If u want to try it out, there's a card model version here:

has some very nice fold flat card designs that can be carried in your pocket
too.
I've made some for my location just above the equator and it works!

Yes, I have one. It’s nice as a demonstrator - it fulfils all the design 
requirements of such a dial. But it is not precision made…
