[Samba] 2 users can't connect to samba.
I have a redhat9 box running samba 2.2.8a acting as a file server for about 12 computers. 10 are windows 2000, 1 XP-pro, and 1 Win98. 2 users are unable to connect every couple of days. [Samba] user name problem in samba 2.2.3a
I am running debian testing with samba 2.2.3a all users are XP/win2k some usernames are first and last. i.e. john smith So those with a 2 part username in windows have to enter a second username and password to access samba shares. How can I get samba to use these usernames? currently I have samba using just their first name and password as authentication. [Samba] logon problems with xp pro and samba 3.0 beta2-1 debian
I have recently setup samba as a file server for a small group this. this is my first time using samba 3.0 all clients are xp pro. some clients do not authenticate at logon, I am having samba do all the logon checks, no ldap or pdc sync. it's annoying and confusing the users when the have to enter in their username and password for the share each time they logon. I never had this problem before. is there something different I should be doing? RE: [Samba] New Samba Server
3ware makes great controllers, but you will be limited to the pci bus bandwidth for the raid arrays. instead of 8x40 I would look for the best cost/size ratio. I think 120GB hard drives can be found for around $100.00 (us) I'd put 3 in a raid5 array for performance. [Samba] Access files through VPN?
I am designing a network that consists of a vpn tunnel between medical labs. There will be a samba server at each end. Files will be copied each day to one main file server (linux to linux) but some people will be accessing files from remote windows machines through the vpn. Are there are issues with samba and vpn's I should be aware of? The files will be 200-700MB in size. I am going to list my current plans for rebuilding a Law Firm's network. I hope that someone will be able to tell me which project (samba or samba-tng) would be a better choice, or if staying with MS is the only choice. If my plan could be changed for the better, input would be greatly appreciated: A lot of this information is useless for my questions, but I am throwing it in anyway. - CURRENT SETUP (to be replaced/updated) 1 Server (Proliant 1600: P2-450 (single), RAID5 SCSI storage) *MS Win2000 Server *File and Print Services (file size ranges from 1kb to several 100mb). Currently around 10gb in shared files. *MS Exchange 5.5 Server (Public Store 2.5GB; Private Store 3.0GB). 50 Desktop Users (Compaq Deskpro's w/ P2-300 up to Compaq Evo P4's. DeskPro P2-450 is the most common) *MS Win98-WinXP *WordPerfect 8 *MS Office 97-2000 *MS Outlook (running with Exchange in Corporate Mode) *Several Database Applications 10 Laptop Users *WinME-XP *WordPerfect 8 *MS Office97-2000 *MS Outlook (running with Exchange in Corporate Mode Offline Folders) *Offline Files or Briefcase to keep files on laptop and backed up on server *Several Database Applications Network Hardware: *HUBS (evil slow junky hubs, to be replaced of course). *ISDN (I know... what the heck were they thinking? ISDN? 60 users and an overloaded Exchange Server). (Also soon to be replaced with sDSL or T1). - PLANNED REPLACEMENT (I will focus more on things relating to SAMBA, and some holes will be left as I don't know exactly how to do some things with SAMBA yet, or at least I don't know the best route.) *ALL Clients will be moved to MS Win2000 (wanted to go with OpenSource Software all around but that is not a viable solution for a law office at this time) Main File/Authentication Server (Microsoft would call it a PDC) *Linux or *BSD for OS (probably RedHat Linux as they offer the most corporate support). *Nice powerful system with RAID5 storage, redundant parts, blah blah. Still won't need to be as expensive as a new Win2000 Server. *Will handle authentication either through UN*X password system w/ SAMBA duplicating that(passwords could be pushed to the other servers) or thru' a pam or ldap design. Backup File/Authentication Server *Automated (through scripting) backup of main file server. *Backup Tape System (probably an Ultrium drive). *Backup as many services as possible for Main Server. Test Server *Name says it all. Used to test experimental projects/code. Mail Server *Here is where things get more complicated. I am not asking the SAMBA team for total help here as mail services are not in SAMBA's view. I will be keeping the Exchange 5.5 Server or replacing it with Bynari InsightServer (unless someone knows a better product). I MUST have a single login. *After connecting to the Main Server they should not have to put in another password (for email or backup files). *Exchange uses a directory system (not very compliant but it exist) and most alternatives use LDAP. Therefore I will have to use OpenLDAP at some point in the authentication scheme. That long (hope I don't get made into a troll) email leads up to a few questions. Samba or Samba-TNG or stay with Micro*leech*soft? What is the best route for a single authentication across multiple UN*X servers? Any other experiences with moving an office with my structure to all OSS (Open-Source Software) in the server room. Major Concerns: Single Authentication Seamless Change from users point of view. Re: [Samba] Samba + Quickbooks
From: Seth Hollen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Karl Schmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Samba] Samba + Quickbooks Date: 10 May 2002 22:58:14 -0400 just as a note, I have quickbooks on a samba share and have had no file corruption, a few mysterious file permission problems but nothing serious.the files are not that large however.I am considering proposing a linux/samba replacement to an accounting firm and this is something to be aware of, thanks! Seth On Fri, 2002-05-10 at 20:39, Karl Schmidt wrote: This is set up with Win2K boxes sharing a QB file on a SAMBA share. It may be quite different than with 95-98x-ME(Miserable Edition). There are two or more problems - one thing I identified is that it is possible for two computers to connect to the QB(QuickBooks) share using the same quick books logon - something that will cause data corruption. (Something that could have been easily addressed in the QB software too -- can't wait till GNUcash does invoices). The smb.conf that follows seems to have fixed this problem The other problem only starts after the file size reaches the magic 16777216 byte file size - after that size sharing a QB file on SAMBA seems to cause corruption on it's own. After a talking with several folks at Intuit - - (and being told twice that running off a Linux server was not problem) I found a brighter tech who told me that they don't support linux as a server and they have notes showing that they know about the file corruption problems that they can't show us. They don't think there is a work-around, but then I think they are probably wrong. I have added oplocks = no strict locking = yes To the share definition. And will know if it works in a while. If this gets to Andrew Trigell's attention, let him know that I will supply him with QB software to test this out if he needs it - all he has to do is ask. The files and directories belong to accounting.accounting the permissions are set to 770 NO guarantee if this works - It will take some weeks of just using it to see if I have it fixed - in the mean time I'm dong lots of verifydata and backing up several times/ day.
