Hi Marco, I'm upgrading now my Soekris 5501 bios with Minicom and Ubuntu (my workstation now). My step: -check if lrzsz is installed or apt-get install lrzsz -start minicom and ctrl-p to comBIOS Monitor -download the bios from soekris.com -On minicom ctrl a+z and O (cOnfigure), my serial port setup: Serial Device : /dev/ttyS0 Lockfile Location : /var/lock Bps/Par/Bits : 9600 8N1 Hardware Flow Control : No Software Flow Control : No ok, sounds god:) -write download - on comBIOS and very fast ctrl a+z and S (send file) -select xmodem, search the file click space bar and enter -Sending b5501_132i.bin, 784 blocks: Give your local XMODEM reeive command now etc etc on minicom -on comBios:flashupdate -on comBios:reboot On my various soekris this tips works fine, 4801 or 5501. [Soekris] What is the meaning of BIOS parameter ConMute?
Hi The ConMute BIOS is apparently new to the 5501. I have been unable to find a user's manual for the 5501 so I (try to) use the manual for the 4801 instead. After having used the hints from the 5501 Mystery - to me - at boot time thread I was able to get the 5501 to boot without a serial terminal connected, but it would not reboot reliably. 1 out of 3 times the box hang - both with warm and cold reboot. It is obviously a flowcontrol issue - what else could it be?. I believe I have exhausted the configuration options for GRUB by using these lines in GRUB's menu.lst: # Hide the menu hiddenmenu # Setup a serial console serial --unit=0 --speed=19200 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1 terminal serial so I have started looking for similar options in the BIOS. There aren't many and most of the are either obviously irrelevant for serial i/o or/and described in the 4801 manual. ConMute isn't described. It apparently has influence on the process for since I chane it from Enabled to Disabled, it has booted reliably. So what is the meaning of ConMute? As a point of reference, I only get 10mbps from LAN to WAN, through NAT and firewall rules, on a 4501 running m0n0wall. I haven't seriously pressed the 5501 yet, but it feels much faster. ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

Looks right. With NAT and firewalling, a 4501 will get you around 10-15 Mb depending on OS, packet filter and NAT used, and configuration. 4801 will get you more like 30 Mb. I don't have a 5501 to test, but supposedly they can do at or near 100 Mb wire speed, from what I've heard. ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

I solved my net5501 VLAN problems (with m0n0wall 1.3B4) by adding a $30 Intel Pro 1000 GT PCI card... assuming a single tagged port is sufficient, with the vr ports as untagged.
