[biofuel] Re: Military diesel motorcycles and other cool stuff...
I had heard that there was someone doing conversions in Germany, I wonder if that isn't the case referenced? At any rate it's quite easy, if you can handle the power issue, to put the factory identical Lombardini engine into an Enfield or any light bike. As a matter of fact a distrubutor picked up 40 suitable engines under a contract gone bad situation Ie. real cheap and is off-loading them for a heavy discount on ebay currently, search Lombardini. The engine/trans assembly appear stock. I found this in a basic web search a few years ago. An advantage of an FLH Harley frame is that it will accept a complete Turbo VW drive package. I saw it for my self in Ft. Collins Co. This thing was very well behaved (FAST) and not a huge engineering stretch. http://www.xmission.com/~redbeard Biofuel at Journey to Forever: http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel.html Biofuels list archives: http://archive.nnytech.net/index.php?list=biofuel Please do NOT send Unsubscribe messages to the list address. Re: [biofuel] Re: Military diesel motorcycles and other cool stuff...
Several years ago, I set out to build a diesel engine to a specification of 50 hp. from a 50 lb. mechanism. (7 lb/hp is more typical) It was about the size of a roll of paper twoels and perfectly balanced, weighed 53 lb. minus the fuel pump. While it was designed for unmanned aircraft, it would have been very suitable for a motorcycle or small car. We spent about $50,000 building a feasibility demonstrator, but, during testing, some metal chips in the oil damaged it beyond economical repair and we never developed full power. However, given funds, I'm confident the design could meet the specification. I'm not much on Monster Garage, but that's one episode I just _have_ to find! One thing's for certain, though. You DON'T want to drop that monster! I suppose, as simple as that engine is, it'd be easy to convert to ethanol, but I can't make ethanol easily, and I don't have a good source for it.
