[OSM-talk] 3 months of osm
Hi all, It's really been quite a long time without keeping in contact with the osm list(s), but osm activities have been taking place since February when i last posted here, about a mapping day at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono, where the availed imagery was used by the students to map features at thier University here. The imagery quite alligned with the gps tracks at 3meters accuracy, and it's the imagery that was mostly used. We communicated with Andy Allan, as we were to map the new transportation network of pioneer easy buses operating in the capital city of Uganda Kampala, and some of the collected data can be clearly visible on the transport layer of osm, here too. In April, when the OSM database was undergoing maintenance we had scheduled another mapping day on the same date as the database maintenance, with Kibo foundation in Uganda, so mapping never took place. More activities are to take place, and all updates (early or late) will be shared with the list. This is all in a drive to make OSM a usable map for every one, and also to provide freely accessible, accurate data that can be used for and by various organisations, individuals, and countries. Just wondering could some one share all categories of information that can be mapped to osm? Am 27. April 2012 11:01 schrieb Douglas Musaazi douglasmusa...@yahoo.com: Just wondering could some one share all categories of information that can be mapped to osm? basically there are no limits, you can map all categories of information, as long as the features: - are more or less permanent - are suitable to be represented with vectors - do relate to some geographical property or object with geographical qualities more information can be found here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Any_tags_you_like There is a list of the main features here in the wiki: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features (I guess you know this page?) and by searching the wiki for terms you will find other tags as well, either as feature definitions, or as proposals. To get an idea how established they are, you can have a look at taginfo to see the actual use: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.de/ (this is also an interesting to find tags that aren't yet documented). If you have something to map and you can't find a suitable tag the best thing IMHO is to ask on the mailing list (tagging) [1] if there is already a mapping schema for it, or to discuss with other mappers what would be the best new tagging schema for this feature. Please note that not all information present in the database will also find its way on every map rendering created from that data. Some information will be more relevant for routers then for renderings (e.g. maxspeed, surface, access-restrictions), or might be relevant for geocoding (addresses). Keep in mind that what you see on the mapnik rendering on our website is not the only representation of the data (see also http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tagging_for_the_renderer ) cheers, Martin [1] http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/tagging ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Also, one could just remove type=boundary (since it isn't really a boundary) and name=something from the relation/ways so they don't show up on any renderer. You could put a description=* tag instead or some nonstandard one. - Original Message - From: Toby Murray toby.mur...@gmail.com To: OSM Talk talk@openstreetmap.org Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 7:14 AM Subject: [OSM-talk] Islands that will vanish in the license change Thanks to Paul Norman's efforts and visualizations based on it[1], I've now added to the CT-only coastline error checker map [1] my estimation of island ways which might be at risk of deletion. I've tried to identify all ways taged with natural = coastline, created by someone who has not agreed to the CT's, and which are not marked odbl=clean . I'm afraid that dispalying this number of points has impacted performance when viewing the map in IE. As Toby reported, most of the problematic ways are around Australia. (Note that although the island points layer is based on this mornings' data, other error layers are based on data from 19 April) David there has been a lot of activity in remapping coastlines lately and a lot of improvement. However one loophole that Paul's method does not detect is islands that will have their coastlines vanish completely. I decided to take a look at this tonight. So far I have come up with a pretty hackish way of looking at things... but I think it might still be of use. I downloaded all natural=coastline ways from my jxapi. Then I split the world into 4 parts to make them small enough for me to open in JOSM. Then I selected all objects that were last touched by an accepting user and purged them from the data set. What is left is all ways that were last touched by a decliner. Some of these are actually OK from a license standpoint. Maybe the decliner just deleted a tag or added some nodes in the middle of a way which will obviously distort the geometry but the coastline topology will remain intact so they don't show up in Paul's files. Also, some things that I purged may still be heavily impacted or even completely removed by the license change if they were created by a decliner but last touched by someone else. So it isn't perfect. The south/west quadrant of the world is actually pretty much good to go. I already fixed a few islands. The north/west one is still a little large so I may have to do some more tinkering there. The one I have ready to go right now is south/east (Australia) and I saw this topic come up in the talk-au archives a few days ago so I thought I would go ahead and share. Perhaps someone who is subscribed to talk-au can forward this? What I have is a ~10MB .osm file containing 537 ways (plus some stray nodes that should just be ignored): http://ni.kwsn.net/~toby/OSM/coastline_SE_bad.osm.gz This file covers from the equator to the south pole and from 0 to 180 longitude so it is more than Just Australia although that is the most impacted area. The way to use this would be to download it and open it in JOSM. Then do a type:way search and run the license plugin on that. Then just look for the big red blobs. DO NOT use this layer to edit and upload or terrible things are likely to happen. Use it only as a guide to find trouble spots. I set the upload=false flag in the file so JOSM should be very clear about this if you try to upload from this layer. So download a problem area to a new layer and replace dirty coastlines to your heart's content. The biggest blob of red is on the northeast side of Australia. Some of them are random rocks along the coastline that cover a few square meters. Some are large islands. Unfortunately it looks like Bing isn't good enough to retrace some of these but I'm hoping the locals may have other sources. After this successfully processes, the rest of the data set can be processed to completion. I'm sorry to be dramatic, but this is scarily imprecise! What happened to the idea of giving notice before working on the live database? What about the areas of the world previously identified where there is a large percentage of data that would be redacted? This is UNACCEPTABLE to mappers in those areas, as it should be to the rest of the project. To be honest this is the first time I dive into implementing the near by feature. Does it have any other name apart from near by ? I couldn't find much related to OSM in this topic, but maybe because my search was a bit narrow. I'm not sure if I'll implement pedestrian paths, it depends on how complex/possible it is to do it on a mobile device. For the moment I just have the tiles for the area I need (Buenos Aires Capital) and draw some markers using vectors from the OpenLayers mobile lib. Are there other ways other than generalizing on n-meters around the point where the user is? What are crow files? Sorry for my ignorance, if you can point me to some docs on this topic I will avoid doing basic questions :) Second, if the phone has a list of POIs, I wonder if some of them should also be in the OpenStreetMap data base? Are these generally-interesting POIs or POIs that should not be included in OSM? The POIs are loaded by us. Not sure if these are called POIs as well, as I'm guessing a POI is a somewhat well-known and pre-defined location on the map. In our case, the 'POIs' are determined by us, and very likely they are not part of OSM, as they are mainly restaurants and hotels which have an agreement with us to appear on the app. To simplify (without thinking of pedestrian paths) do you think there's a way I can show our custom POIs near by the user's current location? It sounds like we don't disagree about very much. I hate these mantras map what's on the ground and don't map for the renderer, because they're apt to be misunderstood and over-applied. I see this very much as an edge case, and I can see arguments for including the connecting segments in an official named route like this one. Cool. Adding physical infrastructure is always useful. It never does any harm. Sometimes exhaustively listing every unofficial (but on the ground) walking track in a park can just create messy confusion. But, yes, generally. Every bad route we add severely diminishes the value of the good ones, and we see this happening already in Sydney. There is a signed cycle route heading down Parramatta Rd at Croydon. This is a 3 lane, very narrow laned road with heavy vehicles and high traffic volumes. If we mark that in OSM in a cycle route, we may as well give the game away. Here, I disagree. You obviously have an interpretation of what a bike route should be (safe, for starters). But I think if the authorities have decided a bike route goes down a busy road, then we should follow that. If you're seriously arguing against mapping this route, aren't you contradiction your map what's on the ground philosophy? Signs are on the ground. I've no idea how you allow unofficial routes to be used in moderation. How do you decide which to keep? How do you decide who gets to decide? One thing I can say: just because you (or I) don't know the answers to questions, doesn't mean something is a bad idea. In any cases, the answers are probably the community decides, if and when it becomes a problem. Would OSM really be a better project if we were to do a data import from bikely? I can't see that going well. Let's be careful with cycle routes in Australia. Nah. Compared to organised countries like the UK or Germany, we have little infrastructure, no wide-scale consistency, and few published conventions to follow. Until the day comes when there exists something like the LCN/RCN/NCN system, we're going to have to use liberal interpretation to achieve a useful result. The cycle facilities are sparse compared to the bicycle signs and council routes. There is no central coordinating or certifying authority. I'd argue against adding personal routes, add the physical information for a router instead. Automatic routers are just one audience. Humans are another. Provide route information for humans, and let the computers ignore it. This information is far more valuable, and as a project it plays to our It's not an either/or situation. strengths. I'd also argue against adding other routes where no cycle facilities exist, or the route is dangerous. Particularly where the information is source from council maps that aren't recently updated, or from bicycle signs that point off a main road or cycleway. Right. You'd like to use interpretation and subjectivity as well.

Dies könnte man abgestuft machen.

-- Nicolas Dumoulin ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr

Re: [Talk-GB] Permissive paths and uncrecorded rights of way
Hi Rob, Thanks for the question - It's a good example of how the wiki can be confusing so I encourage everyone to write in with suggested improvements. You've had some good answers so I won't repeat them, instead I'll add a couple of details: * Please only tag as a public right of way if there is evidence (if none then you can just leave it as highway=*, where * is an appropriate tag). * Public rights of way are recorded by the local council on the Definitive map and statement. I am pulling all the details together and will contact all England councils asking for access to the definitive statements (and requesting its release under the OGL license). This will be the topic of a later email and will be summarised on the wiki. * Any path not recorded on the councils definitive map and statement by 2026 will no longer be a public right of way - Once we have these statements I encourage you to write to the council about missing footpaths (details to follow). For now you can make use of note=, fixme= and perhaps suspected=row as suggested by Nick. Cheers, RobJN p.s. I will incorporate your suggestions into the wiki page next week so that it is easier to understand. Re: [Talk-GB] Using UK v GB for uk speed limit tags
Good question. I had a quick look on google and found the following website: http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/speed-limits-how-they-are-set One particular quote is of interest: Although national speed limits can be set for Northern Ireland separately from the rest of the UK, it is current practice for those operating in GB to be replicated here for consistency. Maybe that doesn't help! Personally I would stick with UK unless the above practice is changed. (In any case as you have pointed out it can be argued that it doesn't matter as these tags can be automatically changed based on location) Regards, RobJN ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Answers I received about the designation tagging included things like included on Notts CC's definitive map as a byway and from a Definitive map modification order from 2006 (in both cases I asked about verifiability and licence suitability but received no further reply). I've not received a reply about the bridleway-to-track changes, and problematical edits are still being made. My concern about the designation changes is obviously that they've been copied from another source that might not be licence-compatible. The removal of existing tags is a different problem, that of deleting people's previous hard work (where ways have been merged and subsequently re-edited it's not straightforward just to add back previous tags). What would people recommend as the next step? I'd write to him again explaining that what he is doing is damaging (deleting tags, merging ways, etc) and in breach of copyright (Nots CC's definitive map is Crown Copyright and he appears unable to produce a valid licence). Ask him to voluntarily cease making changes and reiterate your offer or help and guidance should he wish to continue to contribute. If you can demonstrate that you've made him aware of the problem but he is unwilling to engage in discussion or modify his behaviour then in my view it is vandalism and you have reasonable grounds for asking the Data Working Group to take action. Have there been any similar edits over the border in Leicestershire? It does seem strange to me that any new map modification orders have been made since 2006 that change a bridleway into a BOAT (byway), it really would be going against the trend of creating 'restricted bridleways'. Until I moved to Shropshire last summer, I was a ramblers group footpath secretary and in that period never saw any such orders. I feel sure we would have heard of such things happening in an adjoining county. If any such edits have occurred in Leicestershire, I still have friends there to check their validity. That of course doesn't alter the fact that the definitive map is crown copyright and if there is nothing on the ground, we should not map it. I would however strongly lean towards the opinion that if the bridleway signs, and blue waymarks, still exist then there has been no map modification order. On the Leic / Lincs border, yes. A track I walked down and identified as a bridleway back in 2010 (I still have the Garmin file with the waypoint in it) has recently had the designation removed, and tracks nearby have been merged together so that the surface tag now reads something like X;Y;Z. It does seem strange to me that any new map modification orders have been made since 2006 that change a bridleway into a BOAT (byway), it really would be going against the trend of creating 'restricted bridleways'. The modification order was apparently for a Notts one (and in this case may perhaps be valid); my question for that particular change was whether it would be licence-compatible. However, many of the changes elsewhere don't match previous on-the-ground surveys. If any such edits have occurred in Leicestershire, I still have friends there to check their validity. Edits have been made across England - I'd urge everyone with an interest in such matters to check for local changes along the lines that I've described by previously unseen mappers. Re: [Talk-us] Fresno castradal imports
Thanks for everyone's comments. I do take pride in making sure my imports are good. That said I realize there are issues with the Fresno import, one of my first imports. But I am not sure if we need to throw out the baby with the bath water just yet. If it comes to that, fine. I think the problems with the import can be fixed. I am surprised it took two years to mention and then from a person from Canada who I guess is doing a review for the license. So to address some of the issues for Fresno County: The consensus is against dumping castradal data into OSM. Consensus by who? There have been many cases where it has been used effectively. Sometimes it is the only way to go because some areas can't be mapped by hand or are so vast they are impossible. Sure, it shouldn't be just dumped in, but if it is selectively added it can be beneficial. Landuse is beneficial because it tells you where you can or cannot go and makes the map more usable. With parcel data, address data can later be added making the map routable. I don't buy the argument that having too much data is a bad thing. If that is the case, we might as well all stop editing the map altogether. Eventually as more and more people join, people will add items to the map anyway. You can't have all white areas forever. The data shouldn't be too over digitalized, But being under digitalized can be just as bad. There has to be a mix. I like the idea of having a filter for people who need to download larger areas. No documentation or community consultation. When I did the import, there weren't really any active mappers in the county. I try to consult local users when doing imports because they often have good suggestions about ways to handle certain areas or know what has been done locally. Unlike with Europe, there are many counties in the U.S. that don't have any active mappers, making it tough to establish a consensus. That is something we need to figure out a way to solve. One trick I've used is to move my location marker each time and then see all the users around and what they are doing. Maybe in the future there could be some type of host site where people can comment on imports in an organized way and search for things near by them and comment on them or offer to help importing. Extra tags. I'm not sure what the problem with having extra tag information in the database. A couple extra bytes? We are allowed to create custom tags and use them however we want to describe the data when tags don't already exist. What is wrong with incorporating a few of the original tags from the producers of the data into OSM? Was this overkill? Maybe. Definitely with the description and location tags. But we can send the woodpecker bot in or run some other script in and take out all the tags that aren't needed. No big deal. There are areas that do have overlapping tags like natural=water and landuse=residential due to an error in my scripting conversion, but these can be deleted manually or by script. Empty areas These can easily be filled in or deleted on a case by case basis. Sometimes this is federal land that can be tagged with a landuse tag upon further review. I tried to account for all areas when running the script on the initial data but missed some of the variables. Split lots Split lots are a pain, but these can be joined manually as I have done on several locations. Duplicates Some duplicates were added since there were several different layers used in the Fresno imports, i.e. parks, schools and the county and city zones. That was my fault for not checking, but they can be merged or deleted in JOSM. The county lot includes all the crop types, which makes it possible to break down farms into vineyards or orchards. The city parcel set includes all the extra parcel information for each address. I'm not sure what user:BiIbo did to update the data afterward. But I have done numerous updates myself to delete dups, merge data and align the layers. The Tiger data in the county was real bad, which adds to the problem of things not lining up. While I acknowledge there are several errors in the data, I think it is still possible to clean them up manually or merge parcels into one area for each block, and I am willing to continue working on cleaning up the data if that is the route chosen. When I originally converted the shapefile, it created more than 100 OSM files, which I loaded one by one. It was tedious. That was back in the day when files took forever to load. I wish I knew what I know now about importing. I do agree it is a lot easier to do a little pre-import work first and save a lot of time later on. So bottom line, I am OK if the data has to be reverted. I still think it belongs in OSM but in a more condensed and error-free form. I am willing to help however I can to either clean up the data or to reimport it in a more streamlined fashion. Thanks for hearing me out. Hopefully I didn't put too

For a view of the data, see http://maps.paulnorman.ca/imports/review/fresno.png A few observations: 1. It is castradal data. The consensus is against dumping castradal data into OSM. I am not aware of such a consensus - consensus among who? Is it documented? I would expect such a consensus to appear in the Import Guidelines but it doesn't. Or do you mean there's a consensus against dumping data into OSM in general? If by 'dumping' you mean 'importing without consulting the community and without giving proper thought to attribute mapping and generalization / normalization of geometries' then yes, I'd say there's a consensus against doing that. I don't see why we would not cherry-pick useful and good cadastral data for import into OSM, however. It may be our only source of things like building outlines (are those generally in cadastral data in the US?) or address data in many parts. I don't mean to be nitpicking here, I just want to clarify what this consensus actually is so people looking for guidance on importing in the future can be more fully informed. [...] 8. There are duplicate nodes where data was imported on top of other data. For example, http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/768314177 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/767799968 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/767770150 With all of these problems I cannot think of any ways to fix the problems short of reverting the import. The tagging problems could be fixed by a script but the inherent problems of castradal data cannot be fixed without essentially deleting most of the import anyways. Are these problems inherent of cadastral data in general, of this dataset in particular, or of the way this import was conducted? I propose to delete unmodified objects from this import. I will attempt to preserve areas like schools and fix them if possible. It should be possible to keep most of them but I won't be able to be sure until I get into the removal. The list of issues is long enough and the issues serious enough to warrant a revert. What I'm missing from this list is the issue I consider to be the most serious, which is that this user apparently has not consulted with anyone in the community about this import. Or has he/she? I think the area where there is fairly good consensus is that mass imports of plot boundaries is not welcome in OSM. There was an attempt last year at doing this in Arkansas that ended horribly with a blocked account and a couple hundred thousand empty nodes. There was also the more recent proposed import of Spanish cadastre data. I've made use of local lots information occasionally but there I'm importing a single object at a time, generally for the name of a school. In this case we have another instance of someone not considering the consequences of their import on the OSM community. Even if the data is good and valid (which doesn't seem to be a proven point in this case) if current tools are not able to deal with it, perhaps the import should wait and effort put into improving tools first. There is a lot more awareness of what makes a bad import now than there used to be. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
