outwrite 2 for the first time over the weekend. Not a bad little

ZDE on Pro-DOS for all my text writing).

But, I need help setting up my printer for it. It's a HP DJ 4-something.
I've got all the printer codes for it but I can't seem to find a way of
sticking them in the program anywhere (assuming the manual on the disk
doesn't really correspond to the program much).

Oh, and the other problem is that all the text is printed right on the
left-hand edge of the paper rather than leaving a few characters for
the margin. I'm guessing that it has something to do with printer
initialisation. After all, this printer isn't exactly an Epson dot-
matrix... Where abouts in the program can I change this?

Is there still a 41000 character limit on version 2 of outwrite?

Hoping for help,
Justin.

It it re-arranging them to a 320x240 rectange in the top left of your

rectangle).
I've only seen that happen when DirectX wasn't exited after full-screen

Does it happen if you start WinCoupe, switch to full-screen, then switch
back to windowed mode with F9, and quit? The video change detection in
that
version is a bit too aggressive, as I noticed it won't even let you alt-tab

hehe! Try using fullscreen mode and making sure the 'accurate mode 3'

stretching,

Yeh! That did it. I did read the text file that came with Wincoupe, but
forgot once it was running.

Unfortunately you can't see the window title bar in fullscreen mode to know
the speed, so you'll have to guess how well it's running - on-screen
display is coming
soon to solve that!

I used my Morse code tutor to check how well it ran. It has an interupt
driven clock in it.
The program was written using a real Sam and the clock is pretty accurate,
least it is on my Sam.
In full screen mode and with mode 3 turned on, the clock loses 10 seconds
per minute. (approx)
Sound is a bit rough in this mode.

In full screen mode and with mode 3 turned off, The clock gains 4 seconds
per minute. (approx)
Sound is much better and the Tutor is useable.

What the maximum framerate do you get on the startup screen with the 1x1
window size and the 'frame skipping' set to 'none'?

In that mode I get a max of 22-24

In normal startup mode with colour bars showing I get 48-53
After Enter is pressed (colour bars gone, only cursor on screen) I get 22-25

Hope this helps..

Re: power thingies

Hi.

I've just checked the Amstrad supply, and the voltages, while they are
there, they are coming from different pins from the Sam supply.
Also the current ratings are different.

The supply is nothing special, and a good repair shop could fix it for
you, unless of course you need the modulator, and that is what has gone.

Good Luck.

Okay, since the actual request didn't get out (ta for confirming that,

A friend of mine in the Netherlands gave his SAM to his granddaughter a few

If anyone knows where I can get a proper PSU from, or has one they're

If you have two SAMs but don't wish to run them at the same time, I'll
make
you an offer for the spare power supply. Though Bob Brenchley has been
really
nice and
sent me a new power supply - SAM lead (just the other day actually) which
I
can fix at the power supply, I'm sure I'll only end up breaking it. And I'm
quite enjoying my SAM again now I've finally got past my previous sticking
point on Hexxagonia!

I haven't got the Secondhand Sam yet, and might not. But as for power
supplies. Fixing the lead should cause no problems. If you use a monitor and
not a TV, then building a supply with the right voltages should not be too
difficult either.
As a matter of interest, Amstrads CPC 6128 uses a power supply that looks
exactly like Sams supply, the only difference outwardly is the colour. I
suspect that MGT obtained said supplies and painted them.
Best look on the Boot sales for a CPC, they go at silly prices. In the
meantime, I have a CPC 6128, and will drag out the power supply and check
the pinouts and voltages, and let you know.

I would be interested in seeing your code, if you don't mind, ( I won't rip
it off though)

I thought I would at least offer to pass on an altered version of Andrew
Colliers dskman program which does away with the menu and then loads a .dsk
image file, throw a single file onto it
and save it again with a different name - all via the command line. I found
this infinitely less annoying than going through the dskman menu everytime
I've assembled a new version of the code and want to test it on SIM.

Yes please...

Outwrite is really great! I only saw version 2 when you released it, but
I'm
impressed with the improvement. Not least of all, the disappearance of that
menu you used to drop back to in-between using the main bit of the word
processor.

I have version 3 now. It only works on a 512k sam. Lots of the basic has
gone and been replaced with M/C.plus lots more features.. You're welcome to
a look if you like...

Thanks Gavin. Its nice to get an answer..

Be nice if Simcoupe was finished..

I mailed Bob Brenchley about some stuff I did for the Spectrum (only after I
queried a 64 col assembler I converted from 32 col version, and sent it to
him for a look see.),(only works on Lunters emulator) This only after I
queried wiring the printer interface internally and Bob B let me know I
could get one from format. I have a printer interface, so don't need a new
one dammit.
NO RESPONSE

I can code in M/C (Very basic) but have never coded sprites or graphics, and
don't even know where to start. ( my M/C is self taught.)
One Idea I have, is to program a train set, ie, You lay the track, put the
landscape in, and set the trains running. Signals and crossings have to be
included, as do changing points.Including new trains (freight or whatever
would also be an option) Just as if you had a real train set, set up in the
garden or loft. No strategy, No points to score, just a bog standard train
set. You play the part of the signal keeper. Ambitious EH!!!.
Well I would like to do it, but would need help. Once finished it would be
availabel FREE to anyone that wanted it. It probably w'ont happen, but I can
dream.(have done for a number of years).

I never took Blitz, and all of my Fred magazines were lost in a
catastrophie.

So If anyone wants to donate some start code and info and remain
commited,,, It might get started.
I want something to get my teeth into. Be prepared for lots of ...What.
I'm a good learner though.
Oh by the way, although I have a real Sam, This all needs to work on the
Simcoupe as well as a real Sam Why.?? Well, my Sam is ten years old, and
nothing lasts for ever, Simcoupe will, so long as I always have a PC running
Win 95 or Dos 6.2., and I always will. Stuff Win 98/2000 or beyond. I'm
staying where I am, It works...

As for your coding question, not being the best machine coder in the

game logic sit in the top 8k of a 32k pair of pages, and has 16 screens
which are all pageflipped together to scroll the background image. It *can*
be done (I've mocked up examples of it in the past, but never got around to

scrolling canyons if you do it right (but they're harder to write back to

backgrounds on the fly that way, between bad-guy waves...

Want to give it a shot?

Re: Sam Printer + keyboard interface.

1999-08-25 Thread Robert Wilkinson

.
It's a bit of hardware that lets you connect a PC keyboard to the
SAM and it mimics the SAM's keyboard (so it works with software
that reads the keyboard hardware directly rather than via the
ROM which is just about all the games software!)

I've had it working for a couple of years now, and I've been meaning
to make up a proper pcb for it for a while - it was originally going
to be after Christmas when I got my PC, but it's August and still
no PC! Hopefully not much longer now, though!

Andy

Ok.. So you connect the Sam to a PC keyboard.
What advantage does this give you.

I can only see that this would be useful if you needed to put the original
Sam circuit board into a bigger case to allow for add-ons.

Please enlighten me.

Nothing in itself... but if your SAM keyboard is broken, or
you don't find it very comfortable to type with, then you've
got the choice of any PC keyboard you fancy. And, as you say,
it increases the chance of you putting a SAM into a desktop

Whenever I make a hardware gizmo for my SAM I always use veroboard
with the tracks going away perpendicularly to the rows of pins. Then
I pull out all the euroconnector pins that I don't need (they come
out of the plastic housing quite easily with a good tug with some
pliers). That quite often leaves only 1 pin to solder to each track
(there would be 2 otherwise and you'd have to break the veroboard
in between them) and those that are left can quite often be bent
to reach a spare track (or wired with a short bit of insulated wire).
It would save the number of wires you needed, too, if you eliminate
some of the signals! Are IDC euroconnectors available, I wonder?

Andy

I have some connectors that are similar, but instead of 3 rows with the
middle row empty, they only have two rows. These are made by Vero and I
should think they probably do the type's fitted to the Sam.

What is the keyboard project you spoke about... Sounds interesting.

A *short* extender cable shouldn't be too problematic, but the
euroconnectors
aren't exactly easy to connect to. I'd be tempted to move the whole thing
inside the SAM case - there aren't actually that many wires to add. The
printer interface only uses d0, d1, d2, d3, d4, d5, d6, d7, /RD, /WR,
+5v, 0v (these can all be taken off of a spare disc drive slot) and
PRINTL which you will have to pick off the main pcb somewhere. Most
MGT devices drive a line called BUSEN or something when they are
accessed, but you don't need to worry about wiring this through (it
was for a buffered SAMBus which never materialised...)

Andy

Thanks Andrew.

On thinking about it, the signals travel through the Sambus so should be ok
through a short extender cable. The euroconnectors can be soldered to a
piece of veroboard and the cable taken off on either side of the board. ie
piece of board 5 holes deep, remove the middle track and place the connector
across it.
