Re: [RCSE] First Sailplane
Hey Jack!, West Carrollton High School was my main flying field in the 70's... and my high school '79-'81. I spent many days soaring there. My first RC sailplane was an Airtronics Square Soar. I also flew an original 100 sailplane and an Airtronics Questor there, as well as some powered stuff like a Model Builder Dragonfly. Do you remember any of the other guys who flew there? Everett Wick with his Pokey and Viking? His buddy Rich (Schafer?)... That was a great site - huge. I had my first hour flight there. Now covered with... you guessed it, sports fields. Andy Page Seattle --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jack Iafret [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: OK, what got me hooked was a Graupner Cirrus when I lived in the Dayton Ohio (mid 70's) area and belonged to the W.O.R.K.S. club (strictly power). One other guy (forgot the name know but he drove a comptition Vette) and I went to the West Carrolton High School and used his high start to launch. After about five launches and coming down to land the plane just circled for ten laps at 20 feet without loosing altitude and I without knowledge hooked my first thermal and rode it out for what seemed like an hour (probably five minutes). That was it for me, but it took awhile to commit. Really never got serious until I came to Michigan and started flying sailplanes with the Paragon in '84. Met a bunch of people that flew sailplanes rather than power and that was it for greasy kids stuff. So, first plane was the Cirrus and the favorite is the Paragon. Remember, Paragon's Forever. [RCSE] RCSE RX Help: need opinions/expertise
Thanks Bill, Sorry I didn't mention that. I've actually flew the plane and did some extensive range checks before. Not a proximity effect in this case and range was fine. I've since removed the rx in preparation to send it in to FMA. I also was able to swap crystals (same channel though) with the same result. Merrell How close are you to the plane/Rx with the Tx? I've seen exactly the same thing if the Tx and the Rx are too close, i.e. a few feet, but it stops if the Tx moves away. Anything over 10 feet and it should be dead solid. Just a thought. Bill At 11:14 AM 12/1/2004, you wrote: I've experienced the same with my first M5 purchased last winter. Using M5 with HS85MG servos. It is Futaba shift and I'veI tried different transmitters including Eclipse synth, Evo synth, and older Futaba crystal. Same result. The jitter (very slight but consistent) occurs all the time regardless of environment. However, turn the transmitter off and it stops. Shop, slope, outside, inside. I tried different battery packs with no change. I tried different antenae configuration. I'm going to closely check the antanae wiring later.
Re: [RCSE] counter rotating prop ?
Why bother? Just run both motors same direction and use the same type props. You won't notice the difference. I've done side by side pushers on Zagi's, also front, back pusher puller configs. Lots of power, but sucks batteries fast (unless your using LiPos). -- Tom Rust Nanochip Inc 48041 Fremont Blvd Fremont, CA 94538 (510) 770-2507 (510) 339-6263 (510) 339-9636 FAX (510) 912-4662 cell http://www.nanochip.com RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Re: [RCSE]First and Favorite Plane(s) (LONG)
I say 'Plane(s)' because I have only been at this racket since August of 2003. okay not true: Back in 1977 I was stationed at Castle AFB with the F-106 / T-33 squadron there, and my friend from Modesto Danny Norton got me to try R/C gliders. So I *think* I built in the barracks a Wanderer. I honestly don't recall exactly what it was but I think it was two meter. I flew it on a slope and once in a contest. I wish I knew if it was Visalia but I again I don't remember. All I recall was Danny, myself, and a thin guy in a pith helmet named 'Roger', flew there. After I left for F-111s in England I lost contact with Danny. Don't know what happen to him. Or Rogers last name... or the plane, or the radio... etc. Fast forward to August 2003: First was a DAW TG-3. Still have it. To this day I am haunted by my inability to turn it in a thermal without dropping a wing tip really really fast and falling 10's of meters in the process. :D Yes I have washout in it... gotta be something else... dunno what. Anyway it's a good sloper like all foamies! And it looks impressive at the LSS slope site amongst all those smaller planes! I wish I had bought a 1-26 or KA-6 when I had the chance... Next was an Easy Answer. A Global Hobbies 'price point' ship loosely based (I think) on Blaine Rawdon's Mirage. (If I got the history of the ship correct.) I know the guy that knows the guy (grin) that penned the plans for it. Anyway I flew that for 5 months. Never broke nuttin'. Really served it's purpose as I learned to 'launch, fly, and land' with it. Even winched it and competed once or twice in novice/sportsman class with it. Just R/E. No 'S'. :D Great plane, really. Pretty strong. I built it stock and was pretty aggressive on the end of the winch. Memorial day weekend 2004 I was too aggressive. I folded the wing at the dihedral brace IIRC. I was right over the winch turnaround when it folded. Another lesson learned. Thinking I was only a few weeks away from having a 2 meter Gnome RES ship ready to fly, I gave the peices, minus the radio, to a guy that said he could rebuild it and use it to teach. I gather many people dislike the straight center panel designs, but I am looking forward to building my Mirage as I liked flying the Easy Answer. And the fact I built it with me own two paws made it that much more enjoyable. BTW: It would be more like 3 months before the Gnome (and therefore I) flew. :( So my favorite so far is my current 2 meter Gnome. Am I lying when I say these old build up brick 'poop-houses' of a sailplane can be winched -almost- like a molded ship? Pedal to the ground? A friend at last weekend's SWSA fun fly did just that. Just had me throw it and he kept the pedal down for almost the entire launch. :D Only mod I made was to build the spar like the darkstar spar is built outside of the plane and drop it in. I used 007 carbon top and bottom captured in the spar. Almost not worth using, but I did not know that then. Others build them stock and winch the heck out of them too. It seems to fly wonderfully, seems to have good legs for a woodie, seems to slow down nicely for landing, and seems to circle in thermals with almost no bad habits. LOL! Truely a joy to fly. And the fact that I built it with me own two paws makes it that much more enjoyable. :D But the best is yet to come. See I've flown a 3 meter Gnome a few times and a Paragon. The big Gnome has all the qualities of the 2 meter, plus seems to fly smoother and thermal as well if not better than the 2 meter. And it winches like a molded plane. And I have a kit! :D And I am working on a Gambler+ built up 2 channel DLG. Speak of to come... RE: [RCSE] Drela foils == marketing gimmick now?
-Original Message- From: Stuart A. Hall [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you check out the various ads and articles in Model Aviation and on the Web you will notice how many of them refer to Drela airfols. If the writer of the ads and articles didn't say what the airfoil was then almost everyone reading the ad or article would be left wondering what the airfoil was. There really is no mystery here. The airfoil is almost the first thing that anybody wants to know about a plane. If this information were not supplied in the ad or article then someone would be spending a lot of time answering individual emails or phone calls to answer that question. It is true that the Bubble Dancer, Allegro and other assorted planes fly quite nicely, but I wonder how much of the airfoil choice is just a marketing gimmick. The manufacturer of a new plane will use whatever airfoil he/she thinks will do the best job on the airplane he is building. A very great many modelers have come to believe that Drela airfoils are the best airfoils available. Why would they not choose those airfoils for their models? A marketing gimmick would involve advertising something to your customers that sounds really good but is in fact inferior but easier/less expensive to produce. Drela airfoils are the opposite of that. They are widely held by the modeling public as the best performing airfoils. They are also known by model manufacturers to be far more difficult and expensive to produce. This due to their thinness which requires more expensive materials and more labor to build. One extra swipe of the sandpaper by our Czech worker-bee has turned that Drela foiled AVA/Topaz/whatever into some other airfoil. There are inaccuracies involved in the production of any airfoil. This is true no matter what airfoil is chosen or which building method is used. Why not choose the best airfoil available and do your best to make it as accurate as you can? Particularly on these amazing built up RES ships with mylar covering, I wonder how much of the performance is due to the airfoil and how much is due to very light balsa/composite building techniques. Dr Drela designs his airfoils for each specific application. In the case of a film covered wing, The wing/airfoil is designed such that all areas which are to be film covered will have flat facets rather than a curved airfoil shape. Since the airfoil was designed with this in mind, very little performance is sacrificed compared to just using a locally curved airfoil and letting the film covering sag between the ribs. Does Dr. Drela get a royalty for the use of his name in advertising? Did/does Dr. Selig? I sincerely doubt that this ever happens. Dr Drela freely publishes all of his airfoils and model plans and spends many hours at the computer instructing people on many topics. Every detail of his model plans have been discussed in public forums. Dr. Drela freely discusses the smallest detail of construction. He also freely shares his remarkable aerodynamic knowledge in a number of different groups. To even suggest a profit motive for all of Dr Drela's contributions to this hobby is way off base. [RCSE] Taking AVA/Graphites...for granted?
Hi Guys, The recent post about euro worker bees was timely. A simple way to stop them from copying our brain trust is to lose them. IF you haven't been paying attention to the news, the Ukraine is in serious, nay mega serious turmoil right now. While Vladimir and friends can likely work through the sounds of bullets and bombs, getting the product from those dank sweat shop factories (their houses work benches) is likely gonna come to a huge halt ...shortly. Barry Kennedy spoke to Vladimir recently and he says things are okay for right now but the population is at riot level and have made a run on the banking system to try to protect what money they have there. That's not a good thing. Since trucking is a nationalize kind of thing, likely some sort of union too, waiting to decide on a new moldie could end up meaning waiting for the box to find a truck there. this has been a public service hint. Re: [RCSE] Home made shipping boxes.
I've had really good luck getting large sheets of cardboard from the back of furniture stores. I'd just use my long straight edge and a screwdriver to score and bend the cardboard into box shapes. Lately, I've found another source for ready made boxes. It's a store that sells vertical blinds. The boxes are longer than what is needed to ship open class planes. The width and thickness are perfect and they are very sturdy cardboard. At one time I looked into buying boxes, but in order to get a good deal, I'd have to buy in bulk and I don't ship enough airplanes to justify that. I hope this information helps. Re: [RCSE] Inexpensive Hotliner?
I know I wouild like to see more traffic for hotliners in this list. There are a lot of good options. But here are some questions... 1. What's your budget? 2. What type of flying are you going to do, all aerobatics, all thermalling or a mixture? 3. What type of batteries are you going to be using? 4. [RCSE] All flying vertical stab...
What are the issues with an all flying vertical stab? I'm building the new tail for my solar plane and I'm thinking I'll make a Drela style carbon V mount for the vstab. In trying to make everything light and survivable It looks like I can make an all flying vertical stab lighter than a normal rudder. My Thoughts: I can build a one piece foil lighter than a two piece foil even with a tape hinge. The Plane is Rudder Elevator and has heavy wings thus I don't really want much adverse roll from the rudder. This makes me want to build a vertical stab that is both above and below the boom. To survive landing/ground contact the part below the boom has to be heavy/sturdy. If I make the vstab all flying then I can make it pivot around a single bolt on the all flying mount, thus it piviots out of the way rather than absorbing landing loads. Does this make sense or am I way off base for some reason I don't understand? Any airfoil suggestions? Re: [RCSE] Okay got it figured out! 8103 and electric F5J set up
A more logical way would have been to use Aux3 to Elevator on Mix3 activated by BTFY1 for elevator. And then use any other mix to mix Aux3 to Aux2 with that mix always on. The Aux3 switch is the same as the BTFY switch. But the throttle mix needs to be always on since you want that to mix in and move the full amount of travel. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Motor goes into Aux 2. Go to Mix 3 Aux 2 to Elevator You will enter the amount after you have your model up and flying, this is to add some down elevator compenstation IF you need it while climbing with the motor...should really shim the motor to get the right thrust angle instead). Move the cursor down to Switch and chose BTFY1 (that is the top left switch and its position pushed away from you...as in GO! All you have done at this point is assign the BTFY switch position 1 to work some down elevator with the motor on and no elevator compensation when the motor is off and the switch is in the BTFY 0 position (stands for Butterfly not that it matters). Next we need to get AUX 2 programmed work the motor when the BTFY switch is in the 1 position..and that it will work the motors speed controller so far enough off that the controller will initialize, and far enough up so that you get full throttle. This is for LMR competiton setting, it does not give you variable/proportional motor control..off or on. Go to Mix 6 and chose Aux2 to Aux2...yep mixed to itself! Cursor down to the mix percentage. You notice that the cursor is only on one of the number choices. You need to make one fully + and the other fully -. How? Go up to the Aux2 or Flap knob on the top left of the radio. Turn it fully to the left and then fully to the left. The cursor will move from one of the amounts to the other. Move the knob to one amount and plus it all the way, then move it down and minus it all the way. Cursor down to the Switch position and chose BTFY1 Move the cursor to the OFFSET position and with the knob on top all the way counter clockwize, hit CLEAR (I think) or one of the +/- buttons, (I forgot already :-). Make sure your Prop is off of the motor. Next plug the motor into the Aux 2 spot, (the knob should live totally counter clockwize from that day on as it will work the motor some). Move the BTFY switch to the 0 position or toward you. Your motor controller will likely beep to let you know it initialized. After it does, move the switch to the 1 position or away from you, and it should start. If you find you don't seem to have full throttle, turn it off then go to the Travel Adjust menu, put the cursor on the AUX2 position, turn the motor on and increase the amount fully. That should do it. However if when you move the switch to the BTFY 1 position, you find that your car begins to beep, likely you will have to offer a live chicken sacrifice to the gods of Japanese Radio Corporation. Mix 3 is to get some down elevator to correct for a lazy motor alignment installation Mix 6 is to get the motor to turn off or on using the BTFY1 switch. The Spoiler/Throttle stick has NOTHING to do with the motor, nothing. It is only for actuating your landing flap and its elevator compensation. This isn't 'hard', so don't be telling me it's easier with some other radio. Its part of the fun. Got it? Gordy RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] All flying vertical stab...
I'm building the new tail for my solar plane and I'm thinking I'll make a Drela style carbon V mount for the vstab. The original carbon V-mount was on the Daedalus HPA, on both the stab and the rudder: http://trc.dfrc.nasa.gov/gallery/photo/Daedalus/Medium/EC88-0059-002.jpg http://trc.dfrc.nasa.gov/gallery/photo/Daedalus/Large/EC88-0059-002.jpg (hi-res) http://trc.dfrc.nasa.gov/gallery/photo/Daedalus/Medium/EC87-0014-8.jpg http://trc.dfrc.nasa.gov/gallery/photo/Daedalus/Large/EC87-0014-8.jpg (hi res) Putting the rudder on a V-mount works fine, except striking the rudder on the ground may cause it to break. I suppose you could have the V-mounted rudder mostly above the boom, which would minimize the torques on the V-mount from a ground strike. But rudder airloads will torque the boom more. Then there's the agony of deciding whether to put the rudder on the right side or the left side of the boom... RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Falcon 550 E specs needed
Hi all, I've done a quick web search for this plane but haven't come up with any specs. I have a Falcon 550E fuselage, but don't know anything about the aircraft itself. I believe it was an Airtronics product. If anyone has any info on the wing section, planform, span, area, horizontal stab profile, rudder size/shape, I would be much in debt. Thanks Dan Kitching Dan, I have a NIB kit at home and I can give you all the spec you needed to know. And if you are interested, it is for sale. The section is a Eppler 387, 550 sq in(hence the name 550E), the tail section I used on mine is Naca-0009. The rudder shape is not that important, I converted my to T-tail. [RCSE] Limits in R/C Soaring - a proposed discussion
As I get older, I find my own limits getting a bit more conservative. Reflecting on this prompts a proposed discussion on certain limits in R/C soaring. When posting a comment, keep it to a particular limit. Comments on the factors determining the limit would be appreciated. For example, is the limit aerodynamically, technological, financially, or perhaps even humanly defined. Perhaps a combination of factors? The three limits I'd like to see explored are: - What is the limit of the current speed task in F3B? - Is there an ultimate limit for DS speeds? If so what defines it? - What is the duration limit for a pure thermal (no slope assist) duration flight? So instead of bashing Fed Ex et al, vendors, Gordy, or the good old boys in the AMA, why not stretch mind and imagination and become a prophet (with no danger in this forum of being without honor)? Think, then post, Jim Deck And, as David Letterman says, This is an exhibition not a competition, no wagering please. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] BRASS
BRASS lost it's field today. Even though it is private property, it is zoned agricultural and requires a special use permit for an organization involved in active recreation. They denied our request for such a permit. The land owner can still have a couple friends over to fly, but we can't have it as a club field. We have a very nice only a few months old 8 x 12 storage building if anyone is interested (cost us $1200). It has a solar charger that keeps our 4 batteries charged. (It is an 80 watt unit and cost us about $500 with all the stuff.) If anyone is interested, I can take offers to the club this weekend. This means no ESL or Woody contests next year. Re: [RCSE] All flying vertical stab...
Putting the rudder on a V-mount works fine, except striking the rudder on the ground may cause it to break. I suppose you could have the V-mounted rudder mostly above the boom, which would minimize the torques on the V-mount from a ground strike. But rudder airloads will torque the boom more. My thought was that the rudder strikes on landing would most likely be from straight ahead. If the rudder was attached with a single bolt then it should pivot around that bolt, and not transmit much load to anything? The Flight loads wanting to rotate the rudder fore and aft in the vertical plane should be almost zero if the mount is in the rudder center??? I realize that the rotating prop puts some diferential airflow into the equation but I wouldn;t think it was that much Am I missing something? Then there's the agony of deciding whether to put the rudder on the right side or the left side of the boom... One aspect of R/C soaring has some official data recorded for timed flights standing in one spot. You might be surprised how difficult it is to stay up for an hour on any given day; The Scale Soaring Gold Medal program proves just that. At Venues all over the U.S and Canada, from Visalia to Los Banos to the JR Aerotow to the NATS XC event (scale XC) Check it out. These are timed (verified by second party) flights at public events. This years program was a popular success, if you fly scale sailplanes, try it for yourself next year. Here is the excel sheet with info. Here is a limit of a different kind. Last summer I flew the 2Meter contest in Grand Rapids Michigan. I managed to gain 3000 feet six minutes. Troy Lawiki was timing for me and extra sets of eyes helping spotting the disappearing glider. I did managed to dive 3200 in less then two minutes and land on time. [RCSE] flying on 72 in germany ?
It's that time of the year again - I'm going to Germany to deal with some US immigration issues at the consulate in Frankfurt and I'm wondering if I should take some planes. A sportube is waiting in the store. Do members of the soaring exchange have any recent experiences here with flying in Germany on US equipment ? Any specific risks to the frequency band ? About a year ago, I went on a similar trip, without taking any planes (I posted here too - thanks for the advice then). I did visit the Teck, where some laid back slope soaring was going on. The guys there weren't even in a club, and they didn't seem particularly opposed to someone flying on a frenchman radio (72mHz :-) But then again, some germans are known for liking their laws to be followed... Re: [RCSE] BRASS
I was totally caught off guard. We had people get up and say they were afraid we would kill their children. Chances of them being killed by a car compared to a model glider are staggering. I just wasn't prepared for the total lack of understanding of the hobby. Also, a great lesson learned -- Know Your Neighbors.
