Re: [Talk-de] openstreetmap forever, oder was?
Niemand muss da was eintragen. Falk Zscheile-2 wrote Am 19. The issue we have and why would should discuss that with them is, that we have no knowledge how such information can be used by consumers. We have routing engines but these do not use lane, turn-lane and signpost(direction=) informations. So we have no idea if our tagging would work for consumers (open-source or commercial). The idea is to get some help from them. -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/OSMF-Board-auto-industry-What-s-the-story-tp5720039p5720242.html Sent from the General Discussion mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] OSMF Board auto industry / What's the story?
Hi, In the last board minutes [1] there was written Report of meeting with German auto industry in Ingolstadt. Additionally, there was a board member in official mission at the Telematics 2011 [2]. Telematics describes itself as largest focused telematics event in Europe that will bring together global car manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers to discuss future telematics strategy and launch new products into the market. Automotive suppliers have/had OSM related job offerings. One current offering from Audi's SatNav supplier is for a student, topic Converting OSM data and evaluation of a database model [3]. Many board applications at the last election had statements like If I will be elected, I will improve the communication. If board members/the board meet with the same for-profit organisations repeatedly I would think that the community will be informed at least to avoid conspiracy theories. Some questions come into my mind and since I think this is of greater interest, I am asking the questions here 1. How many meetings with the auto industry have been attended by board members in the name of OSM? 2. What was the main subject? 3. Are there any non-disclosure agreements signed or was there any other agreement that prevents the OSMF Board to talk about the content of the meetings? (Learned that from the ESRI case) Thanks a lot in advance. Re: [Talk-de] Copy/Paste remaper?
OK. An die anderen: Was macht man da? Re: [OSM-talk] server migration update / license change
Thanks a lot for the Update, Richard. It is much appreciated that the information flow works. I have a question with regards to the map at osm.org. When the database is clean, it would also need a re-rendering of all tiles in cache to finalise the license change. I know that this takes a lot time, IO, CPU time etc. and can be a questions of days or even a week, depending on the hardware. Is there any expected downtime of the map at osm.org? Or will it be done in the background so that the map on osm.org will remain a while ccbysa after the license of the database changed to ensure that map will always available? -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/server-migration-update-license-change-tp5620977p5621188.html Sent from the General Discussion mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

An overview can be found at http://maps.paulnorman.ca/coastlines2.png Detailed views: Great Lakes: http://maps.paulnorman.ca/coastlines-lakes2.png Europe: http://maps.paulnorman.ca/coastlines-europe2.png US West Coast: http://maps.paulnorman.ca/coastlines-west2.png Australia: http://maps.paulnorman.ca/coastlines-au2.png There are no significant multi-square flooded or dry areas. The following areas have significant number of error points: Pudget Sound in Washington State The mouth of the Columbia river in Washington The Eastern Australia coast The points indicated by the maps and by processedc_p files are where coastcheck encountered an error and had to guess where the coastline continues. These should generally represent transitions between ODbL clean and ODbL dirty sections of the coastline. Islands with no ODbL clean sections will not generate any error points. http://www.wightpaths.co.uk/coast/CT-only.php and http://suncobalt.homeip.net:82/coastline.php are two visualizations of errors but neither has yet updated to the new data. I hope to complete one more run of the ODbL-clean coastlines before the downtime. During the downtime I will be running a set of ODbL-clean and conventional coastlines (and a planet file). If diffs are available during the rebuild process I will be generating them then and reloading my database when the ODbL planet is published. Technical details: This new run takes into account odbl=clean. It may not correctly handle 1. Objects that are dirty via a changeset override 2. Objects that WTFE reported clean but are now dirty 3. Certain sequences of edits and tag additions that are not likely to occur frequently with coastlines and which require access to a full history database to evaluate The data is from 7 AM PST and the ODbL status is slightly more recent. ___ talk mailing list talk@ http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Coastline-Update-tp5608185p5617862.html Sent from the General Discussion mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] Komuna e Malishevs, Serbia ?
The example of Kosovo in the OSM Wiki that you are quoting here has been added your friend Liz, who is in favour of your view. But there exist other views too. As far as on the ground does matter here, the local signs call the border Kosovo Provincial Boundary not country border. The government in Pristina does not have control over all of the territory as you are claiming here. They can enter the north only under protection of KFOR(NATO) and EULEX(EU) Since you are a friend of rules defined by the OSM Wiki. How about this rule For the sake of clarity, only political entities listed on the ISO 3166 standard are to be considered countries. which you can read here http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%3Dadministrative Afaik, Kosovo has no official ISO code, hence is no country by this definition. (XK is an inoffical code used by some organisations). What country prefix I have to dial when I want to call someone in the country Kosovo? I am not claiming that Kosovo is no country but want to point out, that there are reasons for both views Mike Dupont wrote We have rules for osm, they are clear. it is the on the ground rule. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Disputes#On_the_Ground_Rule On the Ground Rule If the dispute can not be resolved through discussion, then the simple default rule is that whatever name, designation, etc are used by the people on the ground at that location are used in the non-localized tags. So in the case of North Cyprus, this would be the Turkish names. The specific rules are documented at WikiProject_Cyprus#Disputed_place_nameslt;http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Cyprus#Disputed_place_namesgt; . In the case where there are multiple local names, then if the government with effective and sustained control of the area has an official source of names or an official stance on a naming dispute, then that name is default. For instance, Derry-Londonderrylt;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derry-Londonderry_name_disputegt; . When there is no clear sustained control of an area, such as Kosovolt;http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Kosovogt;, special consideration will be needed on a case by case basis. (Kosovo now has independent government, recognised by many other countries, so this is now less relevant.) OpenStreetMap is not a forum for politics, but a means for understanding. Disputes are not to be carried out in the map, but in discussion. Any editor who does not abide by this, and does not respect agreements in the area, or ultimately the on the ground rule, risks losing the right to participate in OpenStreetMap. [OSM-legal-talk] Exception in Open Data License/Community Guidelines for temporary file
Dear Legal-list, My question applies to all kind of software that process OSM data but I am using Garmin maps as a popular example. Generating Garmin maps with contours is pretty easy and sometimes completely GUI driven. You select an OSM file, click a button and get a Garmin map. I have distributed such maps sometimes (for free) to some interested people who asked me. In the background it downloads SRTM data from cgiar.org (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research) and seeds that data into the OSM data. I think technically they are added as normal osm-ways with specials tags for the renderer. The cgiar data is non-commercial only (cc-by-sa-nc) licensed. The final Garmin map is rendered from a temporary file that contains both datasets and would constitute a Derivative Database. My point is that a user of software, and this is not limited to Garmin map software, may not know what a software does in the background i.e. if it is creating a (temporary) Derivative Database, a Collective Database or whatever. It is unrealistic that a user of software browses through the directories and check the content of the files there, particularly if the file exist only a short time during the process. So applying the ODbL rules to software generated temporary files would lead me to the conclusion that the solution is don't ask, don't mind. Although I personally could live with that I am not sure if it wouldn't be better to sort it out. The Trivial Transformations Guideline or Community Guidelines could be a good place to make it easier. I am neither a license expert nor a lawyer. From a practical point of view I would wish a clarification like: /Temporary software generated files used for the generation of a Produced Work or a Derivative Database that i) contain data from OSM, ii) may contain data from other (licensed) sources, iii) are only created and used for the purpose of the generation of one Produced Work or one Derivative Database, iv) will not be used for any purpose thereafter, v) will not be distributed or made publicly available do not constitute a derivative database, collective database or produced work/ But I am not sure about any other (unwanted) implication it may have. Re: [OSM-legal-talk] Exception in Open Data License/Community Guidelines for temporary file
David Groom wrote: As far as I can see, ignoring your specific example, and genearlising, the unwanted implication of your clarification above would be that as long as someone deleted the derivate database they had created they could then claim it was temporary and therefore sidestep the requirements of the ODbL to distribute it. To avoid this you would thenhave to start defining temporary etc. Thanks David. Good point. I think the intention is to avoid that someone mix OSM with proprietary data and makes a produced work out of it without sharing the proprietary data. So let me rephrase it and restrict a bit more /Temporary software generated files used for the generation of a Produced Work or a Derivative Database that i) contain data from OSM, ii) may contain data from other sources that are a) free and open licensed /(hope there is a definition for that anywhere)/ and b) publicly available iii) do not contain any proprietary data iii) are only created and used for the purpose of the generation of one Produced Work or one Derivative Database, iv) will not be used for any purpose thereafter, v) will not be distributed or made publicly available do not constitute a derivative database, collective database or produced work / -- View this message in context: http://gis.638310.n2.nabble.com/Exception-in-Open-Data-License-Community-Guidelines-for-temporary-file-tp6504201p6504373.html Sent from the Legal Talk mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-t...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

[OSM-talk] Is it a temporary file or Derivative Database under ODbL
Hi, i have a practical questions. If I want to generate a Garmin map for a larger country and want to add contour lines, it is impossible to merge the data only in the RAM. Re: [OSM-talk] Is it a temporary file or Derivative Database under ODbL
I can not accept this answer, Frederik. Generating a Garmin map with contour lines is not something special. I guess all programs that generate such maps for larger areas need local temp files. And now there is no answer available? What is with all these Garmin Maps? If a local temp file would constitute a database according to ODBL, it would make it very hard to generate it. I don't want to talk with lawyers on legal. I always get headaches when talking with lawyers. And I am part of this community and don't want to talk with legal people when asking such an easy question.
