[svg-developers] Re: Anyone used SVG GUI JS libraries from carto.net?
Hi Pascal I'd just seen you post and was in middle of writing to you when this came over. I apologise, I would speak to you in french but it certainly isn't good enough! :) Basically, using the example on the carto website I have tried to create a selectionlist, but without being able to see the init.js file for that selectionlist I then have tried to follow the code on the webpage. Problem with this is that I'm running into errors (particulary regarding declaring an array for the selectionlist to use) and could really do with a very simple working SVG example. With all my coding I tend to look at examples, play with them and see the effects. In this case I've done that with other GUI libraries and it's worked out perfectly. Olaf, THANK YOU! This is just the file I was looking for. I know this is going to sound stupid but where did you get this file from? I had tried to recreate the array for fruits when defining a new selectioninfo but for some reason it kept coming up with array not defined errors...So I presumed there might be something else in the init.js file I was missing so I got hold of you guys here. Thank you for the responses. I have a some SVG enabled browsers that I have downloaded that I'm going to play around with over the weekend so hopefully it'll be all thumbs up... :) In particular, thank you for the advice on JS, if I run into trouble I'll be more prepared for it than if I hadn't had known. [svg-developers] Adobe SVG Replacement??
Since we've cut this topic to death I thought I'd ask about the practicality of moving from Adobe SVG viewer to an alternate and which one suits the bill. I have only ever used the Adobe SVG Viewer for all my work/play. Moving to another viewer/browser I am wondering how this will impact on my code. I used PHP extensively to generate SVG code and rely on the SVG Viewer to render the data. Which product do you all feel will be the natural replacement for this kind of reliance, or whether they're all pretty much the same and one just needs to choose and move on? I'm interested about native browser support since I can roll out the relevant browsers to users without too much of a hassle, but at the same time, I'd rather have the user use whatever browser they want to and still be able to view/edit SVG data. Bruce, Thank you. The SVG site looks really good. I'll have a look at this. But I'm still trying to work out if there is a quick one function to do this all in that I can put together...the code on the project is getting large and cumbersome Ben - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo! [svg-developers] Re: Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer
Hi all, I'm just in the process of developing an SVG application using AJAX and PHP for a client. The idea of Adobe backing out of the Adobe SVG field is causing some concern and to be honest I'd like to know what real options are available out there otherwise I'll be tempted to move over to Flash MX. The real bonus for this product I'm developing is indeed cost, it's practically free BUT I need to know that the application based on SVG is going to be suitable for the client long into the future. If I can't gurantee that, then I need to look for a solution that is more long-term. What effect is the loss of Adobe SVG plugin going to have on coding? Will my javascript/php code need to change? Will I need to make changes to the servers to allow new SVG plugins/browsers to work? Will I have to install anything new, complicated onto users machines? Will SVG remain widely supported by the open source community? I feel very much as though I should stop current development before I've invested too much time in a solution that is not suitable or worse sustainable. SVG has been a life-saver and to think I might have to move over to another product kinda annoys the hell out of me. [svg-developers] Creating thematic colour range for SVG document (clientside)
Hi all, I'm sure this is possible. In fact, dead sure...but just wanting to know if there is an efficient way of doing it. I have an SVG document made up of polygons, each polygon has a value. I want the user to click on a drop down menu asking for how many bands (1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc) they want coloured and then colour each polygon according to the value and which band it falls within. All this will need to be done client-side. Has anyone done this before? In effect, for any GIS users out there...this is basically thematic mapping for SVG using Javascript. Re: Rép. : [svg-developers] Creating thematic colour range for SVG document (clientside)
Jérôme, Yes, I was thinking of a line by line approach but wondered whether anyone had an algorithm or function that could do this with the minimum of fuss. My biggest concern is generating unnecessary code and I'd like it as streamlined as possible. [svg-developers] Re: SVG and Web Mapping Servers
Hi, In response to the Geoserver vs MapServer post: Actually I've found Mapserver to be irritating. After downloading the windows installer and setting it up, it doesn't fully work and you have to download all these additional *nix libraries for a variety of ad hoc sites and compile then as though you are a *nix expert to even get it to produce a single PNG fileI'm not a *nix expert, so I've found Mapserver sitting on my laptop doing nothing at all until I can spend time trying to get stuff to compile the *.h files. Since I don't have VC++ or nmake it's a bit of a mission and time for me is difficult to get hold of. I don't mind it being in one or another, but there is definitely a bias towards *nix users (which is fair enough) but for win users just getting the stuff up and running is a battle I'm going to try and get Geoserver running and see if I can dent that a bit better...otherwise I'll have to find a *nix guru and get them to help me out. [svg-developers] SVG and Web Mapping Servers
Firstly, Thank you for the pointers to PostGIS/PostgreGIS...I've download the installers and will have a crack at playing around with it. One issue though: I'm slightly confused to the point of a web mapping server. I understand it's an engine that is used to send data to the browser but from the examples I have seem using postgis and mysql; the data is stored in the database and fetched with each request? Why not use a simple php/mysql setup with the geometry data stored in mysql? Can anyone help me out. I think I'm missing a crucial piece of the puzzle. So far I have: 1. PHP (server side scripting) interacts with the database 2. Mysql/PostgreGIS/PostGIS store geometry (is this basic text or a physical object?) 3. Web Mapping engine controls this interface. Right or wrong? Is there any definitive articles on the basics of this process? I do want to keep loads and loads of spatial data in a database and then request segments to the web seamlessly. [svg-developers] Re: SVG and Web Mapping Servers
Right, So let me see if I've got it: The database (backend) eg. Mysql/postgis holds both spatial data and potentially attribute data (eg, street coordinate pairs and street names). The WMS goes to the database, takes the spatial data and any potential attribute data (depending what is requested) and creates a map (either raster or vector)? This is merely a map, but when you ask it to label a road, it is in fact going back to the db and create a map object and adding to the SVG image (ignoring raster maps for the moment). To get data from the database, it's a simple case of extracting rows of attribute data and displaying them? Server-side scripting (php/perl, etc) deals with the basic linking of the WMS and database? with client-side scripting providing the basic bells and whistles. So in fact, spatially aware tables contain text values that are setup specifically to be extracted and mapped by the WMS? So if I wanted to map a series of roads using WMS and a postgis. I'd need to insert rows of line statements (as spatial objects or in a spatial column) in the correct spatial line format (as defined by different dbs?) If I'm right with the above...excellent!! I have MapServer and PostGIS-so I just need to get the basics right! Thank you for taking the time to explain it. - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo!
