Re: [Samba] Samba Upgrade
If you could find a spare server box somewhere, it is always nice to have the luxury of building a test machine to trial a new system before finally pulling the plug on a reliable known-to-work system. AFAIK samba 3.0.4 is the latest stable version, most new distros now include it (eg Slackware 10 which was released a couple of weeks back). If you're going to upgrade, you may as well go for the latest stable version as a general rule. I have Samba 2.2.7a, as shipped with RH 9.0, running on a server, supporting about 25 W2k clients. The linux kernel is running in SMP mode to use the Hyper-Threaded Pentium-4 CPU. I have tried to create the simplest SAMBA setup possible, so have no LDAP, ACLS, etc. The 25 w2k clients are all architects running CAD software and working on a major building design, so I cannot afford down time, nor unexpected server behaviour. The 2.2.7a Samba has been the epitome of reliability and efficiency. However, I really need to enable recycle bins, to better recover accidentally deleted files. I have tried to enable the recycle VFO in 2.2.7a, but with no success, so I am considering upgrading to Samba 3.x. My current plan is to shut down the SAMBA services, backup the /etc/samba directory, uninstall samba 2.2.7, install SAMBA 3.x, copy my /etc/samba back in, and restart samba. Q: Is there any advice that people would offer me on this? Q: Is there a particular version of Samba that I should upgrade to in preference to others? Q: Is there a simple HOW-TO on the recycle-bin VFO for 2.2.7? Q: Are there any additional procedures I should employ in the upgrade? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Cheers! [Fwd: Re: [Samba] What happened to this list?]
Interesting question. I'm not complaining, I find that the Linux/OSS world is in general amazingly helpful, and people do find answers on this list. However, I must say that several of my own questions here never got answered, and many others go unanswered. The samba team is doing a fantastic job, but yes, this list does seem short of people who have the time or expertise to provide answers. Mark also has some useful advice on asking the right question. I rarely answer questions here because I simply don't know the answers, while on other lists I do help out as much as possible. My experience with samba is pretty limited, simple standalone PDCs using a tdbsam backend most of the time, on networks of maybe 10 clients. Part of the problem may be that, comparatively speaking, samba is a complex beast to configure and master, given that it requires expertise in so many diverse things (eg UNIX, all Windows versions, networking, security, file formats, the list goes on and on). Many lurkers here like myself may not feel confident about suggesting solutions. Dunno. Hmm, so there's another non-answer I suppose ... :-( Mick On Mon, 2004-07-19 at 21:11, Chris wrote: Hello. I have been having some major troubles lately with samba and winbind. The last 5 posts I made, no one has responded. I haven't needed this list in years, but it used to be very different. Is there another place a person can go to get help with samba? I have faithfully followed the docs and it is still not working right, and it is most frustrating. Re: [Samba] Need a working model of smb.conf for a PDC
Is that a smbpasswd or a tdbsam backend? I have 3.0.4 working as a PDC without pam or ldap, using tdbsam. I believe that tdbsam is the recommended way to go for new installations as of samba 3.x. What clients are you using? What problems are you having now? If so could you please send me a working copy of your SMB file (only core components needed, no need for shares or anything). [Samba] NT Domain login problem
I have set up an NT domain using samba 3.0.4 on Slackware 9.1 with Win XP clients. Security = user, samba is PDC and WINS server. I'm new to samba and working most things out as I go, but have one persistent problem: Some clients frequently refuse to log in to the domain, a situation that can only be remedied by, for example, logging in as local administrator on the XP machine, then logging back out and trying to log in to the domain again (usually successful the second time round). Is there some setting or configuration step I might have missed? [Samba] Newbie group mapping question
I'm wondering if, in a context where samba 3.0.4 is PDC for an NT domain with XP clients, it is necessary or at least normal practice to map most/all NT groups (eg Domain Admins, Domain Users) to unix groups? Also, I notice when I do 'net groupmap list' that there are not only Domain Admins, Domain Users and Domain Guests, but also plain Admins, Users and Guests. What is the significance of these two sets of groups (the Domain groups and the 'plain' groups), should I map to one or the other or both? Sorry, my knowledge of Windows is even less than my knowledge of Samba at this point in time. [Samba] pdbedit
I have a couple of questions about pdbedit. I am having trouble using pdbedit in shell scripts. First, on a freshly installed system with no-one in the tdbsam database, trying to add multiple machine accounts via a loop construct in a shell script fails with a message that the database can't be found/doesn't exist. I then added root manually just to get the system going, which solves that problem. Once the first user is added, my script seems to get stuck in an infinite loop trying to add the first machine, but I can add a machine manually. Is pdbedit usable in shell scripts? I understand that normal users need a password added, but I can't see why machine accounts can't just be added automatically. Does pdbedit have to be run manually for some reason? Is there some way of initialising the tdbsam database without manually adding a first user? [Samba] SIDs
I'm wondering where the three 10 digit numbers that make up an SID come from. In other words, the X's in the example below: S-1-5-21-XX-XX-XX-2202 Can these just be made up? Does every SID on a system have to have the same numbers in these positions? Re: [Samba] pdbedit
Sorry folks, a typo was causing the looping problem. I'd still like to know if pdbedit needs initialising in some way after installation, or if it is ready to go. It still looks like at least one user needs to be added manually before pdbedit can be used in a script. [Samba] local admin permissions
We have implemented an NT domain with samba 3.0.4 PDC on Slackware 9.1 and Win XP Pro clients. Everything is working nicely except for one issue. I haven't used Windows for years, so possibly I just don't understand something basic about Windows XP security ... Having logged in (to the domain), users are unable to perform tasks such as update certain files on the local system, for example to update anti-virus software or install a newer web browser or browser plug-in. Also, some applications run locally (eg MYOB) complain about not being able to open files they need (probably tmp files). I have added these users to a Unix domadm group and mapped this group to Administrators using 'net groupadd', to no apparent effect. How can I configure things so that users on Windows clients can perform the tasks described? Am I on the right track with 'net groupadd' etc? Does samba even have anything to do with this? In a nutshell, while I understand something about how samba restricts user access to resources on the samba server, does samba also dictate the permissions a user has on their local system? The local user permission settings appear to be being overriden by settings obtained from the samba server. Thanks, any ideas greatly appreciated. [Samba] Permissions
Setup: Samba 3.0.4 PDC on Slackware 9.1 Problem: Users on XP clients cannot update/delete files on their local machines, although a local administrator can. Question: Any ideas why this is happening? Is it something to do with Profiles being stored on the samba server? Thanks! [Samba] Can't join domain - new machine name
I have just implemented an NT Domain using samba 3.0.4 on Slackware 9.1, a very simple LAN with 4 or 5 clients. Clients: Win XP Pro. Everything looks OK so far, apart from this issue: I create machine accounts for existing client machines using their existing names ... works fine, they can join domain. Except that we want to rename the existing machines using a new consistent format (client1, client2, etc) If I create new machine accounts then try to join the existing client machines to the domain using the new names (ie I'm trying to change the clients name at the same time as I join it to the domain), I get an error about an RPC call failing. Any ideas? [Samba] samba 3.0.4 domain woes
G'day: Folks, I'm at my wits end trying to join a WIN XP Professional client to a samba 3.0.4 domain running on Slackware 9.1. I haven't used windows since Win 95 days and am not up to speed with it at all. Also, i've tried the O'Reilly Using Samba book (2nd edition), read the samba docs, and browsed the mailing lists but there is so much information I'm even more bamboozled than ever. I have some questions I hope someone might shed some light on for me: - Does pdbedit completely replace smbpasswd as an account creation tool? - Can I forget about mksmbpasswd.sh now? It doesn't appear to be included now anyway. - If i do away with WINS, lmhosts and broadcasts and go the DNS route, do I also need LDAP and Kerberos etc (the whole Active Directory show)? I get errors when trying to use DNS to resolve names, I know why (DNS SRV records), but I don't know if just adding those records will solve the problem without also doing LDAP and Kerberos. I have samba 3.0.4 set up and running. I can connect, authenticate and see shares locally from the server. I could also see the server name (NOT the domain name) from Win XP client using 'net view' for a while. I could never login in to the domain, and now Win XP is telling me the domain is unavailable. I've been at this for days (samba 3.0.3 on RedHat previously), with the samba server's availability, logging in and available shares all seemingly coming and going at random. I have valid user accounts, machine accounts, everything looks OK, but samba just won't do domains at all.
