Actually, at this stage of my learning processes, it would be wrong to call my
article a “Review”. These were just a few ramblings and off-the-cuff
observations.

I did neglect to explain what CW and CW Reverse modes do. So that oversight, I
shall correct now.

CW, or, Carrier Wave, works similarly to the way sidebands work, although in
the case of CW there is a modulated carrier wave, whereas with SSB (Single
Sideband),there is no carrier wave at all. CW and CW reverse differ only
slightly. But it’s useful to have both modes available. Usually, when somebody
with eyes uses a radio in CW mode these days, they have access to wave form
imagers. Thus it is a simple matter to tune for what’s known as “Zero Beat”.
That is to say, the receiver and transmitter are tuned to precisely the same
frequency. If you monitor a CW signal, you will find that the tone of the
signal can be, to put it in layman’s terms, pitch-tuned. That is where Zero
Beat comes in. Usually, if the receiver is tuned to the precise transmitted
signal’s frequency, a morse key would cause the transmitter to emit tones at
precisely the same frequency as the remote station.

In the case of CW Reverse, when you modify your frequency by increasing it, the
reverse occurs. So, instead of decreasing in pitch when you tune up, the pitch
of the tone you hear or see goes down, and visa versa. It is very uncommon to
find a receiver these days which makes use of this kind of reception tuning.
Where it comes into its own is when you have two very strong CW signals, both
transmitting at the same time, on almost adjacent frequencies. By switching to
CW Reverse mode, you can modify your centre, or “Spot” frequency so that, in
reality, it differs from that of the remote station you’re tuning too, but it
actually sounds exactly the same as if you were on the same frequency.

Many amateur radio tuners use a system which some call a “Clarifier”, (such as
Yasue). Kenwood, for example, call the function “R.I.T.”, (Receive Incremental
Tuning). So all Icom have done here is taken the function to the next stage. In
effect, therefore, all CW Reverse amounts too is a posh name for a good
old--fashioned R.I.T. system.

That’s a very crude explanation, but it just about sums up what the mode is
used for.

This receiver also decodes many of the now used digital modes of transmission,
amateur and commercial. For example, it can decode D-Star transmissions without
breaking sweat.

I could continue to ecstorl the virtues of this radio for the next several
hours. But I really don’t think I’ll do so. Right at the moment, if you don’t
mind. It’s late, I’m tired and have a busy day ahead tomorrow. ;-)

Actually, last night I dispensed with my media centre in my bedroom and used
this radio instead to listen to Smooth Radio on FM. I found the audio
reproduction perfectly adequate for those times when one is drifting off to
sleep, and not really fussy about audio sound quality.

It may even be that you are drifting off to sleep just reading or listening to
this message. I certainly know how to waffle, don’t I! :-)

I first heard about the Icom IC-r30 in October last year when a friend of mine

I was anxious to find out more so I asked about and it didn’t take me long to
discover that the Icom IC-R30 was already very well regarded and a star in its
own right when it comes to handheld receivers which I had little regard for
until this time.
It seemed therefore fitting that I should make an attempt to get to know a
radio such as this so I bought one for my Birthday.
I echo many of the points by Gordon and I also agree that the IC-R30 is not a
radio I will fully master overnight.
The equipment is feature rich without a doubt, like a car whose every nook and
cranny is in occupation.
Some of the functions I think worth notting concern the wide variety of control
the user has over the radio.
The IC-R630 has a 3.5MM jack above the USB socket on the right-hand side.
By default this jack will accept a standard pair of stereo headphones but
that’s just the beginning.
The socket can be programmed to do several different thinks: act as an external
speaker or line-out connection, as an external antenna connection etc.
Those who read Gordon’s review will know that this radio is able to receive the
standard AM Broadcast Band, not a necessary quality perhaps in a receiver of
this calibre but convenient all the same.
So what if I told you that Icom had actually gone a step further by including a
lipstick aerial for the AM Broadcast Band inside the radio? How Icom managed to
get anything extra into such a small body is beyond me but they managed and

With the Mac you can find the up/down buttons, turn cursor tracking

down the band in the appropriate steps depending on where you are in
the spectrum.
You also have other options you can click on in the same way say using
+/-100KH~ or +/-1KHZ steps.
If you’re using a Windows sScreen reader then you have to make sure
that the Focus doesn’t move back to the frequency entry box and how
you do that depends on which Screen reader you’re using.
If you use JAWS then you can simulate a mouse click in JAWS Cursor

As for a phone not having a FM radio being a critical point? I’m not

FM radio sets are so good and cheap these days so why not just go out

anyone preparing an emergency kit whilst travelling - would have some

World Band radio which can be held in the hand.
I can assure you that carrying one of these would be well worth it
given the FM radios in phones - given my experience - just don’t
perform too well, yep for local stuff there okay but - if disaster

Anyway its an interesting discussion and the whole idea of FM radios
in phones hasn’t been abandoned, take the Nokia 3310 and the other
Nokia Android phones which are around now, I believe they all have FM
radio facilities.
Further to this - if you believe it absolutely critical that your
iPhone have a FM radio - then a dock connector can be purchased to
carry out this task.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: More On ElBraille

2017-08-07 Thread The wolf

can you tell me how much this unit cost?

On 8/6/2017 11:31 PM, Gordon Smith wrote:

Hello everybody

OK, this came as a pleasant surprise on Friday. I’ve been loaned an
ElBraille to play with by a local school’s V.I department who want me
to conduct training after the summer recess with some of their 11 to
18-year-old students, to teach them how to use the platform.

As I say, I received this on Friday and my initial impressions are
that I have made a great choice when opting to buy one of these things
at the time of Sight Village in the UK when the price was reduced by
£220.00 as a promotion by the UK dealership of Freedom Scientific.

Anyway, to the point. I am finding that the JAWS command set is really
very easy to memorise. Navigation using Braille commands isn’t
something I’ve done much of until now under Windows. But I can’t
believe how easily I’ve taken to it, and although I’ve only had the
thing for 72 hours or so, it’s already seeming like such a natural and
easy way to work.

Regarding the device itself, it’s just over 7-and-a-half inches long
by 4 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep. The Focus 14 Blue fits snugly
into the front of the device and, when it’s in its Eco-leather carry
case, the device and Focus just looks like one solid unit. There’s
absolutely nothing clunky about it at all.

The SD card and Micro-SIM cards are easy to access, as are the host
USB 3.0 port, mini HDMI slot, 3.5MM headphones/line out and Mic/Line
in sockets.

Somewhat disappointingly, although definitely not a show-stopper, is
that the mini HDMI interface does not appear to carry audio, although
I will check that just to be sure. That would have been quite nice. I
own a monitor with internal speakers which would have been terrific as
a second sound device. But as I say, it’ isn't the end of the world if
not.

The stereo speakers on the front of the device have a very nice sound
to them, given the size of the device – much better than I was
expecting. The systemic sounds and the vibration motor employ a
totally separate system speaker, so that nothing interferes with audio
playback. Speech is easy to disable and enable with just one keystroke.

The boot sounds, beeps and vibrations can be configured via the
ElBraille main menu. Which is great for me personally. I often find
myself working in environments where beeps and buzzes would be
intrusive. So having the option to disable those is a plus.

The device takes about 20 seconds or so to boot from cold back into
the Windows interface, and there is constant Braille and audio
feedback throughout. In fact, the whole system is totally accessible.
It comes supplied with an SD card backup of the base level system so
that, should you find yourself really stuck and have to reinstall from
the ground up, then you have a totally accessible means of doing so.

The ElBraille Emergency menu is reassuringly easy to access, and it’s
self-Brailled and self-voiced. You do need to be careful if JAWS is
running when you access that menu, as you’ll get double speech in that
event.

Regarding network support, the device has full support for
802.11/a/b/g/N/AC protocols, with dual band 4.2 and 5.0GHz support.

The Windows interface is in no way hacked or cut down. It’s just like
a full-blown system. When I get mine, I plan to upgrade the OS by
changing the product key, assuming that is possible, to give me access
to all features of Windows 10 Professional. That said, I’m not sure
that is actually necessary any longer, but I’m already enquiring about
that.

Battery life is truly, truly excellent! I have the device connected
directly to a Bluetooth® speaker, and also to WiFi. The manufacturer’s
claims of 17 to 20 hours battery life, even under these conditions,
are in no way exaggerated. Although I would obviously expect just a
little less when connecting a USB 3.0 hard drive and high speed high
capacity SanDisc SD media. But assuming that reduces life to
approximately 15 hours, I could quite happily live with that as it’s
way in excess of a normal working day.

One very small gripe is that the divide is not chargeable via USB.
That said, there’s no need for a USB client port, so I guess that
functionality would be superfluous.

Office support has been extremely well designed. The ElBraille menu
incorporates options for all Office 2016 (Office 365), 2013 and 2010
applications. So it’s really a breeze to run your production tools and
to access reading materials.

There is direct support for audio listening modes, and there’s no
reason whatsoever why one cannot install recording software such as
the very excellent Sound Forge Professional. JAWS and NVDA have very
good support for that software anyway, although I would imagine that
for really advanced editing such as multitrack projects, dedicated
JAWS scripting would be required.

I have been asked whether NVDA runs on this device. My response at
this time is, I don’t

Re: [Techno-Chat]: KNFB Reader

2017-03-09 Thread The Wolf

how would you scan text?

would you hold the item in front of the camera on the windows10 version?

Hi!

I was very excited to hear about the launch of the KNFB Reader App for
Windows so KNFB Reader is now nearly a truly cross-platform OCR system
given the App is available for IOS, Android and now Windows 10.

I was able to contact one of the people responsible for the KNFB
Reader and I asked about a possible version for Mac OS?

Unfortunately there are no plans for such a thing which is rather odd
given that most Mac machines available today have built-in cameras
which would make them very useable with such an App as KNFB Reader.

However the people who develop this App know their market so they
obviously know what would be used and what wouldn't be.

I love the App and now use it on both my IOS and Android devices, I'll
soon be using KNFB Reader on my Windows 10 Desktop, no matter what
device you have so long as it runs Windows 10 then KNFB Reader should
work.

I guess the point here is that Pandora are concentrating on quantity
over quality.

I too gladly subscribe to Radiotunes, not just for the quality of
streams but the excellent variety of material available.

The disdavantage of Radiotunes here is that I cannot specifically tell
Radiotunes what I want to hear, I have a few hundred music channels to
select from and that's that, more than enough music.

I am also a subscriber to Spotify and they opffer me - not only high
quality audio streams - but the ability to hear my audio offline.

The more options out there for music subscription and streaming then
the better I'll be pleased, I like Pandora and Spotify though I've
