Re: [OSM-talk] GPS gadgets can get you jailed and fined

2009-09-02 Thread Andy Robinson (blackadder-lists)
I've left my HCX on in flights more than once. I get a very nice trace if
it's facing up and sitting in my hand luggage in the overhead locker. I
really must remember to turn the darn thing off when boarding a flight as I
really don't like the idea of taking it out and doing so during the flight
;-)

I tend to use GPS all the time while I'm in a plane. How should I
geolocate my pictures taken out of the plane w/o
With my neighbours I speak open about the devices (WBT-201 and/or Garmin
etrex), especially with the Garmin you can see where you are.
And also a friend of mine never had problems with the use of GPS loggers
or Garmins in planes.

Best regards,
Michael.

I managed to log a flight from France back to England, using a Garmin Legend
HCX, purely out of interest. Even though it isn't a phone, doesn't look like a
phone and is not capable of transmitting anything, I was careful to be discreet
for the whole flight. Even if it didn't contravene any 'rules'* I was aware
that other people can often draw very strange conclusions if you're doing
something that they don't consider normal.

anyone remove the battery from their digital watch, so I guess this is
something that is enforced, at most, inconsistently.

In Russia they seemingly don't have no problems using GPS in planes... ;-)

Wow, such a crazyness...

I tried to log a flight with my GPS-enabled cellphone (a Nokia N95), but it
didn't worked after a minute.

http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=569496 (forgive
the google maps background, as this GPX is useless for mapping I didn't
uploaded it to OSM)

But sometimes I run into some problems using my smartphone on a plane. It
happened - twice - that the cabin crew didn't allowed me to use the phone,
even after explaining it was on the airplane (offline) mode.

Cheers,

On a plane from Paris to Boston, a guy left a GPS gadget on his seat
armrest when he went to the loo. (We've all done this, haven't we?)
The passengers get scared, they tell the air hostesses, the plane is
diverted, the guy's arrested, he spends days in jail and is fined US
$32,000!
