Personally I have bigger hands, so I like to have a big mouse. The MX is

you have any recommendation?

I used to like Logitech mice but since they changed to a metallic wheel that is
almost unusable I don't buy them anymore. The last one costed me $100+ and had
to return it the next day because the new wheel was a piece of garbage.

And since we use a middle click quite a lot, I'm looking for something that
isn't extremely hard to click like those Logitech and some Microsoft ones.

I'm using a Razer Deathadder right now and so far it was perfect, until my
middle click started to fail sometimes. I would buy a new Deathadder, even if
it is named Deathadder, but Razer's new cloud based drivers that require
internet connection and an account are a deal breaker for me. Specially if
there is a possibility that I'll have to work in my client's office.

Talking about middle click, Surface Pro 3 doesn't have a middle click, and the
stencil buttons are unusable in anything but Microsoft OneNote or something
like that, and are not configurable. At all.

are nice. (Keep in mind, I have limited experience with C4D)

A preference that changes icons in the interface from pictures to text. ☺
An “increment and save” option.
You can have more than one scene open at a time. You can also copy/paste

When moving things, you get a line that shows you where the object is moving

If you use After Effects, it’s integration looks fantastic.

I personally would prefer an old school mailing list attempt rather than
linkedIn groups. Forums are even worse. I think the reason for the low noise
ratio of the list was because it was not so well known by everybody. It was and
is a place for (softimage) professionals. Students and starters mostly using
forums. Many forums, especially the max and maya forums were overrun by
hobbyists and had therefore very high noise, what made them unattractive for
professionals and most of the old school mailing list people.
I would like to keep it that way. Setting up a new mail server and keep it
maintained should not be hard and costs nothing (if AD eventually will shut it
down in a few years...)

I'd like to suggest one of the really old schoolers like
Ed-doubleR-doubleS-Harriss or Matt Lind to provide a functional mailing list
that runs on their servers and it doesn't need any high bandwith, does it? ;)
The list never needed any moderation as far as I know, it was a self organized
place used by professionals. Very low cost!
How do you think about it, Ed/Matt?
Maybe with a backup or some kind of redundant list-server, to make sure the
list continue to work if a server runs by a single person, will fail eventually

it's a good place to gather people.

The XSI Mailing List Contacts backup Linked In group is for all of us to
share contacts and keep in touch. Everyone on the list is invited!
First, please put yourself on this online Excel file:

Please don't fill the invited on column.
Emails are not made public, but they are entered in the Linked In group.

When I have enough contacts, I pre-approve people then send invitations to the

3. “Text Buttons” option. Less Icons please.
4. Explorer, Explorer, Explorer, Explorer, Explorer, Explorer.
5. Selections. The way you select things in XSI is awesome. Object based,
component based, whatever. It just works. Multiple Object select editing. You
know what I mean, there is no need for an deep explanation of this one.

…so many more, but you did say only 5.

Yes, I left ICE, workgroups, workflow, operator stack, Gator, overall UI, etc…
off the list. But you know I wanted to put them on there. One thing I don’t
feel like I can put the list is community. There is nothing that anyone can do

It cannot be created by force. I really, really hope it forms over time or just

I guess this list is closely related with the type of tasks that land on the
individual artists table, but here are my top 5:

ICE - for its power and versatility

Render Tree - flexibility for testing various shading setups

Operator Stack - the ability to go back in modeling stack and fix stuff in the
11th hour before rendering

Render Passes/Partitions/Overrides

General ease of use and efficient workflow

One of the things I liked about XSIBase was that you could subscribe to it just
like you could subscribe to this list. All the posts came to your inbox the
instant they were posted to the forum. You read what you wanted when you had
time and you never missed anything. Each email had a link at the bottom if you
wanted to reply. I don't even think most people knew XSIBase had this function.
I used it all the time, it was awesome. Of course the point is moot now since
it was destroyed by hackers.

Perhaps a feature like this could be implemented in other forums? It would make
many of the people on this list very happy. Maybe this feature already exists
and I don't know about it?

For this to work you still have to register. But once that's out of the way,
you never even have to visit the again site except to reply to posts.

RE: Cinema 4D an option?

2014-03-13 Thread Ed Harriss
Regarding the free CC... You are right. But the free version in combination
with their 42 day demo will be a good way to test the C4D waters to see if it
will indeed be worth buying the full version to add to our pipeline.

The plan would be to use the free version to get an understanding of how it
works in our environment, then install the demo to see what we are missing.
(Even though the demo does still have some limitations.)

Good to hear that the C4D guys are passionate/willing to listen.
I wonder if they give out temp licenses? ;) That way our evaluation won't be
restricted by the limitations of the demo or the free CC version.

Hair and Strands are supported as of a couple of builds now, but 'lofted'
strands are not, they're still in progress. The hair shader is also not live

Comp: Joel Gibbs/Don Culwell

The concept was simple: have a camera move through a room as it changes decor
to reflect a different decade from the 1960s up through the present day. We
technically had 2 weeks from start to finish, but in reality we wound up with a
much tighter schedule. We certainly didn't have time to model what we needed,
so we bought some commercial models, retextured and reshaded them, and lit the
scenes. In the end I was able to get each decade accounted for in about one
work day each. Spent a couple of hours in the morning gathering and prepping
the assets, then blocking in the lighting and shading, then rest of the day
tweaking, and finally off to render. Joel and Don then took it and comped it in
After Effects.

- The 3-bounce cap was raised right as I started lighting this, and I was so
thankful! I used 8 bounces on this job and it really helped, especially in the
70s set, with all the orange spill everywhere.

- The shag carpet in the 70s set is not hair. It's just a single dense rug
instanced around the room.

- Rendered using IPC + BF. The longest frames were for the 70s and took maybe
12-15min on our fastest machines. Other shots were closer to the 5-6 min mark.

- The 80s set was tough! Have you ever tried to actually define the 80s in
terms of style? It's a mess! We all have ideas about it, but when it comes time
to actually produce something that says '80s', and you have like a day to do
it, it's not easy. Stupid 80s! In the end, we had a couple of different
directions to go in, and just picked one.

there was the Softimage list, which is pretty much what we are using now. There
were even other lists like eddie, particle, etc.. (Yea, I'm old..) Anyway, we
could have this list stay a Softimage list and create another one for all the

Perfect!

Maybe we need to go back to a multi-address list system like we had in the old
days. There was the discussion list, which was all fun/monkeys/cheese/Porl and
there was the Softimage list, which is pretty much what we are using now. There
were even other lists like eddie, particle, etc.. (Yea, I'm old..) Anyway, we
could have this list stay a Softimage list and create another one for all the

Perfect!

do this as i feel it gives me a more secure control over what shows up in

became stale and didn't include the new features but just the generalities that
didn't change. you didn't get all the books for an upgrade. I think everyone
dropped books firstly to shorten that release window and then to cut any extra

I don't understand how this could have happened. How did they pick the 7%? Did
they blindfold themselves and throw darts at a an employee chart? No disrespect
to the good people that weren't part of the 7%, but from a user's viewpoint it
seems like they let go some people who were more valuable than they could
possibly imagine. I am very sorry to hear about this.

I'm on boards with several others. This might be the tipping point for me.
Stephen Manny were, without a doubt, the main reason I continued to pay my
subscription each year.

I've been evaluating options over the past couple of years, and while I don't
think there's anything nearly as good as Softimage, it's burdened by a
corporation that doesn't know it's @sshole from it's elbow.

Stephen, please (if you feel like it) post other contact info to the list so
folks can stay in touch.

You have always been an extremely kind, thoughtful, patient and helpful person
(especially when dealing with someone like me). I can't express enough how
angry and saddened I am at this news.

I'm sure you realize it already, but there's an entire community here that's
ready and willing to help out in any way we can.

I wish you all the best in your future.

We are able to have RR automatically reconnect to different workgroups that

been using RR for many years now. I can not say enough good things about it.

So if anyone have any helpful tips it would be most welcome.

I've got archives from 2002 on.
If your email is earlier than that... it's probably pushing up the daisies.
(Unless someone nailed the email down somewhere else.)

If not, let me know what you are looking for and I can do a search.

Does anyone have a link to archives of the Softimage list that go all the way
back to the first few versions of XSI (anyone remember the beckman archives?) I
am seeking an email I sent out from back in my Quiet Man days.
