[swinog] SwiNOG #37 postponed due to COVID-19

Dear Community

After careful consideration of risks and benefits and with a heavy
heart, we have decided not to go forward with SwiNOG #37 in May 2020 due
to the highly uncertain situation regarding the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The
critical factors are the travelling, the restrictions placed on events
by the government and first and foremost our concern for the health and
safety of all our attendees and speakers.

We are currently talking to our sponsors and partners to find a solution
on how to proceed. We are very sorry we can't give you the great
conference in May that many of you have been eagerly anticipating. We do
hope you understand that this was, in every way, a very tough decision
for us to make. We are trying to do the right thing by putting the
health of all of us first.

Instead of the two meetings in May and November, we plan for one big
Event on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020.

If you have any question do not hesitate to contact us.

ein Vernehmlassungsverfahren durchzuführen.

Die Vernehmlassung dauert vom 7. Juni bis am 28. September 2019 und die

La consultazione si svolge dal 7 giugno al 28 settembre 2019 e i progetti di

We have reports of troubles accessing the swinog blacklists.
Did SWINOG change Nameservers lately?


Indeed. We were cleaning up a lot of 10+ years old configurations over 
the last month...

whois show cyon operating the swinog.ch DNS Servers and there the glue
records look right. > Uhm, die cyon delete the glue records right now?


We take this issue offline for fixing.

...and when you are trying to debug AS112 stuff you normally also want
to try to run this:

This will surface the name of the node you are ending up with. Running a
traceroute will probably not help so much because, as you already
correctly stated, this is an anycasted ip-address. It may point you into
the right direction, but it might as well misguide you.

Re: [swinog] Anyone round Zurich with an OTDR and a little bit of time?

Hello André

 I'm trying to debug a fiber connection between two datacenters in
 Zurich.

 We got a 1Gbps dedicated Layer2 Connection incl. Managed Switch from
 Init7. 

As a first step you probably want to fact check if you have a
darkfibre, which might be measured with a power meter and/or OTDR, or
if you have a layer-2 service as you worte above.

A layer-2 service means there is some active gear (usually from your
service provider) in between you and the physical fibre between the
datacenters which they manage and therefore you can not optically
measure the line as a whole.

 If I put everything together, I still see a notconnect on the
 switchport. 

As a simple test: see if you see have no light (down/down) at both ends
of your connection. My guess: it's only at one end and you most probably
deal with a defective optic (GBIC/SFP) at some point...

Bottom line: most probably you will have to deal with your service
provider.

 It would probably be much better to start using ntpd on this 
 server. It is not the first time, that this has happen to the IRC 
 Server.

As already commented off-list to others: ntpd was running on that box
before and it is running now again. I assume the issue we had with our
VMware-Platform last week was the cause of this.

 There's an issue around that the IRC Channel #swinog is in a splitted 
 state (Link between irc.humppa.ch and irc.swissix.ch).
 
 The reason: It seems that irc.swissix.ch NTP/date is out of sync.

 Yes, it is an EXTREMELY UGLY HACK. 

 Just set up netgear.com on our cache DNSes. 
 I see the client's request for time-g.netgear.com is now being replied with 
 157.161.1.4 (our NTP server), but those clients still are not happy and keep 
 sending up to hundreds of request/s.

Well, bad luck with this hack then. :-(

Apparently this was already pointed out by Beat Bodenmann shortly after
my mail.

Hey All

If it is really hurting you big time you may choose to run a very mean
hack: temporarily setup a netgear.com-Zone on your dns-servers and point
these records to a useful NTP server. Adding an A-record for their
website would probably a good idea as well. ;)

Yes, it is an EXTREMELY UGLY HACK. But as stated above: it might be
easier to cut yourself a hand off than loosing the whole arm...

 but what's the hex string for this kind of query. 
 anybody got it?

 statement to the Swiss ITU delegation (please note that I left the SwiNOG 
 core team 1y ago). SwiNOG needs to speak in a united voice in this matter.

I might remember you of one specific article of the SwiNOG charter
(http://www.swinog.ch/charter/index.asp) about such situations:

Hello Benoit

 Our Customers ADS Server keeps autocreating one records like this:
 gc._msdcs.web.EXAMPLE.COM 1800 IN A 192.0.2.44

Which is kinda expected for an Active Directory DNS Zone. In fact what
you see here is actually a glue record for the whole AD-part, as the
_msdcs-part, which contains all the super duper secret special sauce of
Active Directory, is a sub-zone within the named ad-zone.

So basically your customer made the error to use a real-world zone name
(EXAMPLE.COM) as his AD-Name instead of EXAMPLE.LOCAL which would stay
internal and have another, non ad-zone configured for the external domain.

It all comes down to the point that you should never try to use BIND as
a secondary DNS of an AD-Zone as Microsoft apparently violate the RFCs
as you already pointed out.

 actually there's usually much more information than just country code.
 At least sites like http://adultfriendsfinder.com/  show my town quite
 precisely, and my IP is a part of a
 huge Cablecom pool.

I am actually not fully satified with the quality of those ads.

When I still resided somewhere between Baden and Bremgarten I was
recognised as Otelfingen (not a real surprise with a
Cablecom-connection, right?).

Since I changed to our own VDSL I seem to live in Therwil (BL) according
to the ads. That's over two years now. And I do certainly not speak
'Baseldiitsch'.

OTOH I actually do not really care about those personal-ads anyway. ;)

I assume most of the geo-ip-stuff is based loosely on RIPE-DB. But I am
pretty sure you need a few month until changes in RIPE-DB will be
reflected in the geo-ip-databases.

Seen that before. A customer got a PI-Allocation which before was
present in Belguim. The Google frontpage was looking very different
because they lost a case in court and had openly to appologize. :)
A few month after changing the location in RIPE-DB the problem was solved.


So either you can persuade the opeator of that site to update his own
location-db or simply wait a few month. YMMV.

 Now we have a customer located in Germany, so I created a
 inetnum-block with his subnet in ripe-db with country-code DE.

Just one last thought: is this customer really located in Germany? I
mean: I have customers which are registred in Panama or on Mauritius (no
kidding!) still I set the country-code for these networks to Switzerland
because the users of those IPs (the servers actually) are here in
Switzerland.

 irc.swinog.ch not reachable - you have any traceroute output?

As a result of a DDoS against the SwissIX IP-Range the prefix of SwissIX
is at the moment only reachable by its peers.

We are working towards bringing the irc-server back online. But in the
mean time eiher use another server of the mesh or have a
SwissIX-connected ISP ;).

 Sunrise changed their as-communities recently so that's no longer
 possible for our backup provider to influence their local-pref.

Did you tried to mark your routes with the L3-communities for
local-pref? There is a good chance your transit-providers will leave
them on your route and thus make you able to influence your routing
within L3.

 tried it from Netstream, Cablecom, mhs and Hosteurope. It seems to be
 working sometimes, although very rarely and slow.

 But the pollux.swissix.ch machine doesn't seem to have a route back

As I explained in another mail already we are probably hit by a
kernel-bug which is corrupting the ipv6 kernel-routingtable altough the
bgpd-routingtable has a correct view of the world. We are working on
this issue and will keep you posted.

 I noticed that you are using an IXP prefix for your webserver.

Yes, that's correct.

 Looking at SixXS' distributed looking glass[1], I see that still many
  ISPs are not accepting this /48 into their routing tables (and in my
  opinion, rightfully so). The IXP prefixes were not meant to host 
 services in, rather only to make sure switch fabric is using a
 globally unique prefix (which comes in handy with stuff like DNS and
 ICMP unreachables and the like). I think that RIPE NCC has mentioned
 something to that effect when 2001:7f8:24::/48 was allocated.

So, yes, you're right, there might be some networks that will not route
our ipv6-prefix. Thank you for pointing this out. OTOH we had, have and
most probably will operate some services for our members running in that
ip-space (also reachable via ipv4).

Running these services in another ip-space would afford some entity to
sponsor the service and hardware or housing while, at the moment, some
peers are generously sponsoring some upstream and we can take care of
the rest. Since the later option is a very short amount of work for the
sponsors I guess it will stay this way. I think the board maybe will
have to consider to stop running the services on IPv6 for the sake of
availability. OTOH I'd be interested to hear if any of our peers is
blocking our prefix since they are the main audience for our services...

We use http://smslink.sourceforge.net/ with an siemens gms-modem on
rs232. The software is pretty simple but dows the job. The main
drawback is imo the time needed to handoff an sms to the smsc. But
this seems to be a gsm-problem which cannot be circumvent when using a
gsm-modem and if you are not sending out a lot of sms it does not
really hurt.

Yes, we had such a setup for quite a long time for connecting two 
routers back-to-back without a leasedline with serial-interfaces. It 
was somehow more a case of 'we have the interfaces already so why should 
be buy some new ethernetinterfaces when the cables cost not even 10% of 
the interface-price' than a 'there is no other way to do it' case tough.


But IMO such setups are more a lab-thing than real-live stuff in nowadays.
