No matter the Japanese auto manufacturers spin it, the car is going to
be basically a machine for getting around. And always will play a role
in pollution and, in accidents. Transforming it into a friendly
companion ain't gonna change those facts. Perhaps they are mesmerized
by the Sony robots, nice doggy :) ...

Re: [Biofuel] Re-inventing the 3 wheel

2007-10-16 Thread AltEnergyNetwork

Regardless, there is plenty of room in the N. American
market for 3 wheelers, perhaps biodiesel hybrids
Personally, I think these particular models are kind of ugly
but I could see an independent co producing something
not so cutesey and more utilitarian. There is a Quebec entrepreneur who
makes three wheelers with motor cycle engines, only his design uses a single
massive back wheel and 2 smaller front wheels. He has sold several hundred at
$18,000 CAN each.
There is certainly a market for mail carriers, deliveries and such. Designed
well with the right kind of body shell these vehicles are kind of cool,

Re: [Biofuel] Re-inventing the 3 wheel

2007-10-15 Thread Dawie Coetzee
Forgive me if I am somewhat sceptical about anything the established motor
industry comes up with in this regard.

Allow me to suggest a few design guidelines to follow in any transform the
car exercise:

1. Don't worry too much about unit-specific emissions or fuel consumption -
within reason.

2. Design for the right uses (I've called them farming, firefighting, and fun),
and appropriately to the consequent intensity of use. Don't try to adapt the
car even better to the wrong uses, i.e. daily commuting and running urban
errands.

3. Design for durability, which means fixability, which means tamperability.

4. Design for small-scale, low-volume, diversified, local manufacture, for
stimulating the development of skills in communities, and for making the best
use of the labour, imagination, and creativity of free people.

Best regards

-Dawie

Re-inventing the 3 wheel

Behind the offerings is the growing view among Japanese
automakers that more must be done to fight the image of
cars as culprits of pollution, global warming and traffic accidents.

Their answer: Transform the car into a friendly companion
- not just a machine for getting around.

Hm, an old Messerschmitt, nice. I've seen a few of them around in
Japan, also old Heinkel bubblecars - actually 4-wheelers, two back
wheels close together. I haven't seen them on the road though, mostly
on display at specialist dealers. There's one quite near here.

But the Japanese K-cars, K-vans and K-trucks pretty much fit the
bill, though they're not as small as bubblecars. 3-cyl 660 cc
gasoline motors, economical and cheap, cheap to make and they're
subsidised in various ways. K-trucks can go just about anywhere, 4-wd
and very capable. They're small but they carry a lot. I don't see how
Japan would get along without K-trucks. They'd be in a much worse
position energy-wise, and with their Kyoto agreement carbon emissions
commitments. Pretty friendly companions.

But they don't export them. Second-hand K-trucks are exported though.

Best

Keith
