ARIA For Dane, especially, but for others who might be interested
Hi, So yesterday I asked about how screen readers are doing with ARIA. It stands for Accessible Rich Internet Application. If you've seen web sites with landmarks such as navigation, banner, etc., or menus where links used to be such as on the Freedom Scientific web site, that's ARIA. It can also be used to make tables disappear on pages where there is, for example, a survey with 40 tables containing radio buttons for you to select. So that is what ARIA is, and a lot more web developers are using it. Hi Lynne, I really like Logitech. I've used the Logitech Clearchat headphones, and now I have a Logitech USB headset. I have to say that it sounds really good. Mary Quoting Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith ly...@mac-access.net: Hello everybody I wondered whether anybody had played around with the Logitech headset range. I just bought Gordon a Logitech H800 Bluetooth headset. he hasn't got to play with it yet as we don't know how long it has to be on charge for. But given that it's only an 800MA battery, Gordon says it shouldn't need to be too long. The technical specs look good, and the fact that a lot of the more perishable parts can be replaced, (ear pads and battery) speaks volumes for it. So, I'll set him loose with it shortly and we will go from there. Yeah, I think it's fine to leave it here. Radio broadcasting and the technology tools used for it could very well be one of the topics covered on this list. Re: Sparkle Radio
Yay! I have some different to listen to at work. (This brings back some memories!) smile I'll contact you privately with results of stuff, as I am using several media players and screen reader versions. I am s excited!! Mary Quoting Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net: Hi all OK, a very basic first version of the Sparkle Radio website is now available. There are also listen links, and one of the request options is also now functional. We would be extremely interested to know how people using different accessibility technology tools find that feature actually, as it uses iFraming technologies which, in the past, have been problematic to assistive accessibility tools such as screen-readers. It has not been possible, as yet at least, to test in all of those environments, so comment is very welcome. But please try to keep hostility to a minimum even if you happen to find, or believe, the request module to be inaccessible. Remember we're only just launching this project and it will get a lot better as time goes on. For the moment, if you find any broken links or other problems, please help us out by reporting them. Re: Microsoft Office 2010 Query
Hi Gordon, JAWS does announce the different bullet types that Word uses. Unfortunately, I cannot find a shortcut key to easily get to the bullets button. There is none announced by JAWS anyway. The option is in the Home ribbon. You can choose from filled round, hollow round, cross, diamond, filled square, and none (I might be missing one). Whe reading the bullets in a document, JAWS announces most of the bullets correctly except for the hollow round bullet. That is read as an o. Mary Quoting Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net: Hi Mary I think you're notified instantly under Window-Eyes when something becomes a heading. But I will test that and let you know. This is, however, good news. I now have sufficient information to make the document on which I am working more presentable. Incidentally, do the Bullet characters, ( ? ) get verbalised under either Jaws or Window-Eyes, and for that matter do they appear as bullet characters under Windows and, therefore, in your Windows documents at all? If not, how does one go about creating bulleted lists under Microsoft Word 2010? Re: Office 2010, a culture shock! Plus, Jaws and dreadful voices
Hi Gordon, Right, now just to be clear. Buy Paragraphs, I'm assuming you mean the standard 1 blank line between blocks of text in Word. is that what DBT will interpret as a Paragraph style? DBT's standards may be different if you choose to import the Word file as English braille with or without capitals, because your rules may be different than mine. According to the BANA standards there's no blank line. Instead, the paragraphs are indented two spaces. I don't know what the BAUK's standards say. Thank you. I pressed Alt+H but didn't notice anything else pop up. I guess this is one of these occasions where my Apple experience comes into conflict with the Windows one because I always associate the Alt key as being the same as the Command key on an Apple keyboard like the one I am using at present. I keep forgetting that, under Windows, the general standard is F1 for help. JAWS should say, 'home tab. I do wonder if your version was impaired. If the verbosity settings wouldn't hange, and if you weren't getting good menu prompts, it does make me wonder. Now, just one other thing I've noticed. I still don't appear to be able to control the mouse pointer with Jaws. Everything is great with those applications which only require keyboard access. But Jaws does not appear to work well out of the box with, for instance, OTS AV DJ. Ots AV DJ is a broadcasting application which I used to use under Windows and which I hope to be using again very shortly. I'm getting back into radio again and I think we'll be using OTS AV DJ. So I need to start working on that again as well. I seem to remember that there were some scripts developed for OTS AV DJ by Jim Snowbadger. But I object in principle to paying for scripts either for Jaws or for Window-Eyes. Yes, I know that development takes time and effort. I fully accept that developers have to eat as well. But this isn't quite the same, we're only talking about a script, not a full software application. I've never heard of it, of course. I do wish you lick with it all. Re: Office 2010, a culture shock! Plus, Jaws and dreadful voices
Hi Gordon Quoting Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net: OK, are you saying just open the word file in DBT as in from Windows Explorer? I seem to remember there used to be something under the file menu if the templates were installed in order to have the file you were working on in Word sent to DBT. I am basically trying to add paragraphs and other styles to this file which was originally just a plain text file. But I cannot find out h=how on earth you're supposed to do things like centre text, put text into a heading, etc., in Word 2010. These ribbons really are a pain in the neck, I really do not like them. Yes, you can open them in DBT, and if there are paragraphs, etc. present, DBT will add the styles automatically. If you are creating headings in a Word document, do the following: 1. Select the line or lines of text for which there should be a heading. 2. Press alt+h, and then tab twice. Select the level heading you want by tabbing to it and pressing enter. To center text n Word: 1. Select the text you want centered. 2. Press Ctrl+e. Tip: If you are tabbing through the ribbons, listen to the accesskeys that JAWS announces. This will help you not have to navigate ribbons so much. On a different subject, I simply can't get Outlook 2010 to play nice at all. I cannot get around these ribbons there either to be honest. I think Microsoft has really made their product worse by the implementation of this new layout. It took me a while to get used to the ribbons, but I like them allright now. You might try JAWS Virtual ribbons mode. See if that decreases your woes. Re: Office 2010, a culture shock! Plus, Jaws and dreadful voices
Hi Gordon, You have to open Word files in DBT in order for them to translate. Doing it in Word won't really help. The ribbons can be cumbersome to navigate. I have found the virtual ribbons thing to be even more cumbersome, but some people like them. I do not get alt-tab. What do you have your verbosity set at? Mary Quoting Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net: Hi Mary Yes, and yes. I installed Office 2010 Professional and activated it. Then, I installed Duxbury DBT and made sure that all of the Word templates were instilled. However, I am seeing nothing about DBT in the menus of Word. But EI'm having some trouble with the ribbon menu systems, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Furthermore, although I have set Jaws key echo to words only, I'm still getting things like 'Alt+Tab, Windows+M etc. verbalised and it's driving me insane! Anyone have experience with the Index Braille Box V4 Embosser?
The following email is actually from my boss, but I thought I would post it here, too, seeing as how I may have to learn about this Index embosser someday soon. If anyone has any experience, I'll pass it on with thanks to my boss. Mary Hello, Does anyone have experience with the Braille Box V4 Embosser by Index Braille, or an earlier model of the Braille Box embosser? We have quite a bit of experience using the Juliet Pro 60 braille embosser and using tractor feed paper. We need to setup another embosser at a different location, and are faced with having to purchase/build a special sound enclosure to keep the noise level civil to those around it. We are curious about the Braille Box V4 embosser because it claims to be quiet which may offset the unit's higher cost by keeping our sound enclosure needs lower. Also the single sheet paper feeder is interesting. However, we've been told Index Braille embossers are known for having frequent paper jams. I guess I'm wondering if anyone really knows whether paper jams are really/still a problem with Index Braille embossers and particularly with this unit. Also, does anyone know what it is like to live around a Braille Box embosser (in terms of noise level)? Thanks for any feedback! Re: firefox being strange with jaws 13?
Yeah, I have noticed it acting up and not focusing. When I open a web page, I often have to tab quite a few times before JAWS will announce anything. According to the latest WebAIM survey, most screen reader users still use IE, about 60%. As long as that keeps up, companies like FS probably won't do their best to fix these sort of issues. If you are using IE or Firefox with JAWS, don't forget about the notification bar, which can be accessed with alt-n. You can then save the file in the download folder alloted to you in IE or browse to where you want the driver saved. Quoting Øyvind Lode - Forums for...@lode.is: Usually one installs the driver after plugging in the device by locating it in the device manager and right click and hit enter on install or update driver. However, when I read the instructions for installing the usb driver for the new generation Brailliant BI 40 they stated that the drivers should be installed before you plugged the display to the computer. If the previous generation also use the same approach just download the Driver Tool which is an exe file and run it. A window will appear were one can choose to install usb driver and the tool will copy the files to the correct locations. Re: Talking white cane
Hello, I really don't have anything to add to Martin's message. I will say I tried out the ... I think it's called the ultracane? It has electronic censors in it, and when there are objects overhead or in front of you, it vibrates different parts of the cane to indicate in which direction there are obstacles. I think I might have liked it if I could get used to the directions and equate them with how I was walking. But I don't know how you would hear anything in traffic like Martin said. Even when I have tried GPS devices, I have found them slightly distracting because I am listening for traffic and the like. Mary Quoting Martin McCormick mar...@x.it.okstate.edu: Those are good questions. I have been using the standard white cane since around 1967 and there really are some ways that electronics could enhance it but I haven't heard of anything yet that sounds like what we call a killer application. Here's the problem. The cane is an extension of our hand and transmits a lot of information mechanically back to us about what is just ahead and to the sides as you swing it back and forth. Our ears really need to be fully tuned in to the surroundings such as traffic or work going on so that channel is pretty much occupied all the time and doesn't need any more inputs competing with a busy world. When there is nobody around on a peaceful day, you could stand to hear all sorts of prompts and tones from your cane that could tell you about overhead branches and things off to the sides, but the world can get very noisy and confusing very quickly. I am talking about hardly being able to hear yourself think due to construction or heavy vehicles or even high wind. At that point, you suddenly loose that channel because it is effectively jammed completely by racket. About the only thing that still works is your sense of touch so devices that transmit vibrations to your hands or even other parts of your body such as the neck or back or even the stomach could be used but anything that talks is going to have to be either right in your ear or able to be hugely loud to do any good. === The Techno-Chat E-Mail forum is guaranteed malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and worm-free To modify your subscription options, please visit for forum's dedicated web pages located at http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/techno-chat You can find an archive of all messages posted to the Techno-Chat group at either of the following websites: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/techno-chat/index.html Or: http://www.mail-archive.com/techno-chat@techno-chat.net you may also subscribe to this list via RSS. Re: Jaws For Windows
Hi Gordon Glad to see you posting again. You asked: 1. What's the latest version of Microsoft Office and where do we stand, please, in terms of accessibility with the aforementioned screen-readers, plus GW Micro's Window-Eyes? I haven't tested Mocrosoft Office anything with WE, but can say that I've used Outlook 2010, word 2010 and have read one PowerPoint so far using JAWS 13. I have not yet tried out the OCR feature. I guess I haven't needed it. I have not run into any problems. I have noticed that jAWS crashes IE9 a lot when on web sites using ARIA markup. WE seems to not support ARIA markup very well still at all. 2. Does Freedom Scientific sell online to overseas customers, or is it one of those dealership rackets still, as it was when I got my fingers severely burned with them in 2000 when they re-sold my serial number to another customer and also my SMA, and they flatly refused to honour it with a different S/N and SMA. Yes, it's still a delership racket, I am sorry to say. 3. On the assumption that Freedom Scientific does indeed sell internationally online, do they operate any kind of monthly Lease To Own programme, similar to that which GW Micro offers? Currently my outright budget wouldn't stretch to the £1200 USD which Freedom seem to be asking for JFW Professional and that doesn't even cover remote access; shocking. Unfortunately, FS says get a loan if you need to. Blah! Having spent most of the morning playing around with various aspects of Windows 7 Ultimate Sp1 and Window-Eyes, I'm sorry to have to say that I'm distinctly unimpressed with GW's latest offering. Having become somewhat accustomed to the lack of a Browse Mode, I find it irksome to say the least when I have to keep continually pressing enter on edit boxes etc. before I can insert or modify data, and then having to re-enable browse mode to find out what a consecutive edit box's data should be. Pressing tab when outside of browse mode now yields only Edit, and not the content descriptor field any longer. Well, JAWS has had auto forms mode for quite a while now. Whenever it encounters a form element, if auto forms mode is turned on (which it is by default) you won't have to keep reactivating it. I hope you can find that helpful. Information about the National Federation for the Blind's Web Accessibility Day
Hello, all On September 19, the NFB hosted a Web Accessibility day. If you go to http://www.nfb.org/nfb/web_accessibility_day.asp and click on the Materials for web accessibility day link, you can download the Resource CD. I have summarized most of the contents in the Resource CD .zip folder below. One of the items in the Best Practices folder is a case study regarding the design of the recovery.gov web site. The document includes how testing was done to make sure the web site complies with Section 508 guidelines, as well as other best practices such as making sure all links are contextual (for example, no read more... links.) These procedures include testing with people with disabilities, and training content providers on how to provide accessible PDF and content. There are also code examples given. The PowerPoint presentation in the Best Practices folder talks about how many universities and Federal organizations have web sites that dont comply with Section 508 guidelines, or reveal how their web sites will be compliant in the future. Following that are some examples of federal agencies and universities that have policies in place and perform automated checks to ensure compliance. Oregon State University tries to ensure that their web sites meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA guidelines, and the rest are all Section 508 University of Wisconsin, University of California, and a couple others. In the Business Case for Web Accessibility folder, theres an HTML document from the WAI that talks about why the web should be accessible, example of common accessibility failures, and gives resources for designing ccessible web sites. Then there are several documents discussing building business cases from different perspectives in this folder. Then theres an HTML document that talks about how to report inaccessible web sites. Another document talks about how to involve older people and people with disabilities in the testing of the web site, along with the benefits of involving these groups of people. There is also a Word document of a presentation by a person from EBay that talks about designing an accessible web site from an industry perspective, and a PowerPoint presentation from a representative from Blackboard that talks about making the case for web accessibility for your business. In the javascript folder is an HTML document that talks about how to make Javascript accessible, myths and misconceptions about Javascript, and how to resolve problems like losing focus and other things. There is also a UI folder, and it has a lot of stuff in it. In the jQuery folder is a PowerPoint presentation, which doesnt make much since when reading it with JAWS after saving it as .rtf. I see the word results several times in a row. There are also someaudio examples in the folder: one person increasing both a min and max price using JAWS with Windows 7, one with Safari and VoiceOver, and one with NVDA. These audio blips are only about 20 seconds long and dont really go into any detail. Finally, theres the Adobe Life Cycle folder which contains a .pdf presentation. I cant read it because I havent updated my Acrobat Reader yet. I'll get around to it someday. Re: Ready to Play the Space Junk Lottery?
Hi Martin I have a question based on what you wrote, and I only quoted the relevant part of your message below: I wonder if the tundra in Northern Canada would really be safe after such an event? I am skeptical. And how do people go around cleaning stuff up like that? Martin wrote: While this satellite only presented a danger if one happened to be unlucky enough to have been standing under pieces of falling junk, I am reminded of the Russian spy satellite that did fall in to Northern Canada many years ago. That satellite had what is called a nuclear thermopile as its power supply. This is a container of a radio-active element such as strontium which keeps itself red hot for years by all the atomic decay going on. It's like a tiny atomic reactor and the generator is a series of thermocouples similar to ones you might have in your water heater or gas stove to signal that the pilot light has not gone out. Each thermocouple generates some voltage when heated so a whole pile of them, so to speak, makes enough current to run the systems on the satellite. These power plants are fine and dandy as long as they do not fall back to Earth and break open, spewing their contents everywhere. The Russian satellite crashed in the tundra of Northern Canada and splattered radio-active pieces everywhere. Specially trained emergency workers flew a plane with a detector on board and crisscrossed the area until they were able to alert the ground crew where all the hot spots were so they could remove them and make the area safe again. Re: Reasonably priced digital recorders?
Is it easy to tell which Olympus model talks? Thanks, Dane Mary Quoting Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net: Howdy! I wonder whether just a cassette recorder may do the job? You can still buy the typical desktop machine with the classic piano key type arrangement for well under $200.00 here, I just checked with one of the stores where I buy radio gear from. I'm not sure I'd recommend the Zoom H1 that many list members use, whilst I'd term the device as veyr easy to use some of the buttons are very small and unless you're really concentrating then they can be easily knocked thus changing the mode of the recorder. One of the cheaper Olympus models that talks? Well that may be an option worth looking at too! Re: FScast 58 concerning JAWS 13
I should have read your message before replying, since I said about the same thing. smile I am glad they came out with it personally. Mary Quoting David Griffith d.griff...@btinternet.com: The list bounced back my earlier effort at replying so I will try again. Are you talking about products for the Mac platform? If so I would be very interested to know what these are. The main solution I know about is the Web Visum plugin for Windows Firefox [ not sure about the spelling[ but the problem here is that as I understand it the latest versions of Firefox no longer support these plugins. You have to be careful not to upgrade if you want to retain access to this utility. In tho case getting this feature in Jaws would be useful providing it will still work in the demo version which yo can presumably download to when when you need it. I also do not use Firefox as my main browser on the Windows side but stick with IE for the time being. I seem to have problems with Firefox crashing no mater what platform I am on for some reason. Re: Student studying Arabic
You're right, Gordon. The first flag on the RealSpeak Solo Direct page for Freedom is an Australian flag. lol At least these supported so-called languages are free. Mary Quoting Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net: Hi Mary Sorry, but that's just pathetic. Counting British English as a separate language I mean. Honestly, I've never heard of anything so darn stupid in all my life! It's a bit like saying Australian English, New Zealand English, and Caribbean English are different languages. I bet they do say that actually, they're just stupid enough. Re: I am curious; What's a Jambox?
I have to say, I am familiar with Martin's definition. I remember my first jambox I got was when I was 9 years old. I think my dad paid $8 for it. It couldn't even really stand up if you put it on the ground. But I loved that radio. One of my fondest memories is taking it out in the back yard, leaning it against a tree, and listening to Live Aid. lol Mary Quoting Martin McCormick mar...@x.it.okstate.edu: It sounds like the term has evolved. Many years ago, a jam box was another word for those portable tape player-radio combinations one used to see and sometimes hear whether you wanted to or not on city streets and school grounds. They were also called boom boxes because the better ones had pretty good base. The not so better ones just sounded loud and distorted. They ran on 6 to 8 D-cell batteries so if a tornado came by, you could hang on to your boom box and stay on the ground. Re: Review: WD My Passport Essential portable hard drive
Hello, I bought a WD Drive last year, and it does have a hidden partition. In addition, it says you have to install this organizing software in order to use it. I found the software to be inaccessible, and I also found you did not have to install it to use the drive. Other than that, though, I've had no problems with the drive. I got it to store books and music. It's a desktop version, but still small enough to move if I need to. Quoting Gordon Smith gor...@mac-access.net: Hi Sarah I have moved this from Mac Access because it isn't Apple specific so it doesn't belong on that list really. The newer drives have that hidden partition on them, whereas the old ones did not. They just allowed you to delete the software if you didn't want it. I've been using WD drives for about 15 years up until a couple of years ago. In the good old days, they were excellent. But the new ones are a disaster. Lynne and I have had 3 of them die in the last 12 months alone. Not portable ones I grant you that. I do actually have one of those Passport drives here but only because somebody bought me it as a present last Christmas. The MyBook drives are a pile of junk in my opinion. They're not reliable and they are actually very slow. We also have one of the MyBook Studio Edition drives here which is a 2TB drive that has 1394B, USB2 and SATA interfaces. To be fair, that drive has given us reasonably good performance and the only reason it's kind of held together by tape and blew is that it was dropped on one occasion as we were carrying it from point A to point B. But I will say this about the large models, the power supplies are absolutely dreadful. They die more frequently than the drives. ___ The Techno-Chat E-Mail forum is guaranteed malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and worm-free To modify your subscription options, please visit for forum's dedicated web pages located at http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/techno-chat You can find an archive of all messages posted to the Techno-Chat group since the 12th of April 2010, at: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/techno-chat/index.html

Peacemaker Sound Enclosure
Hi guys, So our university is looking into replacing the sound booth (which is old, ugly, losing its insulation and therefore not as effective) with a Peacemaker sound Enclosure from Enabling Technologies. The video that ET has on their site is inconclusive. Have any of you had any experience with this sound enclosure? We would like to be able to emboss stuff during the day when students are around, so your honesty would be appreciated. I've looked for blog entries on it, but I've found nothing. Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
