Thanks for your work.

Could you please post complete numbers ?

Would a JOSM validator warning help ?

2014-06-23 Thread Paul Norman

I completed the edit without issues.

https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/2270 opened for one source.
JOSM had a few too, but those cover more versions so don't show up at
the top.

I manually handled relations which had other relations parents, and in
ever case it was an error of some kind. Most of the parent relations
themselves had no tags and no other members.

1.4k relations like this.

The technical details are at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mechanical_Edits/pnorman#Repeated_empty_relation_cleanup.
I've done a similar mechanical edit in the past.

In case of a conflict (another user editing them at the same time) the
API will reject the changes and I'll just re-generate the list. I
consider this very unlikely, as the only way you can do anything with
the relations is to know the machine-generated ID.

Before actually conducting the edit, I want to see what editors were
used, and submit bug reports if there's any regular problems.

I'm calling this a regular mechanical edit rather than a bot because
it doesn't have the level of automation to be a bot.

Hi,

some years ago I've started this article in the wiki about empty
relations, the reasons and the cleanup:

I've done semiautomatic cleanup in the past, too. But haven't worked on
it during the last year.

Before actually conducting the edit, I want to see what editors were
used, and submit bug reports if there's any regular problems.

Keep in mind. Some empty relations have been created on purpose.

Werner

This seems reasonable to me.

With these kinds of objects, there's really no easy way to understand
the editor's intent, and figuring that out would very likely be more
work that re-doing it.

I think you might be too conservative with the version 1 requirement;
I think that you could probably drop any of these relations even if they
have higher version numbers.

It might be a bit out of scope for this iteration but you might also
want to consider, for a limited set of well-known relation types like
type=multipolygon and type=route, to drop those that don't have members.
It would be wrong to do that *generally* because I believe there is a
niche use case for relations with just tags and no members, but
certainly a multipolygon or route relation with no members makes little
sense.

if the version is 1 it might make sense to see if they had tags and or
members in these older versions

I'm curious, can you get a count of empty relations by editor and age?
Basically, current, and then yearly?

As we talked this weekend, this sounds like a good proposal.

There have been past cleanups, so what you're talking about would need
to involve looking at historical data, which I don't have loaded up, so
won't be doing. Looking at only those in the current data right now
wouldn't be useful.
