[biofuel] Re: Smithfield to Convert Hog Waste Into Fuel
-Must be something new where a methane rich source is converted to and oil. gaw -- In biofuel@yahoogroups.com, Steve Spence [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Smithfield to Convert Hog Waste Into Fuel By REUTERS HICAGO, Feb. 21 (Reuters) - Smithfield Foods Inc., the pork producer, said today that it would build a $20 million site in Utah that would use waste from 500,000 hogs to make biodiesel, a renewable fuel for vehicles. Biodiesel can be made from any fat including vegetable oil and used cooking oil. About 15 million gallons were used in the United States last year. Smithfield said it would be the major partner in BEST BioFuel, a partnership that will build the plant at Smithfield-owned swine production sites near Milford, Utah. Livestock waste can be a source of clean, renewable vehicle fuel, said Robert F. Urell, a Smithfield senior vice president. Construction is scheduled to start in April on the new site, pending final approval of a conditional use permit and a permit from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Smithfield's Utah swine operation produces about one million market hogs a year, and the biodiesel project will use the waste from about half of those hogs, the company said. [biofuel] used military engines/diesel
a few years back I purchased crate engine from a dealer of surplus military supplies for a large front end loader which one of my help had destroyed. The engine hour meter showed 8 hours which we thought to be faulty at best as surely the engine had been removed from something and crated up to be returned for overhaul. Well guess what? That engine is running as we speak and uses no oil and could not be better in any manner. That does not mean that all the us gov sells is good as I have seen another engine in a box that was in pieces when the seals were removed. thanks gaw Yahoo! Hey Keith, am I wrong in supposing that if the finished product were so expensive because it had to be hauled by truck that it would then be much cheaper to carry the alchol by tank car where an entire train could be made up of just tankers filled with the entire product. Or better yet, if they can pump crude through these pipelines, why not make a slurry of corn and water and pump it from Iowa to California and make the alcohol at the refinery? [biofuel] Re: Warren Still Design
I was sadly disappointed at the time I put together the warren still, yet after several emails and reading all posted about the unit I not only built one unit, I cut and was fitting the second unit as suggested by the author, as I tested the first. Since that time I have built every unit on the web where I can get plans, including the nixon stone unit, which by the way is a nice small unit. I mean small in production. If you are making product for your own use exclusively the output is sufficient and the purity is high, but. Due to unforseen medical problems I have not been able to finish converting my boiler from gas to electricity, and have therefor not finished testing a modular design of the plate still in four inch by five inch configuration. The initial test ran a small batch at 95 per cent, and as I am trying to build this as a continuous unit, I have the initial plumbing done, just not the controllers and thermostats to complete the package. thanks gaw -- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], Keith Addison [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello gaw The only part I am interested in is the automatic control. What kind of control was it? Where was it installed? Where was the sensor probe placed? I am working on building a fuel grade still and would be distilling larger volumes of wort. Any help would be appreciated George It's the first one on the list, the Penn Bradshaw, though I guess the other two would work just as well: Automatic temperature control valves http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_supply.html#valve The sensor's near the top of the reflux section. But this is a crude way of doing it. If you haven't already done so I suggest you have a look at Mike Nixon and Mike McCaw's The Compleat Distiller: http://www.amphora- society.com/The_Compleat_Distiller/the_compleat_dis tiller.html And at Tony Ackland's excellent site: http://homedistiller.org I'm very glad that Gaw's Charles 803 hasn't blown up. There were also other problems. One was that some people paid their money but never received any plans, their emails went unanswered and so on. Another was the steadily rising price for both plans and the valve - the second especially was unreasonably more than the cost from the supplier (not divulged, but that's the one, above). Other problems were that the list of materials was wrong (you'd be buying parts you didn't need, and not buying parts you did need) and didn't fit either the plans (which were not very clear at all) or the building instructions, which were also wrong, in quite a few ways, and very confused. I don't know how Gaw managed to build his still, must be because he has a lot of experience. I don't know of anyone else who succeeded, maybe nobody did. And Gaw's doesn't work as claimed, which is definitely not Gaw's fault but because it's a bad design. It's a dead end, a waste of time, junk. And a pollution of mailing lists. [biofuel] waste motor oil
In 1990 in the Salt Lake City Basin, Yellow Freight had almost two million gallons of underground diesel storage. Some one turned them in to the Environmental Control District for dumping the used motor oil into the underground tanks with only a rough screening to block large debris from entering as well. They were mixing the used oil fifty-fifty and it burned well. We (me) were in the service industry at that time one hundred miles from their terminal and noticed while doing work on the different vehicles the amount of oil around and about the fuel tanks and asked several driver about this. The long and the short of this story is they had to stop direct mixing and sent the oil to another faciility for additional treatment which non of the drivers knew of, but the used oil from 150 larged trucks with the average being 13 gallons was mixed and burned very well by a large company trying to cut costs. thanks gaw Yahoo!
