Thus, Robert Boyle’s “house of experiment” has been looted for the various ways it could be “managed” – its output “witnessed” and its access “controlled” – to secure experiments among sociabilities instantiating the political priorities of the restored Stuart monarchy. But even in the wake of the civil war, it was not long before experiments could be seen emerging from settings of conflict and chaos, settings evincing the fragility of the new order. Experiments were not only conspicuously associated with such troublesome settings, they often depended on them for their very performance. In this talk, I will look at how the dispersal of experiments into these less sanctified corners of metropolitan life, and their entanglement with perceived threats to the restored peace, could produce scepticism about the worth of experiment itself. Rather than viewing experiments as a solution to the problem of social order, I will explore how disorder could be one of their most essential and provoking features.
