[pfSense Support] Dhcp server

2005-09-16 Thread Damien Dupertuis
Hello,

I love the abbility to add a static mapping to a mac
adress in the dhcp server but I saw that the only way
to actually make it works is by rebooting pfsense
every time you add an adress... otherwise even if you
ask for a new adress (client side), the dhcp dont
gives you the static one you just configured...

Maybe a future task for your already hudge to do
list ?

regards...

Damien

RE: [pfSense Support] Upgrade to 80.4 causes problems finding kernel

2005-09-16 Thread Oliver Stark
There seems to be definitely a glitch in the upgrade procedure, at least on
the older versions. Blank lines are inserted in the loader.rc making it grow
above a size where the loader cannot handle it any more. I guess, with a
file size of 784 bytes, you should be below this limit (Christian's
loader.rc was over 7kb, mine was over 14kb). Anyway, stripping out the blank
lines shouldn't cause you any harm.

It might also be interesting that people with recent installs have a look at
their loader.rc just after upgrades to make sure that the newer versions
don't behave the same way.

Just reporting, this problem happen to me too.

At first I installed version 74 and upgrading to 80.x
After 6 days, i try to reboot it, and reported kernel not found.

Cause it is on production network, i do not have time to trace.
So i just re-installed the iso i had (v 74) and reconfuguring it
all manually.
I tried the configuration.xml I downloaded 1 day before,
it could not work.

After all work properly, I upgraded it to 83.2
and now the /boot/loader.rc is in size 784

i just tried:
# grep -v '^$' loader.rc loader.rc.new
and have loader.rc.new is in size 346

So I think it is dangerous to reboot the gateway right now,
unless the problem is well known to be solved.

Subject: [pfSense Support] bridging WAN to LAN again

Hi,

I am trying to setup a firewall in bridging mode as apposed to using nat
basically, i want to:

1. Leave my severs on the LAN with their public facing Ips in the range
212.87.85.xxx 2. Configure the WAN to effectively filter/forward packets to
the servers on the LAN, just basic port blocking stuff

I've installed pfsense 0.84 and configured static ips on both the LAN WAN
and bridged the LAN WAN

From the LAN I can see out across the WAN as I have this default rule
on
the LAN

Prot: Source: Port: Destination: Port: Gateway: Description
* Lan NET  * * *   * Deafult Lan  any

Problem is I cannot get into the LAN from the WAN side at all, no ping, http
infact any protocol. I have the following rule on the WAN:

Prot: Source: Port: Destination: Port: Gateway: Description
*  ** Lan NET   *   *

Surley the above rule on the WAN side should let absolutley everything
through? I have read on the mailing list serveral posts regarding bridging.
I have only 2 interfaces in the dell server. Is the above scenario possible
with just two interfaces, if so should I have an IP address/gateway assigned
to the LAN?

Or do I need 3 interfaces? My knowledge of FreeBSD/Linux is quite limited
but I'm happy to send my XML config to any body who can help or point me in
the right direction

Maybe. Are you transferring data when the ping times
increase? More work is upcoming on the shaper to address some of
the local lan to local firewall speed issues (it's due to what's being
queued).

Monowall is more
more faster.

Bad comparison any more (and you don't explain what you mean
anyway). We have some significant technology differences from

When reporting bugs, please tell us how you got there, errors with no detail
don't help much. In this case, you had to have changed something as the
wizard creates clean, parseable rules by default. I understand the traffic
shaper stuff is somewhat touchy, but we need details.

Guys (developers and all those helpful on the list)

Sometimes it's nice to be reminded how much people appreciate you working on
a free opensource project!

I for one really love the work you guys do and I am sure many other users of
PfSense do as well.

So, even though you may feel pooped on, I am hear to tip my hat to you and
remind you that many others also appreciate what you do!

Keep on keeping on..

RE: [pfSense Support] Upgrade to 80.4 causes problems finding kernel

2005-09-16 Thread Oliver Stark
Scott,

My system was installed from scratch as 0.79.4 or 0.80. I don't remember the
exact release but I installed it from CD by the very end of August. Than I
upgraded to 0.82.4 and finally to 0.84. This is the 0.84 upgrade that broke
my boot up. The .70 estimate doesn't seem to fit my case...

These problems should be fixed on newer versions. I think the danger
still is present when you upgrade from 0.70.

There seems to be definitely a glitch in the upgrade procedure, at least
on
the older versions. Blank lines are inserted in the loader.rc making it

file size of 784 bytes, you should be below this limit (Christian's
loader.rc was over 7kb, mine was over 14kb). Anyway, stripping out the
blank
lines shouldn't cause you any harm.

It might also be interesting that people with recent installs have a look
at
their loader.rc just after upgrades to make sure that the newer versions
 don't behave the same way.
