Absolutely right and this comes to play with the Google Chromecast Audio which
has a digital line out as well as an Analogue connection so you can receive
very reasonable sound out of that incredibly small device.

Recipes aren’t something I use my devices for, to be honest. But yes, as an
experiment, I tried the Code In The Hole request as it’s one of my favourite
meals. The good old Yorkshire pudding is most definitely one of England’s
finest contributions to modern civilisation as a whole. ;-)

There is, in fact, much to recommend the Google Home. Whether you go for the
full size Home device, or for the Mini. Or, for that matter, the Google Home
Max. I’m actually toying with that idea as an alternative to the Echo Show. One
thing I must say about Google is that they know what their core industry is,
and they concentrate on the things that they do best. The fact that they saw a
neish in the market for audio equipment supporting Google’s core functionality
as well as decent audio is not, I think, a coincidence.

That said, to be utterly fair, there is much to recommend the Amazon Echo
devices for as well. Indeed, my great nephew uses the Echo Dot which I bought
him for Christmas last year to great effect in terms of his education. One of
the most valued functions, for him at least, is as a spell-checker. If he’s
unsure how to spell a word, he simply asks Alexa. She then just spells the word
for him.

I agree with you regarding the audio from the Google Mini which isn't
bad at all and certainly not what I'd call average, I was quite
surprised to hear the audio from the Google Home, if you're lookin for
very average audio out of a device then the Echo Dot certainly gives you
that.

Unfortunately Google Home cannot play Audio books as Amazon Echo can at
this time according to my research but it is a project in progress.

On a different though related topic, I also now own 3 different types

Plus devices is the colour. In every other respect, they appear
identical. The audio hasn’t changed at all between the two. The only
difference between the Echo and the Echo+ is that the Echo+ contains
an in-built smart hub, allowing you to use a wider range of smart
devices. That aside, they are absolutely identical. I’m still toying
with the idea of buying an Echo Show, although I’ll have to give that
a lot more thought first. The Show is a far higher grade speaker
system, and also has video screen (7.1-Inch), touch sensitive, and a

We will have to see on that one, the jury is still out.

I have two of the Home devices, one the full-size model, one the Mini. It’s
very interesting, the fact that the country code in my original full-size model
is US, and in my Mini it’s UK. I must try to find out how that can be changed,
if it’s even possible. I can’t update its firmware much, because it’s in the
wrong country. The Mini, on the other hand, has received a number of updates
since I installed it. I’m a member of the Google Home Developer’s test group.
So I’ve had a number of pre-release builds. Anyway, I’m off now, while it’s in

this. Those who have commented that the audio from the Home Mini’s speaker is
only “Average”, I don’t agree at all with that statement. Obviously, it isn’t
in the same class as the full-size Home speaker system is. But then again, that
is totally different type of device. The speaker in the Home is an all-round
(360º) speaker system, and it’s quite room-filling.

But the Mini, given the very solid build of the device and the physical size of
the thing, is at least as good as, and possibly better than, the Amazon Echo
Dot second generation.

I have my full-size device in the lounge, and my Mini upstairs. I wish it were
possible to play Audible books on that device. But if it is, I can’t figure out
how.

On a different though related topic, I also now own 3 different types of Amazon
Echo. First, I have the second generation Echo. As I’ve said, I own a second
generation Echo Dot. I also now own a first generation Echo Plus, which was
released last month. The only difference from the external perspective between
my own Echo and Echo Plus devices is the colour. In every other respect, they
appear identical. The audio hasn’t changed at all between the two. The only

Re: [Techno-Chat]: Google Home Mini Is Here!

2017-10-26 Thread Gordon Smith
The quality of the audio from the Mini by far exceeds that of the Echo Dot, and
the device is a little smaller.

I have to say I’m very impressed with it. Another thing I like is that the
Google Home’s microphone toggle is a switch, rather than a button. Ergo, one
can feel the status of the switch at just a touch, thus avoiding accidentally
forgetting to switch the microphone back on and wondering why it won’t respond.

Would be quite nice with the addition of a a battery, and a line out would have
been helpful at times. But not the end of the worlds, since one can Bluetooth®
connect to a speaker if desired.

I'm looking forward to seeing - or perhaps that should be hearing - the Google

Re: [Techno-Chat]: Google Home Mini Is Here!

2017-10-18 Thread Dane Trethowan

Thanks for that.

Its my Birthday soon and I was in two minds.

I know I need another Google Home but I'm not sure yet as to whether
I'll go for the standard Google Home device or the Mini, whatever way I
doubt I'll be disappointed.

I'm looking forward to seeing - or perhaps that should be hearing - the
Google Home Max which should be selling in around 6 weeks from now.

Anyway, I received it about half an hour ago.

The Google Home Mini is most certainly a miniture device. Although it has a
standard USB Micro port for the power supply, like its big brother, it will
only function with its own power supply. I think the voltages are lower than
normal, about 2.5 volts at 400 MAH.

Anyway, the device itself. Like its big brother, it is a fabric covered
sleaker, and only has one control. The sliding toggle switch that turns on and
off the microphone.

It does, however support gestures. For instance, rolbing your finger around the
edge of the speaker surface turns the volume up, (clockwise movement) and down,
(anti-clockwise movement).

The device is configured from the Home app on your phone or tablet, in
precisely the same way that the bigger version is configured. It fits snugly in
the palm of the hand, and although I'm still aweaiting the completion of a
firmware download, and so haven't got it set up properly as yet, I'm really
enthusiastic about the device. The Google Assistant audio is just as clean and
clear as the big brother version, and I was struck by how rich and fulb it
sounds. Even with this small device, I can clearly here a nice top and bottom
end to the audio.

So, off I go to set this up. Also, just by the by, stand by for a very indepth
review done by me of the latest Sky Q TV system. I had a special experience
with sky themselves, as you'll find out soon.

OKAY, off I jolly well pop!

Possibly, yes, but I’m not seeing it on the current ad page.

I got my Google Home too early! Guess I couldn’t wait! Thus, I got it from a
company in Chicago who shipped it to me. Problem, it’s country code is US and
it’s getting quite confused about firmware updates. Seems that I should have
big my tongue and waited the extra few months.
