Hi Roger
On Sundial Atlas there are now 375 sundials of Spain.
In these months they will be rising to about 1500 – 2000, thanks to the data of
a spanish user. These data are almost all of the northern Spain.
Other data will be added from the SAF register or other users of Sundial Atlas
(I added the sundials of Canary islands, 5 islands out of 7).
Another user has a complete archivie of the Balearic sundials, he thinks to add
them on the Atlas in the next future (in this case the only problem is having
the time to do it).
Sundial Atlas is 2 years old (on april 25th), now it has about 9300 sundials
with more than 19000 photos, the data are available in 5 languages, it has an
own server and it counts about 200 daily contacts.
I think it will show an interesting view of the spanish sundials within its
third year.
In the meanwhile all the contributes are welcome: I remember you Sundial Atlas
is NOT my website but a public tool, designed for the gnomonic comunity (not a
social network), available to the diallists and their associations as an open
project: use it and upload data on it, you will find what you look for, when
you need it.
Since a few months it is possible to enter with the level 3, to manage the
website. (users have level 1 to read data; after the log-in they have level 2
and they can upload data) With level 3, for example, it is possible to add a
new language, to menage the geographical data and other menagement functions
soon available; this level is available to the users or their associations with
the purpose to menage Sundial Atlas as an own tool.
I’m the webmaster and I develop the site with your suggestions.
ciao Fabio

Subject: Sundials in Mallorca
Hello Alexei,
There is some information available on the internet on sundials in Mallorca.
The best source is Joan Serra Busquets' website www.bernisol.cat There is a
wealth of information there so spend some time exploring. Joan (Juan, John) has
produced a quarterly journal Carpe Diem, 39 editions since 2002. The last
listed on the website is June 2011. The registry by Miguel is also noted on the
website. I was pleased to receive the DVD version with the 750 sundials
registered by 2006. DVD or pdf versions are available from Miguel. A couple of
tours are suggested on the website, the historical area of Palma with old
sundials and the ports with the modern sundials by Rafael. Another example of
information on the website is an article with pictures of the bifilar catenary
dial Rafael created at the University.
Societat Catalana De Gnomonica website www.gnomonica.cat has a limited registry
of 87 sundials in Mallorca. Most include a picture but little other information
on important things like location. Their map shows no sundials in Mallorca but
two in Menorca. There are only eight listed on the sundial atlas
http://www.sundialatlas.eu/ and only three on www.waymarking.com
I plan to produce a sundial trail with an interactive map for Palma and a
couple of other important locations as well as a presentation on Sundials in
Mallorca This would be similar what I did in Malta with your assistance. See
www.tinyurl.com/MaltaSundials My presentation at the NASS conference in 2010
presented the same information. Yes, I need to upload it to my website. By the
way, I met Sir Christopher Daniel at the BSS meeting in April. He was pleased
to here that his article on George Fenech's sundials that you sent me was the
reference document for your tour.

Roger Bailey

Thank you Roger,
Very interesting post indeed.
Are these sundials documented anywhere online?
Best regards,
Alexei

Long time correspondents on this mailing list may remember how a simple
question led to the development of the concept of seasonal markers for
analemmatic sundials around 2000-2001. Many gnomonists are adding these
seasonal markers to their analemmatic sundial designs. Now I know that this
concept was independently invented a few years before my publications.
