Re: KeySoft

2013-11-11 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Mary

Is the US moving over to UEB? It is my understanding that UEB includes
mathematical Braille as well as other standards such as poetry and music. If
the US is adopting that standard there shouldn’t be an issue. MathType does
seem to support UEB.

Kind regards

Hi, Gordon

From what I understand, UK math Braille is different from Nemeth code, which
is the ystem of math Braille the uS has adopted. But yes, it's a system of
math braille.

Re: DAISY Players; [Was Next Generation Braille Notetaker Just Released]

2013-11-11 Thread Gordon Smith
I don’t get this. Who is shunning you? Just because others have different
priorities that does not mean that they’re shunning you, as you put it. Seems
to me that there’s a touch of paranoia creeping in here. :)

|As for development, that’s good. But just because others opt to go other
routes means nothing.

In terms of the Pi®, I have read stuff about it here and there and, come a time
when I’m not so busy with other little things like work, broadcasting, and
various other things, I may well look seriously at the project. But right now
I don’t really think there would be much advantage to me personally from
becoming involved. I don’t need a DAISY player, I have them on a number of
platforms. In fact, one can even publish DAISY now from within Windows without
having to chew on with OpenOffice and assorted plug-ins. The DAISY Consortium
has now released their own publisher which works very well actually. Dolphin
Computer Access used to be the only realistic publishing solution on Windows
until OBI came along.

But I’m getting off the point. The point here is that yes, the project has
interest. But I’m puzzled by your outlook on this to be honest.

After all, we were promised by a number of people that when we got our
broadcasting project off the ground they would join us. But that has not
happened. Are they shunning us? Of course not. They just have their own
priorities and interests. That’s fair enough. At this time I have no
intention of becoming involved with RP. Why? It’s very simple really.

Kind regards

Hi Gordon,

The US has made a decision to move over to UEB but it is probably going
to take a couple of years to undertake all the necessary work.

Changing gmail settings using VoiceOver on Mavericks

2013-11-11 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Safari under VoiceOver on the latest version of Mac OS 10.9.

Last time I needed to change my gmail settings (a couple of months ago) I went
to mail.google.com/mail/h which gave me the basic html interface to gmail from
where I could access my gmail settings and change them.

Now google seems to have changed their user interface. If I now go to
mail.google.com/mail/h I get my mail inbox and the list of my other mail
folders. I cannot find any way to modify my gmail settings. I can get into and
modify the details of my google account but not my gmail settings.
I would appreciate any tips.
Many thanks.

Hi Gordon,

An addendum: Please see
http://www.brailleauthority.org/ueb/BANA-UEB-Nemeth-Report.doc which is a Word
file explaining how why Nemeth Code was still chosen and how UEB and Nemeth can
exist in the same document. There are .brf and .pdf files available at

Hi Gordon,

The USD adopted the UEB last November, but they are keeping Nemeth Code
because, they say, it expresses Math better. So I think the differences in math
will still be an issue.

Re: DAISY Players; [Was Next Generation Braille Notetaker Just Released]

2013-11-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay, well its not a personal observation actually and it really doesn't have
much to do with the list to be honest so perhaps I can try and make things a
little clearer.

I'm not being personally shunned, what I have found is a... well.. very odd
type of attitude.

I've explained the concept of the Pi Player and explained that the system is
in multiple parts, for example you have the Raspberry Pi computer at the
player's center and other parts plugging into this - the speaker, the dongle
for the remote control, the memory stick for the content etc -.

I appreciate the discussion particularly on this list surrounding the Pi
Player and similar subjects however its a shame that other people have
suggested that the whole idea is utterly useless and worthless because of the
nature of the Pi Player's design of having multiple components so perhaps
Shunned was a too stronger term to be used here.

Now I admit, we'd really love to build everything into a case like a Plextalk,
a Victor Reader stream etc and we are looking at options to do this now that 3D
printing is becoming move viable however if we start building custom boxes and
making custom designs then the whole cost of the thing sky rockets dramatically
when the central point of this project is to provide a low cost Daisy solution
to those who want it, people have the choice of putting it together themselves
or - if need be - we can send out all the parts required so all the user need
do is plug everything in and switch on.

There's no way that the Pi Player will ever take the place of the
commercially available products but remember that most of those products are at
least 3 times the price of one of our Daisy Pi configurations which can be
built from off-the-shelf hardware and most of us have a budget we have to live
by.
