Belgium Works to Reduce Air Pollution

Wednesday December 10, 2003 1:46 PM

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Brussels city officaials Wednesday urged
motorists to leave their cars at home for the next few days and take
public transportation to work due to the rise in air pollution over
the Belgian capital.

According to the city's Institute for Management of the Environment,
the recent cold snap and lack of wind across Belgium has caused ``an
unfavorable effect on the spread of polluted air.''

The BIM-IBGE institute raised its pollution rating to ``very bad''
and said the levels ``could affect human health.''

The institute urged motorists not to drive into the city for the next
two days to try and lower pollutants being pumped into the air from
the cars.

This week's weather has seen temperatures drop to around -5 degrees
Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit). The stable Nordic air mass has
trapped pollution over the city, the institute said.

Officials expect the situation to change by the end of the week as a
warm front moves through, bringing with it wind and rain.
