It's related to the new "themes" in The Bat!. Using the current version with
the "classic" and certain other themes, I observed the same for those messages.
I've now removed the tick from "include current profile's layout into HTML
messages" in editor preferences, which might make a difference. But the profile
layout was never black on black...

It's me, not you. It has been mentioned in the "How to change the background
color of the Tree with the account folders" thread. It's to do with the
"themes" that have been introduced in recent TB! releases and betas, and still
have some teething troubles. If you are viewing in HTML, it may be odd. In
plain text it will, of course, be fine.

I've tried tweaking my settings slightly; this one may or may not be better.

Add a new copy of the yahoo account in TB!. With luck, it will get you to do the "OAUTH" bit in your web browser when you are adding the account, and subsequently the account will login as normal within TB!. It might not work first time; if so delete the new copy of the account and try again. I had to do this four times for one of my accounts.

If somebody wants a dark background for the folder list because they find a
light background too glaring for their eyes, my guess is the same applies to
the message list. I have used colour groups to give a dark background to these
lists for many years, although I do have specific colour groups that I use just

The user name will be on the "Transport" tab, in the "Receive mail" section.
The second box, which is called "User" will probably contain your gmail

Message finder's count of found messages exceeds the number of results listed if the search scope includes virtual folders that also see the found messages

2020-09-08 Thread MFPA
Hi

When the folders selected for a message search include a virtual folder that
also "sees" some of the found messages, those messages are counted in both the
real folder and the virtual folder. So the count of found messages exceeds the
number of messages available in the results list.

Open message finder.
Enter search terms.
Select folders. Do not include virtual folders.
Hit "Start".
All three message counts in the status bar will match the number of messages
displayed in the results window.
Add a virtual folder that will see some of the already-found messages.
Hit "Start" again.
Two of the three message counts in the status bar will have increased. The
third will match the number of messages displayed in the results window.

If you can confirm this, please consider adding a note to
https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=2076.

Thanks.

I find that in v 9.2.1 my menu customisation is lost each time I

the "Send + Check for All" button to just after "Get New Mail".)

I don't know about a button but the keyboard shortcut CTRL*
expands/collapses all threads when the focus is in the message list.
For a single thread, it's CTRL+ to expand and CTRL- to collapse.

And "menu navigator" doesn't appear if I try from a "separate message
viewer" folder window.

That side of it is moot unless TB! still supports Roguemoticons.

Under X:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images, I still have the "rogues.msl"
file and the "rogues" folder containing the Roguemoticon image files. In
the context menu when right-clicking in the header pane of the message
viewer, I still have the option selected to "Display contact's photo"
(and not the option to "Prefer photo from Address Book". But I don't
see the Roguemoticon picture in the message header when I display an
email that has a valid X-Rogue header. This has been the case for over
three years, since TB! Version 7.4.16 or earlier.

Has the required location for the "rogues.msl" file and the
Roguemoticon image files changed?

Is there another option that I need to set?

Or does TB! simply not support Roguemoticons any more?

Discussion on a TBUDL thread from November 2013 (Subject:

In April 2017 I posted that I no longer see the Roguemoticon images

A secondary point is the server that hosted the Roguemoticon images,

Are Roguemoticons still active?

2020-06-07 Thread MFPA

Hi,

Are Roguemoticons still active?

I still have the rogues.msl file and the Rogues images folder in place
under Program Files\The Bat!\Images. But I don't see the images any
more in the message header when viewing messages, apart from a few
people for whom I have a photo in an address book entry.

I have not received any email notifications that "Someone new has

just tried logging on at http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/ and it told

I just noticed that my account logs are also not showing filter

I have done this in a couple of cases: configure an additional
"account" within The Bat! using the same sending credentials as the
main "account" at that domain. As far as the SMTP server is concerned
it's the same account. No incoming server details needed as this
"account" will not collect mail from the server.

One way is to set up "accounts" in The Bat! for the most-used sending
addresses.

When you redirect a message, the From address is still the original
sender. You may find your outgoing mail server doesn't accept
redirected messages.

If the From address is changed to your address, you are forwarding the
message instead of redirecting it.

I was thinking of the macros you use in message templates, etc.

Try an internet search for: regex "number greater than"

Or if the header field is a spam score, see if the tool can prefix the
subject with a string (or put the string in a custom header) and match
that string in your filter.

I would vote to keep a footer informing of the current version and

linked from that info page has not been updated since I first started
using TB! over 15 years ago.

Would that lead to more help for ordinary users' TB! issues? Or would
their messages simply get lost among all the beta testers' messages?
It would certainly be massively increased traffic compared to the
current TBUDL, and most TBBETA traffic is likely not relevant to the
needs of most current TBUDL users.

Why do they need their own domain? They are perfectly fine where Marck

perfectly fine at one of the mailing list hosts such as groups.io,

Wow! Is it a downloading issue? Maybe the anti-virus detecting an
issue in the .tmp files and denying TB! access to them? (I think TB!
creates a .tmp file for each incoming message and deletes the .tmp
file when the message has been fully received (and similar for
messages imported), but if something interrupts the process the .tmp

I don't recall seeing this on messages in my sent folders, but have
sometimes seen 1 January 1970 and found the message was missing the
Date header. (I thought the server was supposed to add this if it was
missing.)

I've also seen dates early enough to be obviously wrong, and checked

And I've seen anomalous "received" dates on imported messages.

Has support been removed recently? My "Create New Account" wizard in
TB! v8.8.2.5 still has the option of "MAPI(Microsoft Exchange)", the
other two options being "Auto" and "IMAP or POP".

Couldn't you have "best of both" by using IMAP but having TB! copy all
messages to a local archive folder? That way, you could have the local
message store but still access all of your email from multiple devices
using a proper mail client. Or am I missing something?

You could do something with Deletion and Alternative Deletion settings
in Account Properties. Or you could probably do it with a common
filter that's only executed by pressing a hotkey combination.

Avast inserts itself as a proxy or "man in the middle" to be able to
scan the traffic on SSL/TLS/HTTPS connections. That's why the
certificate says "generated by avast! antivirus for SSL/TLS scanning".
That certificate is only used to encrypt the connection from Avast to

AVG and Kapersky do it this way as well

If you are in both groups and haven't fallen out with anybody, easiest
would be to ignore the split and treat it as still one group.

I would think mix-ups are inevitable with or without automatic
filtering. If somebody else in the group mixes up, the message they
send might trigger the wrong filter when it gets to you.

> Is it even possible?

There are several ways this could be achieved. Here's a suggestion,
which I have not tested.

Filter_1
two conditions:-
a - the sender is any address in the wider group
b - the recipient contains all (or any) of the addresses that are
only in SubGroup_1
Action - move all messages to the SubGroup_1 folder.

Filter_2
two conditions:-
a - the sender is any address in the wider group
b - the recipient contains all (or any) of the addresses that are
only in SubGroup_2
Action - move all messages to the SubGroup_2 folder.

I can't answer for Andrew but immediately after selecting several
messages at once and deleting them together, I would expect Ctrl+Z to
restore them all.

Immediately after deleting several messages one at a time, I would
expect Ctrl+Z to restore the last one deleted, then another Ctrl+Z to
restore the previous one deleted, and so on until no further actions
are stored to undo.

Your cut mark in the message to which I am replying worked.

If there is more than one cut mark in a message, only the last one
works. And if a cut mark is quoted from a previous message, the quote
prefix means it is no longer a valid cut mark as the two dashes and
single space are not the only characters on the line.

In the help file's full alphabetic list of macros, "-" is the first on
the list. You use it to create line breaks in the template without
creating the corresponding line breaks in the message (which I do to

My first thought is that I didn't realise "Windows 10" was an actual
version number, rather than a marketing name like Windows
95/98/2000/ME/XP/Vista/7/8. However, when I open a command window the
first line says:-
  Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.885]

This seems to match the string "Windows 10.0 Build 17134" in my
signature, so at least some of the Windows version macros work in TB!
v8.8.2.5 (BETA)(64-bit). My template has %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME %-
%WINDOWSMAJORVERSION.%WINDOWSMINORVERSION Build %- %WINDOWSBUILDNUMBER
%WINDOWSCSDVERSION%-. The last one of those macros seems to return
nothing, where I would have expected 885.

I also notice %THEBATVERSION macro fails to return the "(64-bit)"
suffix. I just reported this at

They are standards for signing and encrypting.

In both cases you generate a key or certificate. Sometimes called a
key pair because it actually consists of a public part you share and a
private part you keep safe.

S/MIME uses Certificate Authorities (CA). You send them your
certificate to sign as certificates that are only self-signed are not
generally trusted. The CA may charge for the service and may carry out
identity checks. It is likely a CA that doesn't charge will just check
you can receive email at the address stated on the certificate.

OpenPGP uses a "web of trust" where users can sign each other's keys.

> Currently the bar reads "S/MIME + OpenPGP (auto)"

That means that S/MIME and OpenPGP are both enabled and that PGP/MIME
is set to "Auto". You can change these settings from the context menu
that appears if you click that part of the status bar or select
Privacy from the menu at the top.

> What is happening automatically?

If you are not actually signing or encrypting with an OpenPGP
implementation, nothing.

I think setting PGP/MIME to "Auto" allows TB! to automatically choose
which method of OpenPGP to use, inline or PGP/MIME. This relates to
how the signed or message is structured within the message source, and
to whether the PGP begin/end lines and signature are concealed or
visible in the message text. I don't recall seeing a description of
how TB! makes this decision.

> There are also a picture of a locak and a green "Sign when

You can select "Sign when Completed" or "Encrypt when completed".

If you have a private key (also called a certificate) linked to your
email address, you can sign outgoing messages. If you have a public
key (certificate) linked to the recipient's email address, you can
encrypt the message you are sending.

Did you try, under Privacy and Security, The section called OpenPGP or
the section called S/MIME? They are not the clearest but are worth a
read. And maybe do a little research on the internet. Then come back
with more specific questions.

No wonder I can't see any difference. I only have three virtual
folders and their parent is "< Root Folder >", so there is no "upper
level".

Virtual folder properties - Count in upper level

For virtual folders, in the properties dialog the Filter tab has a
checkbox called "Count in upper level". What does this do? I can't see

This problem was introduced in TB! v8.2 in January 2018 [0].

we have improved The Bat! to made the following checks in the
display name part of an address: if it contains an "@" character
or any control character (such as "carriage return", "line feed"
or "null" characters), then such a name part is discarded, and
the user sees real email address rather than a fake one put to
 the sender’s name part.

Yahoogroups messages provide the From header in the format "Name email
address [group name]" Is there a way to change something in
> the settings
> to get that name shown again in the message list?

Unfortunately not. It's an annoying nannying feature with no way to
deactivate it. You could always persuade the groups to move from yahoo
to a group provider that has a more sane way of providing the From
header.

As well as yahoogroups, it affects mail forwarded from
Spamgourmet addresses, where the From header should be
"sender name - sender email address" .

I reported it on Ritlabs Issue Tracker [1] in February 2018. Aswell as
not fixing it, so far the developers have failed to acknowledge it.

TB! fails to decrypt some of the encrypted messages I receive, giving

The standard way of threading is by the References header.

TB! has nine threading options, seven of which ignore the Subject
header.

I'm not sure you can edit the Subject within TB! for an incoming or
received message. [0] shows an example of two filters and a batch
command to export the message, edit in a text editor, and import the
message back to TB!. Note it is called "Editing received messages
without changing the headers" so you might need to adapt it to be able
to edit the Subject header.

If you want to automatically clean the subject line when you reply to
their messages, you could probably adapt the example at [1] for your needs.

Roguemoticons

2019-03-03 Thread MFPA
Hi all,

Do Roguemoticons no longer work, is it just me, or is there an option
I may have inadvertently turned off?

I have the X-Rogue header in my outgoing emails but no longer see my
Roguemoticon image in the header pane when viewing my messages. I have
the rogues.msl file present in my Program Files\The Bat!\Images
directory, and also the rogues folder containing the images.

I asked a similar question nearly two years ago [0] and didn't see a
response. A search for the X-Rogue header on my mailbase shows that
since my April 2017 query, as well as my messages it has also still
been included in messages from Greg Strong, Marck Pearlstone, Mark
Partous, MAU, Peter Hampf, Robin Anson, Volker Ahrendt, and Thomas
Fernandez. In the previous two years the list also included Stuart
Cuddy, Rick , Peter Meyns, Jack S. LaRosa, and
Feli Wilcke. If any of you are reading this, do you still see
Roguemoticon images in the header pane?

At Account | Properties | Transport, in the "Receive Mail" part of the

I'm convinced when I had an account that appeared twice, the solution
I used was to add a new account with a similar name, then close down
TB!, then (in Windows Explorer) copy all files from the old account's
folder to the new account's folder, then start TB!, delete the old
account from the account list, and rename the new one to have the same
name.

> But why do the duplicates happen in the first place?

I don't know. It only happened once for me so far with an account.
I also had it with address books just after moving to a new computer.

I think you can add scheduled checking for new mail in the Scheduler
tool, with check-boxes to select the accounts. But that would be
independent of the settings in each account's properties.

You can delete the accounts you don't want shown. TB! gives you the
choice to leave the account files on disk, so that you could later
re-add the account and still have the old messages and folders.

It's still a shame the bug <https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=1435>
has not been corrected yet. Despite Marck's claim in
<https://www.mail-archive.com/tbbeta@thebat.dutaint.com/msg110620.html>
that "TB is just showing you what is there. No more, no less." my TB!
displays all senders in the message list for a Yahoo group as just the
group's email address, but only for messages downloaded since I
upgraded to TB! 8.2. Granted that when you actually view the
"sendername senderemail [listname]" .
Searching on SENDER contains SENDERNAME only brings up results that
were downloaded pre-8.2.

That is a pity as it gives false information. The messages are sent
_to_ the list, they do not originate _from_ the list.

Will it make this list suffer from the bug that was introduced in TB! 8.2,
which I reported at <https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=1435>? Not
being able to see from the message list display who posted which

Assuming you are using POP to download your messages from your Gmail
account, within The Bat! go to Account Options | Transport tab |
Receive Mail section and add "recent:" (without quotes, and with no
space after the colon) to the front of your user name. Gmail should
then not download messages more than 30 days old. (Make sure to add it
only for the POP settings, not the SMTP.)

For more info, try googling something like "gmail recent mode".

Is the option "continue processing with other filters" selected in
your filter that moves the messages to Account B?

Also, why the two-step process? You could do away with the first
filter and move messages straight from Account A Inbox to the required
folder in Account B.

I did away with per-account filters long ago and switched to Common
filters instead, which I find far easier. I would suggest giving them

I had that with an account a few years ago. I deleted the account from

created a "new" account with the same name and pointed it to the

I do not know where The Bat! stores them by default. But there are
ways around this.

The folder level does not have to be within an account: you can have
Folder Templates in Common Folders, too.

Maybe somebody knows a quick way to find them. I don't but I made it
easier for myself. I learned most of this from this list but
unfortunately cannot remember who to credit.

As you need to update it anyway, I suggest you look at building it up
from Quick Templates. That way, next time you just change the info in
the QT and the change carries through to all your varying versions of
the new message template.

Another suggestion is to use the %include macro in the message
templates to point to a text file. For example, one of my new message
templates just says:-

%INCLUDE="%maildir%\templates\new_msg_template_general.txt"%-

The actual template is in the text file it points to, and I keep all
of them in the same folder. In that case, the text file says:-

%SetEditor="1"%-
%QT="Std_Header"%-
%-
Hi %UCFIRST="%TOFName"

%Cursor
%-
%QT="Std_Signature"%-
%-
%nopgpmime%-

(My Quick Templates are also just a %include macro, but they point to
text files in a quick_templates subdirectory of the templates folder.)

TB! 8.2 Incorrect display of "From" column in message list for Yahoo Group messages and Spamgourmet Messages

2018-02-26 Thread MFPA
Hi

Yahoo Group messages provide the From header in the format "Name email
address [group name]" .

In the "From" column of the message list, TB! used to show Name email
address [group name]. Since updating to TB! v8.2 it has now switched
to displaying group email address instead. So all messages appear to
come from the group email address without a member's name. You cannot
determine which member posted a message until you click on that
message and can see the headers. It also makes it harder to locate a
particular message as you can no longer sort by the "From" column.

Messages forwarded from Spamgourmet addresses to your real email
address also suffer from this change. They no longer display as
"sender name - sender email address" ; now the "From" column just shows the
obscured email address to reply from the Spamgourmet address.

It appears to be deliberate behaviour [0] but has seriously eroded the
user experience.

Do the folders that are a different font or weight contain unread
messages, or anything else that the generic colour group's settings
would cause to display differently?

Failing that, it might be worth a try to change the ones that display
differently to another colour group, then close and re-open The Bat!,
and then change them back to the generic colour group.

You probably have a Colour Group applied to these folder names.
Change it at Folder | Colour Group.

Why not copy all entries from each address book directly to a new one
within TB! and delete the duplicates there? (If you use address book
groups that have "hide items if not specifically selected" checked in
their options, you would need to either copy members of these groups
separately or remove this checkmark before selecting all entries in
the address book to copy.)

> What am I missing?

Is there any possibility that you didn't delete the whole line when
deleting the duplicate entries? A long shot, but all I could think of.

Just a suggestion. I do not have Outlook installed.

Try Windows start button | type "default " (no quotes) into the search

www.charter.con diverts to www.spectrum.com and you get the 404 error
because they have no page with the address
www.spectrum.com/postmaster. If you are contacting them, I'd suggest
pointing it out to give them the opportunity to fix the redirect
and/or the email error message.

By complete fluke, I found
https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/charter-postmaster-services/

That page has a section tilted "Email Security Alerts" which says:-

Spectrum customers with compromised or infected computers who are
broadcasting outbound spam or virus-infected email won't be able
to send email messages and will receive an error 554 Email
 Security Alert.

 To resolve this issue:

Send us the original blocked email in one of two ways:
Open the original message in your sent folder, update the
address to unbl...@charter.net and send it.
Create a new message addressed to unbl...@charter.net, copy
and paste the original message, and then resend.
Resend the email to the original recipient 48 hours later as a
test.
If you're still having problems, contact us
https://www.spectrum.net/page/contact-us/.

Take a look at <https://www.ritlabs.com/en/support/help/70/#6640>.
Only part of the page is relevant, then it moves on to address book
synchronisation.

And while I was googling for that, I found
<https://www.ritlabs.com/en/forums/forum4/topic6643/message25311/#message25311>
where Roelof Otten says:-

You can play with the auto-fill options (per address field) at:
  Options -> Preferences -> Viewer/Editor -> Message Header -> To:
  -> Edit -> 'Editing' tab
The autofill options can be configured per header, so instead of
'To:' you can aso select CC: or BCC:
