We use the mobile phone, the mp3 player, and our laptop, in order to gain access to the digital part of our life. In recent years this situation has lead to the creation of new interdisciplinary subjects like Interaction Design or Physical Computing. We live between two worlds, our physical environment and the digital space. Technology and its digital space are our second nature and the interfaces are our points of access to this technosphere. Since artists started working with technology they have been developing interfaces and modes of interaction. The interface itself became an artistic thematic. The project INTERFACE and SOCIETY investigates how artists deal with the transformation of our everyday life through technical interfaces. With the rapid technological development a thoroughly critique of the interface towards society is necessary. The role of the artist is thereby crucial. S/he has the freedom to deal with technologies and interfaces beyond functionality and usability. The project INTERFACE and SOCIETY is looking at this development with a special focus on the artistic contribution. -- INTERFACE and SOCIETY is an umbrella for a range of activities throughout 2006 at Atelier Nord in Oslo. [spectre] Call for Workshop participation: Mobile Troops - Urban Jungle / Mobile media art / Atelier Nord Oslo
+ Call for workshop participation Mobile Troops - Urban Jungle / Mobile media art Tuesday 12th of September - Friday 15th of September at Atelier Nord Oslo/Norway by Laura Beloff Erich Berger Free participation Application deadline Friday 11th of August Send applications with CV to [EMAIL PROTECTED] + The recent years have witnessed the emergence of mobile and wireless art works in the media arts. The somewhat blurry definition mobile art is commonly used as a reference to works, which are incorporating a mobile device (phone, pda, gps) as a part of the work or which are made to be viewed on a screen of a mobile device. Various mobile devices, wireless networks and the concept of technologically enabeld presence are conditions for this kind of art works. The wide variety of works (locative media, wearables etc) under the category of mobile art share usually at least two similarities, they have a technological component as a vital part of them and they are related to a physical object. Works, which use mobile media as a critical artistic medium are not necessarily always inventing new functions or features for the devices, but are transforming existing possibilities and by doing it they are exposing the characteristics of these devices, networks, and the society using them. Mobile troops ironically points to the fact that we tend to increasingly equip us with all kinds of necessary interfaces for surviving the urban jungle. The electronic car key is as important as mobile phone and credit card. Mobile troops is a workshop about media art which is mobile, (possibly) networked, and experimenting with new ideas and artistic concepts. Utilizing everyday objects and interfaces, like the mobile phone, the workshop introduces strategies, concepts and technologies for artists, designers and practitioners who are interested in mobile art and or working with mobile and networked devices. The workshop will consist of: * Introduction into the theory and history of mobile art * Introduction into the technology of mobile art * Technological infrastructure * Potential for mobile art * Concept development and discussions * Hands on experiments, research and presentations There is no technological preknowledge necessary. Tools employed: Java and Symbian based mobile phones Mobile Processing Pure Data Arduino physical computing platform + WORKSHOP PARTICIPATION Participation is free of charge. +++ CALL FOR WORKSHOP PARTICIPATION - Atelier Nord Oslo/Norway +++ Maxwell City an artistic investigation into the electromagnetic urban environment Two consecutive workshops: Workshop I Wednesday 9th of May - Saturday 12th of May 2007 Workshop II Wednesday 30th of May - Saturday 2nd of June 2007 Where: Atelier Nord Lakkegata 55D N-0817 Oslo Directors: Erich Berger and Martin Howse Guest: Armin Medosch Participation is free of charge Application deadline Friday 13th of April Send application for participation with CV to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Further information: http://anart.no/projects/maxwell-city/ +++ In 1864 the English physicist James Clerk Maxwell presented a set of mathematical equations to the Royal Society. These equations which are now known as Maxwell.s equations describe the behaviour of electric and magnetic fields and their interaction with matter - electromagnetism. Maxwell showed that his equations predict waves of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that travel through empty space - electromagnetic waves. +++ Almost 150 years later, the practical applications of Maxwell.s mathematics are deeply and indispensably entwined with our everyday lives. Radio, Television, Mobile phones or wireless networks, all are based on wireless data and information transmission utilizing electromagnetic radiation as a medium. Sorry for cross-posting - please distribute Ars Bioarctica – Open Call Application deadline the 31st of October 2017. Application form here: https://bioartsociety.fi/projects/ars-bioarctica/calls/apply We are glad to announce an open call for our Ars Bioarctica residency program at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in the subarctic Lapland for the year 2018. The residency expenses need to be covered by the applicants with the exception for one artist/group from the Nordic/Baltic countries (excluding Finland). The residency offers a unique possibility for artistic work in a biological field station and in the subarctic environment of Finland. We will select around 15 artists/artist groups to work at the Station for periods from one week up to several months, the desired length of the stay should be stated in the application. One fully funded residency will be awarded to an artist/artist group based in the Nordic and Baltic countries (except Finland) with an art approach. The residency is a joint effort with HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme and the selected artist/artist group has the option for a short stay in Helsinki either before or after the stay in Kilpisjärvi (depending on availability of guest rooms at HIAP). The residency is supported by the Kulturkontakt Nord Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture. Since 2010 the Bioartsociety is organizing the Ars Bioarctica Residency programme together with the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in the subarctic Lapland. [spectre] [Bioartsociety] Open call - Ars Bioarctica residency 2019 -20
Sorry for cross-posting - please distribute! Ars Bioarctica – Open Call for the years 2019-20 Application deadline the 31st of August 2018. Application form here: https://bioartsociety.fi/projects/ars-bioarctica/calls/apply-1 We are glad to announce an open call for our Ars Bioarctica residency program at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in the subarctic Lapland for the years 2019 - 2020. The residency offers a unique possibility for artistic work in a biological field station and in the subarctic environment of Finland. The residency expenses need to be covered by the applicants. We will select around 20 artists/artist groups to work at the Station for periods from one week up to several months, the desired length of the stay should be stated in the application. Since 2009 the Bioartsociety is organizing the Ars Bioarctica Residency programme together with the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki. Until now more than 100 artists, scientists, and practitioners have been developing work at the Station on topics related to biology, ecology and life sciences. The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station provides the residents with a combined living and working environment, a basic field laboratory, internet connection and sauna, and the same possibilities and infrastructure as its scientists and staff. This includes access to scientific equipment, laboratory facilities, the library and seminar room as well as the usage of field equipment. A dedicated mentor in Kilpisjärvi will familiarise residents with the local environment and customs. Kilpisjärvi is situated in the area where Sámi culture has it's roots. The Sámi are the only indigenous people in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, as well as the whole of the European Union. They inhabited the area long before any state borders were drawn. The area is called Lapland, but the Sámis themselves use the name Sápmi. To apply, please, complete the application form with its attachments here: https://bioartsociety.fi/projects/ars-bioarctica/calls/apply-1 The evaluation of the applications emphasises the quality of the proposal, its interaction of art, its artistic and scientific significance, the project's relation to the subarctic environment and its feasibility to be carried out at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in the proposed time. The selected artists will be announced by the end of September 2018. Please, send your questions to Piritta Puhto, piritta.pu...@bioartsociety.fi. [spectre] 'Art as We Don't Know It' - a new publication marking the 10th anniversary of the Bioart Society in Helsinki
Dear all, I would like to put your attention to the new publication 'Art as we Don't Know It' edited by Erich Berger, Kira O'Reilly, Kasperi Mäki-Reinikka, Helena Sederholm and published by Aalto Arts Books. The 280 page volume is available as hard copy or as free full pdf download via the Aalto Arts Books online shop: https://shop.aalto.fi/p/1194-art-as-we-dont-know-it/ . The book marks the 10th anniversary of the Bioart Society but instead of looking back we joined forces with Biofilia – Base for Biological Arts to have a glimpse forward and to scan what kind of questions and topics in the realm of bioart, art and its politics could be relevant for our work in the coming years. Art as We Don’t Know It showcases art and research that has grown and flourished within the wider network of both the Bioart Society and Biofilia during the previous decade. The book features a foreword by curator Mónica Bello, and a selection of peer-reviewed articles, personal accounts and interviews, artistic contributions and collaborative projects which illustrate the breadth and diversity of bioart. The resulting book is a tantalising and invaluable indicator of trends, visions and impulses in the field. We have an inspiring line-up of contributors which we are very grateful to for sharing their thoughts, ideas and insights: Markus Schmidt & Nediljko Budisa, Andy Gracie, Adriana Knouf, Marta De Menezes & Luis Graca, Marietta Radomska & Cecilia Åsberg, Crystal Bennes, Bartaku, Erich Berger, Antero Kare, Laura Beloff, Johanna Rotko, Kasperi Mäki-Reinikka, Teemu Lehmusruusu, Antti Tenetz, Ian Ingram & Theun Borssele, Paul Vanouse, Rian Ciela Visscher Hammond, Christina Stadlbauer, Paula Humberg, Denisa Kera, Leena Valkeapää, lifepatch, Jurij Krpan, Anu Osva, Lifepatch, Kristiina Ljokkoi & Tomi Slotte Dufva, Ulla Taipale & Christina Stadlbauer, Margherita Pevere, Heather Davis, Elaine Gan & Terike Haapoja, Ida Bencke, Mari Keski-Korsu, Oron Catts & Ionat Zurr, Kira O'Reilly, Pia Lindman, Helena Sederholm and Lauri Linna and with a foreword by Mónica Bello.
