Re: [svg-developers] Re: Adobe extends ASV customer support again

2007-08-24 Thread Leonard Rosenthol
Mars does NOT use WebKit. It does, however, share some technology with
ASV. Remember that Mars' use of SVG is strictly for static page description
and does not include any of the more dynamic aspects (ie. no filters or
scripting).

AIR, however, does use WebKit - though versioin 1.0 will not include SVG
support.

 Leonard,

First of all, thank you for replying.

Then I understand that SVG support in Mars is through webkit, like for
 AIR, since you
probably estimated that ASV is not anymore up to the task. You must have
 noticed in fact
that the couple webkit/Safari is probably a dozen times faster in
 rendering and probably
several hundred times faster in interpreting; really close, if not
 superior to compiled
languages (win 32 2.2GHz mono. I'll be happy to point you to visual
 evidence). This is at
least my fresh experience with Safari 3.0.3.

If you can confirm the use of webkit with Mars, then what does supporting
 ASV mean? My
reasoning is that the explanation is in Mr Ferraiolo's post 59149. Between
 Apple, that was
overlooked, and Java FX, Adobe and MS are bound to be in a very
 uncomfortable position
sooner than expected, due to their invalid strategies. The Flash
 acquisition excitement
having died out, plus the reality that Flash will never be able to attract
 talented
composers, apart from simple illustrators (if you care I could provide you
 with proven and
irrefutable philosophical arguments that anticipated and corroborate the
 actual evidence),
made that Adobe decided to play in two different pictures, but in a
 dubious way, by
adopting Open Source technology, vuluntarily amputating it to suit it's
 blameful strategy
(deactivation of SVG, followed by contradictory statements, or shall I say
 lies (personal
evidence)) and giving in counterpart some proprietary technology to the
 Open Source
which really hides an overcalculated return investment. At that level to
 call it machiavelism
would mean to offend Macchiavelli. Adobe is naif in thinking that people
 are naif and
cannot do 2+2. For similar reasons, being aware that the clients cited by
 Mr Ferraiolo will
turn away sooner than later from ASV, Adobe wishes legitimately to make
 them think that
it is still supporting them. On the other end you seem to think that ASV's
 development will
not be pursued. So, what do we gain? We are supposed to keep ASV warm with
 nothing in
return, perhaps putting a hold on the devastating advance of Opera and
 especially Apple
 webkit.

In reality, way sooner than Adobe or MS can anticipate Safari will
 completely replace IE
with strong Opera and FF behind. Adobe wanted to prematurely kill their
 wonder child ASV
because they lost their minds (you can tell by the choice of their France
 head, the Leader
Price type of jerk manager who puts on a light and sound show of the 80's
 type, proudly
announcing that the kids want videos and Adobe is going to give it to
 them, or something
like that. I couldn't split because I was crucified on my chair and also
 because I was
interested in seeing how low humans can get). Now Adobe wants to try to
 bring it back to
life without putting any investment in it, by simply counting on OUR
 support. I'm sorry, I
was an unconditional ASV aficionado for seven years, but overnight I
 adopted Safari, and
to a lesser extent Opera, and I'm afraid this is irreversible unless Adobe
 makes a real effort
and adopts an honest and transparent strategy in respect to ASV and all
 the rest of the
 bazar.

Even if it's off topic I have to say this, it's insane to think that a
 mammoth company can
develop its strategy based simply on commercial considerations, refusing
 to assume the
burden of the sociological status that was bestowed on it. Maybe Adobe
 hasn't realized yet
what kind of a giant it has become, and still has to learn how to behave
 like one. People
want giants to be gentle giants, otherwise they destroy them. Adobe has a
 few specimens
of older giants around it to learn from.

I am perfectly aware that you may not be allowed to reply to this in a
 clear and
straightforward manner, given the traditional Adobe's omerta policy,
 although you seem
to be a sincere and cool person. After all we just need to see how
 loquacious Mr Ferraiolo
has becaome on the subject since after he split.

Thank you for your attention and best regards,

 Domenico Strazzullo

2007-08-23 Thread Richard Pearman
Hi,

I don't know Adobe's plans but I'm still planning on changing my main
SVG design environment from IE+ASV to whatever reaches a similar (or
better) standard first. Of course this might be my opinion e.g. I
really need an environment which can also display (X)HTML so Squiggle
is out (at least the last version I tried) and I need something that
can use JavaScript, filters etc.. I can probably live without Markers
(I've used them once) and Masks.

The only thing which could make me change my mind is if all development
on Renesis, browsers with native support etc. stops and/or Adobe brings
out a better version of ASV.

Domenico,

Unfortunately not. The only thing that has changed with this
announcement is that Adobe Customer Support will field support cases
for the existing Adobe SVG Viewer for an additional year, until
January 1, 2009. There will be no further releases of Adobe SVG
Viewer.
