[biofuel] Re: how to modify a diesel engine for biogas fuel

2004-03-18 Thread bazeeth ahamed

hi all
i want to know how to modify a diesel engine to work
on dual fuel(BIOGAS AND DIESEL).
kindly forward the links from where i can find the
details.

 Hello Theo

We are interested in planting jatropha curcas for
 producing our own
biodiesel and have found quite a bit of information
on the net but a lot of
it is conflicting. So we have a lot of questions
 that we need answering and
would appreciate any help in this regard. We are
 also looking for a place
to buy seeds, as there doesn’t seem to be place
 where we can purchase in
 South Africa.

 1. How much oil can we conservatively expect per
 hectare?
 2. Do cuttings give a lower yield than
 seedlings/seeds and does this last
over the life span of the tree?
 3. What is the ideal spacing for planting and what
 are the best conditions
 for growing and planting?
 4. How long does it take for the plant to yield
nuts and for how long will
 it produce?
 5. How often does the tree bear fruit?
 6. Is it necessary to irrigate to get the maximum
 yield?
 7. Must we protect the plant against specific pests
 and diseases?
 8. What can we do with the remains of the nuts
 after pressing
 them for oil?
 9. How much biodiesel can we expect to get out of
 processed oil?

 1. Why do you want to plant jatropha? High yield?

 2. Why do you want to plant a monocrop? Monocrops
 aren't sustainable
 - you'd want to produce sustainable biofuels via
 unsustainable ag
 methods?

Anyway, do an archive search for jatropha (without
 the quotes),
there's a lot of information there:
 http://infoarchive.net/sgroup/BIOFUEL/

 Including this:

Jatropha curcas is a good option, but there are
 many other good
options. The idea that it's the best option just
 doesn't take into
account how development projects work, if they work
 at all, and this
type of best technology thinking is one reason
 they often don't
work. Almost any locally grown crop would have more
 going for it,
regardless of Jatropha's yield and general
 usefulness. That's no
reason not to use Jatropha, but it has to be fitted
 in properly, and
once again full local involvement is essential for
 that to happen.

 Best

 Keith

[biofuel] suggestion for a beginner

2004-02-15 Thread bazeeth ahamed

I m a beginner in biodiesel field.
to start with i have used fryed(with beaf) groundnut
oil to make methyl ester.
To do the performance test on engine i need calorific
value of this ester.i have the following doubts
1. will the properties of ester affected due to
frying with beaf.
i will be gratefull if i get exact calorific value.
i have found the cv of ester of unused groundnut oil
as 39500kJ/kg

Yes, so you said. Nonetheless, I suggest you start
 at the beginning
rather then with an advanced method:

I am a fourth year student from the University of
 the Philippines and for my
thesis my adviser suggested making biodiesel and
 analysis of its
characteristics. We thought of using the procedure
 from the Philippine
Coconut Authority but when my adviser saw the
 Foolproof Method outlined in
Journey to Forever, she said it was a better
 method. The experiment will be
supervised by my thesis advisers; one of them
 specializes in organic
 synthesis.

The Foolproof Method acid-base process is about
 the best method
available, but it's an advanced method, as I said.
 It says this
 right at the top:

NOTE: The two-stage biodiesel processes are
 advanced methods, not
for novices -- learn the basics thoroughly first.
 The single-stage
base method is the place to start. Start here.

 Where do I start?

Have you or your thesis adviser who specializes in
 organic synthesis
 made biodiesel before?

I will be trying to make biofuel from coconut oil
 through the method
 suggested in journey to forever.

Which one? There are several, not all for novices.

it was stated there that product will be
allowed to stand for 3 weeks. is it possible to
 cut short this time?

Yes, after finishing the wash, try heating the
 biodiesel to 45 deg
C, if it goes cloudy again do it a second time,
 but it shouldn't go
cloudy after the first time - it would mean you
 should improve your
processing. You'll accomplish the same end in
 little more time
without using more energy for heating by letting
 it stand in the
 sunshine for a while.

But which process are you intending to use? Please
 give the url.

Please note what it says about the stoichometric
 ratio of methanol
 to coconut oil here:
 http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_meth.html
 How much methanol?

i have started to work on biodisel recently.
my plan is to compare the results of methyl and ethyl
esters of used groundnut oil.
i have prepared the methyl ester of fryed groundnut
oil and ethyl ester under progress.
i find difficulty in finding the properties of the
esters(like calorific value, cetane number etc)
kindly give me your sugestions.
