Re: SD Value of Shelby Vehicles
Rob, I can understand your position. I have owned at least one of every vehicle offered by Shelby from both his facility in Whittier, CA. along with ones bearing his name built by Chrysler corp. I have found when trying to sell these car that the only ones with any real resale value to this date have been the '86 GLHS followed by the '89 CSX. I did well selling my truck for two reasons that I believe. One was the fact that it only has 72K miles on it and included some extra parts like a set of NOS wheels and the other was that is was truck number 2. As for the rest of the cars I had, '87 GLHS, CSX, Shelby Lancer and the '88 CSXT if you bought these cars cheap and put any money into them or paid a lot you were stuck with them so you better love it and keep it because selling it as a whole will cost you. I have killed a lot of very sorry shape Shelby and dodge built turbo cars over the years and recycled the parts back into the TD community. All the number cars were either rotted or crashed and I saved them from going to the salvage yard. There have been times I was called names and even kicked of the SDML three different occasions for having something to say back. Demand drives the prices and if you have a nice truck parting it out isn't really the way to go but selling it for a loss is no deal either. Bottom line, it's your truck to do with as you please so make your own choice in this matter. Try selling it locally or even in Hemmings motor news before resorting to removing the good stuff. Seen the gas prices? I don't get it, my Shelby dak with a new muffler got 25 MPG average. Sometimes I got over that on the highway. Thats doing REALLY well for a truck with a V8. As for the rest of the BS. The Little Red Express is a total POS and real slow, the Shelby will blow there doors off without much effort. They are ugly with red neck BS slapped all over them and twin stacks with a gas engine? Re: SD Value of Shelby Vehicles
Personally, I LOVE the Lil Reds, mainly the 78s (No cats, less smog stuff, round headlights) in 1978 they were the quickest vehicle made in USA in 0-60, mile, 0-100. The vette would be them to 110. The biggest problem with Dodge Shelby vehicles is they used the Shelby name as a test bed, then improved on performance. Who wouldn't rather have a 89-90 TII instead of a 86-87 Shelby motor. As for the Dakotas, it was the first non full size truck with a V8, but only 175hp, next thing you know the magnum v6 had more HP than the Shelby V8 (180), and the Magnum V8 had 230, it made the Shelby an appearance only truck. No one buys it for the handling. Please don't misunder stand me, I love the Shelby Dakotas, and think they don't get the prices they should, but you don't see me picking one up because I consider them a bargain either. The only Shelby Dodges I REALLY like are the ones that get you something Dodge wouldn't give, like intercooled L-Bodies, 4 wheel disks on the Lancer... The Dakota was incredible the year it came out, then Dodge made it obsolete with the magnum engines. I was waiting for a Shelby Magnum 360 Dakota Convertible to come out... - Original Message - From: ~RoB~ [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: shelby-dodge@imagicomm.com Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 11:07 AM Subject: Re: SD Value of Shelby Vehicles Seen the gas prices? Re: SD Value of Shelby Vehicles
Well said, I'm just thankful the prices are low. I love the cars and more than likely will NEVER be able to buy another Challenger R/T. It was easy when I graduated in 1974. I got my 87 GLHS for $1,500 a year ago. This was after a guy I know bought it off ebay and made at least $400 profit. I was happy to pay that. This car had 50,894 actual miles at that time. It needs paint and a bit of work, but it's pretty solid. I do have my 1968 AMX. That's my REAL muscle car. I got that 22 years ago for $425.00. The time to buy those really rare cars for a cheap price was just a few years after they were made. I looked at a HEMI Challenger R/T back in 1974 or 75 that had 25,000 miles on it. I sure wish I had the $1,500.00 at that time. LOL, If I only knew then what I know now. How many times this has popped up over the years on SDML I have no idea, but does the phrase starting with if I had a nickle mean anything. Sorry, but I gave up on the value and now hold onto Shelby Lancer 249 (just turned 54,000 miles and I'm the original owner) and the 85 GLH Turbo (53,000 original miles) because I like them, not because they will ever make me rich enough to retire to the French Riviera or even because they really are the original tuner car. And no Mike, it really has nothing to do with age. Do a little historical analysis and look at what the value of a 1965 GT 350 Shelby Mustang or a 67 GT 500 KR was during the mid 80s when they were only 20 years old. Sure, they were not at the ungodly prices they bring now, but they were already 3, 4 or 5 times their original sticker prices depending on condition. A car that was $5,500 new was going for well over $20,000 and even a beater 65 GT 350 H (the least desirable at the time) rusted all to hell with a replacement drivetrain was worth $10,000. I know, because I tried to buy one for $8,000 in 1985 and got turned down. Our cars? Sorry, I have never seen one exceed the sticker price (even new, they didn't sell at sticker unless it was the 1986 GLHS) It is all about the supply and demand. Why pay $600,000 for a 71 purple Hemi Cuda with no options and dog dish hub caps? Because they only built 15 total that year and only 4 are left and there are at least 10,000 people that want to buy one and 100 of those guys have real cash with lots of commas. Maybe, just maybe, when only 4 Lancers or 4 GLHS Chargers are left, they may be worth a little more, but I have no idea how we are going to create a demand even as the supply shrinks. It probably won't be because of a Movie. I don't think Back to the Future increased the demand for Deloreans. And Christine didn't make late 50s Mopars more popular. But Bullet did a lot for the 67 Mustang. Why? People love MUSTANGS. People have no love for our Mopars. Not even the MOPAR people have any love for our Mopars, and that is the worst shame of all. We are shunned by the Shelby Lovers and shunned by the Mopar lovers, so here we sit with our Shelby Mopars wondering where the love is. Maybe if we marketed them as the original Tuner.na. Won't work. The Tuner crowd already hates us too. They know what our tail lights look like :-) Robert Meier Shelby Lancer 249 1985 GLH T 2001 Neon R/T 1991 Shadow Vert (wife got a new birthday present yesterday) -- ---REMOVE-FOOTER-WHEN-REPLYING Questions? I believe the glhs, iroc r/t`s,and possible the daytona shelby just becasue of the looks will go up slightly but the old musclecars were actually pretty fast from the factory unlike most TD`s. Td`s even have a bad rep in the mopar community. I just don`t see these going up in value a lot because you can get GN`s and SRT-4`s all day long and their performance overall is a lot better. It`s just like the shelby dakota values being low.Why spend that kind of cash on a truck that slower than a lot of v6`s that you can barely drive because of the seating position and no extended cab.You can get a dakota r/t if you want speed. I really wish during the late 80`s and early 90`s I would have spent a little more time hunting for challengers and cuda`s instead of getting multiple TD`s. I originally got my cuda in 1987 and even with it needing a lot of work I turned down 44k just last week for it mainly because I know that I`d never be able to get another one even though I wanted that Jeep SRT-8 very badly.I`m pretty sure that no turbo dodge will ever double the sticker price it originally sold for. Re: SD Value of Shelby Vehicles
I think the reason for the low values is not enough time has passed. The TD's are around 20 years old, and most cars that are worth something are 35+ years old. Unless you want to hold onto it for another 15+ years, you aren't going to get much out of a run of the mill car. I see 20 year old cars everyday driving around. I don't see many 35+ year old cars driving around... Just food for thought. Mike [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Boy, I am really disappointed at what my Shelby Dakota bid up to on Ebay.
